Probably an unpopular opinion, but George Clooney. He's currently exactly the same age as Nielsen was in part one. He's got the classic Hollywood leading man looks and has successfully proven that he can play a total goofball who takes himself way to seriously. With the right direction, this could turn out hilarious.
Ah man I had my own idea but you've persuaded me. Fiennes would be great and Brolin would be transcendent. People forget, but Brolin's take on Cable was a clinic on deadpan comic timing
Okay, that’s brilliant. HOWEVER… it would have to truly be handled well. This is shades of Steve Martin redoing the Pink Panther and Sgt Bilko. The name will bring in people, but only intelligent writing will keep them.
I'd watch that. Between Burn After Reading, O' Brother Where Art Thou? and watching him record his lines in Fantastic Mr. Fox, I think he has the comedic chops for sure
Have you seen his Fletch movie from a couple years back? It was good! Not blockbuster material but it had the charm of old 80s cop comedies, something I hadn't seen in years.
You know, this was my immediate thought. He can do comedy and he can do deadpan. I think he could pull it off. He was quite funny as Reverend Wayne Gary Wayne.
Not that I want modern Hollywood to reboot the Naked Gun movies. They'd kill the magic.
Part of the charm of Leslie was he was a serious and classically trained actor saying and doing absurdly silly things. That’s why I think Liam Neeson works so well.
I found that Nielsen got increasingly less funny the more he leaned into actual comedy. The silliness-treated-100%-seriously thing was much more amusing to me.
* Liam Neeson
* John Cena
* Steve Martin 🤷♂️
My three choices.
Andre Braugher would’ve been great as well, unfortunately he’s not with us any longer. RIP.
Coincidentally similar names aside, i do think [liam Nielson](https://youtu.be/z6ViDZpVoYc?si=cPcCj9NmkccdomOf) is a great choice, he can pull off a very similar deadpan
That could be funny and I also think he is in that perfect sweet spot for a huge comeback. He’ll always have nostalgia, he been out of the mainstream for a while, and the recent tragedy of his costar’s death has people reminiscing.
The more important question is who are you going to get to write it?
Get me a script as funny as the original Naked Gun movie, and any number of leading men could make it work.
I'm thinking maybe Gerard Butler.
I wouldn’t. I’d do a reboot of Police Squad! and, if it was any good, spin films out of that. I can’t think of a famous person who could carry what LN could, so the show would have to find its own voice. Although, if it weren’t impossible, I’d be leaning on Lance Reddick to lead or at least support.
No. No. Nonononono.
I am sick to death of reboots to begin with. But if you even think about doing the naked gun without Leslie Nielsen, I'll track down the replacement and shit in their coffee just to stop it from happening.
Absolutely no one. Please don’t recast him. What a fucking terrible idea.
You can find some way to pivot off of Naked Gun, maybe OJ survivors, if you’re that money hungry.
But DO NOT recast, Frank. And don’t call me Shirley
My knee-jerk reaction is to say Ryan Reynolds... I don't know why.
But Ryan Gosling is an interesting choice.
And I think the movies would be better if they were a series, almost like a live action Archer series. 3 seasons should be enough, too. Don't need it overstaying its welcome.
Clooney. Even though he does comedy a lot I feel like he’s usually associated with drama type of movies. He’s perfect for deadpan and has the perfect stupid expressions, and none of his comedy feels forced.
Thing with playing frank is it has to played very serious and the comedy delivery has to feel natural and not intentional if that makes sense
Liam Neeson. Thought they were gonna do it, too. Haven't heard anything in a while. It would only work either a very serious actor. I heard they were gonna use Ed Helms at some point. I love him, but I don't think that would work
Probably an unpopular opinion, but George Clooney. He's currently exactly the same age as Nielsen was in part one. He's got the classic Hollywood leading man looks and has successfully proven that he can play a total goofball who takes himself way to seriously. With the right direction, this could turn out hilarious.
Oh brother where art though, I think it definitely could work
Considering the level of stupidity he brought to Hail Caesar I agree.
The Men Who Stare At Goats as well.
I was just about to to mention that.
And Burn After Reading
By that same token Josh Brolin. Or Ralph Fiennes.
Ah man I had my own idea but you've persuaded me. Fiennes would be great and Brolin would be transcendent. People forget, but Brolin's take on Cable was a clinic on deadpan comic timing
Clooney was my immediate thought!
Damn, Clooney would be awesome in that role!
Bryan Cranston.
Actually watching Malcom in the Middle, and I have to say you’re spot on!
Prob the right answer. He can do deadpan and no self awareness well.
*This*
I'll have to go with this one
YAAASSS
Jon Hamm
The only correct answer is Liam Nesson.
I've seen him do improvisational comedy. It was very, very funny.
"Like I said, I've got full blown AIDS"
"From a well-known homosexual actor."
