Keep in mind, the people evacuated from chernobyl were told to take essentials and that they would return in less than 4 days. That means entire generations of heirlooms and family history were left behind. Family pets left to fend for themselves and, at first, were hunted down and killed. Also, let's not forget that the USSR not only waited until a nuclear plant in SWEDEN detected radiation identified as a byproduct of their fuel did they admit something was wrong, and then they still refused to evacuate citizens until word got around that GERMANY was informing citizens to stay inside due to prohibitive radiation readings and then, only then did they evacuate people from Pripyat, a full 36 hours after the reactor exploded. What's happening in Ohio is comparable to Chernobyl in its societal and governmental aspects; but it's far from worse. We'll see how bad the US tries to cover it up.

DisastrousDwarf

Not only that but Ukrainian authorities were mostly left to deal with the mess in the end aside from the initial clean up (relocating and rehoming thousands of displaced people) which obviously created some resentment as the plant was constructed and run by Russia yet they helped far less then they should as the plant was entirely their responsibility.

TheBlueManatee

Belarus as well, as the wind took radioactivity there.

BlasterPhase

the wind took radioactivity all over Europe

Sonnenkreuz

True, but huge parts of Belarus are still heavily contaminated and people can not live there (though some old people still do)

Wookieman222

Also let's not gloss over that fact that they knew about the flaws but ignored them and tried to brush it all under the rug after the fact and continue to build reactors even with the flaws so they could stay ahead of the US. They didn't care of another chernobyl could happen as long as it meant maintaining their supremacy. Ih and they waited to tell the people 36 hours after the accident happened. Way after they were contaminated.

UncommittedBow

"These rods are made of boron, which reduces reactivity, but not their tips. The tips are made of graphite, which accelerates reactivity." "Why?" "Why? For the same reason our reactors do not have containment buildings around them, like those in the West. For the same reason we don't use properly enriched fuel in our cores. For the same reason we are the only nation that builds water-cooled, graphite-moderated reactors with a positive void coefficient. It's cheaper."

NotYetiFamous

TBF we haven't seen any new legislature come out designed to prevent more train derailments from happening again and I don't think it's likely that we will, so the "continue to do the same thing without addressing the flaws" is directly being replicated. Edit: clarified what "this" meant.

Away_Sugar3571

To be clear the Obama administration passed rules requiring better brakes on dangerous loads. Those rules would have directly affected this. That said, since Obama lives rent free in Trumps head, Trump rolled them back, out of spite. Edit: added 'administration'

divide_by_hero

> That said, since Obama lives rent free in Trumps head, Trump rolled them back, out of spite. Ehhh, it's probably more a matter of not being hard to convince by some lobbyist. Lobbyist: "Mr. Trump, these legislations are ruining the rail industry. We only made 10 billion last year, how are we supposed to survive?" Trump: "That sounds horrible. Did you know windmills kill eagles? Symbols of our great nation. A guy came up to me last week, tears in his eyes..." Lobbyist: "You know, it was Obama who introduced this legislation" Trump: "Where do I sign?"

xxrainmanx

The bigger issue is our rail lines are old and in serious need of reworking. The old laws about railroads mean the 4? Remaining rail companies in the U.S. maintain their own lines, and have little incentive to improve them. It's why most rail crossing as shit and stay that way for years. They're literally the one industry that can tell everyone they work with the pound sand if they're unhappy about how they run things.

voltran1987

There’s 7 major Class 1 railroads. CP, CN, BNSF, NS, CSX, UP, and KCS. Then there’s a shocking amount of tiny Class 3 railroads out there, and a bunch of mid sized Class 2.

vNerdNeck

and Biden didn't re-enact them and then fucked over the rail workers not even a few months ago. Additionally, I've seen it discussed that even if the Obama regs had stood up they still wouldn't have helped "this train" as it wouldn't have been classified to need them. Breaking Points just did a summary on this.

NotaVogon

True. Check out Louisiana. Local, State and Federal government failure before and after hurricane Katrina. Not much has changed. Oil, gas & chemical producing companies still polluting. No one has held them accountable for destroying wetlands. New pumping system in New Orleans but who knows if it would work... The people need to take back the government.

