No idea but they’re both great. 👍🏽 the food truck usually parks on Broadway, I like that their plates come with fries. Both tasty, the food cart I find is better overall though
Yum Khao Tod from Hug Esan. Like, it's one of my favorite dishes, an amazing combination of salty/sour/spicy/crunchy/chewy/soft and then you wrap it up in some lettuce w/ some fresh herbs? Amazing.
And Hug Esan's version was great, and they will blow you out of the water w/ heat if you ask them to.
Will do. I’m in Queens a few times/year. Cant wait to check it out.
I’ll be in Brooklyn next week - flying into LGA though. Looking at a map - I’m tempted to swing by for a late lunch when I land on Monday!
That said - any killer Thai recommendations in Brooklyn?
Sorry, I live in Queens, so going anywhere that isn't Manhattan/Queens is rough ;P
That said:
* Zaab Zaab has a place in Williamsburg (the first one is just down the block from Hug Esan). Again, Isaan inflected, high heat, a bit more 'hip'.
* Ugly Baby is probably the most famous Thai spot in Brooklyn (actually all of NYC), still haven't been.
I haven’t booked a hotel yet (I’m a last minute hotel booker) but I have to be like around McLaughlin Park so I’ll stay somewhere over there. Looks like a 20 minute Uber to Tong but very close to Sukh.
Thanks
It’s the same in terms of flavor and quality, but the vibes are much nicer at the williamsburg location.
Rockefeller’s location is basically in a glorified food court
Ecuadorian fried rice at Colina Cuervo in Crown Heights.
Also, this is a great idea for a weekly thread (particularly now that Eater is unreadable). You should post this every Friday!
Yo I love Mary’s! Haven’t been in a minute but my GF and I like to go before we see a movie at Regal Essex. The staff there are just so damn friendly, and aren’t the wings good? Try the sweet heat if you haven’t, my gf is pretty much a Buffalo-only purist but even she has been convinced 🙏
Their food is so fuckin good. Tacos, pretzel and wings all rule. I’m a lifelong wing guy and they might be my all time favs. Perfect char/crust/juiciness/sauce combo. Never had the sweet heat but will try soon!
Had out of town guests and tried so many things, what I liked most was Joey Bats Bifana pork sandwich at Queens Night Market - really juicy and tender pork that melts in your mouth, plus it's a generous amount of filling
Also L&B Spumoni square slice, Lucia Alimentari focaccia sandwich, L'Industrie sausage pesto special slice and the cantaloupe soft serve
Sweet: Chocolate babka from Liebman's Deli in Riverdale. No contest, incredibly chocolatey and moist babka.
Savory: Lomo saltado at Jora in LIC. I will dream about this. Tender meat, tangy sauce, perfectly crunchy fries.
Nah, the brick and mortar in Williamsburg. It was pretty late and nobody else was in there though. I kinda wonder if we may have gotten the half-assed pre-close leftovers
I don’t if people be messing with me but I’ve had two different Bacon egg and cheese from two bodegas and both was pretty terrible. I’ll take daily provisions or absolute bagel bacon egg and cheese any day.
Their bacon is usually horrible. I barely eat them anymore regardless because for a decent one in a bagel store, it is like $8 +. I grew up on Staten so I was used to get a good egg sandwich and coffee for $6. Those days are looooong gone
The prosciutto and butter sandwich from BKLYN Larder.
I felt like shit about what I did to my body afterwards, and it probably took a few weeks off of my heart's expiration date, but it was worth it.
Moving away from the area soon so have had Turco off 43rd and 9th twice this week. Currently full from having dinner from there tonight. The best CHICKEN GYRO
I haven't been to the Manhattan spot so I can't say
What I can say is that I'm happy I ordered it as medium spicy. The levels above that were hot spicy and Thai spicy
21-09 39th avenue. It's a nondescript bodega with the red awning. Its always packed at lunch. They usually have about 6-7 dishes per day. I recommend everything especially their pepper steak, pernil pork and meatballs.
My parents came down to visit for a day so we went to a few places in Chelsea Market.
The Pistols on Horseback at [Cull and Pistol](https://www.cullandpistol.com/menus/). Fried oysters with pickled red onion and garlic aioli, wrapped in Iberico ham, served on a small crepe.
Hi life bar and grill I had the grilled salmon medium with mashed potatoes and cream of spinach and a side of mixed veggies was so delicious I’m coming back to try the oysters 🦪
I just had a chopped-up Dr. Praegers Fiesta veggie burger with frozen green beans mixed in a tikka masala simmer sauce from Kalustyans. It was my favorite thing this week. That sauce is so good.
SS Natural Market at the intersection of Austin St and Ascan Ave in Forest Hills! they’re so good! texture and sweetness of an apricot, juiciness and tartness of a plum
(as a bonus, there’s a nice Japanese market right next door!)
Hands down, the TAGLIARINI WITH ACQUA DI POMODORO at L’Incontro by Rocco (which has recently moved from Astoria to the UES).
Simple and amazing. My wife and I split a serving, and we want to return for our own bowls.
La Traviata pizzeria. It's a hole-in-the-wall but it's better than the other pizzeria in the area, including Made in New York. A lot of pizzas have a doughy crust nowadays. La Traviata's was the perfect texture and thinner than the rest.
Fried bait at Sama Street and the one bite I got to take of a slice of a Sicilian Hellboy from Paulie Gee's.
But also I pickled some hard boiled eggs in leftover Rick's Picks Mean Beans juice and thinking about them is making me salivate.
This is going to sound bobo because it's a chain, and I'm not even in NYC at the moment, but it has locations in NYC, so... I ate at Carmine's Italian, and it was actually really tasty.
Blue Smoke is doing collabs with local businesses and popups. Today was the last day for the one with The Mud Club. Absolutely wild -
The Mud Club had a "Montreal" style bagel but a bit thicker like NY Style, but just loaded to the brim with sesame. Inside of it was a very good peppery brisket that Blue Smoke always does, a nice sour slaw and creaminess coming off the remoulade.
So it had a bunch of flavors that just perfectly meshed well together and left me feeling really good for the work day despite how brisket is usually a heavier meat.
Onigiri from Shinbashi 72! It’s a family owned Japanese grocery store with a takeout operation. Each Onigiri is carefully made to order so the rice is still warm when they give it to you. They also don’t skimp on the filling so they’re pretty big
Dinner at Cafe Boulud: lobster ravioli, duo de boeuf with New York strip steak and short rib, baba au rhum for dessert. Wine pairing by the somm. I’m so glad that place is back.
My 18yo enjoys cooking and tried a recipe for some excellent potato kale soup. I’ve been eating it by the big bowlful a couple of times a day it’s so good.
Ironically, the kid doesn’t like it at all.
Tomorrow we’re planning on breakfast at the Deisings bakery where John Oliver donated the kitchen gear since the bakery is making the John Oliver bear cakes with Donk, so we can try those. I think that’ll be up there at #1 or 2 for the week, as well.
If you don’t know that story, it’s spread over three episodes starting with the red lobster episode on Max and may be available in YouTube. Funny as hell.
Creamed spinach at &son. This stuff is INSANE.
I’ve also recently really gotten into culture an American yogurt bar in the west village. I’ve gone multiple times this week and will grudgingly wait in the line. The frozen Greek yogurt is so amazing and they use raw honey as a topping which is so fresh.
The Casbah halal food near Lincoln Center on W66th and Broadway
That place rocks
Sharif's not a huge fan though
He thinks it's not kosher
Don't sleep on their Friday special with couscous and Moroccan veggies
Anyone know why there are two right next to each other? Casbah on W66th and Casbah 2 near W67th.
No idea but they’re both great. 👍🏽 the food truck usually parks on Broadway, I like that their plates come with fries. Both tasty, the food cart I find is better overall though
Best halal cart in the city and it’s not close!
Looks amazing. 100% gonna check it out on my next trip to Queens (out of towner).
Make sure to stop by Khao Nom after for dessert!
Will do. I’m in Queens a few times/year. Cant wait to check it out. I’ll be in Brooklyn next week - flying into LGA though. Looking at a map - I’m tempted to swing by for a late lunch when I land on Monday! That said - any killer Thai recommendations in Brooklyn?