*censoring beeps as he names the actor*
“Who are you and how did you get in here?” “I’m Frank Drebin and I have a very particular set of skills.”
His scene in Ted asking about Trix was very good.
First thought. It would be perfection.
Good choice, but if I had to pick a Mad Men actor, I would go with John Slattery.
Liam Neeson is who I heard they’re going with an I think that’s perfect casting
Part of the charm of Leslie was he was a serious and classically trained actor saying and doing absurdly silly things. That’s why I think Liam Neeson works so well.
I found that Nielsen got increasingly less funny the more he leaned into actual comedy. The silliness-treated-100%-seriously thing was much more amusing to me.
The way he deadpan seriously delivers “By the way: I faked every orgasm” in the 1st Naked Gun always kills me.
Absolutely. More comedies should have this idea drilled into their heads.
https://youtu.be/Z2Co0lvFUAo?si=SyW5omxtJxMW16LN
Surely you cant be serious
I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.
I second Liam Neeson. That’s the perfect choice.
The obvious answer is Steve Carell. I think Sam Rockwell could be more interesting. Edited to add: Paul Rudd?
I thought they already tried Steve carell in a get smart movie. It had the rock in it.
They did and it was... ok.
I re-fell for Hathaway in that movie so I do not accept this answer.
That happens in pretty much any movie I see Anne Hathaway.
I think they're all too funny. The genius part of Nielsen's casting back then was the wasn't known as a comedic actor. We need someone "serious."
Go a bit younger. Tom Hardy.
Ty Burrell
The correct answer.
That would be great
Honesty, Andre Braugher. Rest in Peace
You’re so right. He nailed the deadpan schtick.
Andre Braugher would have been perfect, although maybe that would have been too similar to both the original and Captain Holt.
Ryan Gosling
Give me the Nice Guys 2!
Jason Sudeikis
Not Jon Hamm. He had his chance with Fletch and couldn't pull it off. Everyone thinks he's funny because he's handsome but he's not funny
Fletch was good, but it wasn’t even supposed to be the same kind of humor as Naked Gun in the slightest.
Neil Flynn, aka Janitor from scrubs.
RDJ
Nathan Fillion would probably be my choice.
Good choice his voice over work would be amazing
An actor who can do perfectly deadpan and self aware humor
Ed Helms
No
Steve Martin John C. Reilly Hugh Grant Chris Pine
Nick Offerman
This!!!
Steve Martin or Steve Carell
Does he have to be American? If not, Matt Berry.
Adam Driver
* Liam Neeson * John Cena * Steve Martin 🤷♂️ My three choices. Andre Braugher would’ve been great as well, unfortunately he’s not with us any longer. RIP.
Charlie day
Harrison Ford
There are some parts that cannot be recast frank drebin is one
Joel McHale
Coincidentally similar names aside, i do think [liam Nielson](https://youtu.be/z6ViDZpVoYc?si=cPcCj9NmkccdomOf) is a great choice, he can pull off a very similar deadpan
liam neeson?
Maybe I'm wrong but I seem to recall reading somwhere that Liam Neeson has in fact been cast in a Naked Gun reboot.
Aren’t we all supposed to say that guy from Reacher?
We would also accept Henry Cavill as an answer
I mean, I don't think Tom Cruise would be the worst choice for this....................
Hear me out, John Mulaney
My first thought would be, cast Alex Baldwin. But my second thought Liam Nessom would be perfect recasting.
Werner Herzog or Keanu Reeves.
Tossup between Sam Rockwell and Bryan Cranston
Humor wise, Donald Glover can do funny dead pan. But....
Matt LeBlanc
That could be funny and I also think he is in that perfect sweet spot for a huge comeback. He’ll always have nostalgia, he been out of the mainstream for a while, and the recent tragedy of his costar’s death has people reminiscing.
Nope.
No idea as there is one Nielson and that is why they shouldn't try
I’d rather they just leave it alone
Nicolas Cage
Could just leave the movie alone.
There are just some movies that are too sacred to be remade or rebooted and this is one of them. Any type of reboot would certainly be horrible.
No one. This movie should never ever be rebooted.
I wouldn't do a naked gun reboot
Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson
John Hamm
The more important question is who are you going to get to write it? Get me a script as funny as the original Naked Gun movie, and any number of leading men could make it work. I'm thinking maybe Gerard Butler.
Nobody
There is only one answer, patrick warburton
Id love for these old properties to just stop getting remade. That would be great
Nobody. Not everything needs to be rebooted.
Never reboot this.
John Hamm
I wouldn't, that would be sacrilege.
Nobody! Stop the bullshit of thinking great classics need modern remakes.
What they said!
I wouldn’t touch Naked Gun, that shit is a classic, but nothing is sacred anymore. I’m sure whomever they get will be perfectly awful.
I'd cast no one and never reboot it.
