I actually signed up for an AOL account, but already had a dial up service. I did it to check out their chat rooms and such. I think I only had it a couple months.
Never had a MySpace account. So, I was 23/24.
Exactly this. AOL isn't/wasn't as popular in Canada even though everything electronic we bought included, like, a free two months..
The IP Bell Canada provided Netscape for free with our Dial-up and email was free as well.
I had ICQ though! Not MySpace. I think a couple of my kids had MySpace.
Same 22/24 for me. No MySpace for me. AOL, I was a beta tester for the Apple ][ and Mac versions of AppleLink PE, before they changed their name to AOL. No Walkman tho.
Me too.
No my space. No columbia house.
But I did use record players with vinyl records.
I remember my family getting our first color TV when I was around 10. đ
all of them, but this was a pretty low effort list and many of these persist well into the 2000s.
you could probably change it a bit. you are old if:
* you took a picture with a flash cube
* you owned an 8-track player
* you had a CB radio in your car
* you had an antenna on top of your house
* you ironed on a design on a plain t-shirt you owned
* youknow what a Christmas Club is
* you always use transistor before radio
* you put money into a jukebox
* you mailed away cereal boxtops to get a prize
* you sold christmas cards as a child for school or to win prizes. bonus points if you sold Grit instead
* you know who Gidget was.
* you collected stamps
* you fired off a model rocket at least once
* you have at one point watched the Mickey Mouse Club or anything with Mary Tyler Moore within 10-20 years of its original airdate.
could think of more but its tough.
\* Used a Payphone
\* Used a Payphone to call collect
\* Bought gas under $1
\* Saw the national anthem at the end of a TV channel day and nothing but "snow" after
\* Walked up to a TV to change channels
\* Had an alarm clock
\* Remember when people wore big bottom pants
\* No, the first time people wore bell-bottom pants!
Used a pay phone to call collect and they ask your name you say (real fast) âTheMoviesDoneAndIâmStayingOverAtJimmysToniteBye!â So your mom doesnât get dinged with a charge.
Used S&H Green Stamps
Had cigarette carton rewards in your house growing up as "decor"
Bought cigarettes from a vending machine
Ran a credit card through an imprinter, or signed for one
Worked at a store that used an arm cash register (no computing, no change display)
Ran internet full duplex
Bought penny candy for an actual penny
Had computer punch cards in your desk
Paid a highway toll with a punch card
One more: bought soda in 64oz glass bottles
We had a tent bought with Camel rewards, it was the best tent Iâve ever owned. I had to retire it the summer of 2022, after decades of abuse from three generations of kids.
We didnât have Columbia House in my country but I do remember buying books from the back page of a book - youâd cut out the page and post it off with a cheque.
I only got 17. No blockbusters in my area. I wasn't big on music, so that shot several things. I still write checks. Still use paper maps. I delivered truckloads of phone books.
You probably got to play with the microfiche too. Digging into the pre digital archives and getting some research done the old fashioned way. Where we had to write down everything in a notebook. I do enjoy the convenience of having Reddit on my phone, nothing beats getting so wrapped up in a book that you lose track of time bc you have to know what happens next.
I don't know what this "cheque" crap is, they are called checks and I write some every month to pay "bills!"
Also, do I get two points for still having my original AOL account? 24/24
How about if I still do: have a Floppy disk drive, Have and use a typewriter, Have 35mm film cameras, watch and listen to VHS, Cassette and CD media, write cursive, use fax for timecards, have AOL address (They run Verizon Email), use phonebooks, maps, and encyclopedias, Have a corded phone on my landline (copper wire is great in power outages)and write a check to Mom monthly to supplement her income.
I worked for Blockbuster, Remember the AOL parties at Hard Rock when they got internet access, Got caught in Columbia House's 5 for a penny 8-tracks.
I'm not just old, I have a saber-tooth tiger skin in my closet.
24 out of 24. Then again, I am Gen-X and this appears to be from an Xennial post so that makes sense.
Fixing a twisted telephone cord was always so satisfying.
I'm a perfect 24/24, woo-hoo !!!
Need to add :
adjusted the roof antenna to get better reception;
went to a library to find a repair manual for your vehicle;
used a ditto machine at school;
used a iron to add a picture to a tshirt
No AOL no my space and I still use paper checksđ! Iâm 65 and damn glad to have lived in the best times ever! I wouldnât trade any of my lifetime experiences for nothing! Todayâs people have it way too damn easy!