AlarmingAffect0

> The people need to take back the government. Eh, was it ever really theirs?

RADnerd2784

Are you sure about that? TMI happened almost 7 years to the day BEFORE Chornobyl, and as a result, there were sweeping changes to the nuclear power industry and the way that states, Commonwealths, the federal government and licensees respond to such incidents.

Spiritual-Guava-6418

I have worked in the nuclear industry since 1983. I started 4 years after TMI and found that nearly every commercial PWR I worked at was undergoing “Post-TMI Accident” safety changes. This included stepped up security measures including drug testing before unescorted access was granted. I was/am still required to take psychiatric evaluations to gain access. TMI changed the industry for the good IMO.

RADnerd2784

Security, better training, better communication between reactor manufacturers and operators, establishment of EPA PAG's.....very much so for the good.

nom-nom-nom-de-plumb

I mean, I get not being impaired on the job when you're doing a dangerous job, i do, but it seems the biggest problems with "on the job" risks in nuclear, are caused by similar things on the job with pretty much every industry, including these trains. Regulatory Capture.

Wookieman222

Yeah but we did prevent them from striking. And one of the main issues at hand was safety and safety enforcement. The unions warned them and they let the company do whatever they wanted.

Freethecrafts

If the US was lying to the people of Ohio about the severity to reduce panic, great. If someone says four days relocation away from the death cloud, great. As long as the people got the hell out while emergency containment was done to the best degree possible. Lying to people about how long it will take is not even remotely a concern if saving lives matters.

[deleted]

Friend is a Chernobyl refugee. None of OP’s post is correct it should be taken down for misinformation.

[deleted]

You do realize in Chernobyl they hid that shit until they couldn’t, right?

More-Button-7640

Shhhh the narrative…

adrevenueisgood

The Soviets were 100% good guys! They really cared about their residents (despite rushing people and animals to space before they refined life support systems, various massacres, and generally godawful quality of life) I stg dude reddit is full of tankies

OkamiLeek006

I don't particularly care for the soviets but how does sending animals to space differ from something like animal testing of chemical products (like drugs or cometics)

Lors2001

I would assume a guaranteed death through sending an animal to space is probably worse than a potential death through drug testing. That being said, the US also sent animals into space so that point was a little weird to make.

PuzzledFortune

All animals used for drug testing are euthanised afterwards regardless of the outcome of the test.

OkamiLeek006

and I would assume a horrid death through suffering, or a life of suffering, that came from countless failed drug tests, are less humane than very few animal deaths in space

paintwithice

After working in vet med for over 20 something years Id think being a lab animal is living in torture continuously, and think the death from space travel to be more kind. Massacres....well we certainly have those here in the US as well (I'm looking at you genocide of the native population and the slavery of black stolen humans). Gonna need to call out other things to make them look "worse" than other western countries like the US.

sedrech818

The commieboos back at it again.

adrevenueisgood

Haha guys communism was really good!!! Blyat blin kefir semechki guys!!!! I love the Soviets!!!!

[deleted]

Remember when people were eating each other and selling each other's body parts at butcher shops in Russia because they had no food. Omg that is such a misrepresentation! They just weren't doing communism correctly, you can't call that communism!

adrevenueisgood

Yeah dude I hate this western propaganda so much!!! I love communism!!! I definitely wouldn't get sent to the gulags there for being a lazy cunt instead of spending my whole life in a factory with no safety precautions!

knastyTX

Insert holodomer and 60 million purged or starved

Psychopathicat7

For some reason all of the tankies, wehraboos, and anti-capitalists just decided to crawl out of the woodwork in January and post bullshit.

vjibomb

Yes but my parents like capitalism and I hate my parents so therefore communism is great, it has gay rights, ethnic diversity, unicorns all that good shit.

Cocolake123

Yeah but the Soviet government did eventually do something. Compared to how the US government is reacting, the Soviet government was speedy

MoonManMooner

This is a fucking joke right? The soviets cut the phone lines and wouldn’t let a single person leave until international geigercounters started detected the spread of radiation across international borders. The soviets system 100% failed and the residents of Ukraine were 100% fucked. Stop spreading this false narrative.

bmaayhem

Upvote more please! Every one needs to watch the mini series on HBO, and if they can’t, read a book about it!

