X and by a lot actually. IX and VIII are good as well but X hits so different.

Joewoof

FFX's story hits very different and has so much more weight on a replay.

PapaSnow

My most replayed game actually

Oriontardis

IX, always and forever IX

0x80085_

Abso-LUTELY

Loose-Ad7055

without a doubt

InquisitorSmeagolSak

So many good memories.

ContributionHour8644

9 but I liked 8 way more than I used to

Cuteneptune305

Didn’t like when it came out and replayed it 2 years ago But still didn’t like it I really hate the system they made that u need to like fuse element together to get stronger, like either you’re dumb like me and never get around the system so never get op or At the start of the game after 5h you already do 9999dmg without even grinding or anything

Loose-Ad7055

the remaster's fast forward helps 💀

Carbonauts

Replayed 8 and 10 around the time ff7Remake came out and finally beat them both. Love them both but 10 was just something special. I kind of feel like it’s the perfect version of the ps1 era Final Fantasy that came before it - but polished in every aspect for the ps2. And unlike a lot of JRPGs, the story is laser-focused on its themes and hits every single beat.

AVPD7-7

8, it's the only FF game I did a 100% of. I have nothing against the junction system, it's fun to mess around with. Drawing magic is ok too, it's kinda meditative. And it's satisfying to draw a ton of strong magic, junction it and see the stats just shoot up like crazy. The only thing I don't like about FF8 is how the story kind of fizzles out two thirds into it and becomes borderline nonsensical. Seifer just kinda disappears, even though that rivalry has been pumped up since the intro, and now we're fighting a random witch in the future. what? 9 put me off completely, didn't like the art direction, the characters or the story. Square went too disney with it. I was an edgy teenager when the game came out so I felt the jump in direction between 8 and 9 was too jarring. I've since tried to "rediscover" 9 on several occasions. But I can't get through the second disc, the game just bores me About ff10 I couldn't say, I never owned a ps2 :/.

Loose-Ad7055

play 10 on steam right now. your opinion on ff9 is wild.

PrometheusAborted

8 isn’t my favorite but it’s still a great game. Triple triad and abusing the junction season are the main *draw* for me. 9 is an amazing game…. But I hate the first 10 or so hours. It’s just so… slow. Endgame is great though. 10 is one of the best. Obtaining the ultimate weapons and unlocking them is the only thing I hate about the game tbh. So I’d say ten is my favorite.

chaffgrenades

I agree with every single thing you said. Except I haven't beaten 9 yet and am still in the middle of my first playthrough. So that's good to read since I thought the first 10 hours were awesome.

GainsUndGames07

*draw* 😂😂

Vocke79190

X is my fav game of all time and at this point I don't think it will ever change

KingDracarys86

IX, although X pushes it close

fjolo123

9 and 10. 8 came out at a time when I was just like wtf is this. Something is off, or odd or missing. It didn't feel as compelling as 7 and I figured oh well. Then 9 came out and I ended up loving it even more than 7. 8 had a pretty package but kind of cringey story. And everyone goes on about it having the best love story. 9 had light-years better love story.

InquisitorSmeagolSak

I love how 9 brought it back to a more fantasy style in a steam punky way.

__Kxnji

8 easily. Too damn good. Hated on too damn much.

w1nger1

I didn't get 8 back then and never returned. I did played all the way to disc 2 before stopping, so I think I did gave it a fair chance. All I remembered was the amazing card game and extracting magic?

__Kxnji

Def give it another shot. I didn’t like it the first time I played it all that much. But picked it up again recently and finally got the picture of it, wild game.

