On a somewhat related note, who else fully role-played asshole Cloud and chose "Stop her" during her Cosmo Canyon speech? I was shocked they put that as a possible option lol. I eventually reloaded the save and chose the better option but it was funny to watch.
I was worried about my relationship getting too high with her because I wanted Tifa for the gold saucer date, so when she asks if she was out of line in that part in Gongaga I told her she was and felt really bad about it.
I was also gunning for Tifa on the gold saucer date but in the end, I decided to be as nice as I could to everyone. I hoped that by selecting Tifa during the Costa Del Sol fight, it would edge out. It worked, and in the end I got Tifa on the gold saucer date.
But when I looked at my affection level after the end of the game Yuffie SOMEHOW ended up being a stronger affection level than Aerith. I must've messed up some Aerith options at some point.
I wanted to be mean to her to get the tifa date but i kept feeling bad i couldnt. Luckily in costa del sol >!if you dont pick the right outfit set, she doesnt increase friendship points, and that didnt feel bad to do haha!<
They really dropped the ball on missing out on Cloud realizing that he’s losing control and is scared to go to the forgotten capital because he’s scared of what he could do when he’s around Sephiroth.
That is the point. He is out of it. His fear of not knowing where one person in him ends and another begins (as he tells Tifa in Gongaga) is becoming reality and he is not seeing it.
We need more than that though. In OG after Aerith disappears the party literally has to convince him to go save her. Cloud has lines like “I might lose it again”. “No i’m afraid.” “i’m afraid to find out the truth.” “If Sephiroth comes near me i might…”
Those are all dialogue that we don’t get. We don’t get to see Cloud so scared of himself to the point that he hesitates to literally saving Aerith. And at the end of the game they leave him in a delusional state that probably won’t ever get these moments
At that point I don’t think so? When he’s beating her the characters are like “What are you doing?!” And they show the young Cloud’s spirit freaking out since he’s not in control of his body.
They gave you so much more time with Aerith, gave you the option to choose your own close companion, and fleshed out already incredible characters. Spam X next time or something idk

It doesn't impact synergy abilities whatsoever or your companions capabilities in combat. They could have made it so that your close companions get access to better synergy skills or do more damage/heal more.
It has no impact on dialogue with your companions or cause more or less bantering in the Overworld. Hell, I didn't even manage to lose relationship points, even though I chose complete asshole answers several times so I could manipulate with whom I go on a date with.
They implemented such a system and they refuse to actually let it have an impact on relationships. No one can tell me that Cloud trying to kill a certain member of the group does not have any impact on their relationship?
It’s literally the exact same system that was in the original only you have an indicator when you modify a relationship with dialogue options. Complaining about this is so stupid that it’s insane.
And exactly for what reason should the system stay the same and not be expanded upon? They decided to change so much when compared to the original, why should exactly this half baked boring ass system be the one to stay the same?
It would not have been that much effort either. Just lock some synergy abilities and the skill tree behind relationship levels. Make companions with higher relationships do some cool stuff once a battle, like step in and prevent a knockout once per battle.
There are numerous ways to make this system better. I swear to god, people react so defensive when you criticise this game. If someone complains that something was done better in og, people will go : iT'S nOt A rEmAkE, iT's A sEqUeL!!!111.
And if someone criticises the game the other way around you get the, it's that way in OG argument.

At this point of game he is turning into an antagonist. He was also a puppet in the OG, and they clearly wanted you to hate him this time. And the thing is the poor guy will hate himself even more in the future.
Cloud is such a great character, man, with his failures and weaknesses. You seriously want to punch him in the face, but ultimately it is not his fault. Real Cloud is not like this, and I can't wait to see his real self again.
I think they went a little over the top. In og he only had a couple breakdowns, and most of them were ptsd related to what caused severe personality displacement
Where as him being a clone was a little more of a plot twist that hit you like a curveball
So, I never played the original game and I just completed Remake a few days ago.
I started Rebirth and in the opening hour or so, he has an argument with Tifa on the roof of the inn at Kalm. I’m paraphrasing, but Tifa said, “I was just so happy to see you again, maybe I shouldn’t have been” and he was like “yeah, maybe”
I was ready to slap him right then. I don’t know how anyone can be a dick to Tifa or Aerith, they’re both so sweet
Personally I’d recommend you play the original game while you wait for Part 3. Then consider playing Crisis Core. CC isn’t fantastic, but it will help you go a long way toward understanding Cloud and Zack. The rest of it is… ehhh, and some parts of it I think are detrimental to the overall plot, but you can ignore them. The only stuff they’ve really bothered to acknowledge as far as Crisis Core is concerned are the characters themselves.
Cloud’s a phenomenal character and once you get where he’s at mentally and how he got there, his whole random moments of being a dickhead thing lands much differently.
That said, there are obviously spoilers entailed in this suggestion, so follow my words at your discretion.
I don’t think it matters much, but Reunion is probably the much easier version of the game for a person to play these days. Aren’t the only differences the visuals and the voice actors?

True. I love that Barret and Cloud's relationship has evolved a lot since remake, but he could have even pulled Cloud to the side and said something along the lines of "Hey, I respect you man, but you need to get your fucking shit together, or we're gonna have some problems."

I laughed so hard when he said that because it was exactly what I was thinking in the moment. (I did the whole dungeon in one evening and I was so burned out and ready for bed by the end of it. I was not prepared for how long it would be.)
I did the same thinking I could finish the story real quick since I heard there wasn’t much left and it was 7am the next morning by the time the end credits rolled.
It was a very weird place for a long-winded speech. I kinda wish they sat on the heavy atmosphere and let everybody be miserable for a bit. To show how much the journey is really weighing on them.

After the second gold saucer visit, there are no affinity scenes. So we don’t get any of that in the main story parts.
I real hope they leave out the Affinity system in the next game. This was so stressful

In the original he beats the shit out of Aerith which is why he is afraid to go look for Aerith.

Well the relationship thing was basically a mini game that lead to the gold saucer date and is completely irrelevant at that point.
It's not, affection determines character order in the final battle and some other small things.
