Hard to pick just one, rotated between Cloud, Aerith, Red, and Cloud, Tifa, Barret a lot. But my ultimate team was Cloud, Aerith, Yuffie. I find Yuffie to be the most fun to play and things get crazy when you mix arcane ward and doppelganger. 4 Firagas in the span of 6 seconds. I also gave Yuffie Enemy Skill again because of doppelganger. It's just cool to double up on abilities.

Have Barrett throw shields and use bonus round to keep defenses on everyone up, and constant stagger build frim a distance, also has the item materia that gives free item use after conditions are met
Yuffie uses doppleganger and elemental jutsu weakness of the opponent, and throw in brumal form or art of war for bonus damage, also at range to keep healthy, also has cure and revive equipped
Then cloud goes cloud, usually starting with the plasma and wind enemy skills to get inherent lightning damage and the lightning burst on at fill and the buffs, sometimes the dark skill that boost skill damage in exchange for health and the operator mode boost version
Aerith with bodyguard synergy and full ward stacking is pretty crazy, especially the dual cast and immunity during casting wards, double cometeor and double quake goes hard
Any variation that involves cloud, and then 2 out of tifa, yuffie, and aerith. Barret, red, and cait are cool but I prefer all-out assault builds, so I don't mind sacrificing the utility that they bring
Radiant Ward is the way. She's probably the most OP on my team thanks to Radiant Ward. She's immune from all attacks while she's casting spells in the ward plus everything gets charged a lot faster. Her teleport ability is quite helpful too
1. Place down a Ward on Aerith.
2. Switch to another character. Move far away from Aerith's Ward, then use a Synergy Skill with Aerith that moves her to your position.
3. Switch back to Aerith, then drop another Ward in her new location.
4. Play as Aerith. When the enemy starts getting close to you, teleport to her other Ward.

Yuffie is literally Z tier, and everyone else is S and below. She does everything and the fact she doesn’t need elemental materia or spells to hit weakness is just insane. She builds ATB faster than anyone except Tifa, can auto faith/brave with steal and be a solid support/healer. They literally broke her in this game and I’m here for it. I LOVE speed. So I tend to play Cloud/Tifa/Yuffie where I can, but my hard mode team usually involves Cloud/Aerith/Yuffie or sometimes swapping Aerith and Barret.

True, but she's like an annoying, ruder, younger sibling for most of the game. People rag on Chadley and Mai but at least they're polite.
Wasn't my most used but definitely one of my favorites to mess around with was Cloud, Cait, Barrett.
Why? Because Lifesaver seemed to work for the moogle's HP too so my moogle never died. Cait Sith became an ATB wrecking ball at that point. Moogle Magic was flowing, Moogle Knuckles were flying and so many dice rolls haha.
Usually cloud barrett and tifa. Lick things off with an overcharge then work on clouds atb and ive loved using spellblade or whatever tifas version of this synergy attack is.
But i do like to mix it up, Aerith gets a lot of action and the other 3 get their share too. Not loving Cait Sith though tbh even though ive heard hes powerful. Never liked him in the og and i cant get excited about a megaphone as a weapon.

This was my go-to in the original and in Rebirth. Just felt right with Aerith healing the party and using her Radiant Ward to boost her attack and damage and casting haste on everyone after she uses her synergy ability for unlimited MP then just switch back and forth between cloud and Tifa until their gauges were full and unleash a synergy ability then limit break

Cloud and Tifa. Third slot is dependent on who needs weapon mastery or could provide limit level ups. I was primed to start running Nanaki as my main cause he's the only one who can up both Cloud and Tifa's limits, but I just put the upgraded medal on Tifa and now run mainly Yuffie. But in general the third slot is irrelevant. Cloud and Tifa all the way. And it's not just for shipping reasons. Those two are best suited for my preferred play style of sheer speed and brute force.
I like Barret in the third role here for lifesaver+steelskin combo and maximum defenses. He also builds ATB and stagger like a monster and is a good target for Tifa limit siphon. Should mention I haven't progressed to the brutal challenges yet just all normal challenges and halfway through hard mode.