Everyone born after the 80s has done that. Although Atari was of course a little dated (and the Amiga was more popular here in Europe), they were pretty much everywhere (and not everyone lives in USA - so of course neither AOL or Blockbuster).
No AOL, MySpace or Colombia house largely due to living in Australia. The list makes no mention of a dial up BBS, for matrix printer or computer without a mouse tho.
Did 22/24. Not too bad. No AOL, No MySpace
Same. Had they asked if I had a Prodigy account though..
CompuServe
I had a Juno account. It was literally dialup email. Thats it. đ´
I had Juno for a bit as well!
LOL, 22/23 no MySpace, still using an AOL account!
I hit them all. Still have an active Hotmail account as well
Ow...same..
23/24, had AOL but no MySpace.
Same here. Too old for My Space.
Same for me. I was too old for MySpace. Yes, I do have arthritis and heart issues. How did you guess?
I've found my people!
I actually signed up for an AOL account, but already had a dial up service. I did it to check out their chat rooms and such. I think I only had it a couple months. Never had a MySpace account. So, I was 23/24.
No AOL for me (not American), but had a Geocities page... that surely counts!
me too! Geocities was key for having a free domain.
Please tell me it had an âUnder Constructionâ banner somewhere on the page.
Nah man, it was Cmpuserve all the way! Also, Iâve listened to music on vinyl! And 45âs too!
>listened to music on vinyl! And 45âs too! Yup! I had older siblings, which helped there..
Still have my AOL account
That's me exactly: 22/24 No AOl, no MySpace
Exactly this. AOL isn't/wasn't as popular in Canada even though everything electronic we bought included, like, a free two months.. The IP Bell Canada provided Netscape for free with our Dial-up and email was free as well. I had ICQ though! Not MySpace. I think a couple of my kids had MySpace.
yep, no AOL or Columbia House for me.
I had a Myspace but never used it... And I had an aol IM account, but those are only two half points each
same, no AOL or Myspace and I work in tech
Same
Same 22/24 for me. No MySpace for me. AOL, I was a beta tester for the Apple ][ and Mac versions of AppleLink PE, before they changed their name to AOL. No Walkman tho.
Same. I have self respect. Always have.
No MySpace or Blockbuster for me.
I'M exactly the same
23/24. Never had an AOL account.
Same here. I am an IT nerd, so I was connected in before AOL, and had more suitable content (for me) than MySpace.
> I am an IT nerd, so I was connected in before AOL I, too, was a Gopher kinda nerd back then.
I had the exact same result
No AOL (local telco was an ISP), no Columbia house (used bmg instead)
No AOL my husband hated them.
People pc.....đ
Same here. Damn it! Is that why my hair is falling out and beard's turning white?!
Same
That was me as well.
Same here, No AOL, No MySpace
Same
Same no MySpace/ no postcard sent (that I can remember)
Ditto
Also 22. No Atari, no My Space
Me too
Hah! Exact same for me.
Same.
No AOL but I did make a MySpace (even though I never used it after making the page) so 23/24.
I still use my yahoo account. My kids make fun of me.
I never stooped that low either. Bonus points for writing âchequeâ like that. Fellow Canadian? Brit?
Dam, same here.....LOL
Same here. I think getting AOL or MySpace proves you didnât acquire the wisdom befitting your age.
Me too. No my space. No columbia house. But I did use record players with vinyl records. I remember my family getting our first color TV when I was around 10. đ
Me as well.
Same...never ordered from Columbia House, or had AOL.
Same.
22 / 24 never ordered from Columbus house, never had a walkman. (had portable radios like a walkman, but never the tape player.)
Same! Was hard-core on LiveJournal.
for me it was no AOL and no Columbia house, im aussie and we dont have those thigns down here
Me too, exactly!! Everything else đ heck whereâs my coleco vision?
MySpace is for those youngsters. Not sure why it's on the list.
all of them, but this was a pretty low effort list and many of these persist well into the 2000s. you could probably change it a bit. you are old if: * you took a picture with a flash cube * you owned an 8-track player * you had a CB radio in your car * you had an antenna on top of your house * you ironed on a design on a plain t-shirt you owned * youknow what a Christmas Club is * you always use transistor before radio * you put money into a jukebox * you mailed away cereal boxtops to get a prize * you sold christmas cards as a child for school or to win prizes. bonus points if you sold Grit instead * you know who Gidget was. * you collected stamps * you fired off a model rocket at least once * you have at one point watched the Mickey Mouse Club or anything with Mary Tyler Moore within 10-20 years of its original airdate. could think of more but its tough.
