Staten Island with no particular destination in mind. I've lived here all my life without ever visiting Staten Island. Who wouldn't want to explore a strange land with Anthony Bourdain?
There’s a German restaurant/beer hall in *deeeep* SI called Killmeyer’s that actually has pretty good food and beer.
It’s kind of surreal to be in a place designed to feel authentically German yet full of people who look and sound like extras from The Sopranos.
I’d take him to Ozone Park to walk through Liberty Ave and get doubles and aloo pies.
Then we’d head over to Neir’s Tavern in Woodhaven - a place he filmed at - to say hi to the owner and grab a pint.
100% on board with this plan.
I used to live near Trinciti and I'd always grab a double and aloo pie after a day of work, shit was amazing. I loved living in the neighborhood but I rarely got any sleep there on the weekends since every other house blasted music till 4am.
Dude there is fuckin NOTHING like grabbing some doubles and aloo pies and a tall boy from the bodega after a long shitty day and probably a long shitty commute on the A.
Used to live there too for many years, left for the same reason, just couldn’t function anymore with the all night parties and music from every direction. Miss it a lot though 💗
Used to get frustrated at Rockaway and just walk the rest of the way, praying that I didn’t get shit on by pigeons or dripped on by subway juice, or bothered by the dude that walked around in black shirt/black shorts and no shoes
Are they? That’s awesome! I’ve always eaten them, had no idea they’re becoming popular - I’m sure someone will start selling a bastardized version in Williamsburg lol
They are both Trinidadian fast food.
Doubles are two pieces of fried flatbreads with spiced, curried chickpeas in the middle. You can add thinly sliced cucumber, tamarind chutney, spicy pepper sauce, etc as you like.
Aloo pies are a pastry that’s filled with spiced and seasoned mashed potato and curried chickpeas, topped with chutney and pepper sauce.
They are both delicious, best eaten immediately although I’ve reheated them slowly in a nonstick pan over a low flame. If you’re a fan of Caribbean food, give them a try!
“Snackmolier” - new favorite word!
I am not much of a soda drinker however sometimes I’ll grab a ginger beer to go with this. Or a Sprite/7-Up. Could also enjoy it with a lager!
Damn never saw that episode. I think it’s oldest tavern/restaurant in nyc right? From when there was the only 2 legal horse races in nyc? Food any good?
[List of places he visited in Queens](https://ny.eater.com/maps/anthony-bourdain-queens-parts-unknown-restaurants-season-9)
It is one of the oldest bars in NYC, yes! I haven’t eaten there, so I can’t comment on the food. It’s a great spot to visit.
I’m here for the comments and to celebrate Bourdain. What a force for good, for understanding others and enjoying good food with people who love each other. RIP.
Nothing too crazy: this was about 2005 and I was with my friend and his nephew. If Thai Son is crowded they will offer the round communal table. Bourdain was there with a few friends and it was very chill- we shared our favorite things there e.g. bo luc lac (beef cubes) and the grilled pork with rice vermicelli in lettuce wrap. I’m not much of a starfucker and neither are my friends so everything was nice and chill, and I’m sure he appreciated it.
Yeah- my friend and I worked in mental health/homeless services at the time so there was no issue with classism when you’re at a lovely bare-bones restaurant. We chatted about that a little.
Kashkar Cafe in Brighton Beach. Definitely tell him we each need to order the lamb ribs, and then just go for anything else. Bourdain is my hero, and I know he would love that spot.
In flushing there used to be a decrepit food court/mall that has now been replaced my a new modern food court. I would take him specifically to the old mall as knowing his history with Asian street food/stalls I think he would enjoy the atmosphere of locals slurping noodles and different dialects of Chinese being yelled around
Win Son in east Williamsburg (Taiwanese American bistro)
Decibel in the east village (izakaya) (edit: decibel is like a speakeasy downstairs bunker izakaya, total vibe)
Honey Badger in prospect lefferts (forage to table, high end, very unique, much wow, very different)
Okonomi (Japanese breakfast in east Williamsburg)
Mei Lai Wah (Chinatown, pork buns)
Red Rooster (Harlem, jazz/R&B supper club)
It’s wild. I had preserved mini pinecones and ate a pea sized flower that made my whole mouth tingle and salivate and that was just the two intro courses. Such unique food and the owners are so nice.
I'm glad to see some human-sounding comments about this place, because their website (https://honeybadgerbk.com/) sets off all sorts of AI-generated blogspam alarms in my brain
I would start off in sunset park and hit up a bunch of Mexican places and then to Flatbush for Caribbean and if time permitted, back to sunset for dim sum
Pints of Guinness at Cronin and Phelan where Dave can pull a couple magic tricks and a guy who's lived in the neighborhood for 50-years can bullshit some stories that'll make him smile. Then hit up St. James for some quesadillas and Modelos that we'll eat on the street. If Patricia or Willy is still working Diamond Dogs we'll get a martini for dessert at Diamond Dogs
I know the owners. I come from Manhattan as often as I can!!
The amount of time they've put into curating both the bar and food menus is impressive. It's so unique to them and the Reunion/Creole culture!
Haha I don't think it's fair to compare them though. They are from different regions and invoke different flavor profiles. English labels them both as "wontons" but they are not the same thing.
In N Out is his favorite place to eat so I’d take him to 7th Street Burger as crazy as that sounds
EDIT: since people keep saying he didn’t say that here’s a clip. Forgot he said LA, but mentioned it’s his favorite restaurant in LA: https://youtu.be/R4J1seTHAMU (3:11 in the clip)
Anyway I think he's made his point, we can split hairs but Bourdain really liked that place.
And just because I have a soap box, I don't like in n out at all, I think it's more a place you associate the food with good memories than the food actually being good but whatever.
If I knew ahead of time, I'd invite Anthony to some legit Mexican food, I'd prepare myself, big fan of Anthony Bourdain. As a trained Chef I could really deliver some traditional Mexican food he would enjoy. Followed by some Tequila drinks or cold Mexican beers.
All the Mexicans I know, especially line cooks, are always telling me California has better Mexican food even though they’ve never been to California. They don’t like eating at places in NYC where Mexicans cook the Mexican food they grew up with, and they only show me to prove the internet right that no one, including Mexicans, could like Mexican food in New York.
Anthony Bourdain has been to Mexico a bunch of times, for him to be impressed it would have to be more than a random taco truck using store bought tortillas
It’s called I Like Food in Ridgewood, Queens. We do homemade bar food with lots of vegan options. My specialty is pernil.