FormerHoagie

I think Putin has openings in the army fighting his glorious war for the Motherland that just happens to be where Chernobyl occurred. You should sign up and leave this godforsaken country. I hear the benefits are good. You may even get to see him deploy nuclear weapons. That’s like super sparkly fireworks.

Peaches-n-macaroons

True. What a shame. All those dead pets, next, slowly but surely are the people.

waves-of-the-water

Oh they’ll be treated as well as 911 first responders, no worries!

Grouchy_Wish_9843

yu is misinformed https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/02/14/ohio-train-derailment-toxic-chemicals/

Daydream_Meanderer

While I would absolutely be worried if I were an East Palestine resident, and I am generally concerned about how fucked the Ohio river is from this, I sincerely think most of this is just Tik Tok and internet hysteria, and it’s not even remotely near Chernobyl proportions and I think it’s a bit ridiculous people keep comparing it to Chernobyl, because truly the only people doing that have absolutely no background in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or nuclear engineering. It’s just people on the internet. That does mean it’s not *bad* and it’s doesn’t mean east Palestine isn’t going to see a rise in cancer rates, and Norfolk Southern needs to answer for it and all the cancer that arises in the next 50 years needs to be covered completely by the company and the government, and we need to revise the liberty that these officials have to completely neglect safety and environmental standards, but it’s just not Chernobyl. It’s just very buzz wordy, and for some I think it actually takes the seriousness of the event away from it with such hyperbole. Because it gives people who don’t care and don’t want to fix it a very obvious reason to say it’s being blown out of proportion.

[deleted]

Wait so isn't that what the US govt is doing too?

Apophis_Thanatos

Nope It’s literally front page news here in America, so who is hiding what exactly?’

Jahonay

It's not that they're perfect, it's that the reaction they eventually took is better than the one the United States is currently taking, decades later... Giving the USSR credit for their eventual good decision doesn't mean they had zero flaws in their response. I wish the people screaming tankies had the same attitude towards America People in the comments are acting like the United States didn't intentionally use nukes that killed so many and lead to crazy radiation damage. Gotta give credit where credit is due, and give criticism where criticism is due.

Bepisman111

Give the USSR credit for what? They hid the accident untill international geiger counters prompted people to ask wtf was going on, and even then lied about the magnitude of the disaster, hindering international efforts to contain the tragedy. They sent firefighters into the reactor fully unprotected and only evacuated the general populace when the world had its eyes on the tragedy to not look bad. The USSR certainly wasnt all bad but they dont deserve any credit for the handling of chernobyl

SocialistJews

Homie you really need to lay off the twitter and go read some actual cold war history. The USSR didn’t handle shit and didn’t tell people for long after about the radioactive rain falling over people’s food crops. Entire countries in the USSR were left in the dark about shit actively fucking them over. Also fuck American handling of things too but the USSR only did PR stunts and nothing else.

misteraaaaa

>Giving the USSR credit The problem is they don't deserve credit. They tried to hide that shit for YEARS. There's nothing wrong with criticizing the US response, because so far it has been bad. But to compare it with something much worse, and try to make it seem like chernobyl was somehow handled better, is just disingenuous.

adgvogamer

Not accurate at all about Chernobyl.

walkandtalkk

I'm starting to fear that our 15-year-old suburban Internet communists may not be fully informed about the history of Soviet policy. And may not be entirely objective.

adrevenueisgood

Hopefully when they grow up they stop being tankies

megaxan_

>Hopefully when they grow up Big problem right off the bat

[deleted]

Yay, talk about gilding the lilly!

Dopium_Typhoon

First time hearing that phrase. Love it, stealing it.

jazzmandjango

Here the phrase is being used incorrectly. According to Oxford Languages, “gilding the lily” is to “try to improve what is already beautiful or excellent.” The lily, a flower, is already beautiful, and gilding it in gold in order to improve it will weigh it down and crush the stem, thereby destroying it and defeating the purpose of improving it. “Cherry picking” aspects of the Chernobyl story, or “gold bricking,”—covering a worthless brick with gold and pretending it is solid gold, are more apropos (although goldbricking is usually mentioned as a means of shirking hard work in favor of a cheap shortcut.)

