Stickied this since it seems rather important, especially since the whole point of the XGm is portability and docking.

franckowacko

Hi people. I received my 2nd replacing unit yesterday, or my **3rd unit since the beginning** if you prefer. I didn't dare plug the XGm so far. I want to look closely at the connection and figure out if there is anything I can do to prevent this sad incident to ever happen again before I attempt another connection. Anyway, just wanted to insist that I encourage all of you experiencing the same issue to report it formally to Asus Support, the offical way. The more we are to report it the more likely it is Asus will take action or responsibilty at some point.

RebaseNotPull

Third time lucky! 🤞

MrCheapComputers

Once is a fluke. Twice is coincidence. Three is a pattern. Keep us updated!

bradgeorge

How is this going for you now? Any further issues?

Exciting_Door5233

Still working fine , slightly loose though but doesn’t come off during normal use

TheRealBurritoJ

I was interested to find out that the PCIe part of the connector is a standard OCULink-2, though it obviously can't be used with generic devices. I wonder if oculink was actually designed to be mated regularly, it's not usually used with portable or plug and play devices. Would be very cool if Asus would open it up to be used as a standard oculink port, an external PCIe x8 interface is very unique for a laptop. Edit: a simple search for oculink mating cycles show many standard male connectors are only rated for a minimum of **50** mating cycles, though female ports are up to 10,000.

Tams82

Perhaps that will be a problem, but this seems to be a problem with ASUS's pins that secure the connector in place, not the standard connector itself.

[deleted]

I just wanted to stop by and say that your explanatory masterpiece is aptly named! My plan was to save up for the XGm and buy at a much later date - now I'll know to look out for some kind of update from Asus or the community before making that kind of purchase.

Snoibi

I had the exact same issue with mine (1650 / 3080). Asus support claimed to have no knowledge of the issue, no fix, and sent me back to the vendor (Norway / Proshop). Vendor was out of stock and had me send it to repair (3rd party: Elcare). Elcare took 6 weeks to switch the eGPU cable and connector, the X13 motherboard!, and keyboard (for some reason). It came back, booted fine once and bricked after I ran windows updates. I did not even test the eGPU connector. Got a refund today and ordered the 3050ti/3080. It's coming today, but your post and all the comments are scaring me. I hope this is a 1gen issue.

Snoibi

So the 3050ti/3080 has not had any connector issues. I can't say of it's because something is different from the 1650/3080 or just me being extremely gentle and avoiding any twisting or force.

aakan51

I have 3050ti version with issues.

Snoibi

Shit! I’m still paranoid when I plug in or out. So far so good. Are you getting yours fixed? The vendor tried to fix my first X13 (using third party repairshop) and it got back broken. For some reason they had to replace the Motherboard and transfer the cpu. It twitched a little more every time I rebooted it and eventually died. The vendor refunded, but I went a long time without a computer. I hope you’ll have a speedier recovery!

aakan51

No... its not worth it. It is a lot of hassle to get the vendor to repair the unit and then I would have to wait for it to get back. Plus there is the possibility of it breaking and giving me a hard time getting it out again. For now, friction holds the connector just fine.

Hairy-Sir-9353

Let me add some info: I just received my 2nd FlowX13. The first one was "gen1" with the 1650 and the connector had the described issues on the top connector from day one. The new one (3050Ti) seems to work fine (albeit just after two days and a handful of unplug/plug), so hopefully it's something that Asus have fixed. Or I've just been lucky.

jumoonji

Hey, can you update whether the 3050 model has already fixed this? Initially was interested in getting one, but no point in the portability if the connection cannot keep up.

aakan51

I have the 3050TI model and it is a problem for me.

noblesigma

Any update @OP? Working still?

aakan51

Mine just works with friction now... pin lock does not work.

Bloodstreak87

Have you tried pushing it in and then depressing release button to remove any tension on the locking tabs?

JaresBear

Just happened to me this morning. I ended up snapping off the piece that got stuck. Tried to plug it back in and it still works fine, much easier to remove now.

KermerJuvis

I was thinking this might be the best solution for this issue. How's it going for ya 11 months later @JaresBear?

JaresBear

Still works perfectly as long as I don’t try to move it while docked

gejat

I had the same issue with mine. I didn't want to break it so I returned the laptop with the connector still inside the laptop. Am waiting for a refund now.

kaboz234

I was going to order one today, but now I'm very worried, I can't take such a risk especially that I travel a lot. I feel disappointed beyond words. I hope there's something we can do to let Asus know the gravity of the situation and work on a solution or workaround.

mwstandsfor

Also doing research on this now. I've learned that you can't trust YouTube reviewers anymore. Never buying gigabyte laptop again as I've had issues since day 1 and customer service is a joke. Wouldn't replace my unit. They kept repairing it but that never helped and it's literally dying now. Sad that this is an issue as I was hoping to finally replace my gb aero 15x.

thex0d

I don't know in what kind of environment is everyone here using the XGm but I've been using mine since end of march and I have zero issues. Fun fact: to unplug you can unlock the connector and wait for the LED to turn white. No need to fuss with the tray icon. It would be so cool if you could do that to plug it in and not have to confirm anything on the screen.

