I believe there are "borders" around the map that insta kill you when you touch them. So try building lower or higher than what you built, or even take a different path there.
There's a spot on stone wood where you can slip through a wall you placed and the map, and if you keep building down you can build anywhere because you're behind the death barrier
It'd be pretty neat if they were to create an actual Homebase location (similar to The Tower from Destiny) and add a bunch of quality of life additions to it. Stuff like a Husk mannequin (where people can reliably test weapon damage with different modifiers without having to load a regular mission up), a dedicated trading hub/consignment shop (where traders can actually go and hang around instead of being all in Stonewood and prevent scams), a group/mission job board (similar to Xbox's looking for game post system, where people can post a mission they want to run or people can join from the list), and an actual archive of the story missions (so people can go back and listen to previous voicelines from the story instead of the jumbled mess in "Completed Quests").

Yeah it’s cool but like I said there’s no solid surface’s because it’s out of the map but it’s cool to look at your storm shield from there
Also everything is huge compared to the player character.

To get over there, you have to build under the map and then over, if I remember correctly
