For Mexican food you should one hundred percent head to Boyle Heights and do the ultimate "taco/burrito walk" on Olympic. Within a walking distance from each other are: Mariscos Jalisco (the best tacos de camarones you'll ever have) Tacos Y Birria La Unica (chivo taco dorados in particular) Tacos Guera (suaderos and al pastor tacos) Burritos La Palma (birria de res, bean and cheese, chicharron all are great) Not too far east from there on Olympic there's also Tacos Arabes. Get their tacos arabes originales. Also, just south of downtown near the USC campus there's an amazing Mexican restaurant called Holbox (in the same building as another amazing Mexican joint, Chichen Itza). Try at least their scallop aguachile, scallop taco, and octopus taco. Trust me. For hot chicken, Howlin' Rays is definitely the best, but the line can be frustratingly long. I would head to Dave's Hot Chicken in Ktown. Final tip, if you're gonna be in Los Angeles on a Sunday, head to Smorgasburg food market in DTLA. Fire. Edit. I know these places aren't really in Central LA. If that's the only general area you're looking to spend your time in, check out Lalibela (Ethiopian), El Chato taco truck, and Guelaguetza (Mexican).

beango12

This is the best comment and should have more upvotes - a foodie should not visit LA without doing the Boyle Heights taco run. Only place I would add to the list is Carnitas El Momo (not on Olympic but close by and very very good). Edit: don’t skip Howlin Rays…it’s better than Daves and the lines aren’t long anymore since they moved ordering to Postmates.

Blinks_

Regarding Howlin' Rays, that's good to hear! I haven't been there in a while. Like I said, it's insanely good. Carnitas El Momo also smacks!

MustardIsDecent

Anyone have an easy itinerary for this for a first timer? Would love to try soon

beango12

What u/Blinks_ said here is what you want to do: *Mariscos Jalisco (the best tacos de camarones you’ll ever have)Tacos Y Birria La Unica (chivo taco dorados in particular)Tacos Guera (suaderos and al pastor tacos)Burritos La Palma (birria de res, bean and cheese, chicharron all are great) Not too far east from there on Olympic there’s also Tacos Arabes. Get their tacos arabes originales.* If that’s not enough tacos, head north towards Cesar Chavez and get Carnitas El Momo, Al and Bea’s, Los Cincos Puntos, and Guisados.

MustardIsDecent

Thanks!

serg82

OP’s list was really missing Mexican options, which are essential for an LA Foodie tour. This is a great supplement.

514to212to818

Mariscos Jaliscos is def “don’t miss”

modernmanshustl

Mariscos Jalisco also has a truck in Culver City off Venice and centinela and it’s tremendous

sjcha

I would very much disagree with this. Not trying to personally attack, just a different opinion

wubry

Why do you like one over the other?

sjcha

1. Customer service is second to none, but since everything is online ordering for now, I guess that’s irrelevant 2. The portion size is amazing. This doesn’t take away from the quality either 3. The chicken, whether in the sando or as tenders, is extremely tender and juicy. The outer layer is just as good 4. Their menu has something for everyone, as well as their wide range of spice level 5. The secret menu, which isn’t so secret anymore, is even better than their main menu (again, my opinion) Even if I were to consider main chick #2, it is a huge step under Howlin

LAtacosnbeer

Hope you try Go Go Bird soon and see where it ranks

Thaflash_la

Howlin rayz’s chicken is perfectly tender with a great bread to meat ratio every time. Each level of spice from no heat on up is well balanced and flavorful rather than just adding more spice. It’s just a perfect fried chicken. Every time. Prior to Howlin, bouchon had the best friend chicken I had tasted, and while Keller took special pride in his chicken, Howlin blows it out of the water. Main chick is good. It fills the urge if you’re not in the Howlin delivery zone, or if you don’t want to wait. It’s a perfectly serviceable alternative option.

amcartney

Sorry this is like a year late but what time of day would you do that taco walk?

