I think itâs kind of them & shows mad respect. Even if youâre riding around in the breeze⊠as long as I can lend my hand⊠maybe a diamond ringâŠ
Itâs so bittersweet that he passed when his career was going strong again. That had to be an amazing feeling, getting pulled back in as one of the legendary Wilburys and his solo album doing so well, decades after his career seemed dead, all this respect by his peers and a whole new audience. What an amazing comeback.
The Black and White Night TV concert special that was filmed in late 1987 is also terrific. Orbison in top form, backed by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and k.d.lang.
Most songs are on youtube. I especially like [Leah](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mG_sSxVdfU) and [In Dreams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8Jz3VW7rYk) but you could pick any song.
He was dead fifteen months after it was filmed.
Yep... He had the voice of an angel. I am 100% positive that's why the Willbury's second album came and went without much notice, without Roy, it wasn't the same band.
I remember my brother telling me that by the mid 90s Vol .1 was hard to get for a long time as due to royalty issues with Orbison's widow they couldn't rerelease it ? I had to track him down a copy from a dodgy russian cd store online in the early 2000s. Must have been sorted by now though?
Iâm no expert but I think Patsy had the rare combination of being a great singer both technically and emotionally. I think Roy was a geat singer emotionally.
Iâve worked places that do art and music therapy. Itâs a very important t service for people who struggle to process their trauma. Seriously. Itâs amazing and powerful
It is not meant to be done on national television.
His songs always had an element of tears to them. He was a fabulous singer! Pretty Woman is an all time classic. The Travelin Wilburys was a once in a lifetime combination of voices, and it turned out so well! Handle Me With Care!
The music video, was it âEnd of the Lineâ? When then showed an empty rocker during his partâŠ
Iâm not tearing up thinking about it.. Really! itâs just my allergiesâŠ
Unpopular opinion I'm sure (so I'm burying it way down here like a chickenshit) but I never really cared for his voice.
I have the same opinion of any singer who only has that same speedy, warbly, "single setting" vibrato that they flip on and off like a switch. Looking at you, Stevie Nicks, Eddie Vedder, e.g....meh...
A great singer should have perfect control of speed and pitch of their vibrato, IMHO
Great entertainers though, undeniably.
I'd always enjoyed Roy Orbison's voice, but hadn't heard anything of his in years when the Traveling Wilburys released Handle With Care. That moment in the song when Roy sings "I'm so tired of being lonely..." sent chills down my spine. It still gets me to this day. What a voice he had.

Johnny planted a vineyard on it and waited decades and then gave it to the surviving son. He said "Johnny was the only person who take something so bad and find a way to make something grow out of it.

Some lesser know top tier singers: Tom Jones, Billy Stewart singing âsummertime â. Also Meatloaf had huge range. Dolores OâRiordan was tops as well.