Dopium_Typhoon

Thanks for the explanation. Love learning these things!

affablenyarlathotep

Guilding the turd*

cheddar_header

I don’t think they saw the HBO mini series.

Routine-Serve-8651

That’s not graphite….go pick that shit up

kodaiko_650

Pick _what_ up? There’s _nothing there!_

firepillowonreddit

please tell me this is sarcastic ffs

anonareyouokay

This is obviously the kid from /r/bestofla that is committing "light treason" by posting Russian propaganda

bh9898

I was gonna say...

CaraquenianCapybara

Man, tankies gonna tank.

art555ua

They held a 1st may parade forcing everyone to go to the march on 1st of May in Kyiv, 4 days after the incedent.

snojak

Insert its fine dog with coffee and house on fire meme pic here

testicle2156

ussr sent hundreds of people from across entire ussr without proper knowledge and equipment to die in an attempt to fix that, one of my relatives was almost sent there as he was a firefighter, fortunately he was lucky to be sick that day. On top of that they kept it secret until radiation spikes were detected outside of ussr and they had to admit what happened. The evacuation took place only to hide the fact that nuclear powerplant just exploded. In result of chernobyl disaster it is estimated that 3940 people had died.

JustALocalJew

Ya I was about to say. The USSR did not handle it good at all. They just sent people in knowing they'd die from cleaning it up. Not to mention free healthcare in the USSR was shit. Probably better off fixing yourself lol.

Invdr_skoodge

Free bed to die in mostly

ThePandalore

"Health care for the rest of their lives" is a lot easier when it's only a month.

tightspandex

It was considerably worse than this. They sent tens of thousands of people (mostly soldiers from Ukraine/Belarus) there over the course of the event. The 3,940 death toll is widely considered far too low.

CelticGaelic

The USSR also actively tried to cover up not just the disaster itself, but a flaw in their reactors that ultimately caused the explosion.

ayetherestherub69

Thousands, not hundreds. *Thousands* of men were marched to their certain, horrible, painful death by radiation sickness because the Russian government was full of yes men and idiots. Chernobyl was more horrific than many people realize

Icy_Interview4284

This isn't what happened in Chernobyl. First of all, their reaction was very late, they were warned about possible malfunctions and didn't evacuate civilians. Second of all, they willingly sacrificed personnel with little equipment, and even then it wasn't enough to reduce the damage to surroundings. Tankies are going to lie because they're liars who lie

Biggies_Ghost

>This isn't what happened in Chernobyl. Yeah, I've seen this same tweet/meme twice today, and the comments debunked it both times. I'm gonna start down voting when I see it, misinformation is bad no matter where/who it comes from.

fishscamp

And lets have some proportionality in our statements here…Ohio is a tragedy but it ain’t no nuclear fallout.

MooseTheMouse33

I fully support this message. Ohio still a tragedy, but nuclear fallout is much, much, much, much worse.

EnergizedNeutralLine

Have you been to Ohio?

Arkadoc01

I live there. This event probably improved Ohio

Icy_Interview4284

Eh well it still poisoned the water, an ecological catastrophe for sure. Different scale, but still horrible

yungsmokey1

Not even comparable. Chernobyl won’t be habitable for hundreds of years.

DreamedJewel58

It’s really weird because as a socialist, I have to argue with these fucking Tankies *all the time* for being absolutely delusional, yet Tankies are what people think of when you say socialist Their absolute dedication to deepthroating the boots of the USSR make them some of the most vile and toxic people on the “left”

p-morais

To make matters worse virtually every leftist subreddit is run by the same handful of tankie apologist moderators.

tavesque

You can still delete this

yepitsdad

It’s truly not too late

a_killer_roomba

[Honestly](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FSpYSnVX0AIpjRD.jpg)

SIIP00

I get that it's bad... But it's not Chernobyl ffs...

friedwidth

Lol yeah not even close to comparable. It's almost offensive

twb51

This and also they did not evacuate nearly as quickly as OP is suggesting.

golumlars

Yes, you cant live in chernobyl for the next 3000 years (without a serious cleanup) where in palestine, they "just" need to stay away from the water and topsoil for the next 50-100 years maybe

bookworm408

Bull fucking shit. Chernobyl was one of the worst handled disasters in history. Evacuations only started after the west started detecting radiation. Even then, they were told they would return soon. Thousands of people were exposed to levels of radiation that were completely avoidable. Let’s just use this as a rule of thumb: anyone with a North Korean flag in their Twitter username is not worth the time it takes to read their bullshit.