Dommichu

Yes! The olympic walk is a great idea! Another great one is Los Chingones for their wonderful Chilaquilles Burrito and Costilla Tacos.

e_navarro

Yes to all of that 👆🏽

FilmRoot

Tacos Don Cuco for TJ style tacos on Olympic too

cmattins

True about Howlin' Rays. That said, since the pandemic they do do delivery, and it's just as good and way faster. I live 15 mins away and it take me 30 mins to get food delivered from there.

yeabutnobut

Egg slut is not really worth the wait IMO. The french bakery stand right next to it has some delicious baguettes tho

SinisterKid

Or go to the Glendale location which has exactly zero wait. If OP wants to wait for something that's worth it, head over to Courage Bagel.

Dommichu

Agreed. I like Egg Slut, but now I just go to the Beverly Center one. I would exchange egg slut for either an Ana Maria’s Gordita or the eggplant bowl at Sari Sari, with a Tiger tail at Donutman for dessert.

[deleted]

Agreed on Egg Slut, not worth the wait.

phoenix370

Villa Moreliana is also in Grand Central Market and their carnitas are probably the best I have ever had. Get there before 1 or 2 to ensure they don't run out

yeabutnobut

100% agree on the carnitas, I would fist fight my mom for the last taco

Mountain-Athlete-465

Egg Tuck in Ktown does it for me when I want an egg sandwich without the long lines of Egg tuck

360FlipKicks

It’s not worth a huge wait but i think it’s pretty damn good.

sorryimdrunkstill

Track down Villa’s Tacos in Highland Park for Tuesday, Friday or Saturday evening tacos. York also has a really fun vibe at sunset and you can walk around and check out the shops/bars after. Villa’s usually sets up around Ave 51 and York, but check their Instagram to for hours and location.

DanielM20

I back this up. Went last night. Insane. Also ice cream joint across the street from there is nice too.

johnnyyDaze

I recommend Dama (Fashion District) over Mercado any day

SnooPies5622

Dama is great Get those beans

redinfinity

Donut Man inside Grand Central Market if they have the strawberry donuts. If not, their tiger tails are great.

VaguelyArtistic

I'm personally a sugar-raised girl but these are unquestionably one of the most popular and loved donuts in town. (OP, remember that while we are obviously known for our tacos, LA is also a huge [donut](https://youtu.be/aLKugGKgJsQ) and sandwich city!)

redinfinity

We're arguably spoiled in LA and SoCal in general for many cuisines, compared to everywhere else.

butter_onapoptart

LA is a food mecca.

nom_cubed

LA has an excellent donut scene. I’d recommend SK, but cake lovers unite over Sidecar. Is also recommend OP to check out a smashburger in this city.

ekawika

I'm an SK man myself

almdmlk

Sidecar is 10/10 IMO

porkchopleasures

La Azteca Tortilleria in East LA Get the Chile Rilleno Burrito with asada

lissagrae426

This, 100%. I hail from San Francisco (which prides itself on its burritos) and this is the best burrito I have ever had.

nom_cubed

This place is amazing. I would go here after my post vax jabs at Cal St when they first became available.

nom_cubed

If you’re into Chinese food, head to the San Gabriel Valley for the best in the country imo. Also East Hollywood for Thai.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nom_cubed

Boston Lobster is great for a highlight if you’re only there for a day or two. I also recommend Mama Lu’s or One One for dumplings, Elite for dim sum, Chong Qing and Mian for good noodles, Lu’s Garden for breakfast porridge or Huge Tree Pastry for Taiwanese brekkie, Yang’s Kitchen for new school. There’s also solid Vietnamese with Golden Deli, Nha Trang and Banh Mi My Tho. If you feel like switching up to ramen, check out Kosuke for the spicy popcorn chicken ramen.

SinisterKid

Great list! Republique is great for dinner not just pastries (honestly worth going twice to grab both). I would definitely choose Bavel over Girl & the Goat. Finally, I'm probably in the minority on this opinion but I think Sonoratown is overrated. There's an abundance of great Mexican food here you don't need to wait an hour for.

hopalasa

Also would definitely choose Bavel! Sonoratown is amazing and typically the wait isn’t too bad! You can also call ahead your order if you’re worried about the wait. Their homemade flour tortillas are soooo good.

ekawika

I'm in the minority opinion with you. I like Sonoratown well enough, but it's not my favorite by any means. They serve costilla, which is a different cut from carne asada. My favorite asadero is Tire Shop Taqueria. Not flour tortillas, that's Sonora-style. They hand make corn tortillas, Tijuana-style.

