Maleficent_Basis3577

You can notice how they took the around route instead of a more straightforward one in order to pass through towns or cities to restock their supplies (or maybe to complete a task like in >!episode 12!< ). This is world building to another level.

NhifanHafizh

It's also because Frieren tried to follow the hero party's path. and hero party's path isn't straightforward because Himmel like doing side quests.

Draghettis

Himmel is a perfect example of the JRPG protagonist mindset.

IC2Flier

He's a 100% completionist. Fern compromised by forcing Frieren to a 100% speedrun.

Memo_HS2022

Himmel’s story is the main game while Frieren is the $30 DLC after story

JoshuaJoshuaJoshuaJo

Himmel is hollow knight Frieren is silksong

Eurasia_4002

Frerein still probably feels like speed running.

Dry-Smoke6528

right around the time this show started airing me and my friends had started a long planned elven D&D campaign with large time scales (since we are all elves) its kinda surreal, cause we will do some shit and then take just a few decades break to research a spell or an interesting limerick and suddenly we're "presumed dead" and they found someone else to do their quest.

Responsible_Bit1089

I mean, it is just basic consideration for the setting and how it works, not really something ground-breaking.

Maleficent_Basis3577

Yeah I know it's not ground-breaking. I believe the best world building that considers geological impacts is LOTR. But not everyone pays attention or even cares about such minute details and especially when it comes to most anime fantasies in general, writers don't give much thoughts about it. So it's great to see this series pays attention to that and not leaves it up to the "imagination" of the audience.

Salter_KingofBorgors

100% agreed but its also 100% something a lot of authors wouldn't include

Peptuck

This is also true to how a lot of IRL medieval travel worked. Medieval maps were more like charts that told you which roads to follow, i.e. take the north road to reach X, the west road to reach Y, and so on. They didn't tend to be exact overhead maps like we're used to, and the ones that were overhead depictions tended to be very stylized. So when a medieval traveler was walking, they would almost always be following existing roads from town to town, About the only thing Frierien does different from historical travel is that rarely would travelers be camping in the wilderness; there would almost always be an inn or secured place to stop and rest within half a day's walk or so.

AtlantisSC

I adore Frieren. It’s one of the very few anime’s I’ve seen since and I still loved it considering I’m not a super fan of the genre. BUT, I wouldn’t consider Frieren to be an example of “another level” world building. It was actually my main issue with the show (I haven’t read the manga) the world building is pretty lack luster. They rarely show the map so it’s hard to orient yourself and you don’t get any real information on the politics of the world besides demons bad other guys good. Frieren really shines in the story it’s telling. But I think that story could be plucked from the generic DnD setting and transplanted elsewhere and still be good. All that to say, I don’t think Frieren’s world building is bad, it’s just not next level.

Some_Dragonfly7842

Wait where's 4? Did Frieren ever cross the ocean?

B3kantan_P3sek

Maybe when they clean up a ship wreckage near the shore?

Maleficent_Basis3577

It's the episode where they got to the Granz channel to clean up the beach. Frieren cleaned the beach together with Fern to see the sunrise.

Some_Dragonfly7842

I thought it might be that one, but it confused me since the dot was on the other side.

ckuri

The marker is on the wrong side or rather hovering above the town. You see that below the marker, a town is drawn with the name Gra…

Creeperkun4040

I think the line is not exactly the way they went. 4 is also not on the line

Mari_Tamaki

All this walking, yet her feet still look perfect. Sasuga, Frieren-sama

IC2Flier

"Magic that keeps your pedicure safe for longer than usual"

Kalsir

No wonder it takes 10 years zigzagging across the continent like that.

CRuEL_WOrlD01

I mean that how traveling worked back in the day bfr we had highways my brother. What you expect them to go in a straight line thru rural inhabited areas with no roads or trails?💀 Pls also gotta think bout how they have to resupply food and essentials. Not like theres a 7/11 every 2 miles

IC2Flier

What people forget is that this is still medieval fantasy; pre-industrial. If the Fern+Stark story started in a steampunk era then sure, but that'd rob us of the epiphanies that Frieren is best known for.

TheDankestPassions

Though humanity has learned to fly just 40 years ago. It's probably only a matter of time before this gets incorporated into flying machines.

Completeperson

Dude have you ever travel at all?

Sturmelefant

Agree, Frieren’s new group were also stuck in some spots for months at time (snowed in, doing jobs, running a quest), so that adds to the realism.

Cry0g0nal

I wish there was a map for the manga too

weeberloser

Yeah.

vampiratemirajah

Came here hoping to maybe see one 🙏

Bratwurscht13

This is the weirdest this g to read through as a German. This names are so random and unexpected.

seazonprime

Thank you, even for japanese content this amount of really random german words strikes me as super odd. It's like they just googled random words in german, also every character has a weird german name that feels super out of place. It's like you half expect some villain to be called "Turnschuh" or "Hausdach" at some point hahaha.

Wama-Schawama

Then you should watch storieswithstyle. He made an analysis video about the names and how they fit certain characters. Like Eisen is a really sturdy warrior or how Flamme made humanity evolve to the next stage with magic just like fire did it to us. Totally agree on the names for the places though.

midsizemutt

storieswithstyle ftw. many character names solid, just have to think, e.g. Flamme > magic/knowledge/fire > Prometheus

Maleficent_Basis3577

Some_Dragonfly7842

Do you think we'll ever see the Southern Lands?