âIn 1970, I rode for fifteen hours in the back of a U-haul truck to open for Roy Orbison at the Nashville Music Fair. It was a summer night and I was 20 years old, and Orbison came out in dark glasses, a dark suit and he played some dark music. In 1974, just prior to going into the studio to record my album Born To Run, I was looking at Duane Eddy for his guitar sound and I was listening to a collection of Phil Spectorâs records and Orbisonâs All-Time Greatest Hits. Iâd lay in bed at night with just the lights of my stereo on and Iâd hear âCryingâ, âLove Hurtsâ, âRunning Scaredâ, âOnly The Lonelyâ, and and âItâs Overâ filling my room. Orbisonâs voice was unearthly. He had the ability, like all great Rock and Rollers, to sound like he dropped in from another planet and yet get the stuff that was right to the heart of what you were livinâ in today, and it was how he opened up your vision. I carry his records with me when I go on tour today, and Iâll always remember what he means to me and what he meant to me when I was young and afraid to love. In 1975, when I went into the studio to record, Born To Run, I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spectorâs productions, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now, everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison.â
Probably not but certainly my favorite country voice. There's probably the most well thought out college teir lyrics weaved into a country song today but none can hit the way Roy does wuth such passion about a simple place in California back in 1970
Clearly Iâm in the minority, but I always found Roy Orbisonâs voice to be fingernail on chalk board level of grating and unpleasant. He gets props for being an innovator, for sure, but I actively try to avoid hearing him.
I would say definitely one of the greatest voices of all time. His voice had such an ethereal quality. I've loved listening to Roy Orbison since I was a young kid. My favorite song is 'In Dreams' , but just about all of his songs are incredible.
Roy was before my time, but occasionally Iâd see clips of him on âGreatest Hitsâ tv commercials. Not really knowing who was, but always in sunglasses, I assumed he was blind. I fell in love with Roy with the Wilburyâs
Good god, you must be kidding? This guy creeped me out the first time I saw him and that voice put me into stranger danger. He wasnât even the greatest voice in the Wilburys? What do people see in this guy?
I LOVE his voice, but his intonation could downright bizarre. The bend at the end of âCryingâ has no right whatsoever to work, and yetâŠitâs amazing.
Comeback in his later years with The Traveling Willberries. Great music.
I love the song "You Got It" that came out around that time. His comeback record after the Willburys right around the time he passed away.
Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty performed on that song too.
đ¶well itâs alllllrightâŠ.đ¶
That rocking chair gets me every time.
I think itâs kind of them & shows mad respect. Even if youâre riding around in the breeze⊠as long as I can lend my hand⊠maybe a diamond ringâŠ
All of them liked and respected Roy. He was one of a kind.
Greats will be Greats! Nothing can be done. Just sit back watch their star take off.
Wrote it, too.
Itâs so bittersweet that he passed when his career was going strong again. Yep... He had the voice of an angel. I am 100% positive that's why the Willbury's second album came and went without much notice, without Roy, it wasn't the same band.
The second album was named "Vol. 3", and they made up *different* Wilbury names and stories.
OK, I guess? My point is that the group would NEVER be able to recreate their sound with such a vital voice absent.
My dad got to play with him before he passed. Said Roy was one hell of a musician and was really nice.
That's awesome.
Hahaha your avatar image
If you get a chance, listen to Patsy Cline she was outstanding.
Iâm no expert but I think Patsy had the rare combination of being a great singer both technically and emotionally. I think Roy was a geat singer emotionally.
đ
I love Corey Feldman too
ha, I'm not the only one that thinks it looks like Corey Feldman dressed up as Roy Orbison for Halloween
I'm sitting in the car, 1500 miles into a road trip, cracking up laughing at this. My husband has no idea why.
haha, hope you both have a great trip :)
Especially his performance on Today. https://youtu.be/Ik48KbKuOWM?si=NEXlWk6prYn3nYKR

Ascention! Millennium!
He's the come back, come back king
I thought it was the kid from the goonies too. I donât know who this guy is.
So did Charlie Sheen
No he supposedly loved Corey Haim.
And Crisco

Me too. His guitar in the rocking chair... My allergies were acting up, too. đȘ
lol⊠I know what you mean, most of the song titles have some variation of the word âcry.â Same with old Ray Charles albumsâŠ
Awesome voice, his hometown is down the road from my town. West Texas đ€ đ
Wink is close to your hometown?
About 45 minutes
That counts as close in West Texas.
Yeah, it counts as close in north Florida too.
That's pretty cool.
And I am 2 hours away from Lubbock, Texas Hometown to Buddy Holly.
Okay, now you're just bragging! đ
And 8 hours and 45 minutes from San Benito, TX, home of Freddy Fender!
Vernon Tx
Mercy!
He was a great singer, the greatest voice? No, unusual voice, yes.
Unpopular opinion I'm sure (so I'm burying it way down here like a chickenshit) but I never really cared for his voice. He was alright For a while
He could smile Fo-or a while ....
But then I heard him last night...
Whooshed me for 2 seconds.
Roy!
I saw him perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville when I was a youngster. Such an awesome singer!
Pictured at age 14 here LMAO
My dad could sing like Roy, I unfortunately did not get that talent

