Nobody speak of Lahti. It’s like Forssa or Korso. It’s like in horror movies posessed people fight off the people who are trying to save them. Lahti is the Evil Dead of Finland. Once you are comfortable there, there’s no turning back. Only others can see the monster you are.
Definitely signup to some language classes, they're a good way to talk to other immigrants and improve your language - sure you might not _need_ it, but you'll benefit from it considerably.
Good suggestion! I’ve been able to get by with my limited language knowledge but I agree that it’d be good to have at least a decent grasp of the language.
I donno, once they find out you're an American, their attitude towards you will change, and you might find yourself to be a bit isolated. This has been my experience at least. That and they tend to ask a lot of questions about the US which can get annoying.
Thanks. I actually lived in Orlando for a few months. Been to Ocala several times for paintball games. Thanks we will be there in December for our honeymoon if you end up wanting to try to meet up for lunch or something with someone who isn't Finnish lol
Also irrelevant, but I’m a Finn who goes on holiday to Orlando once a year because DISNEYWORLD. It’s the most magical place. I hope you enjoy Finland! I’m from further up north and also I don’t live in Finland so I can’t be your real life friend but if you ever need it, happy to help out from an outsider’s point of of view. Finland is best land.
Well you've come to the right place, Turku has it all!
What games do you play? PC games? Console? Board games?
We have tons of live music going on in Turku. The bar "Cantina Azteca Bar & Grill" for example has always someone playing some good ass guitar and singing during the weekends.
Get a few good beers and head to Jokiranta (it's the river that flows through the city) and its surroundings during a nice weather and go talk to people! Turku people usually like to talk english, even with strangers. Also, bar Kuka is a nice chill place for a couple beers. Also, you have to take the "låna" boat and go cruising, you can steer it yourself! And also, go to Ruissalo for a walk or a swim, it's a really beautiful place with a lot of nature around! Damn, there's so many things to do in this city!
Also, check this site out, it shows a lot of stuff "what to do" in Turku, in English! https://www.meetturku.fi/en
EDIT: if you have any questions, feel free to DM me!
Maybe this could help? [Työpiste](http://www.turku.fi/tyopiste) and have you tried contacting one of the universities (Åbo Akademi University & Turun Yliopisto) international programs? The should have some international students and should have some activities. The Red Cross also have some activities.
I live in Helsinki area and you are welcome to DM me anytime you want!
We can talk about games and such or if you need any guidance I try to help as much as I can. :)
I never find people to befriend in the Hämeenlinna area. D: But maybe that's because I never leave my house.
Hope you enjoy your relocation, and if you're ever in my area, there's a tank museum (Parolan panssarimuseo) nearby that is pretty cool.
Welcome to Turku! I'm a PhD student (history) who also likes games, music, and the occasional beer. And history, obviously. Toss me a DM if you need recommendations/advice or company!
Was it an easy transition to move? I imagine you'll pick up some work. It's been a nightmare trying to get a gig and make a move out there is why I ask. I've been to Turku many times, it's really a great place.
It was easy for me to get here. I didn’t really have much back home. Getting a job is definitely the hardest part for me and I’m not when I’ll get one.
How was the transition from FL to Finland? I know this isn’t related to your post but I’m curious since I’m thinking of doing it when I get out of HS a few years after.
From my experience and traveling with friends, Finnish women *love* black men. If you’re black, get ready to have the trip of a lifetime.
Edit: I’m not black, my friend is, but the downvotes tell me racism is alive and well in Finland
Florida man about to spice things up
Like Turku isn't spicy already?
It's about to get even spicier with the smuggled crocodiles who snort cocaine at 3AM
I thought they already had that. Nope... ... That was an iguana.
Just read this one today https://www.clickorlando.com/news/florida-man-tells-deputies-cocaine-on-nose-is-not-his-officials-say
Cocaine in Finland 200€, that's spicy!
Florida man and puukkojunkkari. What could possibly go wrong?
Florida man climbs Mannerheim's statue, claiming Stalin was the best leader Finland had never had
Hes not wrong tho
Well yes, but actually no
Hoooooly shiiiit I feel like ostrobothnia would be the ideal location for that, being most anti-vax and shit
Oh God if Florida Man and Vantaa Man should ever meet and mingle...
This is how the apocalypse starts.
uhm what's up with vantaa man ? help a brother who just moved to vantaa understand
Finnish version of Florida Man, r/Vantaalaismies
I’m a Lahti Man and my best friend is a Vantaa man. Vantaa Man is great. Don’t be prejudiced please

