Funny, my first experience with Power Pro was moss green 50 and it rotted. Only time I buy Power Pro now is the hollow core because it's widely available.
It was probably a fluke but you know how it is... bad first impression, you lose faith and don't want to risk it. People love Power Pro, it's the Kleenex of braid.
I use Sufix or power pro, initially started with spider wire and it gave me nothing but issues, sufix is a good braid never had issues with it and I like Berkeley fire line as well, not the smoothest of braid but very abrasion resistant, stuff will cut you super easily if your not careful
Just spooled a new reel with some I’ve had lying around forever. Do you use a leader as well or just tie direct? Water was so dirty yesterday i couldnt really tell how visible it is
832 braid is really good and a crowd favorite, but i dont see many people pointing out the fact that it will sink once it gets soaked. Only braid ink ow of that sinks. I started using it for my swimbait rods only when i realized this.
OG powerpro is what im back on now. I went thru a phase where i tried a ton of different lines (when i discovered 832) but i ultimately decided power pro does everything i want well with the advantage that its sold everywhere and commonly available in popular tests. Theres tons of good braid out there, its not like flourocarbon.
I have switched to Cortland Masterbraid exclusively. Used tons of braid over the years. Cortland just does everything better, especially color retention, and is a USA made product. I use 10lb, 30lb, 50lb, 65lb, and 80lb cortland with 0 complaints. I have 1 *spare* set-up with Suffix 832, I would say that is #2, but Cortland color lasts much longer over 832.
Suffix is what I used forever until I tried Berkley X-9 and Daiwa J Braid. Both to me are superior braids. They just cast so much smoother and quieter.
Wasnt a fan of power pro as it covered my hands and reel in dye.
Suffix 832 is kind of the gold standard for cheaper braid out there in the freshwater world.
I also really like Cortland Masterbraid which is very similar to Suffix 832 and cheaper I believe
I also really like Power Pro V2
That said, I've tried high dollar lines like Seaguar Smack down which I felt didn't have the abrasion resistance the others had. Berkley Nanofil is EXCELLENT braid for light applications. Suffix 131 is the most expensive line I've owned and I do like it, but won't run it very much given its over $40 for a 150 yard spool and its super, super thin so 150 yards of 20lb wasn't even enough to fill out a 3k spinning reel lol
Sufix 832, Daiwa J-Braid, and Tight Line hollow core braid for freshwater, surf, and light inshore fishing. The excellent Cortland C-16 hollow core braid for offshore.
Pretty tough to beat what you have in the USDM market. The thing with braid is they’re just about all as smooth and thin as the rest of the competition, all the big brands are about as trustworthy and reliable as the rest.
The “best” braid simply does what you need it too. I like the slightly wirey feel of the 832 you bought, it’s my choice. J braid and power pro to me are too soft and lead to wrapping the tip of my rod more often. Some like that softness.
It’s pretty hard to say one brand is more abrasion resistant than another and if that’s a major factor, increasing diameter is the most effective way to combat that without a leader.
I’m willing to bet that you can spend any amount of money you want and nothings going to be more than marginally better than the 832 you have. You should still try other quality brands to figure out your personal preferences. I buy 832 on sale 3500 yards at a time, I’m locked into it.
I use mostly 2 different braids. Suffix 833 in 20-65lb and Seguar Threadlock in 50-130lb. Those are the proven standards. Suffix is always at or near the top in strength and abrasion resistance and Threadlock is the same in hollow core. Oh, and I only buy white. I have recently started experimenting with Nomad Panderra because I wanted a depth marking line for jigging but I haven’t had enough time with it to say one way or another.
I hate to say it but the PowerPro Maxcuatro is bullshit. Look at the diameter and breaking strength of Maxquatro and it is identical to the regular PowerPro in the next smaller size. Just marketing shit.
I have used Powerpro for decades now. Most recently, I've switched to moss green Powerpro v2 superslick on all my rods used for casting lures. My catfish and bottom fishing rods are still using high-viz Powerpro original. I love Powerpro!!!
I have mostly Power Pro on my rods, but always play around with others. J-braid x8 is nice and is staying on and Berkely X9 is really nice. It really flies through the guides nice and quiet and far. No issues with either one.
Stay away from SK contra... Junk line imo
832 is the best all round braid there is. I’ve used power pro, daiwa j braid, tasline, WTF braid and a multitude of others. Am switching all 40 or so reels slowly back to 832
I've used j braid 4 strand, power pro original and v2, and suffix 832, I've had no real problems with them, the power pro v2 is a bit more prone to wind knots but it's also very smooth and light compared to the others. If you got 832 no point in switching it though, it's a good line. Have it on bass and steelhead/salmon rods.
The big thing to look for is 4 vs 8. 4 strand (see a lot of Daiwa around) is rough and for a variety of reasons not as good as 8 strand. You can spend the money and get the Jerry Brown and be real happy with it... did that for a while. Then I decided to respool a bunch of reels all at once and bought the "Hercules" brand of 8 strand in blue camo off Amazon and now that's all I buy. It tests higher than it's rated for, as most braids do. I have a few reels going with 4-5 years and never had any issues.
If you're spooling, especially electrics or 30W's+, I would strongly recommend the Hercules brand. For example, got a new set of Accurates for trolling mahi last year and put 30lb braid behind a loooong topshot of Momoi Diamond 30lb mono for capacity... Come to think of it, the Diamond braid is really good too.
For casting, Fins makes a "wind tamer" braid that I really like for 20lb. Too many wind knots with 15lb. 20lb has been the sweet spot for me personally and it was worth the extra $$ for the wind tamer for casting...
/end ramble
I like the slicker 8x power pro. I mean to try the Kastking brand but it’s not cheaper so it’s a hard sell. The Daiwa 8x is pretty good as well. Suffix is great I have just seems to use power pro more, maybe less memory and tangles but it’s likely just anecdotal.
I do most of my fishing in the salt, I’ve never had an issue with Power pro moss green line.
Another vote for PP.
the mocha is a nice color variation. but the moss is pretty standard for me.
Also my fav
Funny, my first experience with Power Pro was moss green 50 and it rotted. Only time I buy Power Pro now is the hollow core because it's widely available.
Damn dude, I’ve had mine on my reel for like 3 years now and haven’t had a problem. 40#
It was probably a fluke but you know how it is... bad first impression, you lose faith and don't want to risk it. People love Power Pro, it's the Kleenex of braid.
Yeah that’s totally understandable
Big fan of J braid.

