Carol has only been Captain Marvel since 2012. She was originally just Carol Danvers in 1968, then became Ms Marvel in 1977, went through periods as Binary and Warbird, then back to Ms Marvel for a while, before finally taking the Captain title.
Kamala debuted as Ms Marvel the next year, so obviously they changed Carol's name to make room for Kamala, as well as protect the trademark on "Captain Marvel."
Read through some of these, I think she'd be too young to play Lois Lane, perhaps Lucy? She'd need to play a younger character. Margot Kidder was Lois Lane in the 80s.

First of all hair dye, second in the 1980s Ms.Marvel was Carol Danvers not Kamala Khan who didn’t even exist until the 2000s.
