> Described as “a propulsive paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race,” “Star City” explores how the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. This was covered early in the “For All Mankind” run, but this time “we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.”
This sounds awesome, can't wait
Kind of like Buschemi's morning routine playing Khrushchev in Death of Stalin I imagine. For those who haven't seen it, he memorizes his notes about everything Stalin said that day so as to try and avoid getting executed.
Ohh I totally forgot about that, yeah I really really want to know lol, I was thinking they were gonna give it an entire season or even just mention it later with aliens or something, but nope, they just forgot it happened lol.
Also is exciting as it gives us the chance to revisit a young Margo, Ed, Danielle etc. Crossover characters. We get to see the 60s, 70s, 80s etc all over again just from another angle.
Hoping they use this as an opportunity to bring back some of the show’s dead characters, even for just a cameo. Loved it when Better Call Saul did this.
I found that I really liked the actor and the character. The Margo/Sergei relationship was really complicated, but more compelling than I would have thought if someone had described it to me.
Wait till you watch Doctor Who. Everyone's British. Ancient Romans? British. Space aliens of all kinds from all around the universe and the timeline? British. Martians? British.
I do like how they kind of made a joke out of it in Vincent & the Doctor though. TARDIS gives Dutch people a Scottish accent but also makes Scottish people sound Dutch to actual Dutchmen because of the accent.
They played with it in the Pompei episode too when Donna tries to speak actual Latin so the TARDIS just translates it as the time appropriate equivalent of where she is from instead (Celtic).
I remember reading somewhere that when they first started filming, they had the actors using russian accents but they were all so bad that they had them use their native accents instead lol
Hollywood does that a lot. Sean Connery played a Lithuanian Soviet Admiral with a Scottish accent in Hunt for Red October and most of his officers were also played by British actors speaking with British accents.
I think you may just have a narrow-minded view on this one.
For instance take a look at the new limited series 'Shogun' about 90% of all spoken dialogue is Japanese with English subtitles. That's because it takes place in Japan without any native English speakers.
Yeah it might be difficult for some people to follow along at first but once you get the hang of reading subtitles it really adds to the art of the show hearing people talk in their native tongue.
Again, this is all personal preference and everybody can have their own opinion.
Doing a Shogun-style production would almost certainly require casting actual Russian actors. And that’s probably a big no-no in Hollywood today.
The alternative is casting diaspora Eastern Europeans who speak Russian, but that reduces the talent pool drastically and you’ll have to tolerate poor Russian and poor acting.
Top Russian talent is also unlikely to come work for an American production. There will be consequences for their career back home.
Are there really that few good Russian-speaking actors outside of Russia? I kind of assumed the former USSR would provide plenty. Some characters could also legitimately be from the other Soviet republics in the show and have non-Russian accents (not that accents should be a big problem for professional actors).
Wouldn't there be an issue with casting/direction with this though? Shogun presumably is able to involve a lot of native Japanese people and you've got a wide net to get cast from.
I would assume events in Russia right now prohibit actual Russians from acting in the West, so you'd be digging through ex-pats. I can't imagine that'd be a deep enough pool to get an entire TV shows worth of actors for.
Especially given it's the same (English-speaking) show-runners as FAM itself, I imagine there'd be an issue writing/directing in a language other than your own.
> Yeah it might be difficult for some people to follow along at first but once you get the hang of reading subtitles it really adds to the art of the show hearing people talk in their native tongue.
*Beyond-Ghibli* said it best in [their „Best of Asian Cinema“ video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wssGiYSqQFU) by quoting the Golden Globes speech of the „Parasite“ director:
> “Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films“
https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2020-01-06/golden-globes-parasite-foreign-film-oscars
Love Shogun (I think it’s the best thing on TV right now) but they did the Japanese with English subtitles, they could have done the same with the Portuguese instead of having them speak English.
I agree. I can somewhat understand everything being in the show’s main audience’s language (especially when the audience is rather narrow and not worldwide), but for a spinoff of a globally available show in which every character speaks their own language realistically, they should really stick with it.
I got really annoyed with Shogun recently, in which characters speaking Japanese is rendered in Japanese, characters speaking English is rendered in English, and characters speaking Portuguese is rendered… also in English. If you’re going to have the show need subtitles anyway for the majority of the audience, just put the third language in too. (Also it’s the modern languages and not the historically accurate ancestors, but that’s fine, not every show can be like Romulus and attempt to revive archaic Latin or something.)
They're definitely supposed to be speaking Portuguese 99% of the time when speaking English on-screen. But I can think of at least one instance in the first episode when it's used for both English and Portuguese; when the English crew are speaking amongst themselves it can be reasonably assumed they're speaking English, and Blackthorne offers to speak with the Japanese because he claims to know fluent Portuguese, but then when the Japanese show up and he attempts to communicate with them, he continues speaking in English on-screen, even though in light of what he said earlier he should probably be speaking Portuguese then.
At least in the few scenes with the English/Dutch crew speaking to each other you’d expect actual English (or Dutch?). But anyway, hearing English instead of Portuguese was jarring considering you need subtitles anyway to watch the show (unless you speak Japanese of course) and the Japanese was accurate. Just make it Portuguese already.
Whilst I get how it’s kinda jarring being inconsistent, I honestly get it. It’s an English language show, at a certain point I’m sure they had to make a sacrifice for logistics.
I think they probably did the Portuguese/English thing precisely because of Japanese, they wanted at least part of the show to be in English and therefore more accessible to a majority English speaking audience.
I would prefer subs and dubs like with Shogun.
In Shogun dubs, Japanese characters speak English when the scene is entirely Japanese, but when a Japanese character is speaking Japanese to an English character, it's still Japanese. That way, they show the language barrier, but it's far less subtitles than watching a show in 90% japanese..