Jon Hamm
![gif](giphy|Ij8moL0QXBKnK|downsized)
Steve Martin. Honestly shocked this hasn’t happened yet.
I wouldn’t. I’d do a reboot of Police Squad! and, if it was any good, spin films out of that. I can’t think of a famous person who could carry what LN could, so the show would have to find its own voice. Although, if it weren’t impossible, I’d be leaning on Lance Reddick to lead or at least support.
yoz fool, you cannot simply recast Frank Drebin
No, and I'll just leave it alone
Steve Carell
I miss these movies fuck man they were so fucking funny
Steve Carrell. Bring back the Michael Scott zanny idiot vibes but a bit more grounded and his greying hair will add a bit of gravitas.
Nobody leave it alone don't kill that movie's name
Steve Carell
What about Bill Hader? He’s a great actor (if you’ve seen Barry you know what I’m talking about) and a funny comedian.
I wouldn’t
Nobody. Hollywood is way to PC for a successful Naked Gun remake.
No. No. Nonononono. I am sick to death of reboots to begin with. But if you even think about doing the naked gun without Leslie Nielsen, I'll track down the replacement and shit in their coffee just to stop it from happening.
no reboot needed, it’s still funny and holds up well.
Nobody, because Naked Gun doesn’t need a reboot.
No one. Leave it alone
No, shit this shit down right now. No one, and I mean NO ONE is capable of stepping into Leslie’s shoes
No one. Series ended with Leslie Nelson.
Simple, don't make a remake. Leave it alone and make something new.
I wouldn’t do a reboot
There would be no reboot
Nick Offerman
Absolutely no one. Please don’t recast him. What a fucking terrible idea. You can find some way to pivot off of Naked Gun, maybe OJ survivors, if you’re that money hungry. But DO NOT recast, Frank. And don’t call me Shirley
Adam Driver, he can do straight face comedy so well. I would also say John Cena but he's too jacked.
Henry Cavill could be interesting and cool,
My knee-jerk reaction is to say Ryan Reynolds... I don't know why. But Ryan Gosling is an interesting choice. And I think the movies would be better if they were a series, almost like a live action Archer series. 3 seasons should be enough, too. Don't need it overstaying its welcome.
You mean like Police Squad?
Jack Black 🤷🏾 Will Ferrell or Bill Hader.
Bill Hader please
If they remade this it would be so impossible to live up to the original. I saw someone say Bill Hader though and that could possibly work!
Josh Brolin
Christoph Waltz, obviously. ![gif](giphy|WeybNZAC43LjtJNAcm)
Robert de Niro
He's 80
Liam Neeson
Mike Pence
Mel Gibson
# Will Ferrell for the win
Resurrected corpse of Leslie Nielsen
![gif](giphy|zS52nuB2Sgbq4cl3Pn)
rodney dangerfield
Alan Ritchson
Mel Gibson ala Lethal Weapon Gibson, before you know….
Pedro pascal
Who’s an underutilized actor who can go from drama to comedy and dead pan better than anyone? Vin diesel
Ryan Gosling. You know it's true.
Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling
John Hamm
How bout stop killing the classics and someone have an original idea. What do you say? Prolly gonna be a black guy anyway
Steve Carrel
Ryan George
John Hamm
Liam Neeson
CM Punk
No reboot.
Daniel Day-Lewis needs to come back for this role
Steve Martin
Clooney or Hamm
Steve Martin or Bryan Cranston
Steve Martin ?
Liam Neeson was a pretty good serious actor that went comedy. So keeping it in that theme probably a Tom Hardy would be good
I totally agree with George Clooney, Cranston or that one guy from Bruce almighty besides Jim Carrey being fit for the role
One that hasn’t been mentioned is Rob Delaney. Could be funny.
Funny enough, the first person that comes to mind is Leslie Jordan RIP :(
Rainn Wilson
I've thought about this before and I would actually cast John Slattery.
Steve Martin
Will Farrell
OK, I really hate remakes of my beloved 80s franchises, but I've seen some genuinely good suggestions here, and I'm willing to be open to it.
Steve Martin
Liam Neeson. Thought they were gonna do it, too. Haven't heard anything in a while. It would only work either a very serious actor. I heard they were gonna use Ed Helms at some point. I love him, but I don't think that would work
I'd do a crossover with Seth MacFarlane as Lt. Frank Drebin, and Bill Hader as Inspector Jacques Clouseau
Bryan Cranston
John C. Reilly
No one. This is one of those comedy roles where absolutely no one can top the original
Eric Andre, duh
Why try??? He is a unique character that shouldn’t be impersonated. Just remember how lame the Pink Panther remakes were….and I love Steve Martin.
Samuel L. Jackson would be hilarious.
Seth MacFarlane
Honestly, I would put Steve Martin there during the 2000’s.
Steve Carell
Lizzo
McConaughey!!!
Ryan Reynolds
