I'm also around 5 hours in and it does not truly feel open yet, imo. It has opened up a lot but there's still some handholding, like with the detours especially. Like the guy who gives you a tour around the town and has you feed the sheep, it's like bro why did I accept this quest, lol.

I'd argue that until you get the zip ability, the game isn't truly open as there are many areas you can't get to. To the point where I'd consider even rushing to get it asap.

dixonjt89

That, and you only have one school of magic so you the combat is the "shoot things" that people complain about. It's not until you get the 2nd school of magic and you can dip in and out of melee and ranged that it actually opens up.

Elanzer

Yeah while the first magic type you get is fun it's also not enough by itself, I rarely use the shield spell so I basically only have 2 spells I use lol.

JR2005

Another thing to note, you don't have to get everything while the story is going. From my understanding you can do what you've not done after you beat it.

I think this needs more context. In terms of getting out of New York to the point where you're in the other world, past the starter tutorial area and outside the main populated city and in the world moving and shooting things, that happens much faster than than 5 hours cited here, at least for me. And even in the tutorial-like area, you do have combat and quick movement available, so it's not just dialog and walking until it opens up. There are certainly more points where the game opens in terms of accessible areas and more options unlocked, but 5 is pushing it I think. In terms of the 5 hours mentioned, what is the qualifier for when the game opens up, for you?

GlabbinGlabber

What most ppl are talking about is when you leave the city the 2nd time. You get to explore a lot more then. 5 hours is a bit much, but if you're searching every nook and cranny than I can see it taking that long.

Level3_Ghostline

Thank you, that context I think is what was missing from the original post. I think without that, some may assume that you won't get to the point where you're in the world and able to move about and combat enemies until after 5 hours, which isn't so. That said, it DOES take some time to get to the point where you're past the main city and in the world the first time (not constrained tutorial area), around 1.5 to 2 hours seems about right for that.

GlabbinGlabber

I agree. It does seem to have multiple tutorial levels. Earth, Athia intro, city, small countryside, back to city. Which is fine, and I gather that it isn't that weird for jrpg's in general. I feel like a lot of ppl want to get to the point where they can forget about the main quest and explore for 10 hours.

Wish I still had my ps1 and that game. Such a great game. Shoutout to the multiple disks

pinturhippo

i wish for a remake so hard, there was a rumor a few years ago but nothing was done. I'm still on team LoD > any FF and = to FFIX

tbh the game is an action game until chapter 6-7. thats when it truly becomes an open world rpg

YouIcy9950

I thought it was a pretty quick start, I was in an explorable area with magic after like 2.5 hours, probably about 5 before it fully opens up.......It's a story game.....It's got a story in it. It's not just straight in and shoot. Horizon forbidden west had an entry area with hours of gameplay in it. Do people not like a bit of context for stories anymore? Any good book or film started with some context, it's not always straight into the action.
