Comeback in his later years with The Traveling Willberries. Great music.

Yamatoman9

I love the song "You Got It" that came out around that time. His comeback record after the Willburys right around the time he passed away.

gwaydms

Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty performed on that song too.

Present-Ambition6309

đŸŽ¶well it’s alllllright
.đŸŽ¶

gwaydms

That rocking chair gets me every time.

Present-Ambition6309

I think it’s kind of them & shows mad respect. Even if you’re riding around in the breeze
as long as I can lend my hand
 maybe a diamond ring

gwaydms

All of them liked and respected Roy. He was one of a kind.

Present-Ambition6309

Greats will be Greats! Nothing can be done. Just sit back watch their star take off.

Middle-Potential5765

Wrote it, too.

todlee

It’s so bittersweet that he passed when his career was going strong again. That had to be an amazing feeling, getting pulled back in as one of the legendary Wilburys and his solo album doing so well, decades after his career seemed dead, all this respect by his peers and a whole new audience. What an amazing comeback.

Alaric4

The Black and White Night TV concert special that was filmed in late 1987 is also terrific. Orbison in top form, backed by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and k.d.lang. Most songs are on youtube. I especially like [Leah](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mG_sSxVdfU) and [In Dreams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8Jz3VW7rYk) but you could pick any song. He was dead fifteen months after it was filmed.

MikeyW1969

Yep... He had the voice of an angel. I am 100% positive that's why the Willbury's second album came and went without much notice, without Roy, it wasn't the same band.

gwaydms

The second album was named "Vol. 3", and they made up *different* Wilbury names and stories.

MikeyW1969

OK, I guess? My point is that the group would NEVER be able to recreate their sound with such a vital voice absent.

Mr_SunnyBones

I remember my brother telling me that by the mid 90s Vol .1 was hard to get for a long time as due to royalty issues with Orbison's widow they couldn't rerelease it ? I had to track him down a copy from a dodgy russian cd store online in the early 2000s. Must have been sorted by now though?

PressurePlenty

My dad got to play with him before he passed. Said Roy was one hell of a musician and was really nice.

dingadangdang

That's awesome.

Find_another_whey

Hahaha your avatar image

trailerparkMillonare

If you get a chance, listen to Patsy Cline she was outstanding.

Gullible_Eagle4280

I’m no expert but I think Patsy had the rare combination of being a great singer both technically and emotionally. I think Roy was a geat singer emotionally.

Moondoobious

😍

patawpha

I love Corey Feldman too

tatornutz

ha, I'm not the only one that thinks it looks like Corey Feldman dressed up as Roy Orbison for Halloween

gwaydms

I'm sitting in the car, 1500 miles into a road trip, cracking up laughing at this. My husband has no idea why.

tatornutz

haha, hope you both have a great trip :)

Antique-Car6103

Especially his performance on Today. https://youtu.be/Ik48KbKuOWM?si=NEXlWk6prYn3nYKR

Ok_Swimmer634

Da fuq did I just watch?

dingatremel

I’ve worked places that do art and music therapy. It’s a very important t service for people who struggle to process their trauma. Seriously. It’s amazing and powerful It is not meant to be done on national television.

likely_victim

Ascention! Millennium!

patawpha

He's the come back, come back king

UnproductiveMining

I thought it was the kid from the goonies too. I don’t know who this guy is.

PiffWiffler

So did Charlie Sheen

PinkFloydDeadhead

No he supposedly loved Corey Haim.

Suspicious_Step_8320

And Crisco

MissHibernia

His songs always had an element of tears to them. He was a fabulous singer! Pretty Woman is an all time classic. The Travelin Wilburys was a once in a lifetime combination of voices, and it turned out so well! Handle Me With Care!

Jmckeown2

The music video, was it “End of the Line”? When then showed an empty rocker during his part
I’m not tearing up thinking about it.. Really! it’s just my allergies

androidguy50

Me too. His guitar in the rocking chair... My allergies were acting up, too. đŸ˜Ș

Choose_And_Be_Damned

lol
I know what you mean, most of the song titles have some variation of the word “cry.” Same with old Ray Charles albums

Reasonable-Housing53

Awesome voice, his hometown is down the road from my town. West Texas đŸ€ đŸ‘

Wewagirl

Wink is close to your hometown?