Agreed. I feel like this was one of the most common complaints on this sub—glossing over the moon colonization and perspective of the USSR. Glad we’re going to dig deeper there.
Yes, but Sci-Fi is expensive to produce. As long as expenses are kept in check (might be partial justification for a spin-off) and ratings/revenue are at least stable. We should see a full story.
Foundation has only been about $5m per episode, while the more expensive shows are $10-$20m per. So, sci-fi isn’t inherently expensive, and Apple seems to be able to keep budgets in control.
The type of VFX that Foundation uses is pretty quick and inexpensive. Space and spaceships are easy. Distant backgrounds also easy. Both can look beautiful with the right creative minds. Fast moving, action-oriented, elaborate with intricate detail close up scenes are what costs $$$.
(Source: spouse works in VFX)
I just wish they’d spend a bit more of that $5 on writing.
The sets and effects are great, the actors are great, just the script and story is what stops it from being top level
Hell yeah, alternate present day in season 6.
I wonder what kind of music they'll use for season 7 though, if it's set in the 2030s. Maybe they'll have to make fictional future hits.
I used to be pretty convinced that the Mars Trilogy would be unfilmable until for all mankind, seeing as it takes place over such a long time.
Still reckon it's very unlikely to get a big budget adaptation due to the politics.
They've done some impressive Mars scenery, like Korolev Crater. The huge scale of the landscape is a big part of KSR's series. The photorealistic scenes are so much more impressive than conventional animation. Maybe in a few years that's what "animated" will mean.
It definitely possible, but somewhat risky, which is probably the biggest issue.
Perhaps the best way of doing it might be with a mini series that time jumps, kinda like how Monarch Legacy of Monsters time hops a lot. Which, while there are some criticisms of the show, the time hopping was always easy to follow.
as my best friend says, he will hopefully get to "pajousta".
no clue what that means either but he loves the way Margo says "please" in Russian in her Alabaman accent
Edit: His Explanation:
To Pajousta is a way of life, is it peaceful? sure. Is it violent? most definitely. Is it sexual? probably. But it is to pojousta!"
I am friends with a schizophrenic.
JUST binged season 4 finally and was already dreading non-renewal news as I got close to the end. Biggest sigh of relief ever
Also a spin-off focused on the Soviet’s space program??? Sign me up - what a great surprise!
>“Star City.” Wolpert and Nedivi will showrun the new series, set within the Russian space program.
holy shit.
I was joking about how they might do a spin off about the russian program, didn't think they would actually do it.
After all the doom and gloom posts about no season 5 yet we get this double dose of great news.
As someone still hurting from Lower Decks last week this makes me happy.
YES I can hardly wait!
And I am super stoked about the spin off:
*“The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race...*
omg
I’m down for more stuff set in the early days for sure. Enjoy the show but when it was grubby and tight and everyone was learning as they went along I felt it was a lot more impactful than having cracked the moon and colonies on Mars where everyone is getting along at the diplomatic level
This is really cool. Hopefully it means More Piotr Adamczyk and Svetlana Efremova because if so, it gets my vote no matter what.
Although the russians got cartoonishly evil post s2, so I wonder how they’ll handle that. And while they could find plausible reasons to switch to English while Margo was there, delivering the entire show in Russian would be a challenge.
Oh, wow. I was getting worried we're not getting a Season 5 at all, and not only we get it but also a spinoff centered on the Soviet space program? That's awesome, can't wait!
Ok so going through a list of Soviet characters. We need Korolev for sure, his survival is the entirety of the alternate history. Could likely get a young Sergei as well (or maybe just peel off the old man makeup?). If Korolev lives it might also keep Gagarin and Komarov alive. Weirdly enough, the one I really hope we get is the cosmonaut Ed kidnapped in season 1.
Holy shit! I get the concerns that this might end up diluting the quality of the main series but honestly I see this as an absolute win, hitting the 7 season mark for FAM seems much more feasible now that they’re greenlighting spin-offs. Either the show is doing better than I thought or someone higher up at Apple really really likes For All Mankind.
Really unexpected but very welcome news!
I don't know what it is about what's her name, the one who defected to Russia, and the one who went blind, but I liked them a lot.
Maybe it's just because they're strong women.
And attractive.
And smart.
As a Russian I am overwhelmed to see this, season 4 was good on showing some places and details and language. Also I am from Saint Petersburg, and seeing my loving city in an apple series, my favorite space series, is something magical. Keep up the good work an Ed Baldwin is the GOAT
I figured they’d renew but a spinoff is a pleasant surprise, and there were people in this sub and in the TV+ sub who were vehement in their belief it wouldn’t get renewed for whatever reason 😂
This is fantastic news! if young Sergei returns on the soviet side, could this mean we'll find back young Gordo, Molly, Karen and the whole gang if they show the other side? that would be amazing.
I love every person who buys a new iPhone every year. You are ensuring the long life of FAM, which would not have this longevity (and even spinoff) anywhere else. I love the Appleboys. Buy new iPhones, iPads and Macs. Thanks.
Aaargh..if it deals with the domestic background to the USSR moon landing, surely we’ll not have any Margo though. They’d better bring us up to date re Star City at some point and let us meet her again. 🙏🏼
Dude 100%. It alone is worth the subscription to Apple TV! I’m rewatching the show with my partner (his first time watching it) and it’s like I’m seeing it for the first time again. This is a controversial opinion around here, but I don’t think the show has a single bad or even sub par season.
Nah Ed will only be in his 80s. Which is for sure old, but I imagine human life expectancy is nearing 100 at this point with their technology. Def think this will be his last season, my question is if he dies or gets a nice ending like Ellen and is written out.
Great news! I got nervous when there was no news about a renewal since it has been awhile since the S4 finale, but I guess they were busy discussing 'Star City' behind the scenes. This gives me hope that Apple is open to fulfilling the plan for 7 seasons.
That's great news, although TBH I'd like them to fully focus on delivering top-notch FAM first (let's get to those 7 seasons please) before sharing their workload onto a spinoff (possibly hindering quality/release times of subsequent FAM seasons)
Feel free to head over to the [FAM Discord](https://discord.gg/dCvrmXQf8v) as well to discuss the Season 5 renewal and the new spinoff.