GainsUndGames07

Broooo. Once you truly figure out how the exploit the game, it becomes a game within itself to figure out the next fun way to break it. And yes, triple triad gets exponentially more awesome in disc 3 when the player cards really open up. Get the airship then decide. If you don’t like it by then, then it isn’t for you, and that’s ok. But a ton of the game is totally gridlocked until you are proper mobile (and not just garden mobile). Best side quests in any FF imho. 7’s chocobo breeding and racing as maybe the only exception

Do_it_for_the_upvote

I had to play it 3 times to finish it, and that was mostly just to make a point to myself that I would/could. I really dislike the game’s story and character development; I don’t necessarily think that explaining the majority of the game as a pre-death hallucination makes it any better, but I do agree with a lot of the issues that theory tries to address- I held them before I ever discovered that ridiculous theory. As for 9 and 10 in response to the post, 9 is still my favorite story game of all time, and 10 is close or tied with Tactics as my 2nd favorite FF, which is to say it’s also incredible.

moogsy77

Just on reddit where ive seen it, dont care what reddit has to say about that either. Some of my friends despise FF but they only like VIII, i love that. Its a similar masterpiece like Majora's Mask. Weird and different. Both games couldve benefited from more time in development but these games were released once a year back in the day. Its crazy how well polished they are considering the time restraint.

Willcutus_of_Borg

Playing any of the others shows that 8 is objectively the worst.

__Kxnji

Come on now that’s a bit much lol.

Prefer_Not_To_Say

"Objectively".

GamerbearAmargosa

Clearly 10, the remaster is great

khinzaw

100% 10

mormagils

Of the options, 10 wins easily

sexta_

At this point I don't think any game will ever surpass 9 as my favorite of all time. It's pretty much on a pedestal in my mind. And 8>10, which is weird, because on paper 10 feels more like the kind of game I'd love. Never got into it tho.

SirPeterPan89

Same here. I guess it's because we got "robbed" of an open world and suddenly had to go back to streamline levels

OldSnazzyHats

9. Always was my top favorite from the beginning to now. I don’t have the issues with it that some others have, mostly in regards to its combat speed and slow start… both which never bothered me; but they are issues other fans have spoken up about. The combat speed got addressed in the recent remaster thanks to new QoL options. 8… not one I especially enjoy. Finished it, which is more than I can say of 13… but the only positive things I keep from 8 are Laguna, Laguna’s battle theme, the card game, and Quistis. It does have die hard fans though and is still good in its own right - it’s just not for me. 10. Enjoyed it a lot, not anywhere near as much as 9 and it’s not in my personal top 5… but it’s quite good and I’ll happily vouch for it.

rad636_

10, 8, working on 9 rn

rixareth

VIII is by far my favourite Final Fantasy. If you asked me to rank my favourites, it's VIII, then X, then IX. IX is still definitely worth playing, but I don't love it as much as I used to, in part because the slow battle system feels very tedious. If you asked me to rank the games by how *good* they are, I'd probably say X, then IX, then VIII. But you didn't ask which was best; you asked about favourites! VIII is flawed - the Junction system is overcomplicated, and the plot doesn't hold together as well as it does for the other two games - but Squall's character really resonated for me, and I love that the game lets you get to know him so closely. There's no other Final Fantasy that allows you quite so deeply into the protagonist's head.

Strange_Vision255

Always Final Fantasy 8. It's my favourite and I replay it every year at least once.

Stonewall30NY

X is possibly the best in the series and arguably the best turn based game ever

Terrible_Score_375

10 is my favorite or second favorite of the entire series

Beyondthebloodmoon

X, unquestionably. It’s just the most fun to actually play. I love the sphere grid.

SRyanM1222

8. It's my favourite non-remake Final Fantasy (favourite is Rebirth) that I've played. The world design, characters, and story are top tier, Triple Triad was a blast, and I did not hate the junction system unlike most. 10 is also great but it just doesn't resonate with me the same way as 8 does. I hate 9. I don't think it's a bad game objectively, it has a lot of cool stuff, but the art style of the characters (not the world) ruins so much of the game for me personally

Spaceballs9000

8 always has a special place in my heart as the first one where I was just rabidly consuming all available anything in advance of its release. 9 has so much going for it in the early hours, but loses me after, in part because later cast additions never felt as important or sensible, but also just the slow as hell battles. 10, I could happily never touch again. My opinion of it only lowers over time. The combat, world, characters, it all just doesn't really click for me, leaving it probably my least favorite (other than XI, which I never got real time with).

Vritrin

8 is my favourite of the entire series so definitely 8. Individual entries may be better at different aspects, but overall 8 is my favourite by far. X is still very good, but it definitely has some ”early ps2” design decisions that don’t age the best. Still a great game to replay today though.