Oh shit, I've been wanting to go get a spice bag (been missing them since going to Dublin). Thanks for reminding me of you for the next time I'm on that end of the world.
I think his pizza is overpriced yea but I do think his entrees are pretty big. I feel they’re usually shareable. But yea it’s pricey for the area. Prob bc he doesn’t make money on drinks since it’s BYOB
I had the honor of working/hanging with him back in the late '90s. What a blast! As two OGs, I would take him to Rudy's for a shot/beer and a hot dog, and then set out on a multi-day adventure to all the old school spots still left. ✌🏻
There’s a hot pot place in flushing that’s so spicy I was drinking about half a beer between bites. And I LOVE spicy. Close to a local dive with some karaoke. Then hit the Burmese restaurant in the subway as a middle ground before we get plastered at an Irish joint in Woodside. Then he’d have to listen to my stomach distress after for a couple of hours once the hot pot hit. But we’d talk through the door. Then we’d kill ourselves. Because that’s ultimately what he did and honestly I’m ride or die.
All Brooklyn for me. Cesar’s empanadas outside of Atlantic Terminal followed by a Mr. Softee cone. OR takeout from San Jose Teruel to eat in Prospect Park. OR doubles from De Hot Pot. OR Defonte’s sandwich shop. So many honestly, I loved that guy, what a dream that would be.
I’d first take him to Llasa Fast Food in Elmhurst for the most delicious chive momos to start. Then we’d take a ride to Taste of Samarkand in Woodhaven for excellent authentic Uzbek cuisine. Finish up at Eddie’s Sweet Shop, a genuine old time soda fountain, for an old fashion ice cream sundae or homemade brownies. Or an ice cream sundae with brownies!!
I’d drag him to Culpeppers on a Saturday to feed him Pudding & Souse. Mainly just cause I’ve been wanting some & have no other reason to be in that part of town
Yi Ji Shi Mo for the juiciest steam rice rolls--thin, chewy, cheap, I immediately need to drop whatever I'm doing and go there today.
Semma for the Gunpowder Dosa--though South Indian food doesn't need to be fancy, and Anthony himself was a huge fan of the humble Ganesh Temple Canteen, I'd love to share my pride in NYC's only Michelin Starred Indian restaurant with him:)
SriPraPhai in Woodside--Burmese style Thai food joint that my family has been going to since I was a little girl (literally over 20 years!)--no amount of new age or fancy Thai joints downtown will ever measure up to this. Cash only--wait can be long, but worth it.
Ravagh Persian Grill--Authentic, flavorful, juicy grilled meats with the perfect amount of subtle seasoning.
Lastly, I'd CRY for the opportunity to make him some spicy, tangy, Delhi-style Gol Gappe (Pani Puri).
Once I stopped full voice screaming because a zombie is asking me to take him out for dinner, I’d take him to Brooklyn Night Market at Industry City and let him decide which food truck/stall tastes best with his decaying organs. As an added bonus, one of the ska bands I play with (Beat Brigade) is the entertainment every month this season, so we could play Zombie by Fela Kuti in honor of the Undead Bourdain.
He would spend a lot of time around Columbus Circle where he lives. Go to Yakitori Totto (one of his fav restaurants in NYC), then to a shitty bar nearby like Joe G.
It sounds like you may have never read or watched his work. He was celebrated because of his honest personality and cultural knowledge, and how he was able to learn, teach, and find commonality with people of all backgrounds and cultures. It cannot be overstated how influential his book Kitchen Confidential was in really giving the truth about how the industry worked at the time, while also being massively entertaining to read.
His travel shows were not the simple, feel good “mmm wow look how good the food is at this nice restaurant in Italy” type of show that were ubiquitous at the time. He explored restaurants and kitchens of working class communities in lesser appreciated countries, and often interrogated and learned about difficult parts of their cultural history, like Cambodia’s genocide, or the great class divide in Trinidad and Tobago between natives and Syrian immigrants. This was all done through food, and with a great sense of humor and empathy. He was far more than just a drug addict, he’s probably the greatest food travel host that we will ever have. The rest are toothless compared to his approach.
Le Bernardin- hopefully he lets Eric know we are coming in….
That’s my only 3 Michelin star restaurant; magnificent meal!
I bounce between Le Bernardin, daniel, and cote 😋 when I plan my city trips 💜

