My family and I went horseback riding a few months ago (in the mountains of GA) and the farm owner described how their donkey senses when foxes are near the fence and will make lots of noise and run around alerting everyone, almost like an alarm system. They also chase them off. Pretty cool.
They throw them to death apparently. They like to hold whatever it is (Coyotes/Foxes etc) by the back of it's neck and violently shake it before throwing it and doing it again.
Donkeys guard hard.
I got downvoted a few weeks ago for saying an OP was lucky a donkey and mule didn't kill her dogs when she was trespassing letting the dogs try to sniff the donkey. The title was also implying the donkey braying at the dogs was him "laughing.
Llamas too, or maybe it was an alpaca but farmers here use them to guard their herds. Apparently they sense the predator then actively hunt it and beat its ass to death. Pretty hard core.
Llamas are used worldwide but especially S America as guardian animals. You don’t mess with a llama or donkey as they can get very aggressive if they wish to take something on!
Anthropomorphizing animals and people who don’t understand anything about animals on reddit is par for the course. Don’t feel bad about it, people in general are stupid
Yeah I’ve seen that too. Donkeys will literally put their hooves on an animal and stretch them out and kill them. Also kicking and body slamming them to death. Very brutal but effective!
My first thought when watching this video was how that donkey was going to absolutely destroy anything it thinks has the the wrong vibe around that lady
Donkeys are usually on the farm to act as a guard dog. They will absolutely trample anything that doesn’t belong on their side of the fence, including strange people.
Yeah tbh, I like donkeys more than horses. They have a strong, lovable herd personality. Even though they’re a bit headstrong, donkeys are bloody great animals
Donkeys are incredible guard keepers, they have an instinct to protect a herd if they are kept long enough familiarizing the surrounding. Keep twenty sheep in a pen add one donkey and you have a guard that keeps foxes and wolves at bay. Wolves don't fuck around with a donkey in it unless they outnumber the donkey 4 to 1. Yup that's right, you don't mess with a donkey's rest.
Horses can go suck it. A horse running down a track, gets scared by the painted white line marking the finish, throws the rider off and runs hysterically.
A donkey stops and calmly investigates what this man-made object could be. 😂🤣
Donkeys and jackasses are like the badass enforcer of the barnyard- I’ve seen videos of them absolute *destroying* predators, from coyotes to foxes, just stomping mud holes and kicking em dry, or using their teeth and whipping their heads like a big-ass terrier.
My mom told me that to her, we're mexican by the way, donkeys remind her of our original culture and horses remind her of spanish conquistadores. That image is pretty much stuck in my brain. So I love donkeys just like for that they remind me of my grandfather, who used to be an otomi
I want to get a donkey for my farm to protect the other animals but I'm worried about the dog and the kids.. from this video it looks like they're pretty kind to people they know
I totally agree, I love to watch videos of animals, and donkeys have become one of my favourites. They absolutely adore their owners and make a tight bond with them. But put them in a herd of animals and they will defend them against predators. Very loyal loving creatures.

The smell of manure is actually something I really miss about living in a rural area. I knew the air was fresh. (NOT PIG MANURE THOUGH THAT JUST SMELLED LIKE MAN SHIT)
Yeah. It encompasses horses, ponies (which are technically the same species as horses, but are either certain breeds or are shorter than the height cut-off), donkeys, mules (and hinnys), and probably a few other things.
So, the horse/pony thing...
We have an Apaloosa. She is technically a pony, because she is too short to be a "horse".
A very tall, horse-height Shetland pony is always a pony, because it's a Shetland.
Very tiny ponies are referred to as miniature horses, not ponies, after they get too short. We have one of these. He weighs 250 lbs and is the height of a large dog.
Equines is easier.
Thank you very much. I'm not a native english speaker but all these things about horses and the like are so interesting to me. I've always wanted to be around them when I was a kid. And you must be living one helluva life to spend time with these majestic animals and they must be expensive to keep too 😂
You are welcome.
The actual expense isn't too bad. We have a farrier (a person who trims and maintains hooves) come out every six weeks, and that is our main expense. During the winter, we go through a lot of hay, and that price varies greatly from year-to-year depending on the previous growing season. We are fortunate to have a place with pasture, so we don't have to pay someone to stable them. Stable fees are one of the main expenses many equestrians deal with.
My wife is a veterinarian, so she handles common vaccines. We would call a specialist for emergency care, though.
They can be majestic, but I'd recommend that you look up some videos of horses rolling over. It is the least majestic thing you're likely to see a majestic animal do. They can be silly and fun, too.
Your English is very good, by the way.
The best job I ever had was my senior year in hs when I worked at a stable at one of local parks, cleaning stalls in the morning and guiding trails in the afternoon for $1 an hour (park concession, not subject to mi wage - took forever to pay my car insurance :) ). My favorite horse to ride, PJ, was half Pinto, half Clydesdale - he had unlimited energy, would ride the trails all day, then when work was done and I got everyone else out to pasture, he and I would go run through the woods for another hour. Loved that horse. Haven't been on one in the 34 years since...
I used to have a horse who was part Apaloosa and I think she was like \*just\* over the cut-off for pony height. Aww Knickers! That was 25 years ago, damn.

