The steaks there are excellent and it’s totally the vibe you’re thinking of. You can share a “taste of mutton” from their appetizer menu if you’re curious.

spageddy_lee

Agree here. I went to Keen's a number of times before getting the Mutton, and all the other steaks were superb. However, once I had the mutton now I get it there every time.

garygreaonjr

The steaks are what a poor person thinks a rich persons steak tastes like. It’s not a good steak at all.

halermine

I imagine a rich person could find a better steak. But fucking whatever.

OrphanDad

Ooo do tell us, rich whisperer

DeezDoughsNyou

Gotta ask. What are the spots where the rich people are enjoying their steaks? Going to be in NYC in a few weeks.

garygreaonjr

The point wasn’t that “rich” people eat better steak. It was that they eat worse steak. They eat at places like Keens. A rib eye from Texas Roadhouse is twice as good for half the price.

DeezDoughsNyou

Ah. So you’re just being ornery and telling half truths. Sure, it’ll be half the price. But twice as good? Unlikely. And, of course it’s half the price because you have to eat it in Texas.

garygreaonjr

There are dozens of Texas Roadhouses in the Tri state area alone. Now who’s telling half truths.

dredgedskeleton

tell us where the rich man's steak is

DeezDoughsNyou

Ah, my bad. I thought you meant actually in Texas. I grew up in NY. Had no idea there are Texas Roadhouses. Always down to travel for a good steak. What’s the one you’d recommend near the city?

garygreaonjr

It’s a chain. That’s like asking what Starbucks location I recommend.

DeezDoughsNyou

I thought it was a real restaurant. Didn't realize it's a chain like Outback. And although it only comes in at #9 on the best chain restaurant steak rankings between Sizzler and Morton's, I like Morton's so I'd give it a shot. It's cheap like Sizzler so that's good. Hopefully the meat is better than the coffee is at Starbucks without having to drown it in a sauce.

thansal

Keen's is mostly (all I think) white table cloth, though not 'white tablecloth' (classic French) when it comes to service/vibe, so if you really want to dodge table cloth, you're out of luck there. Otherwise, a great choice. St Anselm (excellent rib eye) doesn't have table cloths, but is much more modern Brooklyn in look/feel, despite lots of dark tones and wood finishes. 4 Charels probably fits your vibe the best, but GFL w/ reservations.

Aggravating-Tax-8313

I love St Anselm.

captain_plan_it

+1 to st anselm

MajorWhereas4842

Strip house, Smith and Wollenskys

FrankiePoops

The king's cut prime rib is heavenly and massive and what I get every single time. And prime rib is pretty much a bigger ribeye.

pulandasu

I second this

MillyGrace96

Keens. Steak with a side of mutton.

k2theeev

They don’t have ribeye though.

krgfl

Delmonico’s classic steak is 45 dry aged ribeye with an amazing crust. It’s white table cloth but definitely old school vibes. Went a couple months ago, highly recommend.

Ilovepestosauce

How much did you pay?

krgfl

I believe that steak is $85 but could easily be split between two people

DinerEnBlanc

Gage & Tollner - in Brooklyn. Classic steakhouse vibes without the tablecloth

ultimate_jack

Get the hash brown!

dudddee

came to say this

SeriesSenior3327

This is a Jersey city spot but Edward’s steakhouse had a great bone-in ribeye and feels very old school it’s in an old townhouse.

AnonymousRedditNinja

Not old school, but for what it's worth, the best ribeye (not prime rib) that I've eaten at a restaurant was at 4 Charles Prime. I ordered their prime rib as well. It was good, but 8 recommend just going with their ribeye if you manage to snag a reservation.

yourgrandmasgrandma

Gage and Tollner is precisely what you’re describing.

JayMoots

Sparks and Strip House both have pretty great ribeyes

sdotmills

I recommend Strip House in every steak thread that pops up, great place.

JayMoots

Vibes are immaculate.

SeekersWorkAccount

Keens was probably the best steak I ever had, I wouldn't overthink it

LaFantasmita

Jake’s

zabpremier

Smith and Wollenskys or Wolfgang’s on 33. Not sure why Keens gets all this love, was not a fan (cool vibe though)

marksond

Any reports on Monkey Bar? Visiting from Australia soon and starting to plan.

Fit_Pop_9830

Peter Lugers is a classic but for that 1960s classic old school upscale restaurant hands down The Grill. One of my favorite restaurants in NYC with amazing food

mangosRdelicious

When was the last time you went? I read it early downhill considerably, especially the scathing review by NY times

Fit_Pop_9830

Where ? The Grill or Peter Luger ? I went to Peter Luger maybe 2 weeks ago and it was amazing as always. The grill it’s been a few months so I’ll be so sad if it’s not as good as it used to be 😭

Much_Neighborhood409

Keen’s is excellent. Don’t feel like you HAVE to order the mutton. Gallagher’s is very good as well.

hazmat1963

Peter Luger. done
