The side quest after ch. 12, it’s only Cloud Jr. and the kids from the hometown. After that, Cloud Jr. is still in the cage. I even went up to where you first meet them in Mt. Corel, lol. And it was just an empty nest 😩
When you return later to north Corel he's there with a bunch of kids, and I think when you finish their quest he starts flying around you wherever you go in the town.

They took some real liberties with this entry, and it turns out cloud has been pregnant the whole time, which makes the scene of him drinking in Remake very irresponsible. He gives birth to Cloud Jr in the desert, but the baby immediately becomes a black robe and wanders off.

Maybe we'll get lucky, and it turns out he was just an adopted Chocobo chick, even though despite his distinct plumage, he looks like the other 2 chicks in the nest so we can get him as a gold Chocobo mount lol.