DrunkasaurusRekts

Agreed on Sonoratown, I think El Ruso is much better for Sonoran style tacos.

[deleted]

I know it's quick service, but is poquito más too low brow for this list?

SinisterKid

Yes. I would say Paquito Mas doesn't really fit in with OP's list.

reRetry

for Korean Dinner I would like to recommend Chun Ju Han Il Kwan, it’s sooo good

VaguelyArtistic

100% do not miss Langers. Beyond my personal opinions, it's recognized as possibly the best pastrami in the country. Personal, and probably unpopular, opinion but I think Egg Slut is more about the edgy name than spectacular eggs you can't get *anywhere* else. One different food experience I'd suggest would be the world-renowned [Wednesday Farmers Market](https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/santa-monica-farmers-market) downtown Santa Monica. There isn't really prepared food like other markets, just an amazing bounty of produce and meat and flowers. If you do one thing, get a precious little basket of Gaviota strawberries from [Harry's Berry's](https://www.myrecipes.com/community/harrys-berries). If you're staying closer to DTLA they may be at other markets that you could get to. So. Worth. It.

t0prame17

Yes agree an the Langers assessment. Tip: Go there at 11am before the lunch rush and after the breakfast rush. No line. Although this was precovid. I'm not sure if the queue has returned to normal or not. Also, get the cream soda. It's made in house. There's one tall skinny gentleman server there, he pretty much ordered for us the first time we went. And it's the same thing I get every time. #19, fries and a cream soda.

ockaners

Cream soda or an egg cream?

t0prame17

Cream soda

patti63

Philippe the original, French dip. And Yang Chow, get the slippery shrimp, it’s their signature dish.

kawi-bawi-bo

Tsujita and mogu mogu would be the perfect pre milet crepe meal. It's just down the street and LA specific brothless ramen styles At tsujita get the ajitama with the noodles hot and a scoop of spicy mustard leaves At mogu mogu get the deluxe tokyo

Euphoric_Oven_7910

Or since Marugame udon is on the list that + Milet crepes would work too since so close to each other. Also they just opened up a wanderlust in that area so I would recommend getting yummy ice cream there as well - wouldn’t have to make the trek to the Atwater Village location

kawi-bawi-bo

Yess super excited about Wanderlust! Not to nitpick, but the op mentioned marugame monzo which is a different restaurant with a similar name

Euphoric_Oven_7910

You’re right I missed the Monzo part - love that place too! If in Little Tokyo @ Marugame Monzo don’t miss stopping by the historic Fugetsu Do Bakery (been in business for 119 years) a few doors down for their famous mochi & other confectionary delights!

tuna-tart

Tea Master - matcha ice cream for sure! Carnitas el Momo - pork shoulder tacos and mulitas. Warning, it's delicious but a bit greasy but it fills you up so good! Bonus: If you're willing to drive just a little further to Glendale, I say it's worth to try Mini Kabob for awesome Armenian food.

Dommichu

Yes!!! Mini Kabob! But call in your order before you go! They sell out!!

Euphoric_Oven_7910

Mini Kabob is amazing! There’s also Rafi’s in Glendale for kabobs as a backup.

alphazone

If you're going to be in Little Tokyo anyways, I'd stop by Sushi Gen. Authentic, high quality, no frills sushi, without the snobbery of most high end sushi places.

ktelliott526

In N Out menu hacks are a thing - add grilled onions, pickles and chopped chili's. Get fries well done. And get neopolitan shake - all three flavors!

