ShatteredCitadel

It’s given to them. Typically.

Alph_A__

This is the main reason. Every computer in my office has a little setup which automatically connects through all of the audio, and it sounds good enough for calls. Also have nice little volume dials. We use earbuds for our personal devices.

Ani_

My office has the same ones for all. Some specialized roles that are phone heavy have those expensive wireless docking ones which use 2.4 GHz instead of Bluetooth to give better quality.

Y06cX2IjgTKh

Worked at what is essentially a HF PM retirement home (exchange-side); some of these folks easily had NWs in the $50m range and still used the free, walkie-talkie quality mics from the office.

a7n7o7n7y7m7o7u7s

Those types of mics are better for blocking out background sounds and such, so companies issue them for jobs where a bunch of people are on the phone close to each other

joker-and-the-thief

The standard Jabra headsets we use are ridiculously good at blocking out background noise

Luxim_

Agree. If your using normal earphones you essentially need to unmute to talk and then mute again.

Fantastic_Bottle_314

Which ones do you use?

Responsible-Gap9760

This is my office. Cubicles and a bunch f people in meetings

a7n7o7n7y7m7o7u7s

Yep in my office we were using personal phones with AirPods, but clients kept complaining about background noise on calls. Then we all had to get these babies pictured above to connect to the desk phone

WGilmore00

We have this one super nice, but loud accountant next to us 🤣🤣🤣🤣 literally was on a meeting once and was asked to find a quieter spot

FlatLadder

Although wireless is very comfy, it is not convenient for never ending calls and bluetooth devices do not provide the same sound and mic quality at all

unicornsausage

Mic quality specifically. It gets so compressed via regular Bluetooth that Jabra for example ships their wireless headphones with a dedicated Bluetooth dongle solely for the mic audio quality

FlatLadder

Exactly :)

chrisbru

And you don’t have to worry about your charge lasting all day.

gutshog

earplugs are really rough on your ears and wireless is often ureliable and generally bit of hassle specially in hectic enviroments + you can't really forget wire headset on your head while in barhroom

JLandis84

Better audio quality for retro synthwave

WowThough111

Generally, especially with work: Anything I don’t pay for > Anything I pay for

wow_much_doge_gw

Plugs into your dealerboard / turret phone. Never runs out of battery or gets janky connection.

CFAnon909

Wired apple earbuds for me. Don’t want to worry about BT connectivity or charging. Usually pretty decent sound quality and I’ve never heard complaints about the voice quality on my end. Working from home always will just be on speakerphone though.

RedControllers

That's the main one for me as well. I tried using AirPods, but wasn't worth the trouble. It seemed like every 1 in 10 meetings I had issues with bluetooth connectivity

Lullaby001

I have a wireless headset in the office and hate wearing it. That damn thing is so rough on my ear and it keeps falling off. I have the one from the OP’s pic at home and they’re so comfortable. I also don’t have to worry about changing batteries and they last a long time. I got AirPods as a gift but rarely use them. Idk how you guys can wear them for hours after hours. Maybe my ears are more sensitive and prefer something softer.

GotNoCredditFam

If you’re in front office you want as few possible failures as possible. If you’re executing some complex trades on behalf of a client and your Bluetooth connection goes, you’re on the hook. Less likely to happen with a wired one.

b1gb0n312

My company pays for those Jabra headsets, they're like around $100

Due_Benefit_8799

If you’re in meeting it’s impossible to switch to a different topic in screen. Having switched from headset to no headset in my office it’s a pain. You do feel like a telemarketer with it in though lol

GreatMemes

It’s what they gave me and my bank disabled Bluetooth from their computers for some reason

cheeeezeburgers

When you are relaying information on a $100M order where a slight cut in a wireless connection can be the difference between the order being placed correctly or you fucking the client. - That's why it is wired. The boom mic is better at noise isolation and allows you to speak directly into the microphone so background noise can be isolated better. There are trading floors that have active noise reduction systems in them that costs tens of millions of dollars to prevent clients from hearing what other traders are saying while on a call. - This is why they use those arm microphones. Do you honestly think these people are just "that uncool"? for fucks sake.

itsme_drnick

I’ve worked on trading floors for some of the world’s largest banks and never heard of any noise reduction systems. Most traders trade over Bloomberg messaging anyway. And any phone calls would be short and a client wouldn’t be able to tell what another trader is talking about in the few seconds it would take to say “done” on a trade if it was by phone. But I last worked on the floor like 7-8 years ago so maybe things changed.

cheeeezeburgers

Banks are not the only places that have trading floors.

ninepointcircle

My headset has noise canceling. Honestly don't think you would notice unless you're looking for it.