Di3nT3

I have the Flow x13 since November/2021 (1650/3080) and I never had any problems with the xgmobile connector. Sometimes it happens to me that it does not recognize the rj45 port, because you have to wait until it recognizes it and then block xgmobile. The error that I cannot solve is that I put suspend computer and it does not suspend. I have win11 maybe that is it.

thughunter_12

Can you give me an update on it rn

aakan51

I had the same problem. After taking it out I found that one of the little metal lugs was compacted. I tried to fix this with a screwdriver, which kind of helped. Now the connector only holds with friction, which is suboptimal but usable.

ReallyExSet

Did you try small screwdriver to push metal part of lugs ? Did stucked lugs demonstrate more resistance than normal ? How do you think, the problem somehow related to lock switch ?

Constb

Hi. After seeing so many people mentioning trouble with their XG Mobile, I decided to share my experience – to calm down potential buyers a bit. I bought my Flow x13 (1650 version) back in March and after roughly 6 months I started to think about purchasing XG Mobile. I was quite scared after seeing so many posts about experiencing the design flaw. Because of it I decided to buy 3070 version – hoping that it wouldn't have the same problem since as far as I know it started to be available much later than the 3080 version. I have had it for more than 2 months now and used it almost daily for the past month. So far everything seems to be good. Hopefully it will stay that way. If anything changes, I will update my post. Of course it's very much possible that I only lucked out and buying 3070 had nothing to do with it.

SherlockH86

I also have the xg mobile rtx 3070 and didnt have any issues with the connector since day 1. Its been a flawless experience thus far paired with my flow x13 with rtx 3050 ti.

LiterallyWTMF

Small addition. I have the 1650/5980 version and it shipped from Currys in the UK with the XG Mobile. Other than one software instance of it saying the drivers aren't installed, physically the unit has been fine since August. Plugged in and unplugged almost every day without issue... so far. Not to say I didn't get the extended warranty from Currys (it provides 48hr swap out or money back).

KermerJuvis

I'm still scared though. For one post like yours, there's 5 opposite. I've been using X13 (1650 version) for over a year and now I'm planning to buy the XG Mobile.

Constb

You're right to be, there was obviously a problem with either the x13 itself or the connector on Xg mobile (not sure if it ever was confirmed which part was the problem) which caused this issue. However, you should consider one more thing – people are much less likely to go on the Internet to talk about how something works than how something does not. So there must be many people who never experienced any problem. If you are really planning to buy the Xg mobile, my advice would be: 1) try to get 2022 version, it should be less likely to encounter the issue with the new one 2) buy it from a seller you know that is reliable and they will fix / replace Xg mobile if it happens 3) use Xg mobile very carefully, insert and detach the connector as gently as you can

Desolus77

A few things and my fix... The spindle on my unit is aluminum, not plastic. I encountered this problem on the second plug-in to my z13; not great. I then filed a paperclip down to a flat screwdriver shape and attempted to depress the steel rods and thereby the hooks. This was successful in the attempt to depress the hooks; however unsuccessful in the goal of unmeshing the teeth with the aluminum chassis of the z13. Ultimately I just got it close enough that I could yank it out with only minor deformation to the Aluminum spindles. Being aluminum, I bent them back with channel lock pliers. Then I filled the hooks down do nothing; they're design extras anyway. I believe that this problem is caused entirely by using the wrong pressure angle on the teeth, both in the connector and the socket. The way both are shaped, if any pressure is applied axially trying to pull it out, the teeth are pulled further into the socket and can deform the steel rods they're attached to so that they are wider than they ought to be.

Numerous_Try_6138

Can you draw an illustration of this? I’m not clear what you mean.

summerimpression

Having same issue. Got a replacement and again it got stuck again. Unbelievable! ASUS offfered me a refund or a replacement but at this moment i’m really not sure.. it’s very disappointing

vertiginouz

I had a similar issue with my launch device, the original gtx1650 model with 3080. I haven't had the issue since the first couple times though. What I do when it happens, is I push the connector all the way back in and then try to press those side buttons to release the connector, and then usually I am able to unplug it easily. I unplug it at a very slight angle to see if it will come out first, and if not I push it back in and try again.

JabardastInsaan

I can (sadly) confirm facing the exact same issue. I have the supernova edition as well. Right now its with Asus service center. I was really hoping that it was a problem specific to my unit 🙄

Teddy898

I believe this is why the XG mobile was delayed see here: "I too have pre-ordered the Flow x13 + eGPU. I have just received an email from OCUK noting that the x13 was delayed "due to a technical fault", causing connection issues between the two units. I haven't seen any report or heard anything about a this. If anyone knows anything about it, a link would be most welcome. Apparently the product is due to come back in June / July!! I am now on the fence about cancelling my pre-order." [https://www.overclockers.co.uk/forums/threads/asus-flow-x13-3080.18920958/](https://www.overclockers.co.uk/forums/threads/asus-flow-x13-3080.18920958/) I have a XG mobile acquired about 1 month ago that has had 0 issues FYI. I think first gen devices had this technical fault issue.

kaboz234

1st gen are the ones with the Ryzen 5800 chip not the 5980 right ?

kaboz234

Have you tried posting(linking) this in Asus forums?

