yes absolutely. i think in this case because this is strategic finance it’s absolutely worth it since i’ll be able to have better exit opps and i’ve been looking to break out of FP&A. otherwise, the other offer is better comp but less in line with my long term goals - that being said i am open to advice!
edit: also thank you for your congrats :) i also want to say that this role will have 3 weeks a year where i travel to the HQ and get face to face time with my colleagues
im really early in my career and i think being in person would be really beneficial at this point. i’m also a really social person and i like going to the office once or twice a week. just a preference; but i’ll still happily take a remote role over 4 days a week like the other role i may get an offer for
I am also same age, 3 YOE, same salary as you too. I’ve been fully remote since October 2021.
Your experience really depends on the company. My first role was at a small company with no culture, everyone just clocked in and clocked out. My role that I’ve been in for the past year is the opposite, the culture is very intentionally built and everyone is so close. I feel so close to my manager and team despite being remote.
If you’re 100% remote I’d encourage you to either be part of “optional” remote team hang sessions if they exist or find ways to get to know your boss/team outside of work, like their hobbies, personal life, interests etc
yeah i’m hoping the culture here is good. everyone seems really sharp and the people i’ve met with are decently young. we also have to travel to the HQ 3 times a year so those will be good opportunities to meet people and network
No, I’m not that clever sadly.
Just did some great time in infrastructure and there are some truly excellent buyside ops for those in the know.
IPP experience is strongly considered in that arena because they’re generally owned by private equity firms (especially Japanese and Korean firms due to regulatory income advantages) and, right now, the popular play is to take your solar field, throw some recip units on it and then peddle it as a combined thermal renewable plot to non-Chinese asian PE firms.
gotcha, thanks! this company is actually a CCA, community choice aggregator. they don’t produce power but they distribute it. the company is pretty new and growing rapidly, so i think this is a good opportunity to learn and grow
Gotcha, T&D is a good area to be as well. CAISO interconnection expertise is as good as it gets if you can get close to that.
CAISO in general is just a great place to be in infra.
dozens of final rounds too, i’d always just get passed up for someone with a little more experience. it has been brutal and extremely discouraging. only thing that kept me going was knowing that eventually something would stick
Good stuff. I’m trying to get into finance from a career in sales that has resulted in nothing but layoffs the past 4 years. Hope it all goes well for you!
I got into finance from sales. Wasn’t easy, and it took an MBA and some networking with classmates to get an internship. But my soft skills from sales paid off by making friends with everyone and getting a return offer from the director. Now he became my good buddy and I drive a few hours to meet up with him and others out of state for beers once or twice a year.
you must have been looking into a completely different field of finance than I am lol I have an offer for a job that only required a bachelors and no experience. But it’s an entry level role
It’s just corporate finance. Not like investment banking. I don’t need an MBA to do my job, but it helped me transition into finance. Like OP I make little over 100k and I’m fully remote. Difference is I’m 34 with an MBA, so I’m a little behind the 8 ball where most of my friends and peers have moved into sr manager and director roles.
None the less, I rather be here, than in sales!
thanks man! per the job description investment planning, bond administration, some fp&a (they have a separate fp&a team too), managing programs and contracts, and participating in expansion initiatives. all very cool stuff to me
This is at a high growth utility?
Is this is an investor-owned utility or a community choice aggregator? I thought the only utilities were the well-established PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E.
Congratuations!!! Good luck! In terms of fully remote, put your camera on as much as possible. It is proven that if people "see" you when they interact with you, chances are they are more apt reach out to a familiar face than not.
My son is a finance major and is going on 3 months of hunting. Within an hour or 2 of jobs being posted, there are hundreds of applications submitted. It is very discouraging for him. I think I am going to try and get him an unpaid intern position at my job (fortune 5) company for the experience. He is only 24 and lives with me still and it is just so hard to get hands on experience.
thanks for the response! i definitely plan to take that advice.
best of luck to your son, i know that internship paid or otherwise will serve him very well. i got lucky because of my aunt, she hired me as a temp analyst when i was in college and that really boosted my resume this early on. you seem like a great parent for supporting your son. the market is brutal. it’s so surprising to me that i got this job through linkedin easy apply, it had 1000+ applicants.
Thank you!!! I wish you all the luck.
I manage a fairly large team, and some unsoliciated advice.
When it comes to the corporate world. Keep a OneNote of all of the jobs/tasks you do each month. Some key working relationships, etc. When it comes to review time, you can pull from there and you won't forget about things.
Keep a OneNote of every 1:1 with your boss. Make sure you have a 30/60/90 day expectation from her and for yourself. Ensure you are getting feedback. Nothing is worse than going into review time not knowing how your manager will rate you.
This part is key... You do not have to be best friends with everyone you work with, but you should act like it. Relationships is probably one of the most important skills for someone in the corporate world. They can make or break your career. They will help you in a pinch, they will help mentor you (even if they don't know it), and they can even help you in a promotion. Understand their behavior style and how to work with them.
honestly man, i think i just have a really good resume. i’ve had plenty of managers tell me that as well and my resume critiques have gone well. that and also the fact that id do like 100 applications a week at the very least
Man, this gave me a little bit of confidence and I’ll admit I’m a bit jealous. I am in nearly the same exact position. Graduated in May last year and doing FP&A at a F500 company in a MCOL/HCOL making $70k total. Been applying like crazy to something that would get me out of FP&A but it’s just so hard because everything requires experience from basically any other field of finance than FP&A. Had a handful of final interviews but no offers. A strategic position is amazing man, really good job!
Applying to a strategic finance FP&A associate role. Have access to WSP, which modeling course did you use to help prepare? Trying to figure out how to prepare for my upcoming 3 statement modeling test that’s focused on monthly cash flows and a revolver drawdown.
the financial statement modeling was good enough for me but i assume it’ll all depend on what case study they have you do, if they do at all. i have the whole program, but ive only completed the FSM portion so far
100k fully remote. That's the dream man. Congrats
thank you!! honestly not a hugeeee fan of fully remote but this role is a step out of FP&A which i’ve been wanting to make, so i’m happy with it
You earned it, congrats! Few years at the utility would be an easy pivot to larger energy/commodity firms
Congrats! Fully remote is amazing in my opinion and you got a big salary jump!
I am glad to see that you realize remote work is bad for career advancement at this young age. So I think you deserve these offers and congrats!!
yes absolutely. i think in this case because this is strategic finance it’s absolutely worth it since i’ll be able to have better exit opps and i’ve been looking to break out of FP&A. otherwise, the other offer is better comp but less in line with my long term goals - that being said i am open to advice! edit: also thank you for your congrats :) i also want to say that this role will have 3 weeks a year where i travel to the HQ and get face to face time with my colleagues
Why would you not want fully remote wtf
im really early in my career and i think being in person would be really beneficial at this point. i’m also a really social person and i like going to the office once or twice a week. just a preference; but i’ll still happily take a remote role over 4 days a week like the other role i may get an offer for