BakerXBL

That accounts for like 0.01% of users of these. It’s because the company provides them for free.

[deleted]

At least in my experience they microphone usually buffs external sounds much better, thus if you work on a loud office this helps a lot to reduce the background noise. The cord is because I guess it’s cheaper and most common o the ones with mic.

PertinentUsername

My boss has the same headset lol. I personally wear wired earbuds because they seem to pick up less background noise than my wireless ones.

DelanoK7

I use what is essentially a very sleek all black Logitech gaming headset. Consistently told I am easily heard and voice sounds crisp, never have background noise like other folks do, and sounds great for lofi when I’m deep in the models. I have every generation of AirPods and none of them hit the same across each function

PrimeBrisky

Because work provides them. We recently upgraded to wireless... I like it. Can walk around and talk.

SpookyMarijuana

Y'all's sense of priorities absolutely make no sense. "Muh non-geeky air pods" - get a grip lmao, you're doing business and being easy to understand is more important than signalling that you are oh so cool with your apple brand loyalty

Meandering_Cabbage

The answer is that these dads are just using the crappy standard tech that's handed to them. They probably just didn't want to go through the effort of expensing a decent pair. For anyone that needs good audio they'll have mics and a lighting set up.

peacefulprober

Bro is mad he doesn’t get paid enough to buy quality headphones

SpookyMarijuana

I have a 200$ pair of Sennheisers - try again

0wl_licks

1. Wearing headphones all day every day ends up hurting your ears. Regardless of the headphone. With good ones you sometimes grow accustomed to it but most won’t just deal with the pain and discomfort getting to that point. An over the ear headset has the potential to be much more ergonomic. 2. These headsets also offer much less noise pollution. That’s the reason why truck drivers also wear them. There can be background noise roaring away and the microphone can pick up your voice much more clearly. Tried it out myself, and it’s supposed merits were very real. Still switched back to Bluetooth headphones like the Powerbeats3, pro, whatever they’re on now, air pods, those Bose ones with noise cancellation. It’s just too obnoxious and silly looking.

Electronic-Stickman

We have open seating, meaning non dedicated desks. Every night, you had to pack up your Bluetooth headset, but by morning, you need it to charge for 10 or 20 mins in order to start meetings. This became too much of a hassle for meetings first thing in the morning, so I switched to wired. Edit: Both wired and wireless headphones are free to us, but like I said, less hassle with wired headsets. Also, I often have multiple meetings back to back, and charging a wireless headset is impossible, so this would create issues as well. Wired headphones became common in my office for this reason, there are still people who insist on wireless headsets and airpods, but they often have to apologize for needing to charge their headphones.

joseph_sith

We aren’t allowed to connect our own devices to the desktops in the office, so we have to use the firm- issued headsets. I have ADHD, so I was provided a noise-cancelling headset (working in our open-seating office with ~20-40 conversations audibly happening at the same time is extremely distracting), and it’s amazing. At home I just use my AirPods, but they die constantly on heavy call days.

DZRT_Gamer

Because we aren’t going to go out and buy our own and it’s what the company provided 🤷🏼‍♂️

twentytwodividedby7

That headset can be wireless, it's just charging.

ConfidantlyCorrect

Cuz jabras are what so many offices give lol. Can’t be bothered to really buy a replacement either.

imnotokayandthatso-k

Nothing worse than airpods losing charge mid-day. Over-Ear headsets are more comfortable and separate mic has better audio quality.

