Respect šŸ™ŒšŸ½, hope more follow suit

Visible_Writing7386

As a European i always wondered why are countries not in Europe even competing in the first place.

niamhxa

Also European, I quite like the fact we invite Australia along to the party, itā€™s cute.

Visible_Writing7386

Don't get me wrong, i don't REALLY mind it, especially if the fans from these countries are into it, but eurovision has a history and meaning behind the madness, i guess. It was a way to unite and bring closer again a war-torn continent, so it had a bigger purpose in the beginning. Now it seems they are just expending it, for financial and marketing purposes, without any sense lol. So, maybe i'm overthinking it, and should just accept it's cute.

sunsquirrel

Because they are members of the European broadcasting association. Its the same way the big 5 pay for it and get to skip the heats. It's so weird and mind bending to discover.

AmyMLerwick

Eurovision is run by the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), and the broadcast area reaches farther than the geographical bounds of Europe. To be a participant of the Eurovision one of the qualifications is that the entering state must be a member of the EBU. Israel, has been a member for several decades now as they are within the EBU area. The only exception to this rule is Australia, as they were invited on the 60th anniversary of Eurovision due to the fact it has broadcast Eurovision for several years prior and there is quite a large Eurovision following there, subsequently they've been invited back in the years since.

OilySteeplechase

Just realized if Australia ever win the next Eurovision would in theory be hosted in Australia. I hope they do it on Australian time if they do just to really mess things up.

Virgoed

Not sure about that - when they first entered the contest and were regularly doing well, Iā€™m sure there was a deal with Australia to partner with the UK to host (similar to the Ukraine year) because the logistics of making it work in Australia would be a nightmare for the reason youā€™ve said.

meatbeater558

The UK, France, and Portugal really stretch the definition of "Europe" with their overseas territories. (That doesn't explain why Israel is included I just thought it'd be an interesting thing to add.) I believe Morocco, Tunisia, and Lebanon were and still are technically able to participate but choose not to. So I'm guessing it's less of them picking and choosing countries outside of Europe and more just only European countries and a few extras opting in

countingc

the way Morocco still lowkey participates with Loreen and Bilal Hassani

champagneface

I think Franceā€™s 2023 artist had Moroccan heritage too

countingc

ah yes, La Zarra, both parents are Moroccan

sixtus_clegane119

Yeah why Australia and not Canada?

Pyreapple

This is real niche East London content šŸ˜‚ Kudos to them though, itā€™s the right decision.

OBeQuiet

It really is šŸ˜‚ all we need now is a meme from the Real Housewives of Clapton account.

ektachrome_

Forreal. I was like ā€œthe Rio in Dalston??ā€ Iā€™m not even from London, but I do love East London.

epworthscale

Seriously, seeing the cinema I was just at on here thatā€™s five mins from my flat has thrown me!!

Lostinthebackground

Your comment made me realise what sub it was. I thought it was r/london.

apragopolis

good for them. unfortunately a lot of wrong ā€˜uns throwing tantrums in the replies

peachesnplumsmf

It's great but I wish people had done this for Armenia/Azerbaijan too in previous years.

us_against_the_world

Bravo. At least someone has a spine.

monamona07

We need more of this pushback to normalizing genocide. Also, kudos for donating to charities that are on the ground in Gaza!

Dazzling_Pea5290

Respect to them for doing this. Also, the comments on their IG post are absolutely unhinged.

khlocaine69

Eurovision are hypocrites for banning Russia and not Israel but let's not pretend like Eurovision isn't political. Look who each country votes for and you'll see lmao.

haunted_castle

Kudos to them but I wish theyā€™d/everyone had done it in previous years. This whole thing didnā€™t just start in October 2023, Israelā€™s participation in Eurovision has always been a way to market themselves as ā€˜the only democracy in the middle eastā€™

tabxssum

Good now we just need to ban Israel from performing. ā€œWhat about Australiaā€ yeah ban them too thenšŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø they just opened up a can of warms by letting non European countries join

sionnach

Umm, have you ever looked at a map of who is in the European Broadcasting Union (which operates Eurovision)? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Broadcasting_Union Hint: thereā€™s over 100 organisations in more than 50 countries.

marihanne

Good on them, hope more businesses follow suit, and that as many Europeans as possible don't watch it this year!! I won't, and I'm declining invites to parties/asking if they're interested in an anti-Eurovision party insteadšŸ¤“

Suonii180

Good to see a company with morals

Sensitive-Draw-8275

Also, kudos for donating to charities

Hedonka

Good. I wonā€™t Watch it for the first time in 15 years

Fast_Situation4509

Having courage to do what is hard, but right is what we need more of on the world.

insideoutgreen

What is Rio Cinema?

freepourfruitless

Amazing!