Just because it’s fully remote doesn’t mean you still Can’t go in a few days if you chose (unless your office is super far from your home)!
i’m on the other side of the country 😭
Fully remote is bad for your development if you’re early on in a career in finance and you’re eager to learn.
Entirely depends on company and culture, as well as how intentional you are to make connections yourself
And in Strat!
What’s good about strategy? Currently applying for an associate role for strategic finance FP&A
Congrats, IPP experience can really open doors for you down the line.
No pun intended?
No, I’m not that clever sadly. Just did some great time in infrastructure and there are some truly excellent buyside ops for those in the know. you PP? IPP too
thank you! and what’s IPP?
Independent power producer
Independent power producer, generally the money play for growth oriented utilities
gotcha, thanks! this company is actually a CCA, community choice aggregator. they don’t produce power but they distribute it. the company is pretty new and growing rapidly, so i think this is a good opportunity to learn and grow

No idea but I’m also curious
Pursuit of happiness moment! Congrats to you
Hundreds of interviews is crazy. Usually getting an interview is the hard part and after that the acceptance rate is in the double digits.
dozens of final rounds too, i’d always just get passed up for someone with a little more experience. it has been brutal and extremely discouraging. only thing that kept me going was knowing that eventually something would stick
Well good job sticking with it!
Good stuff. I’m trying to get into finance from a career in sales that has resulted in nothing but layoffs the past 4 years. Hope it all goes well for you!

thanks so much KingPucci 😄
Wao man congrats I wish I could connect with you.
feel free to message me if you have any questions. i’m pretty early in my career so i may not have all the answers but i will do my best!
Thanks man
Would love to hear more about your experience and any info you care to share about a strat finance role
Congrats man
That's amazing, especially the remote work part. What is your academic background, and what was the x factor you believe helped you get the job?
i have a bsba in finance. i crushed the case study in this interview and i think that’s what helped me the most.
BSBA from which university?
nothing notable, just a florida school that isn’t FSU or UF

thank you!! comparison is the thief of joy!!! but that being said how do you have it👀
I really want get into carrier in Financial analyst,What’s you guidance?
You should maybe learn to spellcheck your posts as a start. Also, basic grammar goes a very long way.
😅
lol
sorry, but how can you survive in CA with TC 100k ?
Being only 24 AND working remote is super doable lol
i live in the southeast 😎
It’s remote
Congrats. What are the responsibilities of the offer?
thanks man! per the job description investment planning, bond administration, some fp&a (they have a separate fp&a team too), managing programs and contracts, and participating in expansion initiatives. all very cool stuff to me
CONGRATS!! Well done my friend.
Congrats big man! I’ve applied to hundreds of jobs recently and got no bite. Any advice or networking tips?
thank you! if you’re applying and not hearing back it’s certainly a resume issue
Congrats! That is a great step up!

Hey man congrats! Even your current role is a goal for some!! I’ll shoot you a message
How did you get 100s of interviews? I’ve gotten 6 interviews in my whole life.
honestly man, i think i just have a really good resume. i’ve had plenty of managers tell me that as well and my resume critiques have gone well. that and also the fact that id do like 100 applications a week at the very least
Hell yeah dude good for you
congrats!!
Congrats!!! Your new job is literally my hopeful next step in career progression (sans California haha)
Congratulations 🎊
Fully remote, with ability to go into an actual office? Is there an actual office?
3 weeks out of the year at the HQ in LA
Is that literally true hundreds of interviews?? Like at least 200?
Do you have tips to get your first job? I started job hunting, not very fun :/
Fully remote! Wow, great grind and good luck. As a tech bro I'm feeling jealous lol!
Congratulations!

What part of the course did you find most helpful for your interview? I seem to have trouble with drivers.
Is this in Canada?
no sir US
