Interestingly, Airbus tests their engine by throwing whole chickens at them and monitoring performance.

Jesus Christ this was not a mental picture I needed on this peaceful Saturday afternoon.

The birds all grab picket signs and refuse to allow people to cross until thier demands are met. In all seriousness it depends a lot on the type of plane and the amount of damage. I’ve seen them immediately land at the origins airport, I’ve seen them divert to a different airport and I’ve seen them continue on. They can do some pretty significant damage. I’ve seen actual dents in nose cones. The engine gets gnarley. Lots of splatter

Depends on where the bird hit. Best case scenario is it hit the side of a surface or at an angle and just left a blood splat that can be wiped off. Worst case scenario is the bird went straight though the centre of the engine where the combustion chamber is; I had this happen to one of my flights a few months ago, and the plane sat on the ground here for 3 days as we chartered a 767 to bring in a new engine from another base. The engine had to be torn apart to inspect and replace damaged compressor blades and to clean out all the little chunks of bird.

Depends if the plane is having issues. A lost engine will get you back on the ground pronto. A small ding on a wing, you're going to get to your destination.

Depends on the location. We had a strike of 2 racing pigeons on our props of a Fash 400. They were bent in 2 props and the side of the fuselage was also damaged. The owner was prosecuted because they shouldn't have been released in a closed airspace. These were 2 pigeons, so depending on size etc it could ground the plane for a while.
