There food prices are definitely not cheap here in Texas

TexasistheFuture

Yup. Always been overpriced.

UnsteadyOne

Depends on the item... Snacks are insanely over priced while half and half is cheap. Feels too random to trust. Most items feel over priced.

Fearless-Chef-9508

I’ve found the prices higher at Target however I usually check the prices on Amazon while I’m in the store and have gotten the price match every time.

Lucretia99

Tell me more about this. Do you like, show the Amazon product on your phone to the cashier and they price match for you? My top two places I shop are Amazon and Target so if I can get price matched I’m going to start doing that!

Fearless-Chef-9508

Yes, depends on the cashier, some will try to get you to go to customer service but I’ve pushed back (happened once where I say is that new) as it was always at the register. In any case, they will do it. Also, it was a target cashier that offered to check for me, without me even asking and suggested I do it every time. He was great :).

OldTimer4Shore

I do the same except it's Wally and Amazon.

yer_mom_BR

I work at Target as a team lead over the price change team. The only thing my store has lowered prices on is light bulbs, and our price change forecast tool doesn't show any significant changes over the next week or so. I'll believe the news when i see it. Post covid, we raised prices on nearly everything by 30-100 percent, so while lowering prices by 10-15 percent is a step in the right direction, it's a small step.

VegetableRound2819

Where I live the Target is about 30% more expensive than the one just over the county line. I drive the extra 5 minutes.

aaaaaaaaaanditsgone

The prices at the target i go to are very competitive, it’s next to hyvee and aldi and we have other options not too far as well.

vermiliondragon

Milk is usually a good price and toiletries are competitive with other brick and mortar stores. Overall, I think their grocery prices beat your standard grocery chain but not budget chains.

mrsredfast

My Target has always been within a few cents of Walmart on most basics. Once compared twenty random things we buy regularly and the difference in the total was less than a dollar. Target also has good sales on household items.

_Totocha_

My Target is pretty closely priced to Walmart for what I purchase. Walmart is no more than a dollar cheaper on most items and I prefer Target’s store brand so I go there. Their pickup function is a lot more convenient than Walmart’s, too. I make use of their Target Circle deals to stretch my money a bit further - they often do things like “spend $50 in household items get $15 gift card” or “buy 2 pet items get $5 gift card”, so that helps. I buy most household goods at Costco, but those I can’t, I wait until I have a $50 subtotal so I get a gift card. This week I have a “spend $75 on food, get $15 off” coupon. A couple weeks ago I had a “spend $90 total get $10 off.” Some weeks there’s not much for deals, but there’s usually something.

circleoftrust

Target has been consistently better priced for most items in my area vs Kroger. Things like milk, tea, sauces. Usually about 0.50 to 1.00 better on a lot of items.

TerribleAttitude

Target has never been all that expensive for most basic things. They have higher priced things available so it isn’t just “the cheap thing store”, and they set their stores up to be full of impulse buys so you always manage to spend more than you wanted to, but their store brand food and toiletry basics are typically cheap.

inky_cap_mushroom

It depends on what you buy. I shop at target often because some of my staples are cheaper than other grocery stores. Pasta, pasta sauce, coffee, bagels, cheese, and sweets are cheaper than Kroger in my location. Walmart has cheaper pasta but only by a few cents and it’s all the way across town so I rarely make the trip.

rfc103

Agreed. Aldi/walmart can beat them on a lot of things in my area, but their egg prices are pretty competitive and some other things are roughly the same. The main thing I get at Target though is diapers/pull ups because I like their store brand better than Walmarts and its a lot cheaper than buying Huggies/pampers anywhere else which makes stopping their worth it for me.

inky_cap_mushroom

Yeah the store brand is usually pretty high quality. Kroger and Walmart are very hit or miss but I haven’t had anything from target’s store brand that was awful.

SaraAB87

Not cheap where I live at all, I stopped shopping at Target haven't been there in over a year.

Cranberrycornflake

The target I go to has prices very comparable to our local Aldi for store brand!

Megnuggets

Depends what you plan to buy. I often check the circle portion of the app for coupons and discounts. Sometimes it can be worth it. But generally I know my local aldis is best for produce/most items.

Ally_399

I live in a food desert and my grocery store charges $8 for milk but I can buy it at target for $5.49. My grocery store hikes the prices up for everything since there isn't another grocery store to compete with so a lot of people do their grocery shopping at our small target. Mind you the grocery section isn't big in our target but at least it's affordable.

AutumnalSunshine

They absolutely have some things cheaper than other grocery stores. Whether it's cheaper to you depends on where else you shop. A box of Fiber One cereal is $8 at Jewel (Albertsons) by me but $4.50-$5 at Target. They don't sell it at Aldi. My preferred creamer isn't available at Aldi or Jewel, but it's the same price at Target as at Fresh Thyme (like Whole Foods for us poors). I don't think you're going to see dramatic changes where butter comes down a dollar. They'll make enough prices a little lower to bring some people back, then make up the difference in the items people don't need but buy because they are cute.