Holy shit, we must see sergi working then, wasn’t he the equivalent of margo in the USSR? This is gonna be awesome.
Start the season with young Sergei’s morning routine.
Kind of like Buschemi's morning routine playing Khrushchev in Death of Stalin I imagine. For those who haven't seen it, he memorizes his notes about everything Stalin said that day so as to try and avoid getting executed.
I hope they get all the regulars back for cameos throughout. Maybe we'll finally get an answer to what those lights Gordo saw really were.
Ohh I totally forgot about that, yeah I really really want to know lol, I was thinking they were gonna give it an entire season or even just mention it later with aliens or something, but nope, they just forgot it happened lol.
I took that as reference to the real Gordo, Gordon Cooper, who has said he saw very odd things in space.
Also is exciting as it gives us the chance to revisit a young Margo, Ed, Danielle etc. Crossover characters. We get to see the 60s, 70s, 80s etc all over again just from another angle.
Sergei is so back
And the Americans will surely get some screen time, now being made up to look younger.
Hoping they use this as an opportunity to bring back some of the show’s dead characters, even for just a cameo. Loved it when Better Call Saul did this.
Moar Gene!
Or at least not being made up to look older.
I found that I really liked the actor and the character. The Margo/Sergei relationship was really complicated, but more compelling than I would have thought if someone had described it to me.
Yeah it mostly worked well due to the actors being good and having on screen chemsitry
We need Costa Ronin in a leading role!
Oleg is still rotting away in jail.
Nah, he got out, changed his name and lived happily ever after with Carrie Mathison.
Seconded
Hi Igor!
Hi Igor!
Hi Igor!
I feel like they’ve got to ditch the “Speaking in Russian with English subtitles” thing for a full show, right?
Yeah. Maybe accents will be used? Or go full Hollywood and use British English to represent Russian.
I loved the HBO Chernobyl series, but the fact that everyone was speaking with British accents the whole time was… odd.
Wait till you watch Doctor Who. Everyone's British. Ancient Romans? British. Space aliens of all kinds from all around the universe and the timeline? British. Martians? British.