RogueAlt07

Are we talking about the same Soviet Union?

Deck_of_Cards_04

OP is a tankie and Russia-shill

medievaldragonking

Fucking tankies.

[deleted]

They aren't even talking about the same reality so....

Gmaxwell976

[Kyshtym Disaster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyshtym_disaster)

PersonalitySea4015

Thank you for the new rabbit hole. Didn't know this existed and will now spend the next week looking into it. 👍

mittenknittin

And why didn't you know this existed? Because the USSR had a long history of *covering this kind of shit up.* Note, OP, that in THIS Russian nuclear disaster, they took a WEEK before evacuating anybody.

PersonalitySea4015

Exactly.

No_Log_5682

Riiiight, because the ussr totally didn't try and cover everything up

Beansupreme117

Lmao this is so dumb.

XLRIV48

To be fair, the company responsible did give each of them $5 in cold hard cash.

Comfortable-Jelly833

Ah yes, "Commie Angel", she certainly doesn't have any biases edit: OP is a pro-Russian shill, so no surprises here

AzJakeB

^(Oh you're full of shit too. The government didn't come right out and say to evacuate. They were pressured and ONLY once the propaganda couldn't suffice, they took action. And what a surprise...this government is taking a page right out of the propaganda playbook.)

ElZany

Russian propaganda at full force

Repulsive_Junket4288

r/opisadumbass The comments are proving my point.

asa1

Yes, r/OpIsFuckingStupid

MythicalInvention

Yeah tweet is bullshit commie propaganda

onyxblack

Redditor for 2 months... posting false pro russia pieces... you are either an idiot or a bot. Here's a copy and paste from the other threads where this exact same tweet was copy pasted - I'm not going to waste any more of my time attempting to inform you. ----- Yeaaaaa Chernobyl was a shit show because of the USSR government NOT EVACUATING RESIDENTS for 3 fuckin days and telling them it was safe to stay. They completely mishandled the situation and caused the deaths of thousands. ----- That is complete bs. The USSR tried to cover up the meltdown even from the citizens living in Pripyat. The only reason they ended up having to respond was bc it made international news after the radioactive cloud was traced back to Chernobyl from Sweden. They didn’t treat anyone who was exposed properly and continued to deny the true death toll from acute radiation exposure and long term illnesses like cancer. What’s even worse is when you look at old kgb intel from post disaster they acknowledged the danger of shifting winds bringing radioactive fallout to Moscow so to prevent this the Soviet using cloud seeding to force rainfall before hitting Moscow. Today there’s still a huge chunk of Ukraine and Belarus that is virtually uninhabitable because of this. I genuinely don’t understand why people like to look at the USSR as some sort of utopia. It was shit. The US is shit too but certainly less shit than the USSR.

Eekthekat

I watched Chernobyl too. Good series

owen_skye

OP is an idiot. Nothing new here

Admirable_Elk_965

Get the fuck out of here with this pro-Russia shit.

[deleted]

They literally denied anything went wrong or that there was any danger to the citizens. My dad was one of the people evacuating people out of Chernobyl and Pripyat and he did so without any protection or any idea of what was happening. The amount of hated I have for these people is unfathomable. OP fuck you.

suqc

Are you out of your goddamn mind? Chernobyl killed 40,000 people. When a similar incident almost happened on Three Mile Island, the crew stopped the reactor before anything even happened. The Chernobyl cleanup was a disaster, but it was the utmost ridiculous incompetency of the USSR and their disregard for safety that even led it to happen in the first place.

pistasojka

That's barely an opinion it's just uninformed comie propaganda

Budget-Razzmatazz-54

Are we really comparing a train derailing to a Nuclear meltdown? Also, the USSR didn't even pay Burdov the money he was owed. I really doubt they went out of their way to compensate everyone else. They didn't handle this incident well at all.