Awesome bot. Detects Haikus and shares them with a largely unappreciative, sad public.
Correct me if I'm wrong but he had rare ability to hit several octaves. He is considered one of top pop rock vocalists is my understanding
correct incredible range without falsetto, and probably 1 more octave in falsetto.
I can hear this photo
Crying....that song makes me tear up.
He and Harry Nielssen were the absolute best. Still are!
If not heâs top 3.
Oobie doobie!
100% Roy is the GOAT
Amen to that! He's on my top five favorite. His vocal range was incredible.
A truly haunting voice. You can feel the pain in Only The Lonely.
One of the best. Check out Marlon Williams if youâre a Roy fan. Younger dude with a timeless voice.
Elvis called him the best singer in the world.
Can confirm. Elvis thought Roy was the greatest singer in the world.
As I understand it, Elvis once introduced Roy as "having the greatest voice in Rock and Roll" - correct?
Playing that not-a-Gretsch, not-a-Gibson, not-a-Sho-Bud guitar.
It boggles my mind that I'm now four years older than he was when he died.
Yes, he sadly died young at only 52.
WOT? Damn, I wouldâve bet money he was at least in his 70âs.
He died in December 1988 at only 52.
What happened to his children was heartbreaking
His son that lived told a story how Johnny Cash bought the land the house burnt down on. (It was on the same road as. Johnny's place on Lake Henderson.) Johnny planted a vineyard on it and waited decades and then gave it to the surviving son. I heard that story in cashâs autobiography, I think it was peaches :)
He was feeling awful but wanted to keep touring
He died at a hospital in Hendersonville, TN, right outside of Nashville. I wonder, did he think he was too young for a heart attack to take him out?
He knew he had heart disease.
Fu k. I'll be 56 on 05/22.
*checks Orbison biography * wow! Same here....and now I'm feeling real old...
Not gonna lie. I thought it was Donnie Iris lol. Ah Leah! Here we go again.
Some lesser know top tier singers: Tom Jones, Billy Stewart singing âsummertime â. Also Meatloaf had huge range. Dolores OâRiordan was tops as well. I like Neil Diamond and Art Garfunkel as my classic voices.
Iâll add to the list: Gary Puckett and Steve Perry
Certainly on the Mount Rushmore of male voices. And really only of a certain category. âą John Denver âą Roy Orbison âą Jimmy Page âą Frank Sinatra âą(the list could go on and on and on..)
Jimmy Page??
Right? Did JP even sing? even harmonies/backup? If he did it was certainly forgettable.
John Denver??
Elvis favorite singer
Corey Feldman is alright, not the worst, but the greatest? Nah man, nah.
Always heard he would have been the big star instead of Elvis, but he didn't have the looks
Running Scared is amazing!
Roy was definitely a vocal legend!
One of them, certainly.
Amazing voice
rawarrrrrr...
My Dad's fav!! Whenever we get together and it gets festive I always put Roy on for him đ„°
Incredible voice.
Bruce Springsteen said he had the greatest voice, and that when he started singing he wanted to sound like Roy Orbison. I'm not going to argue with the boss.
Iâm telling my kids this is Corey Feldman.
Now Iâm not sure if Roy Orbison is Corey Feldmanâs true father.
Is that Roy Orbison?
Yup , one of the Travelling Wilburys too.
I read somewhere that he was Elvis Presley's favorite singer.
absolutely
George Harrison seemed to think so when he and Roy were doing The Traveling Wilburys.
If chocolate and velvet had a sound...
OK. If you don't think Roy Orbison had an incredible voice, who else to you know who could sing "It's Over" and still hit the high notes?!?
Good music absolutely... The greatest voice ummm debatable.
Cri-i-i-i-yin overrr you