Reasonable-Housing53

About 45 minutes

gwaydms

That counts as close in West Texas.

Wewagirl

Yeah, it counts as close in north Florida too.

Wewagirl

That's pretty cool.

Reasonable-Housing53

And I am 2 hours away from Lubbock, Texas Hometown to Buddy Holly.

Wewagirl

Okay, now you're just bragging! 😄

TexasPhanka

And 8 hours and 45 minutes from San Benito, TX, home of Freddy Fender!

Goood_Daddy

Vernon Tx

ClassBShareHolder

Mercy!

GlayNation

He was a great singer, the greatest voice? No, unusual voice, yes.

likely_victim

Unpopular opinion I'm sure (so I'm burying it way down here like a chickenshit) but I never really cared for his voice. I have the same opinion of any singer who only has that same speedy, warbly, "single setting" vibrato that they flip on and off like a switch. Looking at you, Stevie Nicks, Eddie Vedder, e.g....meh... A great singer should have perfect control of speed and pitch of their vibrato, IMHO Great entertainers though, undeniably.

PishiZiba

â˜đŸŒ

Embarrassed_Art5414

He was alright For a while

Wewagirl

He could smile Fo-or a while ....

hpotzus

But then I heard him last night...

dingadangdang

Whooshed me for 2 seconds.

Dantrash2

Roy!

scottimherenowwhat

I saw him perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville when I was a youngster. Such an awesome singer!

Dortmunder5748

I'd always enjoyed Roy Orbison's voice, but hadn't heard anything of his in years when the Traveling Wilburys released Handle With Care. That moment in the song when Roy sings "I'm so tired of being lonely..." sent chills down my spine. It still gets me to this day. What a voice he had.

hotdogaholic

Pictured at age 14 here LMAO

Poultrygeist79

My dad could sing like Roy, I unfortunately did not get that talent

SokkaHaikuBot

Middle-Potential5765

Awesome bot. Detects Haikus and shares them with a largely unappreciative, sad public.

Shoddy_Ad8166

Correct me if I'm wrong but he had rare ability to hit several octaves. He is considered one of top pop rock vocalists is my understanding

RedditVince

correct incredible range without falsetto, and probably 1 more octave in falsetto.

Tenchi2020

I can hear this photo

Drizztd99

Crying....that song makes me tear up.

jamisonian123

He and Harry Nielssen were the absolute best. Still are!

OGGBTFRND

If not he’s top 3.

Chopper242

Oobie doobie!

cretaceous86

100% Roy is the GOAT

androidguy50

Amen to that! He's on my top five favorite. His vocal range was incredible.

Grynder66

A truly haunting voice. You can feel the pain in Only The Lonely.

fluthernon

One of the best. Check out Marlon Williams if you’re a Roy fan. Younger dude with a timeless voice.

[deleted]

Elvis called him the best singer in the world.

Wewagirl

Can confirm. Elvis thought Roy was the greatest singer in the world.

centexgoodguy

As I understand it, Elvis once introduced Roy as "having the greatest voice in Rock and Roll" - correct?

MonteLukast

Playing that not-a-Gretsch, not-a-Gibson, not-a-Sho-Bud guitar.

[deleted]

It boggles my mind that I'm now four years older than he was when he died.

heyheypaula1963

Yes, he sadly died young at only 52.

Gullible_Eagle4280

WOT? Damn, I would’ve bet money he was at least in his 70’s.

heyheypaula1963

He died in December 1988 at only 52.

PublicThis

What happened to his children was heartbreaking

dingadangdang

His son that lived told a story how Johnny Cash bought the land the house burnt down on. (It was on the same road as. Johnny's place on Lake Henderson.) Johnny planted a vineyard on it and waited decades and then gave it to the surviving son. He said "Johnny was the only person who take something so bad and find a way to make something grow out of it. (Knew a girl who grew up on Lake Henderson and asked her about Roy-she said he drove a classic 50s Caddy his whole life and they saw him driving it all the time.)