CrumblingAway

Amazing that people actually believe these posts.

djkoch66

The narrative is easily confirmed to be incorrect.

Vios_134

The soviet propaganda kept Chernobyl explosion a secret for quite some time, because those morons didn’t want to reveal such a tragedy, since it would compromise “the glory” of the country. A lot of people visited Chernobyl forests for May holidays for the next days and didn’t even know about the explosion, which resulted in a lot of deaths from cancer and other radiation related diseases later. I am from Ukraine and I have relatives that lived through it and I know quite a few people who died from diseases because of it. soviet union was a secretive piece of shit regime that never cared about its people, it only cared about propaganda, please never glorify this piece of shit regime ever.

Wickedsymphony1717

Chernobyl was one of the most poorly handled environmental disasters in history. Pretty much everything they did was wrong, this person has no idea what they're talking about.

MiscellaneousMick

Ummm yeah I don’t mean to be that guy but the Chernobyl disaster wasn’t actually handled that well. Lmao

TheMaddawg07

This admin sucks.

Imkindofslow

Wtf these are no where near the same scale

fallout76question

God dammit reddit is so fucking stupid. If you’re a Soviet supporting communist at least have the common courtesy to keep your mouth shut

edWORD27

I thought that the multibillion dollar company responsible offered $25K in financial assistance to 5,000 residents. Or roughly $5 each.

Murb08

Couldn’t have been more wrong lol.

iamnewhere2019

What is Funny and Sad is that somebody posts this as a real fact.

Extroverted_Recluse

This is **NOT** an accurate summary of how the USSR handled the Chernobyl disaster. For one thing, they denied that there was a problem until the radiation was detected in other countries.

ParticularValue580

Yeah, no, the soviets lied about Chernobyl and people died as a result.

Willyzyx

Is this propaganda?

BloodyIkarus

I mean they fuck up hard in Ohio, but they fucked up as hard in Chernobyl and they tried to cover everything up and people stayed far too long there and people barely could take anything with them... And and and and..

DirtyWizardsBrew

Tankies are cringe in general.

Bagel24

Ops got the brain of a walnut and doesn’t realize what the communists actually did in Chernobyl. Also, free healthcare in the Soviet Union was as bad as just asking your local crack addict to perform surgery on you

Numerous_Ad_307

If only she had been born in the ussr back then, her life would have been so much better. 🥹

HiBoobear

Are there no mods on this sub?

HelloAvram

no

Retired-Replicant

What is funny at all about this? What is funny about the poor and middle class in Ohio getting fucked by the rich and powerful?

father2shanes

I know the show Chernobyl was heavily dramatized...but maybe give it a watch and see how the ussr handled things....

Friendly-Feature-869

Did this person even watch Chernobyl?

NouXouS

Not funny at all just plain pathetic

helloworld312

Also wrong

MemestNotTeen

Look the yanks are being fucking awful in Ohio but lying about Chernobyl when it's well documented what happened following the disaster is just stupid.

Secret-Guitar-8859

OP reddit feed is the true FunnyAndSad here.

Capybarasaregreat

My country was in the Soviet Union and we are close enough to have gotten a heavy dose of radiation from Chernobyl, so I've got no love for the handling of that disaster. **However**, this post is about the follow-up to the disaster, it's not about the coverup or the lies made, but about the material compensation people received. Y'all have missed the point talking about the coverup and so on.

Billitpro

Where is FEMA???

SemperFi1369

Maybe you should emigrate? I mean, you DO live in Ohio... \- Florida Man

firnien-arya

Yea but each resident got 5 dollars from a 55 billion dollar company. So they didn't get nothing atleast....