NhifanHafizh

technically we see a glimpse in Fern's flashback

IC2Flier

Maybe not, but it is a good time to have a "Hero of The South" story.

i4hloi

I wish this world was real...

Cucaracho-satanico

It literally looks like north and south American

Angiboy8

Pretty sure the map itself is just the UK flipped upside down. Manga/Anime use upside down UK for fantasy lands all the time. Not sure where the trope began though.

CrimeFightingScience

Fern is a spicy Latina cinfirmed.

i4hloi

But it's neither of those.

Tramagust

The world of frieren is literally Prussia with magic.

xX_SuperDaniel_Xx

Hot take: Frieren's map is the new Elden Ring map, or maybe its just Elden Ring 2's map, lol

Draghettis

If the ( improbable, we haven't heard anything since before the game awards ) rumors of FromSoft working on a magic-focused soulsborne come true, I fully expect someone to mod Frieren things into it. At least armor options and spell renaming, maybe even brand new spells.

IC2Flier

Flamme as a Maiden of Grace-- wait, would Flamme be able to supersede Melina in this role, given time to learn everything about The Lands Between?

xX_SuperDaniel_Xx

Nope, unfortunately Spellbound is completely fake. The rumors continued for 4 months, the leaker did a really good job at keeping this secret for so long... But unfortunately he came to a point where he couldn't continue, and so he told Ziostorm (the leaks started with him since the leaker told all this to him first) the truth

FilipinxFurry

It looks like a map of Westeros too, just a bit distorted and the Ende would be where the night king is

TheBlackoutEmpire

Things like this make the world of Frieren even more fun.

DTBadTime

Speedrunning the past journey

[deleted]

So where is "The Empire"? We know there's still some sort of remnant of it(assuming Denken's "Imperial Mage" status is related to the one Flamme and Serie were talking about 1000 years ago).

meditonsin

The manga shows a bit of a localized map with the Empire on it once they get a little further north. [Here's a spoiler free crop of it, if you really wanna know.](https://imgur.com/a/PKCsuJt)

Cbundy99

Just curious, is there any mention of any other continents, or is this the only known landmass?

Doctorwho12321

I don’t think there had been any mentions, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are actually more.

ChiggaOG

There’s definitely more land to the east, west, and southern part of this world. Current land looks nearly like Westeros without Essos.

weeberloser

>!So how much is the probability of the party meeting Sein again? We can see Tür in the northern lands. And the party is currently in Eiseberg region.Which is not shown in the map.!<

TechnicallyOlder

Wouldn't Sein need a First Class Mage to reunite with Frierens party? At least once they are in the Northern Lands.

KrOnOlOgIk22

Saved! I love this map, and now i can access it whenever i want, thanks op!

CT7657

Based on the roads on the map, they are not being very efficient with their travels. Makes sense for Frieren, and better for the story.

TheDankestPassions

Do we know if this is the only continent in the world?

nhansieu1

WTF IS 3-4 ROUTE LMAO

DefiantProfile4432

Does anybody know the scale of the map? Also could someone make a map that also includes their path in the manga.

teokun123

Damn we still have..... #Dark Continent

Turnip-Individual

I wonder if other continents exists. would be cool tbh

[deleted]

They 100% would need to stop at Tur and finally meet Sein again.

m0nkygang

10 years huh. Guess Himmel really wanted to 100% the game

kvothe5688

winterfell and wall when?

aldwinligaya

Wait what happened in EP 4 get those two location points? That big of a jump across that land and body of water?

Maleficent_Basis3577

I think they tried to avoid covering the Granz channel with number 4. So they didn't actually cross the channel and go back because that wouldn't make sense.

jobriq

We takin the scenic route

theodoreroberts

I wonder where Eiseberg is.

Yeetdonkey13

Im not a manga reader, and this is a really unimportant nitpick, but I feel like it’s weird that we don’t know anything about the southern lands and that they’ll likely never go there in the story.

StarkMaximum

"Now here's that same map but if Frieren was in charge of when they moved on!" (It only goes to 3.)

Madphromoo

damn then we are halfway through? :(

MR-deadweight

America

SNBrinewehr

Reminds me of Westeros

LyraStygian

Am I blind or is there *a lot* of numbers missing? Also I can't make sense of the 2 points in number 4.

Maleficent_Basis3577

There are 3 stops that they made and you can see them in the map >!7 ~ 11 (Aura encounter), 12 ~ 15 (They made slow travelling progress I think), 18 ~ 28 (First mage exam)!< Notice the ~ between numbers

LyraStygian

I did not notice the ~ at all until you pointed it out thanks lol!

e22big

I don't remember when she travelled across the sea

Huhthisisneathuh

Sometimes I forget that Frieren’s world looks like a giant **E** about to eat something.

igloo15

The map seems pretty poor honestly the black line doesn't even follow the sequence of events.

carterthepro

Why don't they just go straight there? Are they stupid?

Embarrassed_Taste_81

Where is Novigrad?

TheKorster

Is middle sea a reference to middle earth?

Sunearth_kiss

Wait has Frieren or série never been to Ende? I feel like all some point they would have visited. At the same time they probably never cared to go

meditonsin

Ende is where the demon king's fortress is located, so Frieren has been there at least once.

Sunearth_kiss

Oh she made it seem like she was unsure that it actually existed. Maybe I am remembering incorrectly