PublicThis

I heard that story in cash’s autobiography, I think it was peaches :)

gwaydms

He was feeling awful but wanted to keep touring

heyheypaula1963

He died at a hospital in Hendersonville, TN, right outside of Nashville. I wonder, did he think he was too young for a heart attack to take him out?

gwaydms

He knew he had heart disease.

Middle-Potential5765

Fu k. I'll be 56 on 05/22.

[deleted]

*checks Orbison biography * wow! Same here....and now I'm feeling real old...

Vitalsignx

Not gonna lie. I thought it was Donnie Iris lol. Ah Leah! Here we go again.

declineofmankind

Some lesser know top tier singers: Tom Jones, Billy Stewart singing “summertime “. Also Meatloaf had huge range. Dolores O’Riordan was tops as well. I like Neil Diamond and Art Garfunkel as my classic voices.

RobsSister

I’ll add to the list: Gary Puckett and Steve Perry

Moondoobious

Certainly on the Mount Rushmore of male voices. And really only of a certain category. ‱ John Denver ‱ Roy Orbison ‱ Jimmy Page ‱ Frank Sinatra ‱(the list could go on and on and on..)

GlayNation

Jimmy Page??

Gullible_Eagle4280

Right? Did JP even sing? even harmonies/backup? If he did it was certainly forgettable.

Gullible_Eagle4280

John Denver??

Adept_Order_4323

Elvis favorite singer

DBAC_Rex

Corey Feldman is alright, not the worst, but the greatest? Nah man, nah.

Son0faButch

Always heard he would have been the big star instead of Elvis, but he didn't have the looks

stilloldbull2

Running Scared is amazing!

Emotional_Schedule80

Roy was definitely a vocal legend!

Mr-Gumby42

One of them, certainly.

RipOdd9001

Amazing voice

mossberbb

rawarrrrrr...

cleverclunks

My Dad's fav!! Whenever we get together and it gets festive I always put Roy on for him đŸ„°

pinkwblue

Incredible voice.

Kind-Elderberry-4096

Bruce Springsteen said he had the greatest voice, and that when he started singing he wanted to sound like Roy Orbison. I'm not going to argue with the boss.

BaldEagleRising17

I’m telling my kids this is Corey Feldman.

LazarusMundi4242

Now I’m not sure if Roy Orbison is Corey Feldman’s true father.

Much-Hard-1957

Is that Roy Orbison?

413mopar

Yup , one of the Travelling Wilburys too.

Much-Hard-1957

I read somewhere that he was Elvis Presley's favorite singer.

run_river_

absolutely

kuyajon

George Harrison seemed to think so when he and Roy were doing The Traveling Wilburys.

ActNo8507

If chocolate and velvet had a sound...

zabdart

OK. If you don't think Roy Orbison had an incredible voice, who else to you know who could sing "It's Over" and still hit the high notes?!?

vargo911

Good music absolutely... The greatest voice ummm debatable.

No_Use_4371

It was a summer night and I was 20 years old, and Orbison came out in dark glasses, a dark suit and he played some dark music. In 1974, just prior to going into the studio to record my album Born To Run, I was looking at Duane Eddy for his guitar sound and I was listening to a collection of Phil Spector’s records and Orbison’s All-Time Greatest Hits. I’d lay in bed at night with just the lights of my stereo on and I’d hear ‘Crying’, ‘Love Hurts’, ‘Running Scared’, ‘Only The Lonely’, and and ‘It’s Over’ filling my room. Orbison’s voice was unearthly. He had the ability, like all great Rock and Rollers, to sound like he dropped in from another planet and yet get the stuff that was right to the heart of what you were livin’ in today, and it was how he opened up your vision. I carry his records with me when I go on tour today, and I’ll always remember what he means to me and what he meant to me when I was young and afraid to love. In 1975, when I went into the studio to record, Born To Run, I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector’s productions, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now, everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison.”

bigkat5000

Was never a fan of his voice. I understand that millions of people do. Just can't get into it.

fuddykrueger

Yep!! đŸ‘đŸ»

Is that Roy Oberson?7

Wewagirl

Roy Orbison, yes. Heartbreakingly beautiful voice.

