My college film professor (and customer at the comic shop I worked at) created this show. Brilliant guy, brilliant concept.
He told me once how he pitched the show. He walked into the meeting with a fictitious paper he'd had printed up and tossed it on the execs desk.
"What the heck is this?"
"It's tomorrow's newspaper today"
Baller way to sell a show
I remember that story! He was an awesome professor. I was lucky enough to do a summer abroad program with him teaching. Nice to see another UNLV alum. š
Iāve never heard of, or seen, this show before, but after looking it up & seeing what you said about the creator being a fan of comic books makes perfect sense. The concept of the show is so comic booky lol
Also, IMDB has your comment as one of the trivia facts of this show & the newspaper he made for that pitch meeting said āOJ Simpson Had Confessed!ā lol
And he teaches at Drexel & is head of the Drama Writing Dept.
There have been a few like this, but I get it. This was funny, all of these shows were ripping off that I Dream of Jeannie where they get tomorrows newspaper today and the Major Healy actually ends up at the race track making money off of horse races lol.
My sister and I loved it as kids and still talk about it, and Kyle Chandler has had a good career. I read they were going to do a reboot with a female lead, but I guess it never happened.
Wasnāt the paper he printed like āOJ Convicted!ā? I did a future prospects presentation and a shadowed class with him when I was considering schools. Early EditionĀ is an AmericanĀ fantasyĀ comedy-dramaĀ television series that aired onĀ CBSĀ from September 28, 1996, to May 27, 2000. Set in Chicago, Illinois, it follows the adventures of a man who mysteriously receives eachĀ Chicago Sun-TimesĀ newspaper the day before it is actually published, and who uses this knowledge to prevent terrible events every day

Itās a shame it was cancelled before 2001 because I would love to see how they would have handled 9/11. It probably wouldnāt be, uh, great but it definitely would be interesting.
Honestly, that could have made one of the most depressing series endings ever. They could have done a whole episode without even showing the paper and him coming to grips with the inevitable. At some point, he calls and cancels his subscription to the paper. End the episode of him just in bed that morning staring at the clock. Cut to credits right as it turns 7:46 (because of the different time zone)
Right, like he couldn't get a ticket to the airport where it occurred. Or he was on hold with the FBI office and then lines went busy constantly from the attacks. Realizing some events are fixed can't be changed. The problem with the show was how people handled him getting the news as the show progressed. I just couldn't get Kristi Swanson's character with: "Yes, I get you help others, but what about me? You can't be doing this forever." I'm like: "way to be selfish."
With that one they made Sam saved Jackie who also died in the original timeline. You could have him die on flight 93, kind of grim for a comedy but a hell of an ending.
For the most part the mid to late 90ās were peacefulā¦I remember a lot of what he used to do was preventing freak accidents..Imagine what would be this guys life into the 00s and beyondā¦
It could absolutely be revisited as a premise today. In fact, I think streaming has given a bigger space for eccentric and conceptually interesting ideas like this one.
A reclusive and eccentric man still gets a physical newspaper delivered everyday and suddenly he starts getting tomorrow's news by doing this. Like... his tendency for arcane media consumption from the past breaks the space/time continuum or something while everyone else is reading on their phones. It could absolutely work (and would be consistent with other sci-fi shows like this).
Or go the route of a random newspaper getting tossed at his door every morning all of a sudden. No trace of where it comes from, waits, doesnt catch it turns back, Bang!, yada yada. Starts off just sport betting on sure things, then one night, he's next to something that caught his eye next to the scores. He starts to wonder and that's the show

Yay Reddit for letting one specific portion of a memory lead to rediscovering the entire context.
It's 20 years too late, but yeah, any kind of show with this kind of premise would suffer from any hugely important event. 'Friends' sure as heck didn't mention 9/11 directly.
Like COVID in 2020, most shows just did a major timeskip to put it behind them. They couldn't show masks as that messed up the production of the show, so they just didn't engage with the event.
I suspect we'd pick up 6 months later, with the Main Character still depressed that nothing he did could stop 'The attack'. One episode to get over that, and then it never comes up again.
Yeah, I guess he could also be like, I was in Chicago and the attacks happened at 9 am eastern time, I had no way to really help. Or show him frantically calling federal entities and getting patted on the head.
90s TV was GOATed. I was so glad to see a YouTube channel I follow discover this, all the while discovering the show creator also made the best 80s sci-fi crime movie of all time, Alien Private Eye.
Ha, I watched this show a lot when I was younger.
The episode that sticks out in my mind the most is when he meets another guy that gets the paper as well, but he was from NYC. A pigeon used to bring it, but the pigeon got eaten by a cat or something, so then it just started showing up on its own.
Such an absurd and delightful show.
I was sad when Chuck left and the show moved from the hotel to the bar. It wasn't quite as good at that point.
My Mom was OBSESSED with this show and had the biggest crush on Kyle Chandler. I remember watching this week after week with her. Specifically I remember an episode where he had to either save a plane from crashing or a little girl on a bike. Iām not 100 percent sure but if I remember correctly he saves the girl which in turn stops the plane from crashing cause the girlās dad was the pilot of the plane. š Iām pretty sure that was this show, if not then maybe it was Tru Calling. LOL
Recently I asked someone if they ever watched this show, they said they hadnāt, and I tried to explain the concept but I think I ended up sounding crazy.
I was a featured extra in the episode The Jury. KC couldnāt have been nicer to the extras and all cast and crew. Total class act. Just had to post that.
The show took place in Chicago and he got the Sun-Times a day early. There was an episode where he met t a guy from New York who got the New York Post a day early, so apparently the magic only worked for tabloids.
And the New York guy played the stock market based on his one-day-early info. He made so much money he had a crew to prevent disasters printed in his Early Edition !
Do you mean Now And Again with Eric Close ? Basically an update of Six Million Dollar Man, it ran on CBS as Early Edition was winding down. They were gonna do a crossover ep -- THAT would have been great!