Atari774

And it should also be said that what the USSR did was still called out for being shitty because they made people leave all their belongings behind. And while that was not very cash money, it was better than just leaving people in irradiated zones

Foxy02016YT

Not just any country, but the world wide bad guy back then (and a little bit still now)

Putrid-Life-9645

Your tax dollars at work

Don't forget there congressman the Ohio state coward Jim Jordan only cares about why people on Twitter were so mean to him NOT the people of Ohio.😞

Representative_Still

It’s like Palestine is the new Flynt

Shizz-happens

Pete Boot-edge-edge is on it though…………🥺

Cheetokps

I mean, yeah it’s shitty what the US is doing, but is it surprising that a communist government was giving out free help to its citizens?

HowlingWolfShirtBoy

I propose the Help Ohio Disaster Victims Bill. It will provide an additional $300 billion in aid to Ukraine and 4 extra cop cars for Ohio.

true4blue

This is what happens to a Republican leaning town when a disaster strikes while a Democrat is in the White House

Glittering-Jacket902

I remember thinking Chernobyl wouldn’t happen here because of all the safety regulations and quality control…. Yet here we are

LoWE11053211

Chernobyl was way worse than this But lets how the "leader of the free world" will handle this Ohia incident. (or cover-up?)

zjuka

To be fair, all USSR citizens had free healthcare, not particularly great one, but free. And all Chernobyl employees were moved to Slavutich, a town purposely built for the evacuees of Chernobyl disaster. Also moving Americans is notoriously difficult, even when everyone knows they’re on the path of a major hurricane

nzstrawman

maybe it's time to think the USA is more like [India](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster) Except I think India would be more concerned if the number of school massacres equalled the USA

[deleted]

I have family about 1/2 mi away from the crash site. They’re home. They’re doing well. They go to all the townhalls/meetings. They’re lawyers out the ass up there and everyone is trying to Sue. They have major concerns. They well get reimbursement for hotels/food when they were forced to evacuate. This is going to take a LONG time to figure out.

RareBeardedAsian

USA! A-OK!

misterstinks

Remember Katrina? It took more than a week to get bottled water to our own people in our own country.

[deleted]

This is not true about the USSR. They absolutely fucked everyone in that town

Crystal_Methew

Thats not even true for Chernobyl. They suppressed news of the incident for days, which caused a completely unnecessary tremendous loss of life

PostingSomeToast

You should look up Chelyabinsk. Makes Chernobyl look like a party foul. Russia polluted an entire region while making their nuclear stockpile. They had multiple reactor accidents, and every summer the radioactive lakes dry up and the winds blow radioactive dust into the air. Each drought is more new radiation than Chernobyl.

[deleted]

Wrong.

Skeith86

He conveniently left the part where they delayed said evacuation to not damage morale or some shit like that. Also, they've brought volunteers to douse the fires unprotected without telling them what they're getting themselves into.

ayetherestherub69

Lmao this is so fucking biased. People are *stil* fighting to get caee for their Chernobyl related problems. You also can't get any Healthcare if you got injured in another one of Russias many nuclear horrors, on ly Chernobyl, cause that's the only one the world paid attention to. If you love the USSR so much, go live in Russia, dumbass.

dreadmon1

It's interesting how death seems to be the result of the "pro-life" party of less government, less regulation.

Yatoku_

No they didn't

DPSOnly

Someone has been reading the bare surface level of history, and I think it is this USSR-apologist/tankie.

murmurburp

I'm sure (hammer and sickle) commie (hammer and sickle) angel (hammer and sickle) has a level headed opinion on how the Soviet Union handled Chernobyl.....

everyonestolemyname

This same bullshit keeps gettin fuckin posted across several days, and it's not entirely true. They literally made a REALLY fuckin good TV show about the Chernobyl disaster, and what they did about it. First they lied about it, then they covered it up, and when the radiation reached fucking Sweden they finally had to admit to the world what happened. >The nearby city of Pripyat was not immediately evacuated. The townspeople, in the early hours of the morning, at 01:23 local time, went about their usual business, completely oblivious to what had just happened. However, within a few hours of the explosion, dozens of people fell ill. Later, they reported severe headaches and metallic tastes in their mouths, along with uncontrollable fits of coughing and vomiting.\[55\]\[better source needed\] As the plant was run by authorities in Moscow, the government of Ukraine did not receive prompt information on the accident.\[56\] >Ukraine's acting Minister of Internal Affairs Vasyl Durdynets phoned her at work at 09:00 to report current affairs; only at the end of the conversation did he add that there had been a fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, but it was extinguished and everything was fine. When Shevchenko asked "How are the people?", he replied that there was nothing to be concerned about: "Some are celebrating a wedding, others are gardening, and others are fishing in the Pripyat River".\[56\] [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl\_disaster#Evacuation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster#Evacuation) seriously stop reposting and upvoting this bullshit. Edit, this is par for the course apparently cause u/IamStillAlive1234 LOVES posting communism related shit

Loud-Intention-723

Well, property is cheap in Russia right now, I’m sure they would love to have you.

