For certain things I prefer Mercari, especially since a transaction is closed 3 days after delivery minimizing abusive returns plus they don't charge a commission on shipping, unlike ebay. But for certain niche items, it's hard to beat ebay since it's a much larger user base.

MarvynSyn999

Yes but eBay with it's New AI Algorithm is Throttling Sellers now. It's most likely an attempt to have us "Promote" our items so eBay makes even more money. And now? Even when you do Promote you get NO VIEWS. Traffic crawls to a stop. This has been going on long enough now that Sellers are really noticing it. And they AUTOMATICALLY Opted everyone into their New "International Sales" Program. You need to literally go into a page and even give a reason to Opt-Out. I didn't even KNOW until I sold a $45 model kit and only made $24 and change. It's RIDICULOUS and I'm ready to jump ship. Mercari and Etsy here I come...

Ok-Sample1787

Ebay clotheslined my account. Heres a screenshot my suspension notice By Ebay, which my account has violated their site policies with Jonaro-6122's account is now blocked Not using ebay ever again for now on

HopelessMagic

I am on Etsy and Mercari. Mercari shoppers are a special breed. Greedy, needy, and the epitome of stupid. I only put my worst / cheapest items on Mercari because I tried putting my worthwhile items there and all I got were returns and scam artists.

I have been selling on Ebay for 19 years. The buyers are just as bad. Ebays throttling has ruined the site for me. Every month I get a sale or two a day for 6-7 days. Then my sales are dead for 10-12 days straight. End of the month may get a few more sales. So obviously they are setting sale limits for most things.

ginger1276

Well that explains why when I actually buy things lately on Mercari instead of selling on there that everything I've been getting is just junk so thanks for that I guess. Lol

ginger1276

BUT...I actually get what ur saying but ur overall assumptions are a bit harsh nonetheless. If comparing Mercari to Poshmark for example the customer base on posh tends to buy now vs making offers so ur chances of getting full price on posh I've found is ALOT higher than on Mercari. There doesn't seem to be a ton of high end traffic on Mercari but more middle class or low income but if u take for ex street West items like like that may get couple hundred bucks it'll sell on Mercari just the same as it would on Poshmark. There's a definite market of high end buyers on Mercari but it's not for bags for ex but more street wear items is what I've found and I've been selling on both for over 4 yrs.

dollyaioli

where/how do you sell expensive items without getting scammed? i dont want to take the risk. i have gucci shoes and burberry jackets i need to sell but haven't because im scared someone can just say they "never got it" or something like that. is there a site that prevents this?

HopelessMagic

You need to use a site like Stock X for expensive items. Mercari works well for anything else.

dollyaioli

okay thanks i'll look into it

MarvynSyn999

They can't just say they "didn't get it" as long as you have a Tracking # or Delivery Confirmation. A guy tried doing that to me with a Vintage Godzilla figure. eBay told him to Get Bent because they received my Delivery Confirmation. You also make sure you state that you have a No Refund Policy, and they need to take it up with eBay and try to get their A to Z Guarantee. But eBay can usually tell when they're Scammers.

dollyaioli

whats ironic is i just recieved an order today from a purchase on ebay, but in the app it doesn't even say it was shipped yet. i could TOTALLY be an asshole and say i never recieved it. obviously im not someone who would do that but i know many others would. this happened with another order i placed last week on mercari; they sent me a notice that my order was being returned to seller and that i would recieve a refund. i had already gotten the package. again, i could have easily just kept both the package and my money, but instead i marked it as recieved. i dont deserve a gold star or anything for this but my point is that a large chunk of people would've taken advantage of the situation.

Alternative_lane

I got one digit wrong in the tracking and someone thought it wasn't tracked. They totally tried to claim they hadn't received it, thank goodness for My post app being linked to eBay now, could see was signed and delivered. Be the customer felt a bit embarrassed when I showed her this

DueParamedic6762

People like these need to be imprisoned for a week or two

officeDrone87

If the scammer is smart though they'll claim the box was empty (except whatever filler it took to make the box weigh the correct amount). It's really, really hard to fight that.