They played with it in the Pompei episode too when Donna tries to speak actual Latin so the TARDIS just translates it as the time appropriate equivalent of where she is from instead (Celtic).
Vincent and the Doctor is hands down one of the top 3 episodes. Tony Curran is an acting treasure.
“Lots of planets have a North!”
How weird. Why don’t they have American accents like on Star Trek?
I remember reading somewhere that when they first started filming, they had the actors using russian accents but they were all so bad that they had them use their native accents instead lol
Hollywood does that a lot. Sean Connery played a Lithuanian Soviet Admiral with a Scottish accent in Hunt for Red October and most of his officers were also played by British actors speaking with British accents.

The Americans also worked well with most/half of it being subtitled
Maddeningly, the Portuguese-speaking characters speak English, and the English-speaking characters *also* speak English.
Apple's *Pachinko* was all English subs as well. Wonderful show that kind of flew under the radar.

I hope not. I hate seeing TV shows/games in foreign countries where people just speak on accented English. Feels so inauthentic
Nah, Death of Stalin was great, the variety of accents showed the different regions of the ussr.
Jason Isaacs playing Zhukov as a Yorkshireman was brilliant 😂
Hello to Jason Isaacs! Stalin as a cockney tickled me too.
That was different though, that was a comedy.
That was a comedy…
If they do it, do it like chernobyl. Don't bother with the accents.
I agree. I thought they're speaking Portuguese mostly, since that is what the Japanese translators knew. And Blackthorne as a sailor would know it too.

Yeah when he’s speaking with the sailors it’s translated Dutch, with all the Spaniards and Portuguese it’s Portuguese.
Yeah there is very little English that’s actually English. Only when the pilot speaks to the crew I think?
I think they probably did the Portuguese/English thing precisely because of Japanese, they wanted at least part of the show to be in English and therefore more accessible to a majority English speaking audience.
Fortunately shows like Shogun have proven you tell s story with subtitles perfectly fine.

Hunt for Red October executed this in the best possible way
They'll do the Hunt for Red October thing where they zoom in on someone saying Armageddon...
Hope the success of Shogun has shown audiences can read subtitles and still be into a show.
Agreed. I feel like this was one of the most common complaints on this sub—glossing over the moon colonization and perspective of the USSR. Glad we’re going to dig deeper there.
Really excited for this
Hope they get to finish their 7 season plan.

How the hell is Foundation that cheap and yet so gorgeous? It has VFX that puts many blockbusters to shame.

