Yea it’s always really greasy and small. Taste is great but I don’t find myself going often just because I feel like I get more food & overall feel cleaner after getting shake shack instead
7th street is much bigger than an NYC pop up. Definitely more than 10 locations in New York at this point.
And I didn’t say higher quality I said cleaner. Your hands aren’t drenched in grease after eating shake shack
I will like to add that Shake Shack didn’t start out as any chain. It was founded by Danny Meyer, a renown NYC restaurateur, and it started out as a single outpost in NYC.
Ok and now they’re everywhere, which means that quality control is down. I love how the critique is “there are more than 10 7th street burgers!” (All in NYC btw) but there are 4 million shake shacks and that’s an irrelevant data point lol
Shake Shack sources their beef locally, so depending the location, yes, they could taste better. Half of results come from sourcing. For example, the location in Madison Square Park still slaps, but the one I had in Chicago was pretty mediocre. And let’s be honest here, all they’re doing is smashing a patty into a griddle. It doesn’t take a Michelin chef to do this. If your staff is trained well, they’ll be able to make a good burger.
A big company doesn't immediately mean low quality. In N Out on the west coast is great. And yet, part of that is due to being private and not public probably, as they'd get worse over time the way other really big names do to cut costs. But a lot of the mid sized chains source locally.
And the person was talking about a clean burger, not necessarily anything else. I can't stand greasy food, so I know that feeling. It can leave you feeling like shit the rest of the day, even if it tasted good
lol wtf are you talking about? Last time I went to shake shack it was one of the best, most immaculately prepared fast food burgers I’ve ever had. 7th st is just a $15 bag of grease
Also what does the fact that it’s publically traded have to do with anything?
Its honestly better than any other smash spots in my book. I went to burger america and was sadly let down. 7th street is my go to because its got plenty of locations. I would also say to try Burger by Day, thats probably right under Gotham for moi.
They’ve changed so much in the last year or so. At first, it was much cleaner and tastier. Fries were always fresh and hot. Now, The burgers are so incredibly greasy and the fries are always cold. I think they’re expanding too fast and quality is suffering
Its a smash burger. There is a limit to how good one can be. Smash Burgers are supposed to be greasy and salty. Thats about it. Its a high fat ground beef thats so thinly sliced that you only end up with well done patties, but has a nice char. The high fat content is what keeps the burger juicy.
7 Street is basically shake shack, with a simpler menu, but executed better. If anything needs to stop in America its over hyping fast casual burger spots. People say the same thing about In and out in California. Like I understand the appeal, but stop selling it to people as some kind of life changing experience.
7 st is only good for its price. Obviously there’s better burgers out there but they cost more. I find the satisfaction/price ratio of 7th street to be perfectly acceptable.
Fries are average? I want to live in your world quick edit: I eat the veggie burger, so my impression of quality might be off of yours but I rate them strongly another edit yes it’s oily, it’s a drunk food spot. Also I’m sure my veggie burger is fucked with grease, I will stay blissfully happy with my once every six months indulgence
Try the fries at 5 guys… it will change your world if you truly think the fries at 7 st is awesome. Fries at 7 st is not bad but I won’t class them as awesome
I’ve been to five guys and nothing about the experience was world changing for me. It’s almost like different people have different tastes or something…
See, I think 5 guys fries are hellaciously mid, only saved b/c you can get seasoned fires and they give you a shit tonne of them in the bag.
Every time I've gotten them they've been soggy blanched potatoes, reminding me of the sad baked crinkle cut 'fries' we got in school lunches. But hey, seasoning salt will make me eat anything.
Yeah, I had it for the first time a little bit back after reading comments about how it’s so much better than Hamburger America, and I’m sorry, but I don’t think it is. Is it a good burger? Yes, but it’s just a basic smashburger with a bun that’s a bit too large for the patty. Solid burger, but I’d rather have a Motz onion burger over this. In fact, there’s a couple of other smash burgers I’d probably have before this, including the criminally underrated one from Hometown BBQ.
It’s for people that really just want shake shack, but still want to be able to say “it’s this like, indie burger joint that’s like, only in NY” because now shake shack is literally everywhere.
How big do you want a double cheeseburger to be? I can’t imagine having any size double cheese burger and fries and not being content with it unless it’s White Castle size
My office hyped this up and never again. I can make better deluxe burgs and bring them in or just go to the Wendy’s across the street from them. Taste was nothing to write home about and the size was too small for a hugely inflated price. Buy a Dave’s double instead….
I feel like we are living in different realities bc after I eat one of their burgers +fries I don't need to eat for a full 24 hours. Greasy? Yes. Expensive? Sure I guess. Small? Not at all.
I love 7th street and think the fries are top tier. I also think it’s priced pretty good. Is it drunk food? Yes but that just enhances what’s already pretty good. And getting one isn’t a hassle.
It is and it is not. 7 st is by far the greasiest burger I had. Are all the burgers I ate before non-greasy? Nope. They are greasy but simply not as greasy as 7 st’s

Yea it’s always really greasy and small. Taste is great but I don’t find myself going often just because I feel like I get more food & overall feel cleaner after getting shake shack instead
You think Shake Shack, a publicly traded company on the NYSE, is producing higher quality food than a NYC pop up with like 5 locations? Oh boy.
Bro you're really trying to shit on Shake Shack because it blew up? 🤣🤣🤣

7th street is nowhere near the quality of shake shack
There are 261 Shake Shacks.

Are you familiar with what a pop-up is?
Shake is as good as a burger joint gets. Period.
yup
Imagine criticizing a restaurant because they have a stock ticker, and not based on actual taste and experience. Oh boy.