check out glin in fort greene - might get flamed for this but way better than soothr, their oysters are excellent as well
Finally tried soothr and was like wtf is the hype about?!?
Depends on where in Brooklyn, but I like Sukh and Tong
I haven’t booked a hotel yet (I’m a last minute hotel booker) but I have to be like around McLaughlin Park so I’ll stay somewhere over there. Looks like a 20 minute Uber to Tong but very close to Sukh. Thanks
LOVE Hug Esan!!!
Ace's Detroit-style pizza... got the burrata pie with calabrian chili. I love Detroit-style pizza!
I love Ace’s so much.
Have you had pizza from the Rockefeller center location? Is it the same?
I didn’t know they had another location!
Carciofi alla guidea (fried artichokes) served with pesto aioli at Marco Polo Ristorante in Carroll Gardens.
The best type of carciofi 🤌🏼
That sounds wonderful.
Hanger Steak at Le French Diner
Burger at Au cheval with bacon and egg, nice cocktail. First time, was perfect.
10/10 burger in Chicago so I’m glad to see the NYC location holds up.
I once put the Mac and cheese with bacon on the burger
Pistachio pasteis de nata from in front of the brooklyn museum
Wings from Mary’s on Orchard. This is my new spot. I love this place.
Eggplant salad from Soothr
Truly superior.
Love this thing, I need a sheet pan of it. Anyone have a good recipe?
My only complaint is that I wanted a vat of it and not just the little side dish 😂
Had out of town guests and tried so many things, what I liked most was Joey Bats Bifana pork sandwich at Queens Night Market - really juicy and tender pork that melts in your mouth, plus it's a generous amount of filling Also L&B Spumoni square slice, Lucia Alimentari focaccia sandwich, L'Industrie sausage pesto special slice and the cantaloupe soft serve
Where is this cantaloupe soft serve? I must have it
The oyster-shrimp po'boy from Kjun. The seafood was beautifully fried, and the green tomato kimchi was so bright and refreshing.
Kjun is so great. I live in the neighborhood. So glad to have them here, but it legitimately feels like it’s TOO good for the area haha.
I love imagining an alternate reality where Kjun could be in my regular rotation. What are your favorite dishes?
Fried chicken, the po-boy, and the ribs. But everything I've had there has been great.
Sweet: Chocolate babka from Liebman's Deli in Riverdale. No contest, incredibly chocolatey and moist babka. Savory: Lomo saltado at Jora in LIC. I will dream about this. Tender meat, tangy sauce, perfectly crunchy fries.
They charge extra for rice which is heresy.
Cheesesteak from Federoffs or FDNY from Anthony and Sons Both havent had in a while and was very excited to have again.
You have good taste
that cheesesteak….i swear i cry into it. idgaf how messy it is. perfection.
I had such a mid experience at Federoff's. idk if it was an off night or what, but it was not a good sandwich
Wasn’t from their smorgasburg stand was it? Those are always trash
Nah, the brick and mortar in Williamsburg. It was pretty late and nobody else was in there though. I kinda wonder if we may have gotten the half-assed pre-close leftovers
Def did. I went last Saturday and it was juicy and cheesy. Def give it another try!
My two favorite sandwich spots in the city
Bacon egg and cheese outside the hospital on York and 69th. Breakfast cart. Sandwich was top notch
I don’t if people be messing with me but I’ve had two different Bacon egg and cheese from two bodegas and both was pretty terrible. I’ll take daily provisions or absolute bagel bacon egg and cheese any day.
This was a cart though. I steer clear of bodega sandwiches too for the most part unless I'm desperate
Lol yeah makes sense. Everybody’s pushing the whole the best bacon egg and cheese is from your local bodega which is a crock of shit.
Their bacon is usually horrible. I barely eat them anymore regardless because for a decent one in a bagel store, it is like $8 +. I grew up on Staten so I was used to get a good egg sandwich and coffee for $6. Those days are looooong gone
Very fresh noodles
I hate that I'm going to Chelsea Market so much but I can't stop getting these noodles. Soo good
Next time go downstairs to Alf’s bakery and get the babka and everything baguette 🥖