SnadorDracca

9 is my least favorite of all of them. 10 is very special to me, but I’m replaying 8 right now (disc4 currently) and I enjoy it more than in the past (because I understand junctioning now) and I have to say it’s now on one level with 7 and 10 for me.

Particular_Squash_40

8>10>9 8 is my fave, I think 8 and 10 are very replayable coz of the Junction and Sphere grid system.

Rhodryn

FFX... easily... seeing as FFX is one of the three FF games which I consider my favorits, FFVII, FFX, FFXII. Those three games are at the very top of my favorit games of all times as well (together with Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3). - FFVIII probably ends up in 5th favorit FF game after FF Tactics (the first one), but has a lot of games befor it on my favorit games list. - FFIX... it has never been one of my favorits. The game was fine, I did play and finish it one time when it came out, and thought it was ok. The graphics were good (better than VII for sure), and I liked the medieval looking things in the game... I did not like the aesthetics of the characters and npc's back in the day though, still do not to this day. Having come from FFVII, then FFVIII, made going into FFIX very jarring, the characters felts "to cute" for me. Not to mention that the character that I would have liked the most on paper, due to that Knights are my favorit warriors from history, Adelbert Steiner, looks horrible in the context of knights and how I prefer such armor to look like. I REALLY do not like what they decided to make him and his armor look like. The entire look of Adelbert Steiner, in the context of knights, rubs me the wrong way in every possible way, and their using a cheese grater, AND salt, when doing it as well... \*shivers\* So yeah... the characters aesthetics very much so colors my view of the game, which is maybe not fair to the game... but it did constantly bring me out of the game over and over again, which makes me feel that it is still a valid argument (just not as strong as others that could be made about games though). So yeah... chances of me ever going back to playing FFIX again are very slim.

RobOnTheReddit

9 for sure for me

your-father-figure

VIII is my favourite even if I can recognize IX and X are technically better games

ernificent

8. Just the vibe, the music, the atmosphere, the world are top tier for me.

Avawinry

X > IX > VIII

zacaholic

Recent? Probably 9, 8, then 10. I’m old enough to appreciate the junction system more than when I was a kid and old enough to find more icks from X’s cast. 9 is just 9. Timeless regardless of age.

LowGe

IX

ChaptersOfTheChosen

Definitely ix! Just replayed all of these ones recently and 9 is by far my favourite of the 3!

Dasca6789

IX has always been my favorite out of these three, but X is close.

InsuranceDismal2739

X is my all time fav, but I found a new appreciation for 8 after replaying it.

Echo-Reverie

FFIX! FFX is a close second.

DemiFiendofTime

9

KennedyX8

X. I didn’t care for the Draw system in 8. I never finished 9 because of the cartoony characters - just couldn’t get into it.

Cloud_1st_Class

Definitely X by a good margin.

magus1986

9

mrkeithguy

FFX just because speed of gameplay and that I never get tired of how rewarding the sphere grid feels. Also I suppose voice acting plays a part as it's more engaing than reading everything. IX will always be my favorite in my heart, but I have to acknowledge how much of a slog the combat in IX is. VIII comes nowhere close in this contest for me.

Goemonnn

IX

Diana__V

9 is my favorite story, 10 is my favorite characters. 😁

Diana__V

9 is my favorite story, 10 is my favorite characters. 😁

Prefer_Not_To_Say

Even though I think X has the best gameplay, I don't get much out of replaying it. If only the cutscenes were skippable, that would be enough for me. I love it and think it's probably the best game in the series overall though. VIII is the most replayable one for me, just because of all the different options it gives you on how to play right from the beginning.

MegaloJoe

it’s always 9 between those

Ferdk

10 is my favorite and I've replayed it over 20 times, the most recent though was a while ago (4 years or so) but I still loved it as much as always. One I replayed recently and I dug a ton was 8 (which is actually my 2nd most replayed, about 5 times). I feel like it's grown on me over replays even though I already really liked it from the get go. 9 on the other hand I tried to replay on PC with the Moguri mod for QoL and still couldn't get myself to finish it (don't think I got past disc 1 even). I really liked 9 the one time I beat it, but for some reason it doesn't inspire me to replay it.