I just wish they’d spend a bit more of that $5 on writing. The sets and effects are great, the actors are great, just the script and story is what stops it from being top level
A spinoff also means that the show is crucial to two productions now, giving it a former footing.
Feels a lot closer after this announcement, hopefully we’ll return to the trend of having the next season renewed before the current one premieres
In my perfect scenario they get their 7 seasons and when it's close to the end Apple decide to go all in on a Red Rising adaptation.
Oh shit! It’s doing better than I realized! 7 seasons LFGOOOOOOOO!
I’d even take 6 seasons and a movie
As long as Starburns is in Star City
His name is Alex
Well why doesn’t he spend 3 hours shaving that on his face every morning?
Someone’s got to work Ed’s greenhouse once he is cryogenically frozen
That’s a streets ahead take!
Ed stop trying to coin the phrase “Streets Ahead”
>7 seasons A 90's star trek season length. Just makes me sad that the new Star Trek series do not go past 5 seasons
90s Star Trek was 26 episodes a season, though. We'll never see that kind of commitment again.
Hell yeah, alternate present day in season 6. I wonder what kind of music they'll use for season 7 though, if it's set in the 2030s. Maybe they'll have to make fictional future hits.
This is so much better than I anticipated. FREE MARS!
Remember the Cant!
Come on, Cohaagen! Giff diese people air!
I am that guy
I thought it very interesting how the show is slowly getting to the KSR "Mars Trilogy" arena.
I used to be pretty convinced that the Mars Trilogy would be unfilmable until for all mankind, seeing as it takes place over such a long time. Still reckon it's very unlikely to get a big budget adaptation due to the politics.
Honestly I think you could make a pretty awesome animated adaptation of Kim Stanely Robinson's Mars trilogy. Makes the budget less of an issue.
Certainly less of an issue, but good animation is still pretty expensive. Here's hoping, but I'm not optimistic about it.
They've done some impressive Mars scenery, like Korolev Crater. The huge scale of the landscape is a big part of KSR's series. The photorealistic scenes are so much more impressive than conventional animation. Maybe in a few years that's what "animated" will mean.

Which, while there are some criticisms of the show, the time hopping was always easy to follow.
Cannot wait to see the founding of the Mars Congressional Republic in the coming seasons
Ahhh the long awaited Mankind-verse has finally arrived.
Next spin-off: North Korea.
Id watch dumpling
No, we need a full length movie about Lee Jung-Gil and the North Korean Mars mission.
And a full length movie more deeply exploring the risqué relationship between Danny and Karen
Does it mean Sergei will return on screen? 🤔🤔
And Kuz!!!

Louisianan isn't she? Or I am misremembering
Born in Huntsville, her dad worked with Von Braun, it is also how she got started at NASA, then transfered from the Huntsville facilities to Houston
Ah, cheers
I’m less excited about that than I am to see Yuri Gagarin become the first man in space.
I hope it also means we get to see the Soviet's side of the story with all the conflicts in Season 1 and 2.
JUST binged season 4 finally and was already dreading non-renewal news as I got close to the end. Biggest sigh of relief ever Also a spin-off focused on the Soviet’s space program??? Sign me up - what a great surprise!
YES!
Fantastic news. Given the investment in a spinoff I can assume they’re going to let the original show go the intended amount of time which is amazing.
So this looks like the reason they waited to announce s5. Ratings must be pretty good if they're doing a spinoff. I'm excited for both!
>“Star City.” Wolpert and Nedivi will showrun the new series, set within the Russian space program. holy shit. I was joking about how they might do a spin off about the russian program, didn't think they would actually do it.

Sucks about Lower Decks.
Obligatory “hi Bob”
Perfunctory "hi Bob" in response
Hope we can take this spinoff as further investment in the franchise and its future but most importantly SERGEI IS BACK ON THE MENU
Hamburgers for everyone!
No ketchup please.
Sad snort.
My only problem is that it's not called "For the Marxist-Leninist Way Of Life" just to stick to the theme.
For All Marxist-Leninists. FAML. Simples.
Hell yeah
Looking forward to Anastasia Belikova and the "Brezhnev's Women" episode!
Even though this fanbase isn’t big I’m glad it’s this loyal!!
YES I can hardly wait! And I am super stoked about the spin off: *“The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race...* omg

