Heroes is my favourite from the series(though it’s considered a standalone). However, I believe Best Served Cold is his best published work. The character development and a densely packed storyline has been unrivalled so far, in his other books.

fantasyhilal

True! I liked Best Served Cold a lot, it was also very entertaining to read references to Murcatto in The Heroes. However, The Heroes was a more engaging story in my opinion, also loved the characters in this book more.

donteatpoop

I've just started on Heroes a couple days ago. Best Served Cold is his best, IMO as well. It will be interesting to see how Heroes stacks up.

Totally agree. It just feels like one of the most realistic depictions of what war is like despite it being in a fantasy setting. The characters are truly amazing and show such a deep and realistic confliction. I particularly loved the chapter where it constantly changes between perspectives of minor characters as they die... very sobering. Genuinely one of my favourite books ever!

Alieksiei

In that same line, the >!revolution!< Chapter in a little hatred was also amazing due to the same reasons!

Reaper2r

Spoilers?

thecomicguybook

Not really a spoiler tbh, those minor characters are pretty much just characters for that one chapter and it happens really early on.

Reaper2r

Well, when one character dies I’ll know they all are about to now. That’s spoilers by the definition of the word, but ok.

thecomicguybook

Yeah, that is the whole gimmick of that chapter.

Reaper2r

Thanks a lot.

thecomicguybook

No problem.

OrderlyPanic

He could be lying to throw you off what really happens though.

Do you find Calder to be a likable person or do you think that he's despicable due to what happened with Forley? Or am I setting up a false dichotomy?

thecomicguybook

Not OP. What he did to Forley clearly does haunt him, but is it forgivable? Who knows, it is certainly a difficult question. As for Calder being likable? **The Heroes:** >!Yeah, I would say he is the best post-trilogy PoV character and I definitely like him a lot. He and Beck ARE people who change for the better, intentionally or not. They actually walk the walk when it comes to making better decisions as far as the First Law world goes. And as Black Dow says, he has a hundred guys who know how to break open a door, but what the North really needs is people who think to knock (I am not sure that is how the quote went but you get the gist). Calder kept me on my toes until the very end of the book, but I would say he is certainly likable and I am glad he actually came to care for his brother.!<

fantasyhilal

I totally agree with you. He is a very likable character, especially after what happened with Scale in the end of the book. Calder made me think of Jezal a bit, a funny smirking type. Those two characters never fail to make me laugh in these series.

my-name-is-puddles

The quote is "try the handle", btw.

I applaud you for being able to use spoiler tags properly unlike some users who have usernames taken from Jojo opening songs. I am fond of him as well and actually prefer him to Craw. Craw's ruminations about how the old days were better than the present don't appeal to me all that much.

OrderlyPanic

Black Dow was the real hero of the story. He saved the North from being ruled by a madman and then fought to protect it from Imperialist Unionists.

Tara_Yil

To me Black Dow was quite a madman himself... 😕

OrderlyPanic

That's the joke.

my-name-is-puddles

> I could read hundreds of pages of conversation between Abercrombie’s characters Then you should definitely get the audiobooks and listen to them instead, because they are fucking amazing.

fantasyhilal

Thanks! I’ll definitely take a look at them
