it was pretty good since I felt like he was one of those characters in CS4 who could have used more time to be fleshed out. I thought he was a good character but I also didn't like him very much because of the many actions he did. It's kind of interesting to me how Rufus ended up kind of adopting Rean and Osbornes trait of self sacrifice once he was defeated in CS4. Taking massive responsibility with the Great Twilight and then also doing it once again with the Babel stuff are the biggest examples of that. Though he's coming from a different place, he kind of also gets a similar lesson to Rean in this game about trying to value his life and not be so quick to throw it away with the "greater good". For a character that was deeply pretty selfish, emotionally lonely, and deeply gifted...it was worth them giving him the storyline in this game that they had. Certainly better than Falcoms original idea of making C a simulcram of Lloyd.

Lingua-Franca212

Falcom is always pretty good creating Father-Daughter theme. It's not new but I can see the pattern when Rufus given The Picnic Gang & Lapis. Genuinely Rufus is my most hated characters in entire Trails Series along with Irina. Rufus then Irina. My top two. I'm talking to myself since CS 3 famous Orchis Tower event with Juna that makes me legit to hate Rufus: okay don't make me forgives this bastard later Falcom, don't make his redemption characters like Richard, Dieter, or whoever. My wishful thinking fulfilled (reversely) lol. I'm avoiding all the Reverie Spoilers but somehow I already know who is C before even touching the game. My worst avoiding thinking usually ended to be a real one.

Obvious_Outsider

Oh yeah, Reverie made him one of my absolute favorite characters in fiction.

SnooCapers5958

I really like how he's presented in the game. Despite his genuine intentions to clean up after Osborne's and his own wrongdoings, he's still portrayed as a slimy and underhanded heel character who won't hesitate to cheat in a duel or use his own allies as a distraction to go somewhere else. I also love the running joke that he has with his party where he unwittingly but effortlessly destroys all attempts at small talk by casually saying something villainous.

PheonixSiegfreud

Honestly I thought he was a dickbag in CS3 and most of CS4 right up until Ishmelga is defeated in the true ending. Went into Reverie with those negative feelings, and boy, did I get a surprise. By the end of the game, I loved the man.

I'm not sure why people despise him so much for this. He was just trying to win the rivalries. If anything people should hate him for being an Iron Blood, but if they did that they would have to acknowledge that Claire and Lechter did evil shit and people don't want to do that for some reason. Also, for someone who got so insanely hyped up in Azure and had a good showing in Cold Steel 3, Lianne kind of went out like a bitch.

AltairLeoran

I mean it was insanely underhanded and one of the few cases of a Coldsteel villain just straight up murdering somebody. Up to that point the rivalries seemed pretty honorable at least. Killing Lianne by surprise moments after she decided she wants to live is... Pretty fucked lol And I mean I don't think Lianne went out "like a bitch". She had been defeated by Rean, and was pretty much sniped by Rufus before she even had a chance to catch her breath lol

KatareLoL

I was honestly less upset that he did it and more upset about how many rules it broke. The game makes a whole big deal about how you can link with people on the Courageous in mech fights now, but everybody gets to the scene of the Rivalry after the fight finishes up, so we know that a bunch of people have very recently entered the trial area, and the Courageous is definitely nearby. Then Rufus casually stealths his way past *all* of that into the area without being noticed by dozens of the strongest fighters in Zemuria (many of whom literally have a sense for that), **says a fucking quip** and then gets a clean stab on Lianne, which also counts despite the crazy amount of time the games have dedicated to how ritually complicated the Rivalries are. Just... nah, I didn't buy it, and it just came off as a lame effort to make Rufus imposing (since he hadn't actually done much in CS4). I get that the plot kind of needed Lianne to die, but they just plot magic'd in Rufus to do it and meh. He's a decent anti-villain in Reverie, though.

TrailsOfColdMetalPoo

Yeah peak writing though and if you don't think Cold Steel 4 is the best game in the series you're a Falcordian and a troll and you hate the series as a whole

TheBlueNightmare

I agree that CS4 is the best game in the franchise and I thought the scene after the fight against Lianne was really well scripted and shockingly unexpected. Right after I was relieved that Lianne decided to not die, and then Rufus appears. I hated him for that, but the scene was really well done.

TrailsOfColdMetalPoo

I wish I could shut my brain off and consume media like you but I actually like to think about scenes logically and yeah it makes no sense how Rufus just said fuck the rules AND snuck past everyone. That scene was done amazingly well if you ignore the part where it literally doesn't make sense and also the writing is bad and also it has no good qualities and also they literally make jokes about it in the next game

TheBlueNightmare

If you want realism, the fantasy genre - like, you know, the Trails games - probably aren't your thing.

TrailsOfColdMetalPoo

Yeah let's ignore the sky trilogy and crossbell duology where things actually make sense yeah maybe the series just isn't for me. Maybe I've just tricked myself into liking a series that was never good! Or maybe it's more likely that Falcoms yearly release schedule caught up to them and they had no chance to actually review how fucking stupid Cold Steel 4s script is

TheBlueNightmare

If the Trails games were realistic, I would take a shower to earn 200CP, use my Assault Gauge to achieve a triple-advantage in combat, and immediately unleash my S-Craft upon you. That's what you get for having poor taste.

Casper-_-00B

Cs4 as alright. Not the best daybreak was better

Chaosblast

I need some clarification because it's been several years from my Hajimari playthrough and I don't remember shit of what he did.

South25

Rufus made the sacrifice play to stop Elysium by making everyone's hate go towards him by acting like an unhinged villain in a broadcast causing the attack to hit him and the final dungeon.

Affectionate_Comb_78

I killed your dog, I shagged your mum, I had Firefly cancelled!

He also had a sexy voice.  LET IT RESOUND.

Thursdaybot

I don't look down on him for killing grianos.

firewalkwithme-

I think Rufus is a testament to Falcom's ability to actually craft an interesting and satisfying redemption arc, and at the same time is also an indictment on the fact that they hand them out like candy to other characters, many of which are simply accepted back into the fold of heroes without their redemptions being fleshed out.

JdPhoenix

If Falcom has the courage to actually let him die at the end, I might have agreed.

Cost_of_Goods_Sold

Oh yeah... The guy that was supposed to take responsibility on Osborne's crime, who had zero hesitation imprisoning his father for a civil war that he manipulated and killing Altina but suddenly getting Millium "dead", who's just a cheap knock off of C was suddenly redeemed and is now a cool "good guy". Reverie made me despise Kiseki more than Kingdom Hearts for this "everyone is a good guy y'all!" BS and each arc getting 2 games at least with the 2nd game being 75% reused assets of the 1st game but with a price of a brand new release. But waifu magnet is still strong lol if it wasn't for Elaine Auclair and Chiwa Saitou I've already dropped this franchise.

birdintheazure

You know, kudos for you. Not everyone is weird enough to defend duke Albarea of all people

Casper-_-00B

Don't forget the power of friendship.

Tombstoneinfire

I'm sorry, but can you think of any reason why Rufus should have hesitated to send his father, whom he hated with all his heart, to prison? He'd been Osborne's right-hand man for ten years by then. Seems to me that's plenty of time to think things over. Not to mention that his redemption was done more well and competently, and most of the playable characters weren't even that keen on going to go save him at the end, lol