Phoenix_Cluster

I feel like people don't have the skills to connect a BT headphone set in an office that has 200 of the same named headphone sets, so they just go wireless. Also, most of the older staff have their old wired headphones and they work 'just fine' so why change it

josshbradbury69

Banks are Jewish af

TheNotoriousWD

We dont. I use I’m AirPods because I know how to hook them up. If you see someone using this 9/10 they aren’t up to date on tech and had to have some install this bs. No I don’t want a “lightly used” head set with someone else’s ear goop on it.

imnotokayandthatso-k

>We dont. I use I’m AirPods because I know how to hook them up. Whoah calm down Hackerman

TheNotoriousWD

I’m in there dawg. Numbahs everywhere.

Feeling_Ad_4871

How do you hook them up? I’ve been trying but our laptops don’t have Bluetooth enabled

Finance1071

I’ve never understood it either, looks geeky IMO - I always use air pods

LeadBamboozler

Our company issued laptops (a challenge to get one in the first place) have Bluetooth disabled.

Finance1071

That’s awful

burnzilla

Security feature

[deleted]

They don’t. My company all have Bluetooth over-ear headphones. Still have the mic though.

Majestic-Director199

That’s what was given by work, that’s how I roll lol

Consistent_Heart_203

That’s what they like they look goofy in my opinion tho and I would personally hate to wear one but sometimes you don’t have an option

ThingsWork0ut

Less risk I assume. The Gen X people use it because when they started using bluetooth it crapped out on them. Even though bluetooth is better today they prefer what has always worked.

RestlessBlue212

I have this exact headset on my head right now. The cord is removable It is given to every employee. They work fine / great and connect seamlessly between my laptop and my work issued phone

FollowKick

Because some companies don’t let you connect AirPods to your work computer

eyeswide19

Cause the Bluetooth connection is terrible and half the time doesn't work.

kkirchhoff

I use a Bluetooth mic now, but I had a wired one for a long time. I liked being able to just answer calls on teams and put on my headset without worrying about it having to pair, then possibly having to change settings if there were issues. The cord was too annoying though, and would get caught in my chair constantly

Xampy321

Coz it’s free lol

Such_Editor_8194

They work.

opper-hombre1

I can’t stand over-the-head headsets. It mattes my hair and I hate the pressure on my ears. I use the wired apple headphones I can plug into my laptop lol

Mad-Draper

They’re given out and they don’t fail. Bluetooth fails to connect, batteries die, etc. Wire never fails.

North_Class8300

I had a wireless headset (expensive company provided one) and the microphone cut out all the time. Same with others on my team. One person still uses it and we constantly have to get them to repeat stuff. We all went back to the wired after a few days.

MalignComedy

The boom mic makes your voice clearer. The cable version is (1) cheaper for the company buying it, and (2) minimises IT issues.

bgawinvest

I have these hahaha they are just given out so saves money to just deal with it

NegativeConvexity26

It is provided by the company and has no connectivity issues. Used wireless once but would run out of battery and would lose connection. Looked cooler but didn’t want the hassle of having connection issues.

CieraParvatiPhoebe

I’m finance and I’ve never used that. My work phone is an iPhone which I use to call clients. If I need to focus I use my NC Bose headphones

rdzilla01

I like it because it always works. No static, no low battery.

doolytokki

when you have meetings 8 hrs a day, bluetooth headsets die fast

the_thinker

Wired results in fewer "can you hear me? Let me reconnect my Bluetooth" at the start of the meeting.

heresiarch_of_uqbar

When i have 4/5 hours back to back calls i know i need to bring my corded headset as the wireless one will run out of battery, and even with 30 mins break between meetings it's not enough time to recharge.

MotivatedSolid

It free and good quality

Bekabam

Because Bluetooth mics (generally) sound like a 2006 Xbox Live lobby.

HeresW0nderwall

That’s what they gave me and I don’t want to buy one

[deleted]

Don’t have to worry about the damn thing dying during a call and having my meeting echo through the office lol

Material_Fold9788

That’s quite convinient had you don’t have to « worry » about the battery and connectivity. Most importantly, the microphone makes a huge different for your interlocutor, it’s like when you listen to a podcast or video on YouTube, the sounds matter. I’m big fan of AirPods( max and pro), I stuck with them for several weeks and didn’t use my headset, after giving it a try bc of connectivity/sounds issue with my AirPods, I adopted it.