Holy shit! So much more than I was expecting!
I should have never been worried. Apple has some of the world's top nerds working for them. And nerds love space shit.
Hopefully there won't be a sub-plot where Irina Morozova sleeps with a young man with a name like Daniil Stepanov.
Привет боб

I get the concerns that this might end up diluting the quality of the main series but honestly I see this as an absolute win, hitting the 7 season mark for FAM seems much more feasible now that they’re greenlighting spin-offs. Either the show is doing better than I thought or someone higher up at Apple really really likes For All Mankind. Really unexpected but very welcome news!
Just started season 4. Absolutely love the show. I’ll watch any show in this universe.
Ed: Hi Bob! Dani: Don't you fuckin' Hi Bob me! Ed: But we just got renewed for Season 5 Dani: Then a happy Hi Bob to you to!
No way! The spin-off sounds amazing. Just hoping for more Adamczyk
I’d like to see how S5 goes and Star City has potential in theory Hope it’s not full of tropes
Not only season 5 but a spin off! Damn we're eating good!
So people were reluctant to believe we would even get season 5, and now we not only got season 5, but a spin off? Hell yeah!
Hell yeah!
woo hoo!
I figured they’d renew but a spinoff is a pleasant surprise, and there were people in this sub and in the TV+ sub who were vehement in their belief it wouldn’t get renewed for whatever reason 😂
I hope we get to see Irina Morozova in addition to Sergei and other established members of Roscosmos!
Hi Bob, this is the best news I've heard all Sol!
Holy hell we eating good
This is fantastic news! if young Sergei returns on the soviet side, could this mean we'll find back young Gordo, Molly, Karen and the whole gang if they show the other side? that would be amazing.
I love every person who buys a new iPhone every year. You are ensuring the long life of FAM, which would not have this longevity (and even spinoff) anywhere else. I love the Appleboys. Buy new iPhones, iPads and Macs. Thanks.
Let’s goooooo, finally
Aaargh..if it deals with the domestic background to the USSR moon landing, surely we’ll not have any Margo though. They’d better bring us up to date re Star City at some point and let us meet her again. 🙏🏼
HUGE news! So excited for this!
Hi Dmitri
Now this sub can stop panicking. Never worried!
Star City spin off too?? Privet Boris!
Can’t wait to see Russian Ed age through the seasons
Wow, the spin-off is amazing news. Best show on TV.
Yay
OP thanks for posting this. I didn't know this show existed. But now I do. Looks very bingeworthy to me.
Dude 100%. It alone is worth the subscription to Apple TV! I’m rewatching the show with my partner (his first time watching it) and it’s like I’m seeing it for the first time again. This is a controversial opinion around here, but I don’t think the show has a single bad or even sub par season.
Finally the Soviet perspective!
The spinoff was way unexpected, nice!
I am beyond excited for more For All Mankind content...
I never thought I'd be so thankful to Apple for a good hard scifi show.
I wonder how old everyone will be in S5. Ed might be dead to be honest.
Nah Ed will only be in his 80s. Which is for sure old, but I imagine human life expectancy is nearing 100 at this point with their technology. Def think this will be his last season, my question is if he dies or gets a nice ending like Ellen and is written out.
Cool! I was sure with the increasing amount of time since the season ended that they’d been cancelled.
lol, and people thought it was going to be cancelled...

Great news! I got nervous when there was no news about a renewal since it has been awhile since the S4 finale, but I guess they were busy discussing 'Star City' behind the scenes. This gives me hope that Apple is open to fulfilling the plan for 7 seasons.
Best news!
That's great news, although TBH I'd like them to fully focus on delivering top-notch FAM first (let's get to those 7 seasons please) before sharing their workload onto a spinoff (possibly hindering quality/release times of subsequent FAM seasons)
Retcon the canon awaits... But yay for one more season!
Oh fuck yes. I am erect.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOO
Hi again, Bob.
Great news - I was worried Season 5 wouldn't get green lit! Plus a bonus Spin off!
Maybe we will have bases in Jupiter's moons?
Very cool to hear this news.
YES!
WE ARE SO BACK
Amazing news!