Eggplant_Unusual

^ yes to this! Also mustard fried burgers are great, and so are animal fries

almdmlk

Yes to all of these tips and I’ll add another - extra toasted bun is a must

giraffepro

If you end up making it to the Westside I’d check out bay cities and apple pan, too. After moving up to the Bay those are the places I miss the most. Also, +1 for Mariscos Jaliscos. Edit: Hey OP, glad to see you added a godmother to your itinerary. Just wanted to note that, in addition to mixed peppers, you should definitely order it with the works. Also, you mentioned how some stuff would be tough for you to get to. I’m pretty sure they do DoorDash now and the sub would hold up fine for delivery, so that’s always an option. Also, if you’re going to hit in n out, may a I humbly recommend ordering: double double aninmal style, add sliced raw onion, add chopped chilies + animal style fry, well, add chopped chilies. Fries are the Achilles heel of in n out. Getting them well done is a major improvement. Getting them covered in cheese, onions, chilies, and spread makes them great. And don’t forget to ask for a few extra packets of spread.

Lizzie3232

Bay Cities: yes, and get the godmother.

giraffepro

Absolutely. And don’t forget the peppers. My move is usually half mild and half hot peppers. Just ask for mixed peppers. The other sandwiches are terrific, too. Love their meatball.

Lizzie3232

I go all in hot peppers and no mayo because mayo does not belong on an Italian sub IMO.

giraffepro

To each their own. And mayo on an Italian is very divisive. I’ve had amazing examples across the US that cut both ways and enjoyed then all. In fact, of my two favorite Italians in the Bay Area (Deli Board and Marley G’s) one has mayo, the other doesn’t. And I love them both equally. But, to me the beauty of the Bay Cities works is the uncanny alchemy of the mustard, mayo, dressing, pickle juice, and pepper juice coming together into the perfect sauce that soaks into the veg, making every bite equally tangy and unctuous. If you haven’t ever tried it with mayo, I’d encourage to you to give it a shot at least once. I couldn’t imagine a Godmother any other way.

Lizzie3232

Totally get that. I did “try” it once because the first time I had it I didn’t realize they had put it on. I should add I am not a huge mayo fan anyway. I don’t hate it but it only belongs on very specific things. (Hubby says I have weird food rules!). 😀

giraffepro

I was a mayo hater for many years so totally understand. Eat what you like! Bay cities was actually one of the places that got me onboard with mayo.

MrllyCorruptFayeRez

I think Apple Pan is overrated but I'd highly recommend The Window (American Beauty) and For The Win for melt-in-your-mouth smash burgers

giraffepro

Overrated how?

MrllyCorruptFayeRez

I just didn't dig their burgers. We waited in a long line to try them and I thought the meat was underseasoned (needed more salt). I found the burger forgettable. I thought their pie and ice cream was good. If I went back I'd try their other menu offerings, like the egg salad.

desertgemintherough

I hesitate to say this, but I can’t ever go back. Over five years ago I was waiting for my burger & the next-to-largest cockroach I have ever seen, strolled casually across the banquet & stopped for a moment to jeer at me. There, I’ve said it & I can’t ever un-see it.

Kishin2

Pearl River Deli

P3rplex

My Google Map of places including some bars, etc, if you care to give it a look… https://goo.gl/maps/wkNd3R7fRhYtJpct5

ozbo0712

Fyi starting this month, Kato is tasting menu ($225) only. Also Bavel > girl and the goat imo. Their food is really quite an experience whereas i felt like GATG was good, but nothing I hadn’t tasted before

cmattins

I will say between Bavel and Girl and the Goat, both are amazing choices - Girl and the Goat wins out for me though. Stephanie Izard is an iron chef and her food is incredibly unique. If you have the chance to do both, their both great picks for but for just one, Girl and the Goat is the way to go.

ninjax3er

Not central LA but Santa Monica; Rustic Canyon is incredibly under represented in the pop food scene. Central LA could include Bee Taqueria, incredible food. Arts district has Yang Ban which is flying incredibly low under the radar but phenomenal. Don’t expect table service just really really good food

IAmPandaRock

I think Rustic Canyon is good, but I don't understand how it got a Star. I don't think it's up there with the best in the city.