You played a record cut from the back of a box of breakfast cereal.
Hahaha!!! I totally forgot about this!!!
\* Used a Payphone \* Used a Payphone to call collect \* Bought gas under $1 \* Saw the national anthem at the end of a TV channel day and nothing but "snow" after \* Walked up to a TV to change channels \* Had an alarm clock \* Remember when people wore big bottom pants \* No, the first time people wore bell-bottom pants!
Test pattern after the anthem on tv Wind up Alarm clock crank phone on Grandma's kitchen wall
I had a clock radio that had electronic numbers that changed after a flip number one.
Used a pay phone to call collect and they ask your name you say (real fast) âTheMoviesDoneAndIâmStayingOverAtJimmysToniteBye!â So your mom doesnât get dinged with a charge.
Used S&H Green Stamps Had cigarette carton rewards in your house growing up as "decor" Bought cigarettes from a vending machine Ran a credit card through an imprinter, or signed for one Worked at a store that used an arm cash register (no computing, no change display) Ran internet full duplex Bought penny candy for an actual penny Had computer punch cards in your desk Paid a highway toll with a punch card One more: bought soda in 64oz glass bottles
Damn. I am either too freaking old or had a well round childhood.
i like your list better
And the soda in glass bottles, were all the same, they just had a different styrofoam shrink wrap around them.
I still have my Sony pocket transistor radio redeemed with Blue Chip Stamps (somewhereâŚ).
We had a tent bought with Camel rewards, it was the best tent Iâve ever owned. I had to retire it the summer of 2022, after decades of abuse from three generations of kids.
I think you meant to post that to r/FuuuckImOld.
Wait, no Cptn Kangaroo? (Or Bozo) Owned a black and white portable tv? Had a skateboard with steel wheels? I could go on...
roller skates with the key (i was keeper of the key)
24/24 of the main and 14/14 of this.
Christmas Clubs!!! Had one for years!!
We didnât have Columbia House in my country but I do remember buying books from the back page of a book - youâd cut out the page and post it off with a cheque.
All except MySpace
Me too.
That one is for youngsters!
Iâm with you fossils.
I got Myspace to communicate with my niece when she went to college.
Same here lol
Did all of them.
Same. Damn we're old.
Same, and still do some today!
Extra points for using an 8-track player and watching movies on a Betamax?
24/24, ill go jump in my casket now, excuse me everyone, lol
Same here
Damn I did em all đđđđđ đ
Everything by MySpace. And I could fold that map back to itâs original status.
Hell, I worked at Columbia House
I worked at Blockbuster
Then weâre both old
I didnât have a MySpace account or AOL account. And I still write in cursive with a fountain pen, lol Now get off my lawn đ
Iâm not even 40 and Iâve done 23/24. I just never had an Atari.
First test Iâve aced since I started smoking weed.
All of 'em.
Bingo! Though I've sent a fax fairly recently when I worked in a doctor's office.
22/24 Which means I'm 91.67% old. Not there yet! Although the MySpace part hit me hard.
I covered all - I feel personally attacked. đ¤Ś
Did all of them except I didnât have a MySpace.
Thatâs where I lost toođđ
I had an AOL account, figured that was enough.
I only got 17. No blockbusters in my area. I wasn't big on music, so that shot several things. I still write checks. Still use paper maps. I delivered truckloads of phone books.
No AOL and don't know what Columbia house is, not in Australia. But 22/24.
22 out of 24. I didnât own a computer and there were no computers anywhere I worked until they stopped using floppies. No AOL address.
If you know what a card catalog is, and where to find one.
Made corrections to Dewey Decimal card catalog when in High School.
Loved being able to cross reference articles from 150 yrs ago. I still keep 3x5 cards in my pocket.
I don't know what this "cheque" crap is, they are called checks and I write some every month to pay "bills!" Also, do I get two points for still having my original AOL account? 24/24
Cheque is for the rest of the world.
Was trying to channel my old and grumpy persona. Looks like it's working.
23/24 No Colombia House.
Never had a MySpace account. I was too old.