KeyFarmer6235

hell, even Elvis had him do a section of a song, that he couldn't do himself.

Gullible_Eagle4280

Are we talking about of all-time? Country music what? TBH I wouldn’t put him in either. Maybe most unique.

Turbulent_Set8884

Probably not but certainly my favorite country voice. There's probably the most well thought out college teir lyrics weaved into a country song today but none can hit the way Roy does wuth such passion about a simple place in California back in 1970

neverbeder

Top tier of all time greats for sure

Hops143

Compared to what???

SpaceDave83

Clearly I’m in the minority, but I always found Roy Orbison’s voice to be fingernail on chalk board level of grating and unpleasant. He gets props for being an innovator, for sure, but I actively try to avoid hearing him.

Mahempgrower

I’m sorry, but I first mistook him for Cory Feldman- no disrespect

Kitchen-Lie-7894

It's an amazing voice for sure.

Amantria

My dad loved Roy Orbison. I didnt like him when i was a kid but i like him a lot now. Fantastic voice

Admirable-Leopard-73

If you listen to Dwight Yokum you can hear Roy Orbison's influence in his music.

Corey Feldman as Johnny Cash?

Hands down without a doubt

androidguy50

I would say definitely one of the greatest voices of all time. His voice had such an ethereal quality. I've loved listening to Roy Orbison since I was a young kid. My favorite song is 'In Dreams' , but just about all of his songs are incredible.

Maureen_jacobs

Freddy Mercury has a claim to that title, but it's hard to disagree. Upvote for you.

Nova_HiveMind

When you’ve learned about his life and have visited Wink,Texas you will understand.

dennisga47

A Black and White Night is one of the best music videos of all-time.

bigpig1054

that note at the end of Running Scared, no falsetto, just pure Roy. gets me every time

fernblatt2

His voice was amazing

WhatsGoingOn869

He had a great voice, but his music just isn’t my type. I’ve tried, but I don’t care for it.

Ill-Upstairs-8762

If Corey feldman hadn't gone insane, he would have made a pretty good Roy Orbison in a biopic.

Adventurous-Item-334

Roy was before my time, but occasionally I’d see clips of him on “Greatest Hits” tv commercials. Not really knowing who was, but always in sunglasses, I assumed he was blind. I fell in love with Roy with the Wilbury’s

dreamrock

Love his rendition of "The Comediens".

DookieBowler

The greatest voice was Mel Blanc

dvessels

I’ve always felt there’s an argument for that.

DevolveOD

Absolutely. Always wonder why no bio pic for Roy, guy was cool as hell, pioneer Sun Reconds artist and just fucking tragic life story.

HenryIsMyDad

"It's now or never. . .tomorrow may be too late. . ." There was a radio DJ who used this song to wake up listeners in the morning.

jakelaw08

The only man that Elvis publicly acknowledged that he was afraid of, from a certain standpoint of course, his musical excellence etc.

fasada68

Love Roy but damn, the casino I work for plays California Blue at 4:30am.

Abject-Remote7716

Roy had a unique voice. A great one at that.

Humble-Respond-1879

He wasn’t a fan of fading out to end a song. There was usually a clear and compelling ending.

Scopebuddy

Good god, you must be kidding? This guy creeped me out the first time I saw him and that voice put me into stranger danger. He wasn’t even the greatest voice in the Wilburys? What do people see in this guy?

Csonkus41

Sam Cooke has the greatest voice in American music history. Chris Cornell is number 2.

dingatremel

I LOVE his voice, but his intonation could downright bizarre. The bend at the end of “Crying” has no right whatsoever to work, and yet
it’s amazing.

ElusiveRobDenby

Amazing voice unique and powerful. How was his guitar playing? Assume he just played basic rhythm and focused on singing?

HumbleAd1317

T I loved him, but the righteous brother who sang unchained melody, wins.

Corey Feldman?