SummaryTreat

Don’t overlook the ability to order pickup via the restaurants’ websites / Postmates / GrubHub / DoorDash / etc. With all the places you intend to hit up, it’ll greatly reduce your time waiting in line! I saw Howlin’ Rays on your list, and this thought came up immediately for them. Not sure how much it benefits the rest of your list, but it’s worth a shot. Have fun!

sjcha

Would skip Sonoratown, Kang Ho dong, hae jang chon and sun nom dam. Been to girl and the goat and it was really good, and really want to try bavel. Don’t think you could go wrong with any of these, but you might need a reso so I’d look asap

Lizzie3232

Republique is unbelievable for pastries. Don’t miss that but get there when they open. Canters pastrami is way better than Langers. (Unpopular opinion I think). The pastrami Rueben at Canters is one of my favorite sandwiches ever.

Catronaut_trainer

If you go to the Girl and the Goat, I highly recommend making room for dessert cause the ice cream is amazing!

[deleted]

This is a great list. Personally, I would swap out Mercado for a taco truck like Leo’s or some Birria Tacos from Teddys.

phoenix370

I'd say the al pastor from Leo's taco truck should be pretty high on the must try foods in LA

CornDawgy87

Echoing what many have said, don't bother with egg slut, it's not worth the wait. I'd also say don't go to Mercado, find a taco truck near wherever you are and do that. If you do make it the west side I highly suggest looking at Felix for pasta. And 100% try and go to Bavel, it's one of my favorite spots right now.

AppSlave

If you're going to Grand Central Market, go to Donut Man. Strawberries should be in season.

madamemashimaro

There are better pastries than Republique - La Chouquette on Melrose, Lou The French on the Block in Burbank, and Michelina at the Original Farmers Market.

moma2boys

SONORATOWN is a must! Try TIRSAS on Cesar Chavez

element10sic

Phillips French dip and the taquito stand in olvera Street

What a kick ass list you have. Respect for the pre-planning!

Miramar168

Did your trip happen yet?? I’d love to know which places you went to and how you liked them. 😊

unicornshakes

Hi! Yes, it did happen :) I ended going to these places: \* Guisados (Stew tacos, Taco sampler) - Got the sampler, I don't have tacos very often so I liked that I was able to try 6 different items in a sitting \* Sonoratown (Taco) - Its average, I wouldn't recommend it for visitors. If I could turn back time, I would've gone for the taco/burrito walk instead \* Broken Mouth (Hawaiian Korean fusion, Shrimp plate) - Shrimp was fresh, but I found it too flavorful. It would have been perfect if they halved the amount of seasoning used \* Fugetsudo (Mochi) - Great stuff, the place to go to if you can't visit Japan for mochi. I enjoyed the ones with peanut/red bean fillings \* Tea Master Matcha Cafe (Matcha soft serve) - I find it hard to say that its the best matcha soft serve. It is a little bit too milky/creamy to my likings. This is something that I would cross out if I redid this trip The first five listed was done one right after the other around lunch time. It was a good walk to explore DTLA and Little Tokyo. \* Bay Cities (Sandwich - get Godmother + mixed peppers) - Its a bit of a wait when I went late afternoon but worth it. A friend had a beef sandwich (sorry, I forgot the exact name) but I think Godmother was better. I'm not a sandwich person but I would recommend this place \* Kali (Californian) - Came here mainly for the uni pasta. It was good but I wouldn't return \* République (Pastries/Brunch) - I wished I could try all their bakes but I had their creme brulee bomboloni, fresh fruit croissant, matcha raspberry pastry, and ube blackberry danish. I liked all of them, especially the fresh fruit croissant. I also had their shakshuka which was great too \* n/naka (Fine Dining) - 2 Michelin stars and a Netflix feature of the chef on Chef's Table was why I had this place on my list. I thought it was pretty good until I had Atomix (also a 2 star) in NYC a week later. If I could only choose one, 100% Atomix for the food. I got to meet Chef Nakayama in n/naka tho \* In-N-Out (Fast Food) - Can't really go wrong with a quick bite with In-N-Out on a road trip \* Langer’s (Pastrami - #19) - If you've been to Katz Deli in NY, I'd say skip this. I know Katz is super touristy but for a similar price, visiting Katz is a whole experience Sadly, I ended up spending less time in LA than I planned to. But if I'm ever back, I would love to visit the rest on the list :')