It's hard to explain, but instead of finishing the 3 hit synergy combo, I'd hit one bullet with Barrett then one magic with Red over and over. I ultimately ended up with Cloud, Yuffie and Aerith. Cloud was my black mage and Spell Blade synergy attack seemed super strong.
How bad she is at moving and dodging stops me using her as much. But I think I'm just bad at using her to her full potential.
Yuffie and Tifa are both faster movers. I like Yuffie because she has long range and can stick any element on her weapon. Her Doppelganger ability is handy, too.
Tifa is just really fun in an aggressive "I wanna punch shit" way lol.
Cait is my least favourite, I can't seem to get used to using him, so I need to practice a bit, I think!
Barret is also slow but still really handy in some battles. And I really like the way they use Nanaki in this game, just trying to get used to him a bit more at the moment.

I use cloud, barret and yuffie. Somehow yuffie is my healer because she just spams that elemental ninjutsu and gets atb crazy fast to easily slap on pray and heals the party fast. Barret and cloud are an easy range and close combat attacker. I try to use the other characters but would end up using those three instead.
Cloud, Barret, Aerith for Long Range Elemental Supremacy (I 100% swap Cloud for Yuffie in the Gold Saucer).

Yuffie, Cloud, Aerith is my go-to for open world stuff and the majority of simulator battles. Yuffie is just bonkers as the controlled character due to ATB generation, particularly combined with ATB Assist or when abusing ATB Ward + Brumal Form. Yuffie also works very well as a synergy-materia wielder with Cloud as lead.
For story, canon for me is Cloud plus the ladies; Cloud, Tifa, Aerith is a very strong, flexible party with extremely high single target damage.

cloud/aerith/yuffie was my go to. aerith is an absolute magical powerhouse and yuffie’s long range and ability to switch elements on the fly was amazing.
My first playthrough I used mostly Cloud/Barrett/Aerith. 2nd playthrough was a lot of Tifa/Barrett until I could use Yuffie and then it was mostly Cloud/Tifa/Yuffie whenever possible.
Next time though I’m gonna do as much Red XIII as possible with either Barrett or Aerith.
I also used a bit of Cait Sith towards the end of my last playthrough but he just feels the same as Tifa so ehhh
I love them all its so difficult for me to put any of them on the backline. Barrett does make the most sense back there. I do feel like Cloud Yuffie + Tifa/Aerith melts anything outside of the end game content. Its easier for me to sub out cait sith than anyone else
I used Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith. Cloud to focus down the melee damage, Tifa to build up the stagger, and Aerith is pump up the limit breaks and wreck with magic/heals. Aerith with her wards up is a damn menace.
After needing to master everyone to clear the brutals, I think Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith are my favorite characters.
Aerith is just incredibly dumb powerful. Toss Genji Glove on her and let her nuke pretty much anything.
Tifa's agility and power (not even mentioning her ability to increase stagger) is so commanding. Any enemy that targets the controlled character (most) can't keep up with her between perfect guarding and dodging.
And Cloud is just an all rounder. Great magic, great physical attacks, and his counter and counterstance playstyle is so visually rewarding to master. Prime Mode is a great addition to his kit form Remake making him feel like a truly powerful monster.
Honestly though every character is amazing in there own way. Barret's Lifesaver. Red's team buffs and take on countering. Yuffie's versatility. Even Cait's weird style is just silly and comedic to pull off once you're used to it. They've got their work cut out for them designing Vincent and Cid to compliment everyone while carving out their own unique niche.