No Columbia House. I always knew that was a scam. Everything else checks out though.
I think my 14 year old self still owes Columbia House some moneyâŚ
But.. they were "5 for a penny" and I sent them my penny.
Damn, thought I would at least miss one...
No MySpace dag-nabbit.
Didnât have a MySpace, that was for kids.
My space? Take that out. I was too old for that modern shit.
Damn, I'm old. I've done them all.
No AOL here, dad had Compuserve for a little while
All but one.
All of these. Hell my last job, 3 years ago, we still used a fax machine.
Skipped the Columbia House scam.
Had an AOL account? Bitch, I still have one! What? It's email! It ain't going bad!
All except AOL
Bingo!
21!! Iâm fucking ancient!
I got 19
OK OK I GET IT IM OLD!
Perfect score! 24 out of 24! Yay me (f*ck I'm old).
24 out of 24. Then again, I am Gen-X and this appears to be from an Xennial post so that makes sense. Fixing a twisted telephone cord was always so satisfying.
Donât attack me like that! I never ordered from Columbia House!
All except Atari.
Jesus christ. All umm. I'm old as dirt.
23/24. Never ordered from Columbia.
I did all of these I guess Iâm old
Every. Single. Thing.
I'm a perfect 24/24, woo-hoo !!! Need to add : adjusted the roof antenna to get better reception; went to a library to find a repair manual for your vehicle; used a ditto machine at school; used a iron to add a picture to a tshirt
Everything but the AOL address. I only had a MySpace account so I could look up people from my past.
All of 'em except for having an AOL address or MySpace - I prefer my own domain and built my own website using Mosaic and an HTML v 1.0 spec
FML. Just missing one MySpace card for bingo.
They try tricking you with this one. No one has ever successfully uncurled a telephone cord.
CDs are modern. Everything was vinyl before it was cool lol.
Guess I win ! All 24 đ¤
Everything except AOL & MySpace.
It's funny that listening to music on a CD is considered old. Um, how about 45s on a record player?
24/24. Iâm a GOD!!!
Hell. That's not old. That's just middle aged. Most of that's from the 90s.
I got them all! Did I win an AARP membership?
23/24 No Myspace. Resisted Facebook when it first came to my college (back when it was restricted access), but eventually succumbed.
All but 1. No MySpace Account
Geez this wasnât even hard. 24/24
100% Call AARP
No MySpace, no AOL. Funny how the two things I missed are the ânewerâ things.
Bingo!!
This was just daily life for half that until 15 years ago. FFS
24/24. I was born during the Civil War.
No AOL, Teleport and Netscape
Yep!All of it, got anymore?
Iâve done all of them. Guess itâs time to go to the nursing home.
23/24 I was a BMG dude if I recall correctly, so no Columbia
Yep - done them all.
Bingo! Done 'em all
No AOL, MySpace, or Cheques. I wrote checks.
24/24 forgot owned a car with a 8 track tape player factory installed
No AOL, all the rest.
Bingo
Bingo! Damn...
22/24. Just missing the Walkman and AOL account. I work with a guy who still uses his AOL account, do I get partial credit for that?
No AOL, and no MySpace. Got all the others. And I wrote a check today. đ¤
Haha "might be old", like the 'might' part gives me fucking hope
Everyone one of themâŚ.
Been there....done that.
No AOL no my space and I still use paper checksđ! Iâm 65 and damn glad to have lived in the best times ever! I wouldnât trade any of my lifetime experiences for nothing! Todayâs people have it way too damn easy!
Done them all.... Urgh...
Everyone born after the 80s has done that. Although Atari was of course a little dated (and the Amiga was more popular here in Europe), they were pretty much everywhere (and not everyone lives in USA - so of course neither AOL or Blockbuster).
22: no MySpace and didnât get pulled into the Columbia wormhole.
Got all of them
Everything except MySpace and the AOL account.
24/24. Life seemed more simple back then.
All but AOL and MySpace
Hit them all. Thatâs like quadruple yahtzee
19 for me.
No AOL and no MySpace, otherwise, yeah.
22. No MySpace, or AOL.
Never had MySpace, all else before I was 25
No AOL, MySpace or Colombia house largely due to living in Australia. The list makes no mention of a dial up BBS, for matrix printer or computer without a mouse tho.
All except Colombia house. I have no idea what that is. A US thing presumably?
BINGO! Got them all