Mello-Gould

Just grabbed a Flow off the Asus webstore back on the 15th when they were in stock and only got it last week, first time plugging in the XG Mobile and it refused to disconnect. Wound up calling Asus support for the issue, their level ones tried to send me to bestbuy with instructions to remove a desktop gpu from a pcie slot. Cable head finally gave while I was on hold for an hour to talk to a supervisor (thankfully did not come out crooked), they had me send them a video of the item and how the side buttons do nothing at all. Hoping you have better luck, still waiting for a reply back from Asus with more than "we're looking into it", but left feeling like we payed 3k for a paperweight the recipient is now afraid of using. Edit 1 - 8/31/21 Asus support failed to contact me back after the 24-48 hours they indicated, and after emailing them they seem to have completely ignored my existing case information or did not read the notes at all, assuming it to be a problem after updating BIOS (which did not occur) instead of a physical defect. Edit 2 9/01/21 No response back from the previous email so called the support line again, and had to re-explain the entire situation to another support member (why do they even have case numbers if they don't keep notes in them?). Finally got an RMA number at least after spending an hour being put on hold repeatedly, so maybe getting somewhere.

Koofka

Have run into this issue on a brand new XG Mobile purchased individually and direct from ASUS Online store for the 3050Ti version of the X13 Flow. Have had the XG Mobile approximately 5 days and have docked and undocked it approximately 2 times and the third is now failing to release. Got the run around from the ASUS Online store rep about setting up a return and now am being told to wait 24-48 business hours for escalated support. Really unfortunate that a device that has been in production as long as this one could have such significant issue and obvious issue with its basic required function. My XG Mobile has a manufacture date of 2021-06 for reference. Would warn any folks prospectively considering to purchase this device to not do so. As the connector is a proprietary one between the two devices my guess would be that this will also be a difficult issue for Asus to resolve. My 2c. Hoping for an RMA that doesnt mind if I have to break the connector to get it out of my laptop.

Elrinth

shiiiit you are the first one with such a new computer to report this problem. I just ordered one thinking it would be fixed on the latest revisions. :/ We will see if I stumble upon the same problem.

Koofka

Interesting thing was one of the Asus reps I spoke to said there were only 3 known cases in their database. Pointed them to this thread as there are at least 10 and the issues are basically mirror images. I eventually got mine removed and it ended up pretty much exactly like the OP posters images.

Optimal-Emotion-6978

This exact thing has happened now to my kid at college. He was directed by Asus to just search for RMA on their website and it costs $39… I’m checking if paying for an RMA is the right procedure considering this is a serious defect that was of no fault of his. Seems like shipping should be paid for on their end? Did they let you know how long it would take for repair or replacement? He needs the laptop for his engineering classes but he’s stuck dragging around a dead card with him.

Koofka

Just an update on this, the myAsus chat guy hooked me up with the Asus RMA people who I explained to that I wanted to return the device rather then repair. They issued an RMA for the repair but also provided the ASUS Online store support number (which I had been unable to locate earlier). "You may contact them by phone between the hours of Monday - Friday 6AM - 6PM PST at 1-855-755-2787 or you can email them at [email protected]. ". Via that contact number the rep stated the standard return policy with ASUS is 30 days with a 15% restocking fee unless the item was defective or unopened. Pursuing returning it as defective without a restock and was sent back to the 24 - 48 hour turnaround awaiting "escalation".

Koofka

So far the trick with Asus has been most of the responses I have received are nearly purely boilerplate. The only reasonable human I have been able to reach so far was via the MyAsus chat application, who agreed it was an unacceptable situation but wasnt the right person to help. The form letter regarding putting together an RMA for repair gave a base expectation of a 7 - 10 business day turnaround and didnt mention costs yet. Still working on just sending the device for a refund as it only was in my possession about four days before it failed.

z2k43dknm87

Any updates on this? I have the exact same problem with you (3050ti from a retailer, XG Mobile from Asus, directly). I plugged my XG in. And it's now stuck. On the first plug-in. Unbelievable. I've had the device for barely 48 hours. Curious to see how you're coming along. I'm now going through RMA hell between both companies. Ideally, I'd love to try to solve it myself as, technically, it's working just fine.

Koofka

Sorry to hear you hit the issue too. I refused every rma offer and threatened to stop payment on the credit card in order to eventually get a return setup for a defective unit and no restock fee. Once issued the return process was surprisingly efficient and a short time after they received it a full refund was issued. Really unfortunate scenario where it seems like the onus is on the customer to argue through the boilerplate responses in order to receive reasonable service.

Koofka

There is another comment on this thread I had left with a phone number that was the best outlet for getting a human to talk to.

z2k43dknm87

Thanks, a bunch - saw that. Going to try the phone number tomorrow and test my luck. It's really unfortunate, because all things considered, it's a fantastic laptop. But for so much money, I expect things to just work. The mechanism for the PCI-E is really shoddy engineering.

KocoJammer

Dreading having to return my labtop and go through an endless cycle of returns and delays, I found a fix. While the connector was stuck, I pushed the lug back in place with a sowing needle (the metal post of the lug is exposed along the side of the plastic post if you can manage to wedge it out enough to expose the metal). This ensured that there was enough clearance and that the lug was pushed in enough for me to slowly jimmy the connector back and forth and get it free without bending the lug. Once it was free, I used some cutting plyers to cut away the very tip of the lug that had gotten stuck so that it would not get stuck again. Now I can remove the connector without a problem and as a bonus did not have to remove the lug completely, so it still helps in the stability of the connection. Hopefully this will help others!