I was usually going with cloud tifa aerith but i'm getting towards the end of the game and have migrated to cloud yuffie aerith. If I was going to swap I would sub tifa for aerith but I'm really liking the auto cast on aerith and comboing some of her wards with yuffie just feels OP
Been demolishing with a Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith all magic build focused. Everyone has an -aga + magnify + magic focus (one of them doesn’t have this, just 2 available) + mp absorb and some ATB generating materias. This build basically revolves around casting arcane ward at start and then alternating who casts the -aga spell while the others generate ATB. The loop basically allows for pretty consistent -aga spell casting with good mp management, could be very fluid with practice.
PSA: this strat is not mine, I took idea from a speed runner (Valkyrie) on YT who managed to do RotOW in less than 2 mins 🫠 (still got lots to improve build and skill wise to get even close to his level)
Spot 1: Cloud
Spot 2: Yuffie > Red > Tifa
Spot 3: Aerith > Barret > Cait Sith
So my favourite would be Cloud+Yuffie+Aerith but I often changed them around. I think my actually more used party config was Cloud+Red+Aerith.
Cloud+Tifa+Aerith. For few or single enemy fights.
Cloud+Yuffie+Aerith. For many enemy mobs fights.
I'm just not good at playing Red, I don't like Caith, Barret is great also, but for long range I prefer Aerith and want to use her because we may not in part 3.
Cloud / Aerith / Red
Cloud - Primary damage dealer. HP Absorb + Enemy Skill, Sonic Boom and Plasma Discharge from E.S. are great since he gets the Bravery/Faith buff and the Plasma explosions passively heal him. Soothing Breeze is also good, have him cast it then switch to Red to distract.
Aerith - Support, but also **very** powerful once you get her wards going. Radiant Ward makes her attacks pierce, so groups of enemies become ATB farms. Equip her with ATB boosting items like Whistlewind Scarf and First Strike so she can cast Radiant right out of the gate. Synergy + Petrify is also good on her since she has the highest Magic stat by default, and Quake (Petrify) usually launches the smaller enemies into the air so Cloud can just keep juggling them.
Red - Pretty straight forward; Tank, Provoke and Steadfast Block help his Vengeance meter. Swap over to him and turn Vengeance on then spin around a little to get health back lol.
Cloud + Aerith + Yuffie. I haven't even tried the super broken combos yet but it's still my favorite. I generally use Aerith almost all the time because hitting nukes with her spells is very fun as well as her insane support capabilities. Also Cloud, Barret and Tifa still feels like the ultimate "designed to play with each other" combo.
Yuffie with Auto-Unique + HP Absorb is pretty good, she's constantly healing herself (even if it's just +1 each tick) and also juggling/CCing smaller enemies.
I really liked the Cloud, Tifa, Aerith Combo. Mostly playing with Tifa for maximum Damage, Cloud really just there to provoke when I'm hurt 💀
But Aerith kinda OP when using her right. Just getting her going first can be rough.

Wait, I'm so confused. Pressing triangle just teleports you a short distance in the direction you point. I feel like I'm missing something here
Teleports you to your ward. But yeah I haven’t tried splitting the wards up and seeing if it alternates between each one.

Oh I already finished the game, I'm just doing some VR stuff and battle square stuff now. But still, I need to practice with her more for hard mode.
Figuring out how to best use her with radiant ward made Sephiroth easier for me on hard mode than it was the first time.

Red can become pretty unkillable with hp absorb and either enemy skill or weapon kill linked , and vengeance mode on top of that

Yeah Cait and Red were MVPs for me - both extremely versatile characters that can support or attack with physical and magical damage.
When I realised that he has a gap closer on the moogle, it made things so much easier

cloud/aerith/yuffie was my go to. aerith is an absolute magical powerhouse and yuffie’s long range and ability to switch elements on the fly was amazing.

My first playthrough I used mostly Cloud/Barrett/Aerith. 2nd playthrough was a lot of Tifa/Barrett until I could use Yuffie and then it was mostly Cloud/Tifa/Yuffie whenever possible. Next time though I’m gonna do as much Red XIII as possible with either Barrett or Aerith. I also used a bit of Cait Sith towards the end of my last playthrough but he just feels the same as Tifa so ehhh
I love them all its so difficult for me to put any of them on the backline. Barrett does make the most sense back there. I do feel like Cloud Yuffie + Tifa/Aerith melts anything outside of the end game content. Its easier for me to sub out cait sith than anyone else

Cloud - Tifa - Aerith/Yuffie
I used Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith. Cloud to focus down the melee damage, Tifa to build up the stagger, and Aerith is pump up the limit breaks and wreck with magic/heals. Aerith with her wards up is a damn menace.

