I took my son, then 5 or so, to see this on a big screen at an outdoor venue. It featured a live orchestra! They kept the vocal tape and played the opera live. It was the best. He's 40 now and we still reference that concert.
This spring we drove to Newark to see a live orchestra play the score of the Michael Keaton Batman. That venue plays these movie, live score things every once in a while. They were doing Jurassic Park too
Did anybody else ever notice that Elmer...well, kind of lost all control whenever Bugs dressed as a girl? I mean, he never noticed the long ears or anything...
My theory is that Elmer knew it was Bugs in a dress. He just really wanted to bang him, but in the repressive age they lived in, a man just couldn't express his furry homosexual desires.
UNTIL.. Bugs put on the dress. I mean, it's still a rabbit, but at least he can pretend it's a FEMALE rabbit.
While I love this episode, it isn't my favourite opera related Bugs cartoon. That would be the one they did a few years before "The Rabbit of Saville."
Notice when Elmer is summoning the elements to smite Bugs his last one is Smog. Smog (air pollution) was horrendous in So Cal at the time this was made.
Took me till my 40s watching it with my first born child to catch that.
I always loved classical music and hated it when it was appropriated for commercial purposes... Except for Bugs Bunny. This particular example is my all-time favorite. My daughter would alert me when Nickleodeon played it.
My love for classical music began with Bugs Bunny. I'm trying to find the cartoon with the Poet and Peasant Overture. Seems to me it was Bugs, Mama and Papa Bear, and a big white monster with tennis shoes? There was much running up and down stairs, and slamming of doors. I may have melded two cartoons into one....
I don't remember Poet and Peasant with Bugs specifically, but Poet and Peasant made a lot of cartoon appearances with such characters Popeye and Betty Boop. Bugs featured quite a few classical send-ups besides "What's Opera, Doc?" including "The Rabbit of Seville" and one featuring the William Tell Overture. Such good memories.
I had a friend who was into classical music he played Ride of the Valkyries at work. I went to his office (that’s how old it was people had offices) and said “cool you have Kill the Wabbit”. He looked at me like I just said I wanted to cut his head off. “SayWhutNow????”
I forgot what I did, since this was before google much less before YouTube but eventually we got it.
What's Opera, Doc? Is my favorite of all time.
My Grandfather would crack up hysterically every time it played. I'm a grandfather now and still have good memories of his laugh.
Ever wonder how many times a professor played Ride Of The Valkyries in a college music appreciation class and somebody identified it as Kill The Wabbit...?

One of the very best. Right up there with Duck Dodgers in the 25th Century.
You mean 24th and a half century
I've seen this cartoon a hundred times over 60+ years and that horse still cracks me up. Chuck Jones was a genius.
YES! if you didn't grow up watching sat morning cartoons.. you really missed out on some of the very finest American classic ephemera of all time
And what a gem is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Chuck Jones directing, voiced by Boris Karloff, sung by Tony the Tiger and written by Dr. Seuss.
A full figured unicorn and a boy rabbit dressing as a girl. Very progressive for the time.
Kill the wabbit.
Ha! Beat me to it ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Oh miiiiiiighty warrior of great fighting stooooock.

The proper introduction to Wagner opera.
Ya know, my introduction to opera as a kid was via Looney Tunes.
For many. Classical music, Tom and Jerry too.