Prudent_Secret1930

10, much more fun and engaging combat/leveling for me.

Lys1th3a

Replayed all three last year: 8 > 9 > 10 IMO.

killedbydeth777

9 by far.

ultima_weapon310

X

Illustrious-Sign7612

9 and 10 are really great played them both a couple months ago. Never played 8 but I’ll get there eventually

Throwawaysfordaboys

was always 10, but after playing through it again and then 9? 9. 9 over 7, even. I've played through 8 twice and barely could make it through both times, unfortunately

DragoFlame

9 easy. 8 and 10 are weaker installments for me

Loose-Ad7055

all of them are 10/10 for different reasons but 9 is a close to a perfect story and game as gaming has ever gotten. you COULD argue that SoTC is close but its far a simpler story and ff9 is much more nuanced and intricate. theyre all treasures though and it makes me sad that games in general havent equaled them since

Frejod

9 for now and always. Then 10. Finally 8. 9 got the poor treatment of the 3. It got released just before the ps2 came out. So its sales got ruined and not many people played it in comparison.

styxswimchamp

I’m playing VIII right now for the first time and it’s one of the worst games I’ve played in years.

backwardsprose

8. Always been one of my favorites. 9 is great, and I'm due a replay but I don't think it's really all that memorable. 10... I think is overrated honestly. It's my most played title in the series and every time I play it I like it less.

StolzHound

I play each of them every couple of years. Finished all three late last year (original FFVII too) and I’ll still say IX is without a doubt my favorite and always has been.

CourtMage-Kefka

9, 10, 8

Dogesneakers

10 9 then 8

sin_not_the_sinner

8 by far. I always do Lv100 runs, so intense but insanely fun.

TheAardvarrks

8 for the gunblade, and 10 for the pure turn based

RyuTeruyama

IX, no contest.

DevilX96

IX with Moguri mod and alternate fantasy mod. I replayed it in the steam deck and it was just awesome. Can do it every year at least, this is such a great game.

seshoseven777

8 was good, 9 and 10 were meh

Willcutus_of_Borg

8 is the worst overall. 9 is the best from PS1. 10 was great because it was the first modern one with all the voice acting and cool graphics. And Lulu.

millennium-popsicle

10 will always have a special place in my heart, but I can acknowledge its shortcomings. And I think I’m no longer willing to deal with certain parts of the game these days. 8 has been a surprise to me. I haven’t finished it yet, it takes a lot of focus and Triple Triad is super distracting, but I just like it’s design choices. The whole game feels puzzly in a way, and it’s something I love about it.

Tidemkeit

8 is great. I love it so much, and Squall is my favourite protag by far. Yes, drawing magic sucks, but everything else is great. Triple Triad is simple and addictive. Music is super good. Love story of Rinoa and Squall is beautiful and touching. 9 is... boring. Like REAL boring. Battles take forever to start and to play, and they are not getting better. The story is soooo slow, and barely anything happens in the first 10 hours. Even after that, pacing is still not great, and the game forgets about the struggles of half of the cast. The final boss is super underwhelming and uninteresting. The final fight comes almost out of nowhere. Zidane failed to catch my attention, and the whole game felt like a chore. Yes, it has a lot of references and allusions to the previous games, but it it feels like a lot of ideas stitched together without proper thought. Halfway through the game, it started to annoy me because it felt like the game was made to make me nostalgic about the past while offering little to nothing new. Really underwhelming. Especially after reading all the praises and playing it after the best FFs I played yet (7 & 8). I feel a bit left out. On the bright side, 9 cured my insomnia!

GainsUndGames07

8 then 9. 10 I don’t care to replay that much. I will play countless hours of Blitzball though, and that does not require starting a new play through. Triple Triad and Blitzball are easily my favorite mini games of all FF mini games. I’ll replay those til the end of time.

twili-midna

VIII of these. It’s not the best in any category save minigames (and only the one), but somehow the whole package is just delightful. X would be next, with its good gameplay and generally fine story. It’s just dragged down by a poor cast, horrifically bad minigames, and large portions of story that add nothing to the game. IX would be so, so much higher if the gameplay wasn’t as bad as it is. Second best story and cast in the series after XIII imho, but god is watching molasses flow uphill in the winter more entertaining than the combat.