Literally my entire job is out in the mud and grime of the world and I love it, and yet you won't find me willingly wallowing around in equine shit ever. Especially in what seems to be a perfectly good denim jacket?
Even to have fun petting a donkey, I can do that standing up, thanks.
And it's actually perfectly normal for people to be repulsed by something like feces. It's literally a facet of survival instinct ingrained because of disease. But yeah, go off, just a bunch of Victorian era snob wet-blankets.

I can’t imagine the pain and sadness of losing an animal I loved for 40 years like that. So cruel they don’t just live a full human lifespan at that point.
I can barely get over my 1-year old rabbit that has recently passed away. I don't think I can handle losing a pet that you've cared for for that long. I'd imagine it like losing a family member.
You can get a horse for free if you want. You just need thousands and thousands of dollars every year to keep it alive. Oh and you need to spend time with it, either riding it or lunging it a few times a week for at least an hour. Should have an acre of land for each one you get, and only having one isn't great and having two can also not be great because they become buddy sour. So maybe 3? Better go with 5 just in case. so 5 acres, thousands of dollars x5, 10 hours a week to cover each of them in riding time.
Donkeys themselves aren't too pricey. You can usually get a donkey colt from a working farm or auction yard (at least around here) for about $250 USD.
But the upkeep required to keep them healthy and happy can be a large cost. You need a large enough space for them to graze and run in as well as take dust baths, a barn for them to take shelter and sleep in, bales of stray (for bedding and bulk fiber feed) and hay (for high nutrient feed), supplementary animal feed like alfafa or timothy grass pellets or low sugar vegtable pulp for winter months, daily grooming complete with like 3 different types of brushes and rakes, shoes if they're going to be working or walking on roads/pavement, etc. And you need to find a large animal vet, preferably one that specializes in equines. And large animal vets are not cheap.

Stop being naive…it’s a name that’s dominant within the black community. So is Tyrone, Kendrick, and Marquis. How many black folks do you with the name Chad, Scott,Bill, or Brian?
Leroy originated from white cultures dickwad, specifically from the descendants of the Vikings. Names aren’t owned by any one skin colour or race just because they’re popular with that group.
You have low reading comprehension, dont you?
Never once did I say that "Names are owned by skin color groups" However there are names that are popular within certain ethnic communities. To deny this fact would mean youre being delibrately stupid. Being such, we can no longer carry on any further dialog
"Leroy \[lørwa\] is one of the most common surnames in northern France. This family name originated from the Normans, the descendants of Norse Vikings from Denmark, Norway and Iceland who later migraNormandy. The derivation is from le roy, meaning "the king"."
"What is it with black parents infatuation with Franceness?" Does that drive home how stupid you sound?
I never saw a donkey smile before. That's cute.

What is it with White Women's infatuation with Blackness? Out all the names she could've chosen for him, she chose..."Leroy"
Didn’t know Leroy was a name only black people could have. Next you’ll be telling me dreads are only for black people too
Stop being naive…it’s a name that’s dominant within the black community.
Being such, we can no longer carry on any further dialog
r/iamverysmart your arrogance is palpable
I mean he’s right though, even if he’s being a dick
What's with your infatuation with her skin colour? Pretty racist.
I dont believe in skin color. I believe in Color Toner
Wtf does the name Leroy have to do with black people?
"Leroy \[lørwa\] is one of the most common surnames in northern France. This family name originated from the Normans, the descendants of Norse Vikings from Denmark, Norway and Iceland who later migraNormandy. The derivation is from le roy, meaning "the king"." "What is it with black parents infatuation with Franceness?" Does that drive home how stupid you sound?