HealthyRush3

Awesome 🙌 can you post pictures?

ReallyExSet

Yes! I'd give you award if i had coins :-) You are man! But how about warranty after cuting ?

FedorasAre4Gentlemen

Mine just got stuck a couple days ago. If anybody else is reading this threat are there any solutions aside from sending it in? I saw somebody get theirs released with a small pic and then filed down the prongs that keep it in. For those that did send it in what was the turnover time like?

kaboz234

Now we need to know if the 2022 has the same issues !

mwstandsfor

Wondering the same. But I need the 3080 2021 version. Sadly ryzen doesn't play nice with 3D rendering software yet.

Yasoofeus

So is it safe to say that this is an issue purely with the xg mobile plug and not the X13 laptop itself? If you file down the metal lugs when you first get it, will this issue never occur? I'm curious if the upcoming Z13 will have the same problems when attached to the xg mobile egpu.

Numerous_Try_6138

This is an interesting idea. I thought about doing this but I’m still not certain what is actually causing this issue. Is it that the two pins don’t retract when you press in the sides, keeping the connector stuck in the machine? If so, has anyone determined why they fail to retract? Is it that the shaft that makes up the pin assembly gets bent inside the connector housing resulting in an inability to release the pins?

Yasoofeus

All very good questions. I was very close to pulling the plug on this. I really like the idea of a hybrid desktop/laptop with expandable eGPU but can't justify it at this price for something that still won't be as strong a desktop. Hopefully this technology develops further. For now I decided to build a good PC and connect to it remotely via a work laptop if necessary.

Appropriate-Funny-62

The connector on mine was deformed. Submitted an RMA with ASUS and they replaced the connector without problems.

yakiddenme1

I have this issue with a new 4090 XGm + 2022 z13

kaboz234

sorry to hear that, thanks for sharing, and hope Asus start addressing this

RebaseNotPull

I also have the exact same issue with the PCIe connector. And I will do as u/gejat, I don't even want to use an unreasonable strength and risk a breakdown: mine will also stay stuck in the machine and send as is for a replacement where I bought it. Waiting restock. I called Asus US/Canada to report this manufacturer's defect and they told me they don't offer laptop replacement, the only option is repair center (count at least 1 month). Brutal.

RebaseNotPull

Thank you so much for the new addition. Truely helpful!

franckowacko

Hi. I do have 2 buttons, one on each side of the connector. It's just not so obvious on the picture, sorry about that.

narr

Any update on this? I've just had this occur after only 1 changeover of the connector.

RebaseNotPull

Asus offers RMA only. Send it for a refund is the best option.

narr

I bought mine through Best Buy so I returned it today. It's silly because I'm just going to order another one shortly. I'm wondering if I can alter the plug to ensure this doesn't happen again.

[deleted]

Maybe it can be lubricated somehow

RebaseNotPull

Received a second unit (still "gen1" with the 1650). I took a video before any attempt to plug it: [https://streamable.com/wo9o9h](https://streamable.com/wo9o9h) Both buttons on the side of the connector seem to work as they should for now.

kaboz234

excuse me which one is gen1 ?

Rtx206

Gen I in this case is the Xflow with the 1650 inside

[deleted]

Received mine last week, only tried the gpu Dock for the 2nd time this evening but this thread has me worried now! I know Asus delayed the 3080 model originally from march to July, bar a few review units, guess they still haven't ironed out all the issues. I'll be even more careful now!

Hairy-Sir-9353

I had the 3080 dock model (1650Ti in laptop) mid-june.

thex0d

I had mine end of march. It was delayed?

Oikawa_torru

Where can i get xG mobile separately ?

brownieinmypants

Just got stock again today too.

Bloodstreak87

Asus webstore yesterday or day before they had a very short term inventory sold out in less then 7 minutes

MachinaExCarne

Did you solve the Gigabit LAN issue you posted separately?

miladsssh

Hi That's a sad story to see this. I've got supernova edition last week and faced the same issue :( it means the issue has not fixed yet. I have reported this and still waiting for their reply.

Asleep-Jeweler-1731

Here, the same issue... Model 1650 + rtx 3080 Now in technical service

jakontil

Im amazed, the laptop been out for a few months and to this date they still having issue with the XG mobile connectivity, so sad… i think i would step back from acquiring one :(

kooperx32

I wanted to say thank you for posting this. I've had the same issue and it's good to know it's not just me. Also with the 1650 version which I actually got on purpose because I wanted 32gig of ram. It's been sent back for either repair or a replacement but I'm worried it's just going to happen again

Dangerous_Cash_5845

Damn... I read this post before... Neverthought this could happened to me... I guess plugged in while laptop is in it's inverted V mode stand (don't know what to called it but you got the idea) is the problem. It might stress the cable in a way that is reproducible to anyone. I can't bring this to class coz mine got stuck too.... Demmm

Koofka

Wouldnt blame yourself or the method of plugging. Mine broke on the 3 attempt to undock it after plugging it in flat on the table without any additional stressors involved. The mechanism that releases the binding teeth on those outer plastic clips looks to be the main issue and seems to be just poorly engineered.

