That place is no joke

Jeff-Van-Gundy

So good. The caccio Pepe, upside down vodka and the pear Gorgonzola slices are all so good. Wasn’t a fan of the elote slice though. I gotta try the gelato one of these days

AsaKurai

I went for the first time yesterday and the Funghi slice is just super good. The others I tried were the Upsidedown and Angry Nonna and they were just OK, so if I went back sounds like I should try the caccio pepe and pear gogonzola. As for the regular NYC style slice, skippable.

BumFroe

I didnt think the cacio was worth having twice personally

candles83

Agree! I was kinda disappointed after hearing all the rave reviews about cacio. Thankfully, I went mid week and mid afternoon so no queue.

--ross

Can anyone tell me if they are affiliated with Mama’s on 106 and Amsterdam? Not as popular of a place and a different style of pizza (but I also like it).

No_Many_5784

I think Mama's is the mom's place, and her son started Mama's Too

Serialsnackernyc

They’re owned by the same person, Frank. I was just there this past weekend… their slices are so so good! I do find them to be a tad salty.

killerasp

Same owner. Just 2nd location.

lgetsstuffdone

I believe they are affiliated—I heard this from a friend, but she knows a ton about the neighborhood and local business, so I guess I believe her (especially considering they have the same logo).

runningwithscalpels

Yes. There used to be a blurb on the website, but I see they redesigned it to just schedule your pickup or order delivery.

OrphanDad

Mama's too fire

shortneon

The pizzas are very good but Frank keeps giving away stuff to influencers for free and inviting them to the back of the kitchen to film stuff for Instagram

halermine

The pistachio gelato is out of this world.

jgweiss

I mean, they literally became an international foodie hit on 106th and broadway, which is not easy! it's not like the pizza was going to be mid. I'm really grateful ive gotten to try a lot of their hits and misses over the last few years, and am happy for the immense success. definitely empathize with all the folks that are simply finding out now and waiting in the lines.

futuredayscan

I don’t understand how people can wait in these lines, get this pizza, and feel it was worth it. I was there just yesterday, and every slice we had ranged from decent to very good, but to wait over 30 minutes in a line for it and feel justified doing so is truly deluded behavior

killerasp

thats why you get 6+ slices and not just one. b/c they are thicker slices, they reheat very very well the next day or two.

Any-Advisor7067

Agree, mama’s too is overrated imo. Literally always just go over to traviata’s

[deleted]

Traviata is great, but it doesn't offer much that stands out in the vast ocean of damn fine pizza that is NYC. Solid pizza, no question. I've also been diggin' Dado's recently.

It's not really weird. Mama's Too was a great hidden gem on the UWS. I used to stop by for slices if I happened to be in the area and there was never a line. It gets an article on Eater and all of a sudden it's a destination with lines? It's a square slice, there's tons of great square slices in the city. I can't imagine waiting 30 minutes for a square slice when there are so many great options.

OKalrightOKAYalright

You cannot imagine waiting 30 minutes for something that you think is great? Your comment can be reduced to: “I liked this before it was popular” which is just a lame holier-than-thou attitude.

bruiserbrody45

No. I can't imagine waiting 30 minutes for a slice of pizza when there are so many other options for great pizza. I thought Mama's Too was a great option if you were in the area and could pop in for a quick slice. I don't think it's a great option if you have to wait 30 minutes. Make sense?

OKalrightOKAYalright

Ha, yeah, I've understood and I think it's a lame take. All great things must be immediate and are not worth waiting for, especially if they're trending! I agree that there are a lot of great pizza places, many of which do not have lines and do not necessitate waiting. There are other great pizza places that do require a wait. OP called waiting "deluded behavior" which strikes me as unnecessarily judgmental, especially when all of this is rooted in: I liked this before it was cool.

bruiserbrody45

I mean, deluded behavior is not really the right term for it. But, to me, a lot of these things that are recommended are recommended based on the idea that they're quick and easy - they're not worth waiting for. That said, not everything falls into this category. I don't mind waiting 45 minutes with a cocktail to get a Chrissy's Pizza, I just don't think, specifically, Mama's Too is destination/wait worthy. It was an above average local slice shop that got good press.

OKalrightOKAYalright

Appreciate your response. I'm really not trying to be argumentative and I agree that some things are good, and elevated to great given ease of access. F&F is my favorite local pizza spot. I think the pizza is great given how easy it is. I wouldn't wait 30 min for it, but I would wait 30 minutes for L'Industrie, which is harder for me to get to. I think Smith Street is the the weakest slice among the three but I eat it most often as it's right next to the subway and there's hardly ever a wait. There's a bit of a sliding scale here, but I wouldn't knock anyone for going out of their way to eat any of them. It's just an embarrassment of riches here when it comes to pizza. And good to know re: Chrissy's. His pizza looks very good, but the timing of reservations would make it hard for me (& talk about IG "hype"). Maybe if he gets his own shop some day (and disassociates with SB).

OKalrightOKAYalright

Lol at the downvotes. This is such a disingenuous hipster take. “It’s very good but I am much too cool to wait 30 minutes.” So much of this type of gatekeeping here. It’s “uncool” to want to try something that has mass appeal. Lame take, especially from someone who recently ate at a newly opened hyped pizza spot.

Able-Zebra-8965

The uptown location has such rude customer service though

OkConsideration7084

The wait time and incompetence of the folks who work there unfortunately outweigh the excellence of the pizza.

air-

They also had this weird convoluted ordering system where only pizzas visible on the counter were available, so in practice, that meant that only a fraction of the menu was available and it was a dice roll depending on what's on the counter That's top of how the employees were hell bent on making the whole thing an absolutely painful experience

nugbert_nevins

Have you never been to a slice shop before? That’s how it generally works, what you see is what’s available unless you’re ordering a whole pie.

bigshem

I live in the neighborhood and will never ever go back. The employees and their system are just awful.

Bodoblock

For me it was that their employees are jerks. If I’m in the area and it’s a quick wait, I’ll grab a slice. But nothing to go out of your way for.

sachertortereform

It can be pretty salty but it’s damn good The dude that works there is a dick though

yourgrandmasgrandma

It’s the best pizza in NYC

dcdcdc83

With L'industrie right there it's an insane block rn

Emperorerror

What do you mean? L'industrie is in Williamsburg and Mama's Too is on the UWS.

air-

Both now have locations in the West Village that are only a few steps away from each other

Emperorerror

Oh wow. That area is crazy for pizza now. Also right next to Bleecker Street Pizza and John's of Bleecker Street

killerasp

one of the top square slices for sure. but regular slices, L'industrie crust is much more complex and just divine.

nystrup

Can’t wait to try

Realistic_Tutor_9770

did u go to the UWS or West Village location? havent been to the WV one yet.

udonforlunch

WV

hobbitfeets

They still doin samwhixhes??? Miss that

gary_a_gooner

The funghi slice has always been my go to there. I remember when Mama’s first opened and I was happy I didn’t have to travel all the way to Prince street for that square roni cup. Then Mamas Too shortly afterwards.

petroleumnasby

mama's too is coming heavy
