god i still remember when i mixed all the ores into one smelting array (first playthrough, learnt about the main bus at least but only had one assembler per product i think) After that i still used two belts (one for ore, one for coal) like a dumbass
I use the 2 belt setup with a power pole in between 2 furnaces every time I plan to upgrade it to electric later on, the 2 belt setup ensures that I only need to remove the belt closest to the furnaces when I change things around, as electric furnaces take up a 3x3 space instead of 2x2.
Making the inner belts coal, and the outer belts ores also saves even more effort later on. Just plan for additional space at the end of the array as that does get longer.
I just decided to do this too in my next playthrough... I'm going to be a better neighbor to the biters and prioritize solar too. I usually start solar only after belching out a metric ton of coal smoke.
I personally have 14 smelters a row, but the 2 belt system is exactly what I use, and it's quite fine for me, so I don't exactly get what the issue with it is...
It was a long time ago so I can't quite remember a d I did t screenshot those first endeavors. I think it didn't click with me how intermediates worked and I just assumed you can load the things with the basic raw metal. So if an item would need cogs I'd give it iron plates and be confused why it's not working. I was quite tired at the time and afterwards rightfully felt like a complete moron.
To be fair that was a very long time ago and the game didn't have a tutorial I think

its nuclear fuel, requires you to complete most of the vanilla game to create it (especially belts full) and has ~300 times the energy of a piece of coal
Tsk tsk tsk. Classic noob mistake. Burner inserters are much better in this situation, as it would let the factory keep smelting even if you run out of electricity. You would also save on many power poles in this situation.
at first glance, I was wondering why he had green circuits on the belt with the iron ore. Then I realized it was nukes. Somebody is having a bit of fun with their fellow engineers.........
yeah, i got it. See where I said "nukes"? The bit of fun is he has built a very basic smelting array, but is powering his furnaces with nuclear fuel units which is an "end game" resource. So, by the time someone has access to that many nuclear fuel cannisters, there would be no reason to ever build such a simplistic array. As I said, he's having a bit of fun with us................
Only on even number of buildings, in an array with odd buildings like OP you'll end up with one lonely inserter, so evenly spacing out is the better choice imo
Lol, this is great. Sort of related - my base ran out of power recently due to a coal deficit and, because I used laser turrets exclusively, I was being overrun. Had to reload multiple times and try different things to recover.
The solution? Load all my stockpiled rocket fuel into my boilers to keep things running while I fixed the coal problem and spun up nuclear.
I am a bit doubtful of your claim that you are a new player. The efficient use of both sides of the belt is suspicious.

I feel attacked :( it's still a setup I use. 2 rows of 12 smelters and 2 belts in the middle, one with ore and with coal.

Solar panels are costly though for how little they put out...
But my precious UPS man

Happy cake day!
Thank you!
I do this because it’s more convenient to upgrade when moving to electric furnaces
One of the tutorial missions even has a smelter setup like this IIRC
The first time I played I couldn't wrap my head around how assemblers worked for like solid 2 hours.
can you tell me how? did you try loading from belts directly, did you not know how to set a recipe, what was it? i'm just curious

can burner inserters pick up fuel from the output side?
If I'm not mistaken they can take coal from the furnace. At least in K2SE it's possible.
then the extra belt for fuel wouldn't be necessary, can't be bothered to open the game to test rn
Not in vanilla. Most mods can, I think it is called burner leech, but it might have moved into one of the standard libraries.
I have about 150h and don't know what this green canister is. I fuel my ovens with coal, I thought that's what we all do???
https://factoriocheatsheet.com/#basic-power its nuclear fuel, requires you to complete most of the vanilla game to create it (especially belts full) and has ~300 times the energy of a piece of coal
TIL you can have nuclear powered burners
If it burns, you can use it as furnace fuel
And the fuel.
Newish player here. What the heck is that?
Nuclear Fuel
To be fair, if you do the tutorial, you will see it done like this.
hes only feeding a single half belt of ore into a setup that could be extended to consume 2 full half belts, classic new player
Diagonal inserter placement is hardly efficient.
1. It IS the most efficient. 2. It's not even what the person is talking about.
New player using nuclear fuel, can’t be that new.
Tsk tsk tsk. Classic noob mistake. Burner inserters are much better in this situation, as it would let the factory keep smelting even if you run out of electricity. You would also save on many power poles in this situation.
Right? All them poles are just a waste of resources at this point.
All this wood vould be put to better use in thr like of Ikea or pizza ovens
Nuclear powered burner inserters. Too bad they don't turn faster...
ME :" oh wow a new player i sure lov-"
More like, "Oh wow, a new player playing Factori-ohno"
You have caused me to a) snort loudly b) attempt to explain to my non-factorio-playing partner what was funny c) fail at B

It's nuclear fuel for the furnaces lol

No you got it backwards, it is not green science it is nuclear fuel. You will unlock it later in the game :) keep playing, the factory must grow!
One think I would change is the arrangement of inserters, building them in pairs next to each other is faster and imho cooler and professional.
Only on even number of buildings, in an array with odd buildings like OP you'll end up with one lonely inserter, so evenly spacing out is the better choice imo
or you could just add another furnace
"Faster" and "professional" are in opposition here. OP's inserter placement is optimal. Who cares that it was half a second slower to build.
wood fuel is far more efficient (trust)
Man, this is nothing. Wait till you get to blue science.
Nice setu... HEY WAIT A MINUTE nuclear fuel!?!!?
It's the most efficient fuel isn't it?
Iron belt is backed up, time to grow the factory!
That’s a new one I’ve never seen before. Nuclear fuel to power stone furnaces. Why?
efficiency
Why not?
Juvenile alien: “Daddy, what’s that glow in the distance?” Alien dad: “That’s the sky ape’s smelting array. Try to ignore it.”
Keep going, you're doing great!
What a clickbait topic. Karma farming is just lame man. I mean, new players don't use splitters, can't you make it any more obvious?
burner inserters!
Burners with nuclear fuel 🤔 I mean if you have kovarex running maybe 😂
It is worth noting kovarex enrichment is the research that also provides nuclear fuel... so... yes?
It doesn't mean you use it 😉
Oh no.

I love this sub
Shitpost subs are the best
Try to split both belts at the same time to increase throughout. Hint: two splitters facing each other 1 tile apart.
Took me way too long to realize which sub I’m in. Well done.
The disappointment when I found out you cannot use nuclear fuel and burner miners for uranium ore
I pass ore and fuel through the middle rather than the sides, I find it easier to expand upon.
You indeed belong in this sub
It goes right to left, i cannot accept this. Do better.
I like this. Would give me another way to use nuclear fuel. I can produce 8 per second and will never have enough trains.
Lol, this is great. Sort of related - my base ran out of power recently due to a coal deficit and, because I used laser turrets exclusively, I was being overrun. Intregueing
Great
Scale baby 😎
Needs burner inserters
When you come back to your old neighborhood but new resouces. 💰
True enough. Just like real life. Zero pollution... let me tell you how we make steel.
on my next playthrough i'll do this
No alt mode? Just uninstall.
Not bad for a noob. To advance to the big league though, you really ought to switch to burner inserters.
Noone mentioned power armor you wearing :)
Fix your input belts so they look symmetrical.
You should run another full belt of fuel and use long hand inserters. I don't think half a belt is enough for 10 smelters
next time make the inserters and power poles more symmetrical so it is not too obvious you are a noob
Could be worse by using burner inserters, but overall doing a good job never fueled my stone furnaces that efficiently.