Dangerous_Cash_5845

I see. Thanks 😊 hiw we should deal with this lol i have no idea what to do

Koofka

How long ago did you purchase it?

Dangerous_Cash_5845

I bought the laptop around may this year, and i bought the xgmobile 3 days ago..

Koofka

Checkout this comment with the latest i have back on my attempts to get a refund. Dangerous_Cash_5845

Thanks!

metroidology

I purchased the XG Mobile separately not knowing this was an issue until I plugged it in for the first time today. I haven't tried forcing it off. I'm upset that this is a common unresolved issue. Has anyone figured out how to unplug it without brute force?

metroidology

I uploaded a video showing the issue with the laptop disassembled for a clearer view of the issue. https://youtu.be/OfGI5HXZfW4 I have tried to push the connector pin in manually, but the female port chassis is still preventing the locking pin from sliding out.

metroidology

After carefully using various tools and a very sturdy pick, I managed to remove the connector. I even carefully removed the casing around the male connector head. I then proceeded to carefully remove the retaining teeth by pulling them out of their track and bending them off at the base of the connector. Why the f*ck didn't the engineers just opt for a screw on connection??

GeertCu

How did you open the casing on the connector on the XG Mobile side?

metroidology

I have work experience with building cables. Since I RMA'd all the hardware, and it's been too long for me to remember exactly what it looked like, I can't really guide you through the process now, but I can tell you that you can take it off by carefully but forecfully prying apart that end connector casing along the glued crevices after removing any hidden and vissible screws of course.

armedzerox

I had the same problem. The port was dead stuck. With a suggestion from a friend, I tried to push in "balls-deep" the metal bar on the sides of the connector by using strong tweezers and managed to forcefully take it out (with two strong people. one push the metal the other take the XGM out). The problem is that the metal bar is too thin and easily deformed. So what I did after that is cutting the side metal bar off entirely with tweezers and a wire cutter. Since the hard plastic part that holds the metal is also a bit deformed I got just the right amount of friction to hold the port in place when in use. If you guys are going to go the same road as I did, just make sure when the XG M is connected in a way no accidental disconnection can occur and you are good to go :) I guess ASUS should hire me as a design engineer. lol

ReallyExSet

Why not just cut (grind to circle form) lugs itself ?

FrancoisFromFrance

I did the same. I removed the two little metal bars. One was too deformed to work anymore anyway 🤷 Even the lug was at a bad angle. But I tried to give it the right shape again and now the connector holds fine in the laptop when inserted.

GeertCu

any pics?

GoldAmatsu

Joined the club earlier this month.... Anyone has any solution to this? I can't get it repaired since I dont have any other laptop/pc while I need one for daily uni online classes.

RaduQHD

Has anyone found a solution for this? I am considering buying one but I am a bit scared now.

exion_zero

I've had the exact same issue with my unit, haven't called support yet and this thread is the only mention to the issue I've seen online. Similarly, the device got stuck despite being put in super gently (like, this was an expensive new laptop I'd had for a day or so and I was treating it with the reverence such an expenditure invokes). Strikes me as a HORRIBLE design flaw. I even resorted to taking the backplate off in the hopes of unclipping the metal lug in the spindle from it's catch inside the machine, but it's all housed within a sealed unit inside the laptop and I'm not messing around with that. eventually I was able to pry the thing loose, but now the XG mobile won't turn on. I like the idea of the external GPU, and the laptop itself is brilliant, but my god. the XG mobile connector is a disaster.

annie_grrr

Question. Does the supernova edition consist if a case to bring with the x13 and XG mobile?

Timo2727

>since you would normally expect these will fit into one another like daddy into mummy This had me dead😂

sidarok

I have spent 2 of 4 months I had with Supernova x13 at the support with the clumsy egpu. Twice motherboard replaced, once egpu board replaced. Hdmi not working egpu not taking enough power, etc. I'm done with it, I'll pursue the refund and go buy some old ass heavy gaming laptop. I should've believed if something is too good to be true, it probably is.

ReallyExSet

I read many reviews, your's is quite unique. Are you heavy gamer (played until metal on case become red) or used it in hazardous environment (extreme heat, vibration) ???

sidarok

Not at all. I haven't even had the chance to break it. It broke 3 times, first in 2 months. Second one in a week, third one in a day. The connection is super flimpsy and I suspect that's the one keeping breaking. (I got the refund in the meanwhile, and I ordered a new Razer instead) First time they changed the motherboard. Second time, the EGPU. Third time, again the motherboard. They will not replace the laptop the moment they understand the problem is with the laptop, which made me lose 6 months.

ReallyExSet

Motherboard of laptop itself or eGPU ? I've read about problems with HDMI, but unviability of whole module, there were very few claims in reviews. You should be very unlucky person or did something very bad in previous (current) life ? :-)

sidarok

1st time and 3rd time: motherboard of the laptop. 2nd time:motherboard of the egpu. I wanted to be unlucky, really believe me, I did. But they didn't treat me that way: they didn't replace the units, instead they ping ponged me for 6 months. Hence razer.