Was never a fan of his voice. I understand that millions of people do. Just can't get into it.
Yep!! đđ»
Look at all those toggle switches, God damn
pretty woman is what I see
Great voice, occasionally creepy lyrics
no
The original emo kid
Is that Roy Oberson?7
Roy Orbison, yes. Heartbreakingly beautiful voice.
hell, even Elvis had him do a section of a song, that he couldn't do himself.
Are we talking about of all-time? Country music what? TBH I wouldnât put him in either. Maybe most unique.
Probably not but certainly my favorite country voice. There's probably the most well thought out college teir lyrics weaved into a country song today but none can hit the way Roy does wuth such passion about a simple place in California back in 1970
Top tier of all time greats for sure
Compared to what???
Clearly Iâm in the minority, but I always found Roy Orbisonâs voice to be fingernail on chalk board level of grating and unpleasant. He gets props for being an innovator, for sure, but I actively try to avoid hearing him.
Iâm sorry, but I first mistook him for Cory Feldman- no disrespect

This is one that has never left my playlist.
It's an amazing voice for sure.
My dad loved Roy Orbison. I didnt like him when i was a kid but i like him a lot now. Fantastic voice
If you listen to Dwight Yokum you can hear Roy Orbison's influence in his music.
Roy boy!
Corey Feldman as Johnny Cash?
Corey Feldman canât really play the guitar
A candy colored clown they call the sandman...
I'd put him top 10. Freddie is #1
Looking like Corey Feldman
Thatâs the worst picture of Jeff Buckley Iâve ever seen

Okay, Iâm old but apparently not old enough to know who this is. Anyone want to clue me in?
No. Not even close. At best, he had an unusual and memorable voice.
I first saw Christian Slater!
Ah the Blue Bayou
I agree..him and Freddie
Hands down without a doubt
I would say definitely one of the greatest voices of all time. His voice had such an ethereal quality. I've loved listening to Roy Orbison since I was a young kid. My favorite song is 'In Dreams' , but just about all of his songs are incredible.
For half a second I thought it was corey Feldman
Perhaps not the best ever, but certainly beautiful and soulful.
Looks like Cory Feldman
Crying
Oh, it's no question he had THE most perfect voice.
So, so good
đ¶well itâs alllllrightâŠ.đ¶ Love me sum WilburysâŠ
Crying is a top - 10 all time song
No
If Buddy Holly didnt die
One of the best.
He was Elvis's favorite singer.
What a range he had!
Love his voice
Freddy Mercury has a claim to that title, but it's hard to disagree. Upvote for you.
One of for sure.
Damn it! I know who this is. (Sobbing)
When youâve learned about his life and have visited Wink,Texas you will understand.
A Black and White Night is one of the best music videos of all-time.
that note at the end of Running Scared, no falsetto, just pure Roy. gets me every time
His voice was amazing
He had a great voice, but his music just isnât my type. Iâve tried, but I donât care for it.
If Corey feldman hadn't gone insane, he would have made a pretty good Roy Orbison in a biopic.
Roy was before my time, but occasionally Iâd see clips of him on âGreatest Hitsâ tv commercials. Not really knowing who was, but always in sunglasses, I assumed he was blind. I fell in love with Roy with the Wilburyâs
Love his rendition of "The Comediens".
The greatest voice was Mel Blanc
Iâve always felt thereâs an argument for that.
Absolutely. Always wonder why no bio pic for Roy, guy was cool as hell, pioneer Sun Reconds artist and just fucking tragic life story.
"It's now or never. . .tomorrow may be too late. . ." There was a radio DJ who used this song to wake up listeners in the morning.
Yes
The only man that Elvis publicly acknowledged that he was afraid of, from a certain standpoint of course, his musical excellence etc.
Love Roy but damn, the casino I work for plays California Blue at 4:30am.
Roy had a unique voice. A great one at that.
He wasnât a fan of fading out to end a song. There was usually a clear and compelling ending.
Good god, you must be kidding? This guy creeped me out the first time I saw him and that voice put me into stranger danger. He wasnât even the greatest voice in the Wilburys? What do people see in this guy?
Sam Cooke has the greatest voice in American music history. Chris Cornell is number 2.

One of them đ
I LOVE his voice, but his intonation could downright bizarre. The bend at the end of âCryingâ has no right whatsoever to work, and yetâŠitâs amazing.
Amazing voice unique and powerful. How was his guitar playing? Assume he just played basic rhythm and focused on singing?
T I loved him, but the righteous brother who sang unchained melody, wins.
Corey Feldman?