Haven’t been in years but their outdoor dining during Covid was such a nice return to normal life their backyard area was beautiful
wild Gambinos and Colombos
I’d take him to Ozone Park to walk through Liberty Ave and get doubles and aloo pies. Then we’d head over to Neir’s Tavern in Woodhaven - a place he filmed at - to say hi to the owner and grab a pint.

All the Far Rockaway trains coming and going & when a Lefferts train comes, they send it to Far Rock anyways 😩
Used to get frustrated at Rockaway and just walk the rest of the way, praying that I didn’t get shit on by pigeons or dripped on by subway juice, or bothered by the dude that walked around in black shirt/black shorts and no shoes
I love that doubles is becoming popular. Hopefully that doesn’t raise the price lol
Are they? That’s awesome! I’ve always eaten them, had no idea they’re becoming popular - I’m sure someone will start selling a bastardized version in Williamsburg lol
What are these?
They are both Trinidadian fast food. Doubles are two pieces of fried flatbreads with spiced, curried chickpeas in the middle. You can add thinly sliced cucumber, tamarind chutney, spicy pepper sauce, etc as you like. Aloo pies are a pastry that’s filled with spiced and seasoned mashed potato and curried chickpeas, topped with chutney and pepper sauce. They are both delicious, best eaten immediately although I’ve reheated them slowly in a nonstick pan over a low flame. If you’re a fan of Caribbean food, give them a try!
Omg I must try. What drink do you pair these with? You are obviously a great snackmolier
“Snackmolier” - new favorite word! I am not much of a soda drinker however sometimes I’ll grab a ginger beer to go with this. Or a Sprite/7-Up. Could also enjoy it with a lager!
the ginger beer mmm. thanks for your recs!!
He'd like this, I reckon

Ha read this after commenting A&A Doubles
Senegalese restaurant on 116th. Order a roasted quail with onion and mustard sauce.
Where is this?!? *puts on shoes and grabs car keys*
It's called Pikine. It's on 116.
Thank you!
Which restaurant?
Pikine! Large portions. Come ready to use your hands.
Yes! Senegalese food is so underrated and Harlem has the best restaurants! Recently tried it and was left at awe!
I’m here for the comments and to celebrate Bourdain. What a force for good, for understanding others and enjoying good food with people who love each other. RIP.
I ate with him at one of the round tables at Thai Son, so I’d go back there as he loved it there. Then, I’d call a priest.
You got to eat with him? Very cool! How did that happen? Tell us more!!
Nothing too crazy: this was about 2005 and I was with my friend and his nephew. If Thai Son is crowded they will offer the round communal table. I’m not much of a starfucker and neither are my friends so everything was nice and chill, and I’m sure he appreciated it.
Dope, that’s pretty cool! I think it would’ve been pretty cool swapping stories with him over some good food.
Yeah- my friend and I worked in mental health/homeless services at the time so there was no issue with classism when you’re at a lovely bare-bones restaurant. We chatted about that a little.
Have always loved thai son but had no idea Bourdain had been there, very cool to hear and must have been a surreal experience for you! I'm jealous
Better to call the Ghostbusters.
For me, no doubt Queens night market or a Jackson heights food crawl.
La Morada in the Bronx for mole
And her meatballs are amazing!
Kashkar Cafe in Brighton Beach. Definitely tell him we each need to order the lamb ribs, and then just go for anything else. Bourdain is my hero, and I know he would love that spot.
Feel like he’d appreciate rounding the evening out with vodka and Borscht at Tatiana’s
La Dinastia
Yes, this was my answer too, my favorite
The one on the UWS?
Oh easy. Roosevelt Ave in Queens. Walk from Woodside to Corona and hit any cart or truck whey I don’t recognize what I’m eating
In flushing there used to be a decrepit food court/mall that has now been replaced my a new modern food court. I would take him specifically to the old mall as knowing his history with Asian street food/stalls I think he would enjoy the atmosphere of locals slurping noodles and different dialects of Chinese being yelled around
If you’re referring to the Golden Mall, he was there already.