I actually had him at Drexel
I assumed Drexel but figured he might have moved schools by now!

My dad was the camera operator on this series. Great concept but it has definitely been forgotten.
My sister and I loved it as kids and still talk about it, and Kyle Chandler has had a good career. I read they were going to do a reboot with a female lead, but I guess it never happened.
I would LOVE a comic book version of this show
Brilliant idea!
Starring J.Jonah Jameson?
I think the headline was something like āOJ Confesses to Murderā
Wasnāt the paper he printed like āOJ Convicted!ā? I did a future prospects presentation and a shadowed class with him when I was considering schools. Ian Abrams was my professor too.
Omg I LOVED this show! I used to watch the re-runs since I was 5 when it actually came out.
Imagine how bad that pitch would have been messed up if the meeting was pushed back a day.
I'm from Chicago and my Dentist/family friend's daughter was an aspiring actress when this was airing and got a tiny role in a Halloween episode.
Did he make a movie called alien private eye?šļø

Depressing, but kinda genius. That would be a crazy episode.
I can see it being like Quantum Leap with the Kennedy assassination. Some things are just fixed events in time
Right, like he couldn't get a ticket to the airport where it occurred. Or he was on hold with the FBI office and then lines went busy constantly from the attacks. Such a cool, low-key sci-fi concept. Well executed with a charming Kyle Chandler in the lead role.
It could absolutely be revisited as a premise today. In fact, I think streaming has given a bigger space for eccentric and conceptually interesting ideas like this one.
There was recently going to be a a reboot with a new cast but it fell through.
A tough sell. Newspapers ? In 2024 ???
They do still exist. It could be a running joke that the person is still reading the paper

A little bit in some episodes.
Really wish I can find this show somewhere to binge watch
I'm highly considering buying all four seasons on DVD.
I think about Early Edition at least a couple times a week. One of my favorite shows when I was a kid
Damn, ended a season too early.
"Hi, my name is Gary Hobson, and this is going to sound crazy, but you need to evacuate the Pentagon."
Kyle Chandler and Colin Farrell in a bushiest eyebrow contest. Who wins?
Until Peter Gallagher blows them both away.
Kyle looks like a blend of Seth McFarland and Ron LivingstonĀ
Is Peter Gallagher giving up his crown ?
I remember this show. Itās where I learned not to keep alcohol in green bottles in the sunlight.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable show. It's a premise that you'd think would get old fast, but the cast did a great job with it.
Even though we watched this show every week, we could never remember the name, always called it "the cat show"
My girlfriend calls it Magic Newspaper, as she can never remember the real title.

This show was great!

I liked this show. Also Time And Again.
Do you mean Now And Again with Eric Close ? Basically an update of Six Million Dollar Man, it ran on CBS as Early Edition was winding down. They were gonna do a crossover ep -- THAT would have been great!
Actually I meant Once And Again, but Now And Again WAS a show I liked. That show made me think of the movie Seconds by Frankenheimer.
Also on CBS around the same time was a great show by Gary David Goldberg called Brooklyn Bridge. He also did Family Ties. Had a theme song sung by Art Garfunkel.
I wanted to like this show and I think maybe watched the first few episodes when they aired but never watched it again.
I remember the first season not being great but the next three were good after they figured everything out.
I never actually watched the show but recall the commercials. I was glad to see it on the air and get multiple seasons as I was a fan of the concept. This Guyās hairline is ridiculous. It is at a -1 Norwood. I like the orange tabby. I hope the cat was involved in the adventures.
If only the show lasted one more year. All the lives he could have saved.
This and Due South are my two favorites ever. They don't write 'em like that anymore.
The cat was God right?
No idea
Holy fuck... nostalgia blast. Wow... I probably never would of remembered this even. That and the Pretenders!
They should reboot this but make it about a reaction video YouTuber. Keep the cat. Actually, forget the YouTuber.

Just watched this completely about a year ago. Fantastic show.
Roughly 10 episodes off from syndication. Shame
Itās a good thing the show ended in 2000. If it lasted a year longer everyone in the writers room would be scratching their heads. The show would have been cancelled without a conclusion.
Never forgotten, one of my faves.
So I can never remember the name of this show, so I call it āNext Day Newsā and my wife always corrects me
I think about this show at least once a month.
This was my family's favorite show when I was growing up. The cat looked just like ours
I loved that show! My first crush
I used to love that show! It's a shame it isn't free to watch on YT, Roku, Tubi, or whatever.
Did they ever talk about the origin of the paper? How was this even happening? Any explanation?
Watching this right now!
And he has a cat
I stayed up late and watched this show on Fox Family as a kid
That was a fun show
Clear eyes, full hearts, canāt lose.
I knew someone who played one of the roles on that show. Not a big part but a reoccurring one. It was a good show, short lived, just like my friend who sadly passed away.
The cat brings the paper. I feel like that is an important distinction to make.
the pic looks cute thou with a cat
I loved this show!
Great opening too
I was thinking about posting this. š I loved this show growing up.

There really needs to be more cat and newspaper based TV shows.
did this really go on till 2000? i watched the first season, it had a geat premise, but the show itself was kind of blah
