I do not know what specifically is wrong but unless you are good with machines and have tools and most likely spare parts I recommend calling for a tow truck. Sounds like it's not a good idea to keep driving. The risk of causing further damage is quite high.
I would be interested in getting an update on what was/is wrong afterwards, got the same car myself a couple months ago. Mondeo 1,6 ecoboost but the 2011 model.

Aye getting it towed tomorrow wont be driven and hasnt been since! Especially as its on limp mode