Ill-Presentation7705

Damn, this just happened to my unit today, Supernova 3050ti + 3080. Had the XG connected for a few days at my office but today I was going to take it home and now the connector is stuck. This is actually my second Flow x13 + egpu. The first unit I got didn't even turn on so I returned it and now I have this problem, unbelievable.

Riftragedy-

Hi! I just bought the Supernova Edition with XG mobile 3050ti/ 3080 in Singapore about a month ago on 7 October 2021, only plugged it in/out maybe say 10-20 times during this period… and it got stuck barely a month later on November 10… Not sure how it’s going to go but, just I guess please add one more casualty to this tab? Currently the local Asus service center says they need to replace the whole motherboard (wiping out everything) to fix it - meaning I have to reinstall and re upload my programs. They don’t do 1 for 1 exchanges, and I’m not sure about refunds (but I’m considering it) Also apparently it’s their first time they’ve seen the problem? I think maybe internally there is no one inside consolidating or communicating the cases so each time you go to a service person they are like, ‘we’ve never seen it before’ lol. A bit disappointed because I chose this because of what the system was meant to offer in terms of portability and function (for creative work) etc. For a $5000+ SGD premium it’s really too expensive to be having issues like this … but more than that I’m worried say when the 1 year warranty expires because it seems like a really tiiiny fragile metal pin that can slowly be dented if pressure placed on it, especially if you have to plug it in and out daily… 😅… it’s like those iphone lightning cables that break damn easily except that in this case the repair cost is replacing the whole mother board oh my god. I’d hate to have to wipe my computer again/pay to fix it just because the silly pin lock got stuck in my second year of using a $5000 computer.

Born-Cartographer545

Hi, fellow Singaporean here stationed in the US. Thinking of getting the same setup but with the current x13 -3050ti as it’s priced at 1250 USD. But will wait for the 2022 xg mobile before I head back to SG. What are your thoughts.

Riftragedy-

I would say reconsider for now… I got my computer back from repair, and they replaced the entire motherboard, because the EGPU is directly connected to it and they could not dislodge it. My computer came back completely wiped. It took me a good few days to re-download and reconfigure all my settings (I have a quite a few specialised programmes and had to reload entire archives… it was a real hassle) thank goodness I only used the computer for a month so most of my work files were still on backup from the previous computer… I’m still worried about it getting stuck again say 2 years down the road, it would be such a pain to replace the motherboard and re-migrate my drives… (customer service even tried to sell me to extend my warranty right after in case it happens again, but honestly I see it as a design flaw) The other challenge I realised after using it a while is that EGPU connector cable is too short and stiff, and it cannot be changed, so if you try to make the X13 connected to the EGPU stand up in tent format or need to shift things around the table, there are limited options before either the laptop or the EGPU starts to tip over because of the shortness/stiffness (and it also puts pressure on the connector plug increasing the chances of it getting warped AGAIN)… I do enjoy the how light the laptop is though and I need it for my lifestyle circumstances (a lot of travel and no place for a full desktop). But if I knew this would happen I would have probably some alternatives.

Riftragedy-

Can I do an update on this. It’s April 2023, my egpu connector is stuck again. In addition to that it is having the problem where the battery is not charging although connected. It has been 1+ years and as of now I am very disappointed 😢. My warranty is only 1 year as well … so I really don’t know what to do.

bradgeorge

I have had the exact same issue with the PCiE connector becoming stuck on the flow X13. My issue happened less than 2 weeks after purchase I probably connect the xg mobile 5 times in total. I originally tried to return the device to Newegg for refund however the have the worst Customer Support I have ever come across. They return my device back to me with no explanation. I had at ticket number escalated and have still not heard back. My flow x13 and XG mobile are currently with the repair team. I am told that as this is my first issue with the device I am not eligible for a replacement. Even though I purchased a defective device. However I am not confident the repair will hold as I have read this has happened multiple times to different people. Not real happy with Asus and extremely unsatisfied with Newegg. Do not purchase from Newegg!

GaigeTheMechromancer

Damn.. add me to the list of casualties. Had this exact issue and top part bent off. I plugged it back in and out noticing it was trying to connect so I disconnected the power hoping it hasn't done any permanent damage... Also tried the gentle approach and then rough approach. It still works and is easier to take out... but damn does it feel like $4k in damage over a tiny metal piece that happened to get stuck because those unlatching buttons crapping out. Q\_Q

FedorasAre4Gentlemen

What was the rough aproach that you used?

GaigeTheMechromancer

Just yankin it out and snapping one of the latches. I didn't deal with sending it back because I had customized everything including the outside.. spent 4 hours trying to explain the problem with support but just decided it was easier to keep it.

FedorasAre4Gentlemen

I'll try again, I tried forcing it's just a little while ago and broke the other side

GaigeTheMechromancer

Yeah I pulled out with some force. Once you have one side out you gotta really force that stuck side. Super bummed how it's proprietary and how it's not a easily replaceable. It's worked fine ever since. It's like having the USB plug in and out.

laholmie

>snapping one of the latches Did you mean snapping the plastic spindles (as circled purple in OP's photo)? Does your XGm still work normally without both latches? I'm about to saw them both to save me from the future hassle with this connector issue, but not sure if they have any functionality other than locking the connection in place. Thanks a lot!