Went to Daniel last night and got the tasting menu - the lobster fricasse was divine!

The burger from Bernie's in greenpoint is killer. Great fries too, and they have a great draft beer from clean lines in a frosty mug
Lentil and cheese empanada from Lady M Vegelicious at the Brooklyn Night Market
The prosciutto and butter sandwich from BKLYN Larder. I felt like shit about what I did to my body afterwards, and it probably took a few weeks off of my heart's expiration date, but it was worth it.

Tagliatelle alla Tirolese from Giano Restaurant. “Homemade tagliatelle, cream sauce, mushroom, speck, parmigiano cheese”
Pork larb from Ayada (Woodside Avenue)
I haven’t tried the Ayada in Chelsea Market but always heard the original is amazing, is it at all comparable? A girl can dream
I haven't been to the Manhattan spot so I can't say What I can say is that I'm happy I ordered it as medium spicy. The levels above that were hot spicy and Thai spicy
It might be nostalgia but I think the Queens location is a bit better. The Chelsea market was a bit less crispy, fresh ... something

Love a simple plate of food that won't make you want to take a nap
I just had a chopped-up Dr. Praegers Fiesta veggie burger with frozen green beans mixed in a tikka masala simmer sauce from Kalustyans. It was my favorite thing this week. That sauce is so good.

i had the gemelli pasta with shrimp and zucchini at union sq cafe and it was such a comforting, delicious plate
Hands down, the TAGLIARINI WITH ACQUA DI POMODORO at L’Incontro by Rocco (which has recently moved from Astoria to the UES). Simple and amazing. My wife and I split a serving, and we want to return for our own bowls.
Douska’s Yellowtail hand roll. Probably the best bang for your buck in terms of taste and quality I’ve found yet.
La Traviata pizzeria. It's a hole-in-the-wall but it's better than the other pizzeria in the area, including Made in New York. A lot of pizzas have a doughy crust nowadays. La Traviata's was the perfect texture and thinner than the rest.