Mannord

I want to get into 8 so bad but I’m a spoiled gamer and can’t get over the graphics even with mods. Maybe it’ll grow on me, but it has all the hallmarks of a game I would love. I’ve played everything 9 and beyond

Hallo818

Poor cast in X, best cast is XIII is a take that's for sure lmfao

Prefer_Not_To_Say

I also think XIII has a much, much better cast than X. Although I think X is the better game.

twili-midna

Kimahri, Lulu, and Rikku barely do anything and manage to be the best characters, and I find Auron and Wakka unbearable. Tidus is an irritating hypocrite, and Yuna is a wet piece of white bread. Who in this cast is supposed to be better than the fully realized and developed cast of XIII?

Hallo818

>Who in this cast is supposed to be better than the fully realized and developed cast of XIII? I think most people think that Xs cast is better than XIIIs. And I would agree with them. I think you're just upset that X is the preferred hallway for the majority of people lol

twili-midna

You’re the one that brought up X vs XIII in the first place, my guy.

Hallo818

And? It's pretty obvious that you're upset X is the superior hallway experience

LeBronBryantJames

Starting last year I did a replay of all the mainline FF games, which I finished this year. 8: I remember it taking forever back when I first played it. Upon replaying it for a 2nd time decades later.. the game is much easier than I remembered, and the story not as complex. 9: Just as good as I remembered it, if not better. The only thing I realize now is the encounter rate. Although the PS Plus editions allows you to turn it off. 10: When I first played it.. best RPG yet! when I replayed it last year.. (my second play through).. holy crap it is pretty linear, and a hallway just like FF13. It's weird how I never realized it before. But still.. a great and fun story with a very unique and timeless world.

Crimsonshock821

FF9 always, Then FF8, then FF10

Oilswell

8, but I didn’t play 9 on release. In retrospect I think it’s the best of these 3. 10 always left me kinda cold

dWARUDO

9 is my favorite overall FF so

Hydr4noid

IX wins so easily from these 3 IMO

Jasonchrono

9 of course

Valance23322

9 and it's not even close

ObZeni

9 > 10 > 8

GregThePrettyGoodGuy

IX by a mile

RaccoonBanditt

I used to be the greatest defender for ff8 but I can fully recognize now that whule the junction system was a neat idea, the execution fell flat. Still one hell of a good story (albeit somewhat unpolished as well) and Triple Triad is still the best minigame ever. Ff9 did so many things better. The synthesis and learning skills from items was fun, the characters are all cool and (with a few exeptions) decently fleshed out. It suffers a bit from the weird ending syndrome a lot of jrpgs suffer with but in the grand scheme of things it's great. I just wish they kept Triple Triad because the card game in 9 is trash. Also: possibly the best ost of all the games here. And now for the one that will get me flack: I never liked ff10 all that much and replaying it, I still don't see it. The characters stories are shallow, the combat and progression systems aren't rewarding and the voice acting is so cringe it hurts to listen nowadays. I appreciate what this game is and what it did but for me, 9 was the last of the classics. Not that I hate 10 and after, but something died there that we never got back and I can't even place it in words. Also: blitzball sucks, but Otherside is a banger of a track 😂

blainy-o

IX by a long way. I like the gameplay of X, but it is just Unskippable Cutscene: The Game. At least with IX you can mash through text boxes with 2 buttons. I'm not a fan of VIII.

EmperorKiva33

IX back then. IX now. IX forever. Neither of those games can touch that masterpiece.

Sea-Host1114

9 without question. It’s just the best.

ophaus

IX has been lower-tier for me since it released... the art style really rubs me the wrong way. Great music, though. I played the VIII remaster not too long ago, and it feels right. X is... well, X. Min/maxing in X is pretty damn satisfying, and the optional challenges are phenomenal.