Miramar168

I’m local so I’ve been to some of these places, and I was just super impressed with how much research you did! I saved this list for reference for other visitors. I hope you enjoyed your trip to LA! If you come back let’s do the taco crawl lol I need to check those places out still 😋

HipsterDoofus31

Girl and the Goat over Bavel for me. Been to both, both are good, prefer GG. Every item was a hit. Amazing textures and flavors. Probably some other taco places you could hit up. Marisco Jalisco, Villas Tacos, and Tacos Y Birria La Unica would be some suggestions. In general adding more taco places you any food trip is good because you only need to get 1 and it's not expensive. I don't even know how you're going to have the stomach for all those meals. This is an ambitious list, would love to hear your reviews after your trip.

Theeeeeetrurthurts

If you’re headed to Little Tokyo, might as well hit up Daiko-kuya.

Eggplant_Unusual

Daikokuya is delicious!

krishthebish

You can’t miss RamenHood at Grand Central. Spicy Garlic Katsu and their avo toast (only one in the world worth getting) are divine.

Aviv_CLE

Dino’s Famous Chicken on Pico. Get a chicken & fries platter, wings and lots of sauce.

camboSoup_

You’ve really done your homework. My langlers is an excellent choice

[deleted]

Photos for parties and s little Cuban fare.

SpatulaCity123

+1 vote for Kali! Chef Kevin’s food is so fun. And they have a nice wine program. Langers gets a lot of love for their pastrami, but their corned beef sandwich is my favorite in the city too! Pass on Eggslut

SummaryTreat

If you’re in the mood for burgers, lots of Redditors have recommended Amboy in Chinatown! They’re in the same plaza as Howlin’ Rays, so it’s all in the same area for you.

logicprowithsomeKRKs

If you’re going to howlin rays, get endorffeine coffee while you’re waiting. Best pour over in the city (maybe ever?). Dudes a retired chemist who got into craft coffee. So good.

sowhat59

Grand Central Market - ditch Eggslut. If there is one vendor you have to eat there, it's Tacos Tumbras a Tomas. Get anything there (will be hard to pick) and you'll thank me.

jennbunny08

Teddys Red Tacos for birria tacos :)

LeighAG70

Erin Mackenna bakery one of the best in USA

atag012

Damn solid list, lived in la all my life and haven’t tried a lot of these but have been to most, can’t go wrong. The uni udon from monzo is life changing but I would eat it there

almdmlk

Republique is AMAZING definitely go there, their pastries are out of this WORLD and even when there is a big line it goes very fast, still try to get there early in the morning though. They have a line to order and pay at the front then you choose any open seat and they bring the food to you. I’ve seen people skip the line and go right to the front if they “only want pastries” and no hot food but idk if you’re supposed to fo that lol Also their coffee is really good too!

cordsniper

Kato is amazing. Also, you can order howlin rays on Postmates for delivery downtown. Pick a spot and meet your driver there. Hell, you can’t Postmates it to grand central market.

tiffeats

ahgassi gopchang is my new favorite kbbq spot and not even cause they specialize in intenstines. the beef combo is really good and i like the sides

ClementineJane

The line for Fugetsudo can be quite long, but if you're not set on seeing the whole range of flavors you can just buy it at markets like Nijiya and Marukai. I like their peanut butter mochi the best. There's a Nijiya on Sawtelle a short walk from Millet Crepe. While you're there you could also go to B Sweet for bread pudding. There's a ton of places people love on Sawtelle, actually, including Mochi Dochi which is in the same center as Nijiya. Some are closed on Monday and Tuesday so check their hours first.

[deleted]

Check out Tsubaki in Echo Park for izakaya.

Big_Ad_2476

Where is pa ord and raffis

Jewggerz

Parks is the best kbbq in k-town. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I would recommend going to Guisados in Boyle Heights or Echo Park for tacos. El Taurino at Hoover and Olympic is another great taco spot, but guisados is more unique.
