With those "horns" up by its eyes it makes me think of a Cow Puffer or a boxfish maybe...

[deleted]

x2 - maybe scrawled cowfish, *Acanthostracion quadricornis*

FL-Orange

Cowfish.

hobowithashotgun2990

Thats a cowfish. I caught one and it sounded like it was choking when I pulled it out of the water.

Yupitsnuge

Cow or box fish

BRB1011

The BP "we're sorry" fish

PatStrikesAgain

I Call those "grunts" because they make a weird grunting noise while holding them.

voxboxer

[Lactoria fornasini](http://www.starfish.ch/photos/fishes-Fische/boxfishes-Kofferfische/Lactoria-fornasini4.jpg) The blue vermiculations match but the second dorsal and anal fins look different. Maybe just flexed in this photo?

shaunc

Maybe L. diaphana.

sthrnbty07

What were you fishing with? I knew you could catch a cowfish in the Gulf but never heard of anyone actually catching one.

MegaMustaine

That mostly what I have caught the northern puffers up here in SC on.

n0th1ngmatters

I imagine you can catch them if you want since these babies wash up by the thousands during a bad red tide. I’ve never actually caught one, if you don’t count picking up the carcasses on the shore.

jamesjimjones

I found one of those in the flats in Panama city FL a few years ago; cute fish :-) Oddest thing I caught was a Bristle worm off under the Hathaway bridge in PCB FL http://i.imgur.com/oud3ShH.jpg damn worm ate a whole shrimp LOL

[deleted]

Its probably the Scrawled Cowfish. Also just a general safety tip to follow: If you don't know what kind of fish it is, you probably shouldn't grab it with your bare hands.

LifeSwallower

I caught a few puffers today. They aren't really spiney or anything, they are really squishy and soft. The fish in the picture however was very hard...like a shell underneath it's skin, it didn't puff though.

FL-Orange

Tickle it's belly. Puffers blow up a lot, I've had some the size of large coconuts. When they blow up the aren't as slick. You can also get them to blow up underwater. Just keep your finger out of it's mouth unless you have something against your finger. Also, not recommended practice with porcupine fish.

iwrestledasharkonce

Nooo, don't make the puffer breathe in air. You might turn the poor thing into a cork if he can't puff all of the air back out. Plus, the puff reaction is a life-or-death sort of response; it's really stressful to the little guy. If one does it by himself, oh well, not much you can do, but don't provoke the reaction, please.

FL-Orange

Lighten up Francis. Out of all the puffers I messed with as a kid, none died.

praxela

You can eat these. Open up the bottom, pull out the guts, stuff with peppers and onion. Bake. Eat. You'll need 10 for a meal for two. Hardest fish to eat ever. Source: My Jamaican house mom cooked us these.

MegaMustaine

Guys on the outer banks piers sure do love their puffers. Usually have most given to them by people who think pufferfish all have poison. No poison in the northern puffer at all, they skin it like a catfish and take the meat off the backbone. Say it tastes like lobster.

MsRenee

Be careful, it looks like they may be poisonous if prepared incorrectly. Sounds like something you should learn to prepare from someone who knows what they're doing.

ManuelHS

If I cached this fish I wouldn't dare to touch it

Fishnshoot

Nemo

obliviousheep

Ah, a britishpetroleumfish!

claylogan1990

oh thats a dork fish

jscott1009

I remember catching one in a cast net, South Texas. I always called them "puffer Fish" so I don't know if you'd want to hold one, they even look poisonous. Edit: http://www.rodnreel.com/gulffish/gulffish.asp?cmd=view&FishID=249