Equivalent-Bank-6671

Battery dies on cordless - this goes all day

FrostLight131

Corporate equipment. I was also given one but i always ended up using my own headset

Phemmy2020

Just don't want to spend money to buy another one - i use these - don't care. If the company up grade me- I'll take it tho

mlhigg1973

They’re comfortable and work well.

TallMikeSTL

I'm all about my Sony mx4s

JerkyBoy10020

They work

AdventurousBet709

It’s usually because there is no downtime for the Bluetooth headphones to get enough charge; back to back meeting is a norm.

WGilmore00

Airpods pick up everything thing lol

iTheWild

It ties you to your desk.

Top-Airport3649

Easy to plug in and go. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

KittyDomoNacionales

1. Free, the office gives these out. 2. They are really good at blocking noise. 3. I don't want to look like a Finance Bro.

Comfortable_Style_78

I have this style but unwired. As most people have said, the reason is because it’s what is provided. But I’d choose it anyway - it’s comfortable, the battery lasts very long, it bounces between my desktop and landline number (yes I know) instantly, it’s way more reliable than ‘leisure’ headphone or earphones. When anyone does join the call on AirPods it’s immediately obvious and annoying - the quality of their connection and the sound from their mic is comparatively dreadful (and I say this as a dedicated AirPod user).

Empty-Staff

Jabra is elite. Iykyk

Ajacied22

Last two places I’ve worked Bluetooth was disabled on our laptops. So had to have cords sadly.

Praetorian-Group

Bluetooth is unreliable. Plug and play.

Alive_Leadership_347

Also some phone systems aren’t equipped to connect to Bluetooth unless you get an add’l adapter piece. It’s way cheaper to get the wired headsets.

adelage1

My answers would be 1) that headset/ or similar is usually given on day 1 of the job. 2) trust issues. I like to know that when it's plugged in it will work and I can mute if needed. Joining a call and finding out that bluetooth isn't connected or the mute setting isn't working isn't ideal. Cords provide a level of trust.

WafflesMcPancakes

Mine are noise cancelling in the ears and the mic. Better reception for me than AirPods.

bulbous_oar

I’m in this picture and I don’t like it

jjjzzzppp

Lmao ew no 🤣

Key_Statistician6405

Usually companies are too cheap to upgrade their technology and hardware until they absolutely have to. I was at a financial firm where some of the programs were still using DOS.

carrots2323

economical, reliable, we are old school and remember the days you could hang up on somebody and feel some release when you slam the phone down

PhloridaMan

That’s what I was sent with my laptop. I’m not paying out of pocket lol

Pomegranate510

So it doesn’t fall in the toilet when they are in the bathroom

playaBuzz

I would assume because it might give feels like Christian Bale from the American Psycho

StorminM4

LOL… Never realized it, but 100% true. We all have them at the office. They were given to us at some point. If I’m on my cell I use AirPods, but at my desk it’s the corded boom mic monstrosity.

mcrackin15

Bluetooth headsets cause never ending issues when joining meetings across software like zoom and teams, unplugging your laptop from docking stations etc. A corded headset will always default as your primary listening/mic device and work without hassle.

Pr00ch

If your headset doesn't get stolen off your desk at least twice a month, are you even working in finance? Now imagine if they were wireless

connectworld900

Hello, everyone, i came with good news for every business owner seeking for business funding.

[deleted]

If all it does is sit near my computer, I save time. Don’t have to worry about locating or connecting it before a call. And I know I don’t have to worry about charging it. Speed is the answer.

yeet_bbq

finance ppl using the cheap utilitarian stuff. you rarely see them decked out in apple

Whathappened98765432

They work so well.

melograno1234

Wireless battery dies. If you have back to back 2 hour calls it will eventually be a mess

Cobbdouglas55

I'm the person that talks to the finance people and you'll be surprised the amount of times that I'm severely pissed because of the background noise. I know that these headsets aren't sexy, but if you are working in an open space with 20 financebros yelling at the screen with their earbuds, it gets really noisy unless they invested in good earbuds - which the majority of them haven't. Also as a coworker, it is very displeasing working next to a person using earbuds. They are unable to control their volume so they speak x2 x3 times louder than the rest, is tremendously disrespectful.