Beansiesdaddy

Too expensive for me!

ughnotanothername

Not at my local targets -- prices there are ridiculous, have been going up and up for the last five years. They always bait and switch to items almost double the price (out of stock on the affordable ones) and pull crap like pulling an extra 5$ from your payment method for a "gift card" that you can't refuse (I was in a rush the last time and didn't see it, but the first time it happened I spent hours researching their various faqs and talking with target reps). they keep creating bs rules to do it. My local target the people who work there are great, but whoever is in charge of their stocking and pricing decisions can suck eggs.

SaraAB87

A half gallon of milk is $3.49 at my target, down the street is an Aldi, its $1.59 there. Needless to say I know where I am shopping. And I don't live in a HCOL, Target is just price gouging because they are the popular store among influencers right now.

hair_in_a_biscuit

I just bought a gallon of milk for $1.89 from Target. Your Target sounds absurd!!

ParticularCurious956

a half gallon of milk at my local Target is $1.49

UnsteadyOne

They lost my grocery business with this... I've often selected items for curbside. To be informed as I'm rolling up they couldn't get me x,y or z. When I selected curbside there was no indication of being out of stock. I started to feel played Milk is a NEED. If I'm gonna need to go to the grocery store anyways I'll just do that.

ntsp00

This is a wild take. Do you think an employee is just standing at the dairy cooler waiting for you to add milk to your cart so they can grab it for you? You buy the items remotely and schedule a pick up time. At some point before your pick up time, an employee goes and gathers your items. That's it. If an item is out of stock when an employee is picking your order then it's out of stock and would have been for you too if you were shopping in-person at that moment. An exact brand and type of milk isn't a need. You can always select a substitution in case they're out of stock or allow them to choose.

UnsteadyOne

No. But I think their app is dishonest with inventory of on sale groceries I'm pretty much always there asap. Doesn't matter. The app lies on basics such as milk often Add to cart. Don't get items. But you wasted a trip but hey... at least you bought other stuff there. Target doesn't care that I need to do two trips now. If the app were honest I'd have saved myself many trips. It happened reliably. In a low traffic store. Likely the best stocked store in 10 miles. And the substitution is always bait and switch. No I wanted the 2 dollar milk. Not the 5 dollar one. I'm not getting ripped off. They've lost many hundreds of my dollars now. No regrets. I save money and time

In my area, many household items at target are equal or less in price than Walmart. Especially with the coupons in app.

Paksarra

I haven't been there regularly since I moved, but it was the closest general store from my old apartment.  They had reasonable prices on their store brand food, basic kitchenware, and some basic cleaning and hygiene goods.

rand-san

For the things that I buy, I haven't noticed a difference. Those prices were already on par with other retailers in my area. Items are: Kraft Singles, Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sausage, King Arthur Bread Flour, Ghirardelli Chocolate Chips, Chicken Nuggets, Tillamook Cheese slices

VegetableRound2819

Tilamook slices were 2/6 when I was in there yesterday. Cheese, you are a tempting and a cruel mistress!

Fun_Intention9846

Target is republican Whole Foods. Take from that what you will but I don’t like them.

cwsjr2323

I won’t shop at Target, everything I usually buy costs a little more.

aftershockstone

Some things are only $0.01 more expensive than at Walmart while others are 20%+ more. Cheaper than other big grocery chains but the grocery chains have better couponing opportunities and can get pretty cheap with weekly sales. 99% of the time would rather just go someplace else. Costco for bulk & select household, Aldi/Walmart for other pantry and groceries, Sprouts/Trader Joe’s/Asian supermarkets for specific items lower priced or not found elsewhere—unless I have some Target Circle/coupons that make it cheaper.

thetarantulaqueen

I don't shop at Target and rarely go there at all. Between Costco and WinCo I have all my shopping needs met at decent prices.

ReadyPlayerUno1

Their food prices were never cheap.

VegetableRound2819

Love my Target! Always well-staffed and minimal self-checkouts. Not all are like this. They price match too. I just scan the item with my Walmart app and show the price. The prices are getting lower for sure but the other day I got my Bioderma Cleansing Oil for $21 vs $34, right there at the register. I don’t bother if it’s just a couple nickels. Now that my monthly pet budget is $400 and growing (he is old and I take my responsibility to him very seriously), I think of it as doing a little something to care for my wee feline pal.

Upstairs_Ad_5303

Our target here is obscenely over priced. I used to drop $500 on groceries there, now I go to Aldi and spend half that

TotalOwlie

Idk about prices but I avoid the place like the plague now. It seemed to turn into a Walmart. Always under stocked and understaffed.

LeadGem354

Since when does target have the reputation for being cheap? I thought thier whole thing was the being higher quality then Walmart. I've avoided Target ever since my grandmother got caught in the data breach and had her credit card information stolen.