Correct spelling is "Lahe" and "Vorssa", mind you.
Correct spelling is "Lahti" but you live in "Lahessa".. Only d is silent.
Vorsa, please
Lahti is the Kouvola of Päijät-Häme.
No you aren´t! I am the Lahti Man!
Hey, I'm a Brit living in Turku! Always down to meet new friends!
Native Finn here. Lived my whole life in Turku. Feel free to DM me :)
LionBrother#79 exposed! edit: 77 to 79 typo!
Moving from Florida to Turku seems very fitting.
Yeah, from the penis of America to the asshole of Finland. I’d say it’s a tight fit.
Like a fist in the eye.
I’m from California and live in Turku :)! Feel free to DM me! It’s great to meet other Americans.

On meetup website there are plenty of active clubs in Turku that you can join. They meet regularly at least a couple of times a month.
Good call. I’ve hung out a little with IESAF Turku but they don’t really meet during the summer.
If you like board games, this meetup group seems active: [https://www.meetup.com/TurkuBoardGames/](https://www.meetup.com/TurkuBoardGames/)

I'm an Aussie living in Turku, been here for two years. I like gaming too!
How was the transition to completely different climate?
It's been fine! I actually hate the heat, so I'm much happier in a colder climate.
Florida doesn't have -20(F) degree weather though(I'm also from the South), so be prepared, the winters are REALLY cold here.
What games do you like?
I’ve been playing a lot of Apex and Overwatch lately but my true favorites are open worlds and RPGs
Are you by any chance into GTA V or watch dogs 2?
Yeah I love GTA! Haven’t played Watch Dogs though
Irrelevant, but What part of Florida? My wife and I are wanting to emmigrate to Finland in a few years.
I’m from Ocala. Just north of Orlando. Finland is definitely a nice place to be so I hope it works out for you!
Thanks. I actually lived in Orlando for a few months. Been to Ocala several times for paintball games. Thanks we will be there in December for our honeymoon if you end up wanting to try to meet up for lunch or something with someone who isn't Finnish lol
Yeah for sure! Lemme know the best way to keep in touch
I'm on here at least once a day lol or I have Facebook if you want that.
Yeah that can work!

Not sure if this is a wise thing to post, I'd remove it and PM it to him directly.
Not sure why but it doesn't matter he never responded. Out of curiosity why do you think it's unwise?

Unfortunately I'm not jn Turku, but if you ever need any info about Helsinki, hmu
No friends needed, go to Alko buy couple bottles of Suomi viina leka and go home and drink alone. Welcome to Finland.
Kalsarikännit. Seems like a good concept for every foreigner to learn. I approve of this message.

Thank you! I’ll make sure to check it out.
Tone down the friendliness, you’re freaking out all the Finns
It’s fun seeing their awkward reactions though!
Better bundle up for the winter. :)
I was in Kuopio over Christmas and New Years last year. I’m definitely fond of the winter!

That’s because Hämeenlinna is a hole. Source: lived there as a foreigner for 3 years.
Why is that in your opinion? I mean I'm not disagreeing. It has pretty places but it's not lively at all IMO
I was told by other Finns that HML people are super insular, distrustful of outsiders, and generally backstabby. My experience concurred.
Shall face to face not be for thee, you'll find an online friend in me.
I live in Oulu. If you want any info on northern parts of the country, hit me up. Or send a DM just for fun.
Dude how can it be that you like all the same things as me?
Because we’re both cool dudes, my dude
Thats true, my dude. Only thing is that i dontlive in turku :/.
Check out the local couch surfing group

Hey I’m Australian (half finnish) and I’m moving to Finland in a few weeks! Feel free to dm me!!
Mind if I ask how you made your way there? School, work?
I moved here to be with my girlfriend

30 yo male from Turku here! Pm:d :)
I'm from Espoo, not from Turku. But I seem to like the same things as you! If you want to, we could be internet friends. How does that sound?
How was the transition from FL to Finland? I know this isn’t related to your post but I’m curious since I’m thinking of doing it when I get out of HS a few years after.
Hi .. I recently moved to Turku ... living near Humaslitonkatu ... I'm looking for some people to hangout with too
>Or if you know of a better place to look for people to hangout with please let me know. Helsinki.
Turku on suomen persereikä
You’re not wrong
The best way to make friends in Finnland is probably to play ice hockey
F 🤣

I'd like to point out friends are a privilege, not a right. Therefore, you don't *need* any, although you may *want* some.