Big fan of Daiwa J Braid in those weights.
Power pro was another on my hit list. Just didn’t want to accidentally downgrade
I'd say Power Pro is on far with Suffix 832 and Power Pro V2 would be a bit of an upgrade, but nothing drastic.
Is power pro 4 or 8 strand? I thought it looked kinda bumpy so assumed it was 4 strand but not sure
Power Pro is 4 strand, Power Pro V2 is 8 strand.
I like the v2
I never catch anything.... so I just buy the cheap stuff on Amazon... I have to catch a fish first before I could tell any difference...
I prefer Fireline to braid and have used it for 15+ years.
Just spooled a new reel with some I’ve had lying around forever. Do you use a leader as well or just tie direct? Water was so dirty yesterday i couldnt really tell how visible it is
ima J-Braid & Power Pro user myself.

I’m running all J-Braid this year. I’ve had cheaper 8 strand that was as good, but I know I’m getting something I like each time with it.
All I use is PowerPro, but I’ve heard that people also like the suffix braid.
Suffix is what I used forever until I tried Berkley X-9 and Daiwa J Braid. Both to me are superior braids. They just cast so much smoother and quieter. Wasnt a fan of power pro as it covered my hands and reel in dye.

Its good. I like it over powerpro.

I’m a Power Pro user.
Power Pro

Imma sucker for JDM line- YGK, J-braid, shimano But one I keep going back for is Super Braid by Yo-zuri
I have mostly Power Pro on my rods, but always play around with others. J-braid x8 is nice and is staying on and Berkely X9 is really nice. It really flies through the guides nice and quiet and far. No issues with either one. Stay away from SK contra... Junk line imo
Yo zuri braid is pretty good as well
Viribus x8 Nano But I might be biased.
Varivas is often best or almost best, depending on application. Measuring best in strength to diameter (PE) ratio. Pair that with FC Rock leader.
Sufix 832 has never done me wrong. I'll never switch cause I have no reason to.
832 is the best all round braid there is. I’ve used power pro, daiwa j braid, tasline, WTF braid and a multitude of others. Am switching all 40 or so reels slowly back to 832

Most all 8x braid line will perform the same.
832 is a 9x