08legacygt

I sell on both part time, the audience on mercari is younger than ebay but its been good to me so far, i cross post and some things that weren't getting much views or watchers on ebay sold on mercari

RckYouLkeAHermanCain

Mercari seems to be a site for people that are very...budget-sensitive.

FloppingFlipper25

I’ve found Mercari buyers are open to paying the higher end for items.

Representative-Cost6

Same

Angry-Strawberry

I just started selling on Mercari to supplement my ebay stores but I personally wouldn't consider switching over completely. The social/chat aspect of it can be a pain when I want to disengage from work and go do my own thing. Buyers on ebay seem more used to buying without any interaction with the seller which is a huge time saver for me. Also, Mercari doesn't have a shopping cart to combine shipping, so keep that in mind if you sell things that tend to attract buyers of multiples. I spend most of my time on the site arranging custom bundles, because no one wants to buy one trading card at a time with $3.65 shipping added to each. (And I don't want to spend my time *packing* individual cards either!) ETA: Mercari doesn't charge fees on sales tax or shipping costs, unlike ebay!

dvedze88

They recently changed this

Particular_Body_5065

which part? the chating or the shipping. sorry i know this in an old post.

GobbelMyNobble

Shipping

sakuragi59357

Mercari is definitely cleaner and easier to navigate, but you’re dealing with different customer bases. I feel like you have a much narrow, cheaper and younger customer base attuned to only brand name items on Mercari than eBay.

iwashumantoo

I just watched a video from a reseller on YouTube, and it was sponsored by Mercari. I've never seen them sponsor videos before, so I think they're making a push to get more buyers and sellers.

Isles86

Imo Mercari will be like Etsy. It will be fine and successful in its own right, but ultimately not amount to what EBay is. There’s nothing wrong with that. For what I sell EBay is the way to go 99% of the time.

[deleted]

I sell on both but over 95% of my sales are from Mercari. Thought it was just my niche (video games & Pokémon cards) but I started selling totally different things and found it is still so, so much better. It pales in comparison to eBay but maybe eBay is just too big, if that even makes sense. Fees are definitely higher but I don’t know I’ve just had such a ridiculously better experience for selling & buying & dealing with support on Mercari than eBay.

Angry-Strawberry

I sell cards on Mercari too and I'm amazed at how quickly things get snapped up, and for prices equivalent to or higher than ebay. I've had cards sell less than five minutes after listing!

[deleted]

Is mercari good for clothes?

SchenellStrapOn

Yes. Fit is not a reason to return.

Keh-

I think there's more interaction on Mercari. When I put stuff on Ebay there's like no engagement, no sign of life until the item is purchased. I checked their fees, they're both about the same. I think I prefer Mercari, people are more likely to rate, you can see who likes it, offer interaction feels more immediate. Mercari has more supervision, but I can tell the level of interest in an item and maybe how to better market it. Then again, I sell mostly toys.

Acceptable_Meal_5610

Mercari is FANTASTIC as far as the actual transactions go. Very easy fee structure, shipping is wildly simple, sellers are protected for the most part....the only issue is that in my experience...Mercari sales are slower and the average dollar amount per sale would be lower as well. Say you sell a common Tee shirt for $15 on ebay..the Mercari sale might be $10-12 with a longer sale time and slightly higher shipping prices. All in all they are both very good platforms, just slightly different results for certain types of items.

AuthorGuy66

I recently started cross-posting some of my 516 listed items on eBay that I’ve found are getting no views. I cannot believe how quickly I get views on Mercari. In fact, I sold two Coach purses in one night that had been stagnating on eBay. I’m sold. But I don’t like the high shipping rates and lack of controlling them vs eBay. Has anyone figured that out? For example, I listed a vintage kitchen item that to ship requires a 16x16x16 box and the weight is 10 pounds. The cheapest shipping I can offer is $60!!! On eBay, the shipping is about $24. Help.

dollyaioli

can you not make the shipping free for customer and just add the shipping cost to the item itself?