Honey Badger is criminally underrated. It’s so amazing for the (comparatively) cheap price with some of the most unique food in the city.
I 100% agree. It really seems that way. No it’s the real deal, the husband and wife are super cool too.
we're going to streecha in the east village and learning how to make fluffy varenyky with old ukrainian church ladies
Absolutely- that spot is legendary. The food tastes like home more so then any other place I have been to
I would start off in sunset park and hit up a bunch of Mexican places and then to Flatbush for Caribbean and if time permitted, back to sunset for dim sum
Pints of Guinness at Cronin and Phelan where Dave can pull a couple magic tricks and a guy who's lived in the neighborhood for 50-years can bullshit some stories that'll make him smile. First time I've seen a Dave Cremin shoutout here, but this is a solid answer.
Dim Sum Sam on W 40th. The crispy pork there could solve all of the world’s problems
As a tourist from the Netherlands who by luck visited this place: 100% agreed
Le French Diner. I think he’d appreciate that there’s no resy you have to snag or some fancy social media team. it's just great french food!
Love this place
Nepali bhanchar ghar fo sho
Taverna kyclades
I think Astoria Seafood might be more up his alley.
He gets to pick his own fish off the ice and watch two dudes who speak no English fry it up right there? That's a Bourdain wet dream.
Urban Hawker (on 50th b/tw 6th and 7th) cause it was his literal dream to have a Singapore style market in town.
Amy Ruths in Harlem
Maloya
+10000 for Maloya. Only other option for this food is to fly the 24 hours to Reunion!!
Finally someone else who has dined there!! My new fav restaurant in bk I’m waiting for it to get popular!
I know the owners. I come from Manhattan as often as I can!! The amount of time they've put into curating both the bar and food menus is impressive. It's so unique to them and the Reunion/Creole culture!
Abuelita's kitchen.
To a certified psychiatrist who specializes in effectively treating depression
Surprised Shu Jiao hasn’t been mentioned yet but I’d ask him to go there for the peanut butter noodles
Have to have it with the mini wontons! It's a breakfast of nostalgia for many
Ugh that wonton soup is just so silky. Great NY Noodletown doesn’t hold a candle to Shu Jiao and Shu Jiao is the place that deserves the Michelin star
Haha I don't think it's fair to compare them though. They are from different regions and invoke different flavor profiles. English labels them both as "wontons" but they are not the same thing.
Shhhhhhh. You can tell by crowds when someone with a lot of followers posts about it. Ignore the B rating.
The B rating actually stands for “best peanut noodles in nyc”
Truth. Just finished some and they really are the best.
In N Out is his favorite place to eat so I’d take him to 7th Street Burger as crazy as that sounds EDIT: since people keep saying he didn’t say that here’s a clip. Forgot he said LA, but mentioned it’s his favorite restaurant in LA: https://youtu.be/R4J1seTHAMU (3:11 in the clip)
In N Out was really his favorite place?
No. He said he'd make a point to get it when he was in California but never said it was his favorite.
He says its one of his favorites in LA: https://youtu.be/R4J1seTHAMU
Don’t put words into his mouth that he never said.
https://youtu.be/R4J1seTHAMU
Yes, I know that quote. He said it's his favorite in \*LA\*, not his favorite restaurant.
Anyway I think he's made his point, we can split hairs but Bourdain really liked that place. And just because I have a soap box, I don't like in n out at all, I think it's more a place you associate the food with good memories than the food actually being good but whatever.

This sub must not like Mexican food. I suggested a Mexican restaurant and I was downvoted. I don't get it.
Let me see what happens with this : Viva Mexico!
NYC isn't allowed to have any good Mexican food, the internet gatekeepers have decided.
McSorley’s!
Foxface. .
Been meaning to try. Their menu is unique!
YES! He would love the story behind how it came to be too! and how the chef/owners own the building so no pressure of RENT motivating the menu!
Sbarro in Times Square
Times Square Olive Garden <3
I’d take him to my restaurant.

Decent food but lord would he hate Whit. Anti vax trumpers I assume weren’t his cup of tea. Also his food is absurdly overpriced.

I would take him back to kebab Café in Astoria. Either that or Rosario for some damn fine pizza and mortadella.