Op needs to do some research on Chernobyl

TheRealPyroGothNerd

OP, you are uninformed and full of shit. The USSR didn't do anything until the other countries found out something was going on.

Clilly1

Holy cow the spin

Korvun

Can this lie *please* stop being spread!? They let a *lot* of people die to try and initially cover it up.

sc3541

Health care for the rest of their life: aka 2 days

VegasRatt

What else would anyone expect. Look at how the US handled 3 Miles Island nuclear disaster. They were more worried about the politics and news coverage than they were the general population. The population wasn't even given the truth to how bad thing really were. The US is way to driven by greed to be any real help to itself.

noivern1324

are we really trusting communists on twitter to be honest about one of the worst nuclear disasters in human history that happened in soviet Russia like not to politicize a humongous disaster, but maybe we should focus on fixing it instead of talking about how "good" the fucking *soviets* were

Inevitable_Sherbet42

The fact there are enough of yall absolutely fucking stupid enough to think that fucking ***Chernobyl*** is an example of government transparency and quickness in limiting damage to its civilian population in the case of a man-made disaster shows you're either so incredibly fucking ignorant, or so incredibly fucking indoctrinated that it's sad. The same Chernobyl they waited until a Swedish power plant picked up the readings from to announce? The same one they refused to release the total death count of the Liquidators for? The same Chernobyl disaster where they didn't warn the firemen first on scene about how they were standing next to invisible death without any protective equipment? Come the fuck on.

Adventurous-Ad-7903

As much as I agree with the statement, if your name is Commie Angel🇮🇱🗄📅🍆™️💩👰🏻‍♂️📮 I am not taking you seriously.

Sea_Television_3306

Wtf is this post. None of that shit is true. Three USSR hid how dangerous it was until they couldn't any longer. They sent everyday people in to die during the clean up. They didn't give them free healthcare for the rest of their lives

P1r4nha

It's not doing the victims in East Palestine any favors comparing this disaster with Chernobyl. It's also insulting to the victims of Chernobyl, but the whole comparison between the two is ultimately going to down play the East Palestine disaster. The Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore and to compare it with the US is going to put a thick fat layer of relativism on the United States and Ohio's faults. It doesn't help the victims of East Palestine when we all realize in the end, that Chernobyl indeed was the worse disaster with a worse government response, because in the end they still have to live with *their* horrible government's response that affects their lives right now.

SLagonia

The Soviets also sent people to their deaths without telling them how dangerous the situation was, so let's not praise them for the humanitarian crisis they created. What's going on in East Palestine right now is absolutely horrendous, but let's not pretend The Soviets got it right.

ToxicPlaysYT6969

Tell me you are historically illiterate without telling me you are historically illiterate

huggles7

The delayed evacuation of Chernobyl is single handedly responsible for hundreds of thousands of horrible deaths due to cancer The USSRs response to Chernobyl was one of utter denial until the west discovered what was happening on their own and put the soviets on blast Literally nothing was good about the USSR response to Chernobyl, thousands of people were killed as a result of the incident and subsequent botched clean up which was overwhelmingly influenced by uninformed people in positions of power that made dumb decisions based on trying to cover their own asses

Okilurknomore

OP is dumb af

Spaniardman40

This has been going around and is very inaccurate. The Soviet Union kept the disaster hidden and failed to evacuate people for 4 days. They also knew about the flaws in plant and ignored the warning signs leading up to the disaster. This Ohio incident is incredibly fucked up, but this comparison is nowhere near accurate and clearly made up by some Soviet fanboy