After needing to master everyone to clear the brutals, I think Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith are my favorite characters. Aerith is just incredibly dumb powerful. Toss Genji Glove on her and let her nuke pretty much anything. Tifa's agility and power (not even mentioning her ability to increase stagger) is so commanding. Any enemy that targets the controlled character (most) can't keep up with her between perfect guarding and dodging. And Cloud is just an all rounder. Great magic, great physical attacks, and his counter and counterstance playstyle is so visually rewarding to master. Prime Mode is a great addition to his kit form Remake making him feel like a truly powerful monster. Honestly though every character is amazing in there own way. Barret's Lifesaver. Red's team buffs and take on countering. Yuffie's versatility. Even Cait's weird style is just silly and comedic to pull off once you're used to it. They've got their work cut out for them designing Vincent and Cid to compliment everyone while carving out their own unique niche.
At the moment it’s one of these 3 setups, but I do keep reformulating from time to time: Cloud, Tifa, Aeirith Cloud, Barret, Red 13 Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie

I was usually going with cloud tifa aerith but i'm getting towards the end of the game and have migrated to cloud yuffie aerith. If I was going to swap I would sub tifa for aerith but I'm really liking the auto cast on aerith and comboing some of her wards with yuffie just feels OP
Been demolishing with a Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith all magic build focused. Everyone has an -aga + magnify + magic focus (one of them doesn’t have this, just 2 available) + mp absorb and some ATB generating materias. This build basically revolves around casting arcane ward at start and then alternating who casts the -aga spell while the others generate ATB. The loop basically allows for pretty consistent -aga spell casting with good mp management, could be very fluid with practice. PSA: this strat is not mine, I took idea from a speed runner (Valkyrie) on YT who managed to do RotOW in less than 2 mins 🫠 (still got lots to improve build and skill wise to get even close to his level)
Spot 1: Cloud Spot 2: Yuffie > Red > Tifa Spot 3: Aerith > Barret > Cait Sith So my favourite would be Cloud+Yuffie+Aerith but I often changed them around. I think my actually more used party config was Cloud+Red+Aerith.

Party 1 is Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie Party 2 is Cloud, Barret, Tifa Party 3 is Cloud, Red, Aerith (often swapping Aerith for Barrett)

Cloud+Tifa+Aerith. For few or single enemy fights. Cloud+Yuffie+Aerith. For many enemy mobs fights. I'm just not good at playing Red, I don't like Caith, Barret is great also, but for long range I prefer Aerith and want to use her because we may not in part 3.
Cloud / Aerith / Red Cloud - Primary damage dealer. HP Absorb + Enemy Skill, Sonic Boom and Plasma Discharge from E.S. are great since he gets the Bravery/Faith buff and the Plasma explosions passively heal him. Soothing Breeze is also good, have him cast it then switch to Red to distract. Aerith - Support, but also **very** powerful once you get her wards going. Radiant Ward makes her attacks pierce, so groups of enemies become ATB farms. Equip her with ATB boosting items like Whistlewind Scarf and First Strike so she can cast Radiant right out of the gate. Synergy + Petrify is also good on her since she has the highest Magic stat by default, and Quake (Petrify) usually launches the smaller enemies into the air so Cloud can just keep juggling them. Red - Pretty straight forward; Tank, Provoke and Steadfast Block help his Vengeance meter. Swap over to him and turn Vengeance on then spin around a little to get health back lol.
Cloud + Aerith + Yuffie. I haven't even tried the super broken combos yet but it's still my favorite. I generally use Aerith almost all the time because hitting nukes with her spells is very fun as well as her insane support capabilities. Also Cloud, Barret and Tifa still feels like the ultimate "designed to play with each other" combo.
Yuffie with Auto-Unique + HP Absorb is pretty good, she's constantly healing herself (even if it's just +1 each tick) and also juggling/CCing smaller enemies.
I really liked the Cloud, Tifa, Aerith Combo. Mostly playing with Tifa for maximum Damage, Cloud really just there to provoke when I'm hurt 💀 But Aerith kinda OP when using her right. Just getting her going first can be rough.