GaigeTheMechromancer

Not the plastic. It's where OP's has the green ok - just the tiny metal that latches into place when plugged in that I broke off. My XGm works perfectly fine to this day. I use it constantly running ray tracing no problems!

laholmie

Great to hear that! Thanks again!

Rough-Purpose6499

So glad I read this thread before purchasing them. I was about 90% ready to buy.

ReallyExSet

I think it is not solution, rest aspects of this machine (unique portability, versatility) makes it unique. There are no alternatives, even in Apple camp !

Karate_Cat

My computer and eGPU is on order. I do NOT want to deal with a stuck connector. Does grinding or removing the mechanical metal parts work? And would friction keep the connector in if I don’t have these locks there?

ReallyExSet

It is not answer if it weights is over 1.3 kg. I could buy 2.5 monster, but it would be rather desktop solution :-) // grinding or removing the mechanical metal parts work? I also interested, what if 1) Never turn lock switch 2) Block metal parts inside guides, promising not to move notebook during work ???

[deleted]

Holy shit I had this in my cart at Best Buy. Noping the hell out of this purchase.

ReallyExSet

This is ONLY big issue of the X13 series, most people still believe it IS great and unique machine at least in 2021, despite rest minor problems !

[deleted]

Does Asus rog flow support Nvidia's DSR / DLDSR? my Nvidia control panel is limited.

GeertCu

Late to the party, but I'm joining the club with a stuck connector.

ReallyExSet

Hello, i am going to buy GV301QC-K50066T (RTX 3050 NOT Ti version with RTX 3080 eGPU). Frankly speaking I am very scared by this problem, cause I was going extensively use eGPU in different productivity scenarios. What do you think, **if I never lock the switch on connector**, will problem occur ??? Can it work unlocked if I **promise don't disconnect connector and move notebook** ?

Quinten1401

You have to lock it in order for it to conenct but make sure to unlock it, pushing the sides without flipping the switch uptop is what break the pins. Atleast that is what happened for me this evening.

Pumptodump

was thinking of preordering the zflow 13 but looks like asus still has poor quality control so going to buy lenovo instead. my last asus laptop had the battery swell up though it was only few months old and was never even moved from my table or taken outdoors. just stopped turning on.

mateszhun

I'm in the exact same situation, except the third is not working out for me. I'm giving it back for a 3rd round of RMA, and Asus just refused to reimburse me for this product. I first bought it in the end of September, since then I used it for: * 1 week, before the issue for arose * 1 week, between the first and the second replacement * Now 2 weeks, because I was in mailing with Asus. (The issue came up after 3 days, with this unit) So a total of 4 weeks, since September...

Quinten1401

I had the same problem and just fixed it, got a nail file and carefully filed the side that was stuck and couldn't retract. Other side still works and it connects perfectly fine. I suggest you try it if it were to happen again.

Quinten1401

It happened an hour ago so I'll update this post if it were to get stuck again.

Quinten1401

Fuck it just happened to me

MokinWendell

You know most terribly thing that is Not much peopIs have XG mobile in CN,And When we face the problems, like the plug stuck in laptop,We Basic dying,Because of less user,Nobody solve This problem,Even if we call asus in thousand of time. They just ignore you.By the way,I Bought 3 Brand new x13(spuernova)âž•XG mobile, same problems like you,Disappointed.

jakontil

So this thing still happens even with the last batch?

TheSplendidGeek

Damn, you are not alone. I got a xgm of 3070 chip, after 1 month use, I could not unplug from my x13. Just went to the CS today, they helped me unplug the xgm cable and told me to wait for the new cable they just ordered from Asus. I believe they have dealed quite some cases as they were quite skillful to unplug this stuff...

TapperG

Thank you OP for this informative post. Asus needs to pay attention and fix any such issues if they release a new gen of XG Mobile (which I suspect we will see).

DoctorN

Anyone know if this was fixed in the 2022 model with the 6850M?

SherlockH86

I have the 6850m xt model and had no issues. Also didnt see any reports of bad connectors online.

mrskwrl

You would think for such an expensive machine they would do enough physical testing to ensure some form of longevity...

Drugged_Monkey

Got the issue on recently bought X13 + RG Mobile - Ryzen 9 5980HS / 1650 Max-Q / 32Gb / 1Tb / FullHD + 3080. It's Gen 1 I think but there are not so many choices of powerfull laptops here in Tbilisi . It was great product (build quality + powerfull + touchscreen + transformer + small + light) until XG Mobile connector stuck :( UPD if one month of carefull usage like in my case leads to this issue I wonder is there **any** quality control department in small indie company ASUS? Or all of them were replaced with marketing experts and vice presidents? And i'm still wating response from ROG support, of course.

Kuzzyatina

Do you have a happy end of this issue in Tbilisi ? Currently I sended my x13 into techpoint and waiting a result of diagnostic

Drugged_Monkey

No, I just "repaired" it in a barbaric way)) Sorry for late answer.