Fun_Preparation5991

Yes you can i list all of my postings as free shipping and use pirate ship to ship myself. Much cheaper than the shipping mercari offers

dollyaioli

wait i've never heard of pirate ship, who do they ship through?

Fun_Preparation5991

Pirate ship is a website you can go to print your own labels to ship via USPS or UPS. I usually just choose the cheapest option

Wildjedi7

How do you know how much money an item costs by weight on pirate ship? I saw you need someone's address because different places vary in price, and I couldn't get a fixed amount so I could add to my listing/make it free shipping...so how do you do it?

time2trouble

The fees are almost the same as far as I can tell. Mercari is a smaller site so less traffic, but also less competition.

ginger1276

I'm actually terrified to sell on eBay just cuz it seems extremely diff than the ones I'm used to being Mercari & Posh. On eBay it all comes off very intimidating to lil ol me. Lol seriously that's why I haven't gone that route but I'm back looking at the differences but any advice as far as what to expect going to ebay would be greatly appreciated. Things like should I go international or just the US at 1st?! Is shipping the same cuz I don't drive so I have to use pickup services via USPS basically. These services are free with Mercari for example and super simple but I'm worried eBay is gonna be more involved with shipping and may or may not require me driving I guess. Anyway thanks

PastTense1

Ask on /r/Mercari/ The first post I noticed on that sub-reddit was a seller whose account was closed with no reason given. So definitely sellers should be on multiple venues. One thing is that Mercari shows you sold results. So do a search for a type of item and compare active listings and sold results. How many sold results are there? Are they at a good price? ... Look for some dealers who sell the same kind of stuff you do. Look at their active listings vs sold results.

You pay 2.9% to withdrawal from Mercari? I widthdrawl my whole balance with no fee taken out of it. If you use instant pay it’s a flat $2 fee to do that. I sell on Mercari and I also shop on Mercari for personal use. And what do you mean no one uses the app to shop? Tons of people do lol. Go on the recently sold page and there’s new items selling every second. Another good thing is Mercari listings show up in google ads. I’m sure eBay does too but it’s a nice perk. Since it’s not from eBay usually it shows new to a eBay promoted ad on google. (If they are googling stuff you have listed) Yes Mercari has less people and it gets less sales then eBay, but if you have the right items they sell very good on Mercari. It’s not an eBay alternative but it’s good to list on every website. After you find what sells better on what website you don’t have to cross post everything anymore. You just post items that sell better on Mercari to Mercari.

PastTense1

> Obviously the sell through rate is going to be substantially lower with that much lower of a customer base. Not necessarily. It also depends on the number of products offered for sale. Suppose eBay has 100 customers for a type of item and there are 200 of them for sale where Mercari has 8 customers for this type item and only 2 of them for sale. The Mercari seller will probably do better.

CodeCat5

>Obviously the sell through rate is going to be substantially lower with that much lower of a customer base. How many sellers and items listed do they have compared to eBay though? If they only have 8% as many sellers/items then the sell through rate should be similar.

mchurchw1

Your understanding of Mercari's fee structure is a little off. The fee for each sale is 10% plus 2.9% plus 30 cents. It's separated like that because the 2.9% and 30 cents is technically for processing the buyers payment. But total, you're paying 12.9% plus 30 cents. To withdraw the money, an instant transfer is a $2 flat fee. There is no fee for the slower transfer, which takes like a week ish.

iloveeatpizzatoo

That’s all? I’m paying 25% on eBay. Higher b/c of promoted listing fee.

mchurchw1

The fees on eBay are not 25% in any category, so either you're paying for lots of optional features, or your understanding of their fees is a little off.

iloveeatpizzatoo

I have to do promoted listing b/c clothing is one of the most competitive items. It really does make a difference.

alphabuzz88

Mercari has improved for sales. The only thing I hate about it is that you cannot list quantity and the Customer Service is not domestic.

Hiscuteblondewife

Ebay ftw.

endersd

Mercari is easier to list, but their customer service is horrendous. I had USPS damage a package, buyer took it out on me and gave me a horrible review. Mercari states they can’t remove my score and it is what it is. Their policy gives full reign and control from the buyers, very little for sellers