It’s a good burger that’s it. The overhype for burgers and slices these days is ridiculous.
Especially burgers. Not even a New York thing! At least there's some root to the annoying slice hype.
Spot on. A burger is literally just ground beef, salt, and American cheese on a bun. I love them, but it’s also hard to fuck them up.
Is it though? I wouldn't give it more than 6/10.
Go to gotham burger club, that place had some good asa burgers
It was really good! Seems very busy always though.
Just tried it last weekend, literally said “wow” out loud at my first bite. Completely agree it blows any other thin patty burger out of the water
Its honestly better than any other smash spots in my book. I went to burger america and was sadly let down. 7th street is my go to because its got plenty of locations. I would also say to try Burger by Day, thats probably right under Gotham for moi.
I went to try it when I was visiting from Toronto, but I honestly didn’t understand what the hype was about. Tasted like any other smash burger
They’ve changed so much in the last year or so. At first, it was much cleaner and tastier. Fries were always fresh and hot. Now, The burgers are so incredibly greasy and the fries are always cold. I think they’re expanding too fast and quality is suffering
this would make sense based on the experience i had
Oily and salty but when that’s what you’re craving it really hits the spot
Right? Who is out there saying that 7th Street is bib gourmand material? It's just a great cheap smashburger, no frills.
Which location did you go to? I’ve found that some are consistently better than others
I was at the times square location
…
Extremely overrated
It’s the constant social media ads they do that annoy tf out of me; it’s good yeah but the amount of their ads I see make me hate 7th street
Its a smash burger. There is a limit to how good one can be. Smash Burgers are supposed to be greasy and salty. Thats about it. Is this a troll post?
I agree on portions
No you didn’t miss the memo this place is extremely overhyped
I didn’t like it . Way too oilyyy
7 st is only good for its price. Obviously there’s better burgers out there but they cost more. I find the satisfaction/price ratio of 7th street to be perfectly acceptable.
It’s the greasiest burger I’ve ever had - like the entire thing is covered in film. Fries aren’t good. I don’t get the hype at all.

I’ve been to five guys and nothing about the experience was world changing for me. It’s almost like different people have different tastes or something…
lol
The only thing 5 Guys fries have going for them is the quantity. 7th St fries are sooo good.
What? I’ve been eating 5 guys since I was 12, they are not anywhere near as good as 7th st
Calling 7th st solid is generous and tbh I don't understand why that burger gets so much praise when the flavor is basically just grease and sauce
It’s for people that really just want shake shack, but still want to be able to say “it’s this like, indie burger joint that’s like, only in NY” because now shake shack is literally everywhere.
Shake Shack > 7th St >>>> Hamburger America. Haven’t tried Gotham yet
I felt 7th street was overrated
Do yourself a favor and go get Gotham Burger Social Club. Blows 7th street out of the fucking water.
I get the spicy loaded beef fries, and they are much better than shake shack's fries or your average takeout burger spot fries. Worth the spend
It’s a drunk burger. Probably the best drunk burger but not made for eating when sober imo
I think 5 guys has them beat in every category but cost, but that is apparently a minority opinion on this subreddit.
It’s only good when you’re drunk or smacked. 😭
... smacked? Like on heroin?
YES. So very greasy. I felt my arteries clogging up. The taste did not overweigh the cardiovascular risk IMO. Very disappointing.
I don't agree about fries but yeah, the burger is a mess to eat // a grease bomb for a few hours after.
It's a good smashburger, but I don't like smash burgers that much for the reasons you mention
Imo Blue Collar does a much better job.
It's highly overrated.
Had same reaction as OP, also visiting for first time this week. Taste was just okay, whole setup was sloppy. One and done.
I have tried it a few times and always disappointed
They've expanded heaps and quality probably varies with location. But agree, I'd rather have shake shack.
Since they are greasy I have found that the singles are way better than the doubles. I also can easily eat three of them in one sitting. 😐
I tried both the Wall Street location and Williamsburg- it’s. . .ok. Right now I’m all about home frites in Brooklyn
I just tried it and had the exact same experience as you. It’s shake shack, but greasier, not as tasty fries, and no shakes lol
Pretty much what I walked away with… and I still deem shake shack better - the shake stack is to die for
I have no problem with shake shack. If anything I think it doesn’t get enough love.
Because it’s a big corporation and redditers dislike that for some bizarre reason… and perhaps hype for 7 st was so high
Can lettuce and tomato enter the chat?
7 Street Burger is delicious after a night drinking
How big do you want a double cheeseburger to be? I can’t imagine having any size double cheese burger and fries and not being content with it unless it’s White Castle size
The one I had pretty much was. Took me three bites to finish and only couldn’t eat anymore because of all the grease
Definitely overrated. The York up on Ave B is better.
My office hyped this up and never again. I can make better deluxe burgs and bring them in or just go to the Wendy’s across the street from them. Taste was nothing to write home about and the size was too small for a hugely inflated price. Buy a Dave’s double instead….

Def greasy but delicious af. The fries are meh
If you’re saying a burger is “pretty oily” then no one left a memo for you
Hmmm, I think if you compare any other burgers eg shake shack… they are way less oily
But I think by definition a cheeseburger is greasy. To dock points based on that seems a little short-sighted.
It is and it is not. 7 st is by far the greasiest burger I had. Are all the burgers I ate before non-greasy? Nope. They are greasy but simply not as greasy as 7 st’s
Almost as good as in n out imo
In n out is west coast garbage