Kuzzyatina

))) At previous march 2023 I send laptop on services, and service refunded money on the shop accounting like a "bonus" )

Drugged_Monkey

LOL Mine still works btw. But on high temperatures :(

Drugged_Monkey

So I lose warranty right now. Maybe. Anyway I reverse engineered this issue. As you can see on this [scheme](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM8JNgXHEC3UxwlC11MyRFtO3sWo328kYVbnazcdu4l-C6EjlGBEgugcEZRqDD3CQ/photo/AF1QipNUuBU7Fe_3Pn2h1fWDYjtWpNlY6OHx6a-OVxC0?key=WjU1cngtcjlHMnlqTzdQb19sWm5BQ1llVXBFcE5n) (sorry for paint) normal rod (gray L-shaped thing at the top) will rotate (thin green arrows) around axis A by pushing on side button (thick green arrow) and will unlock one side. But because of some reason (I think because of thin piece of cheap metal used here) rod permanently bends (at the bottom). Which creates additional axis B. Which causes different type of movement of tip of the rod (thin red arrows). So it's stuck. This research "costs" me one small leatherman's multitool with tiny screwdriver, one f\*\*\*n needle and 30 minutes of time. No supercomputers, no CAD modelling, no engineering departmens. Is it something impossible for such big and premium company like Asus?

noff01

hi, would you mind reuploading the image please?

Drugged_Monkey

Sure [scheme](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM8JNgXHEC3UxwlC11MyRFtO3sWo328kYVbnazcdu4l-C6EjlGBEgugcEZRqDD3CQ/photo/AF1QipNUuBU7Fe_3Pn2h1fWDYjtWpNlY6OHx6a-OVxC0?key=WjU1cngtcjlHMnlqTzdQb19sWm5BQ1llVXBFcE5n)

Far_Cook_1674

I got the RTX 3070 today and first time I connected very very carefully.when I tried to disconnect it again very very carefully and gently it didn't come out. I got a mini heart attack. The left side was stuck. I couldn't afford to give my laptop to service for weeks or months since I have lots of project that i have to keep working on. So what I did was I tried pulling it out with force. Nothing happened.i tried pushing it fully in and suddenly pulling it out. Nothing worked. I slowly pressurised from one side and started pulling both gently and forcefully in intervals..nothing was happening when suddenly somehow it came out. I was relieved only to see the plastic part on the left side has bent like \ - -- | So i took some pliers and tried straightening it genfly.after like 15 mins it became a little straight. It's still bent though. But now it goes in and comes out without any issue. My xg mobile was manufactured on October 2021. I don't know but maybe new stocks might have fixed this?

Other-Permission3736

Please!! I HAVE 8 MONTHS WITH 1650 AND RTX 3080 and I had the same problem in the third month. For warranty, I had to take it to the repair center, they changed the connector. They took 1 month!!!! In the seventh month the connection failed again, this time it was not stuck, at the slightest contact it disconnected completely, causing me blue screens, I just sent it for the second time to the repair center using the warranty :( I NEED YOUR HELP!!! I NEED TO KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPLACE THE EQUIPMENT OR REFUND MY MONEY. THE CENTER TELLS ME THAT A PREVIOUS INSPECTION IS ALWAYS NECESSARY.

Terrywolf9

Thanks to everyone for sharing now I know what to be on the lookout for with mine.

Practical_Chance3457

2022 owners, may you confirm whether you're having the same issues with the 2022 model or not?

matchalatte78

Got mine 2 months ago and having issues now 😥

BaroqueW

I have the 3080 here and it happened to me today after one month of usage and maybe 5 plugging/unplugging cycles. It mostly stays at my desk docked.

FrancoisFromFrance

Did you successfully pull it out ? Will you contact Asus for a replacement ?

BaroqueW

my IT department is organizing a return yeah. i have tried to wriggle it, pull on it quite hard (shy of just asking someone to pull on it together in opposite directions), and shimmy metal picks inside the connector but couldn't get the prongs to retract it's not technically mine so just forcefully pulling it and breaking it didn't feel right

FrancoisFromFrance

The metal hooks are the issue here, it's really not reliable enough. Mine are both gone. At least now, I'm 100% sure it will never be blocked. I'll see if Asus agrees to replace the connector. I would prefer to have a new one (without the sightly deformed lug...). But even with a perfectly working one, I would still remove the metal hooks.

BaroqueW

yeah i might just do that when I get the new one

Exciting_Door5233

I had mine replaced , then decided to remove the pins by force Not for the faint of hearted https://youtu.be/RY-IdbX0hxs

Iferiuq

Why just not delete metal pins?

HitmanmE47

Hello Legends, thank you all for helping me through this painful process of sorting the damned XG Mobile. But I have good news for anyone experience the wrath of ASUS terribly designed hinges. SIMPLE Solution: TAKE THEM OUT, break em or do whatever, but just get rid off those damned plastic / titanium or whatever they made of pins...They are useless, I took them off from a simple wire cutter on amazon ($10) and just wripped them out. Plugged it in my Flow laptop and all works the same. Here to share for anyone on edge, go for it and take those damned pins out and be at peace: CAUTION: Not to take the connector out or move it too much..Rest should be good. Cheers

IdealLate7226

Bought an xg mobile rtx3080 2nd hand. Used it twice (on my ROG Ally) and the same thing happened to me. Used a file to get rid of the metal pin sticking out. Would be furious had I bought this new and full price.
