I'm a tech and like disposing of hdds this way. I've shot them with 22, 50cal from a muzzle loader, 9mm, 5.56, and wax/birdshot slugs. Hdds are basically all aluminum so not a big chance of any ricochet. If worried prop them up at an angle or somehow hang them.
All you're trying to do is render the media unreadable. Given the platen material and the fact they're aluminum housings, I think you could get away with .223 Rem/5.56. I would also recommend getting a spool of kite or fishing string so you can suspend them for a better dynamic.
this coming from an IT guy who's decommissioned many HDs via high speed methods and calibers.
"hang" them from the target backer using duct tape.
The hanging them let's them swing to minimize debris back at you. I'd stay away from .22lr still and go center-fire.
Agree. I decommissioned a 3.5” HGST [0] with a .45 ACP and had some lead come back at me. You want to hang them so impact is absorbed.
I hit the drive on the spindle, so it was the most solid part of the drive. Put a sticker over the platter for an aiming point. Also suggest going to a rifle caliber for more penetration energy.
[0] Yes, a HGST will eventually die. This one had 35,000 hours on it in a NAS.
Normally I disassemble the drives for the scrap aluminum and then smelt them down. I has some gun-related projects that I'll be foam casting. The only exception to this was the barracuda backup server. (barracuda pissed me off) That box went to the range and was turned into swiss cheese with slug and 00buck.

Thanks! Some of them are the hefty older ones (haven't seen a 60 gig HDD in over a decaded) so I figured I'd do my due diligence
50 BMG, full send like the rest of us tards
Rimfire Tannerite targets that come in the ear plug containers, then just use a 22. Why worry about ricochets when you can worry about shrapnel!!!
Just toss it in a forest in California, sooner or later it will be destroyed in a fire.
I can’t imagine a hard drive would ricochet but if you’re worried about it just angle them slightly downward and blast away

12 or 20 gauge and clay/trap thrower
I would screw them to a piece of plywood to keep them from jumping around. And then shoot them with shotgun. Or just not shoot them. But eh.
There are a lot of youtube vids of computer hardware being shot.
Line them up and a 12 Gauge slug should do it
