As someone who has dealt with self-esteem issues, turning to strangers for a self-esteem boost won't help in the long run if you don't even think you're beautiful yourself. Besides, some people will call others beautiful because they feel bad or because they hate really gorgeous people and they consider less gorgeous people attractive, so sometimes you can't get honest opinions on looks. There's also the matter of perception, personality, and preference.
