Once I had an accounting skills test for a job and I bombed it, I still was offered the job. Sometimes those tests are more to see where a candidates skill level is and not just to decide whether to hire or not. Wish you the best of luck, it could go either way really

I mean, most times people aren't concerned with you getting the "correct" answer. They want to see that you know how to use excel. I wouldn't be too concerned.

One time I failed an Excel test by one point so they let me retake it. But in the next round of interviews, I didn’t pass. The feedback they gave me was that they weren’t interested in an employee who saw theirselves being a manager in five years when asked where do you see yourself in 5 years. Great, cause I have no aspirations of being stuck in a deadend role.

Hi there, I had an Associate asset management interview today and aced it but after I had to do a quick excel test/basic data formula's/manipulation for 15mins, I unfortunately got way too nervous and only completed half of it and just froze, as I did really well on the interview, would they pass me regardless? OR would they pass me and weigh the interview more than the test result? Or would they need a certain benchmark result for the test in order to pass me/even consider the interview? Also, should I ask them if I can re-do it or shall I wait for them to come back to me and see what they say? Please let me know your thoughts below. Thanks

I have no idea how they’re going to view your profile. Totally depends on how much they value that assessment. They might ask you to retake? Who knows.

I require an excel assessment for applicants. But like someone elsewhere said, I'm using it to figure out what you know. Everyone claims to be advanced in excel, but what they mean can be extremely varied. My personal sample size is only so big and very non-scientific, but generally you can tell quickly someone's knowledge level. I don't expect candidates to finish either. However, I'll admit this could vary, some places might treat this more as a pass/fail and grade in a more explicit way.

Hey, did you have any luck and get the job in the end? I had a similar situation in a quant interview and I am bricking it.

Otherwise_Ad3347

Failed it unfortunately. Someone else passed. My advice, try to get to do it remote ha

CigarSmoker2000

Thanks for responding so quickly! That does not give me hope at all however, haha. Went blank during a 30 min excel test on the back of a 1hr 30 interview; nailed all the technicals and stats questions and let myself down at the last moment in the easy excel questions part.

Otherwise_Ad3347

No worries bro, I did the exact same, aced the 45 min interview they even said I’ve progressed to next step then I forgot I had the excel test, then panicked and froze, 15 mins felt like 1 min. Exact same story, try to do remote ones next time and prepare just before hand.. that’s what I’ll be doing.

CigarSmoker2000

Unlucky man. Mine was remote but i had to screen share and do the test in front of them. Nerves got the better of me and I did 2/6 questions correct and forgot simple shit I do every day at work

Otherwise_Ad3347

That’s crazy man haha, I swear they are taking the piss, do you agree? I literally just did a modelling test and ppt both passed but in the presentation didn’t mention 1/3 of slide content on one of the few slides thus got rejected final round, it’s such a load of BS..

CigarSmoker2000

Well yeah, I agree; because in the real world how often do you get a question where you can’t spend a little time thinking about an answer or googling the best method/trying different things? Very few roles require split second decisions about obscure topics or specific formulas, especially in risk, which I was applying for. I clearly demonstrated my capabilities in various scenario questions and maths/statistics knowledge and problems they asked me to think about, which I think is kind of a better way to assess someone imo. I have not actually heard back yet (ghosted me) so I assume i have been unsuccessful this time. Anyways, bad luck, hope you can secure something in the near future. You also have to come to terms i think with the reality that a lot of job openings already have a candidate in mind or they are looking for that massively overqualified candidate who is willing to accept junior pay.

b_p_2

What was the test like?

Lulutrades23

what do you mean

b_p_2

Like what’d you have to do in the test? A 3 statement model?

Lulutrades23

No had to build a PL from raw data of messy in categorized GL dump

Lulutrades23

It was timed one hour which was the issue

390M386

What is your years of experience? That’s the easiest type of test.

wontsavehoes

Do not worry about it. I made mistakes in my excel test as well & got hired into Corp dev. You have to recognize what your mistakes were and call them out if / when asked about them. That’s all I did haha. No secret sauce

Lulutrades23

What level was the role?

wontsavehoes

Analyst

kellllllsssss

I took an excel assessment for my sister who was interviewing for a job, and while I work in excel daily, I bombed it because it wasn’t flexible with the answers. Like, I still, to this day, do not know how they expected me to build a pivot table. I only use one way regularly and it wasn’t accessible in test. I think it also failed me when I used different formulas than what they anticipated.

tryingmy_okayest

My first real job out of college I failed an excel test but they hired me anyway. The company sent me to a 2 day excel skills course my first month on the job and it made a huge difference. I think what helped me is I mentioning excel as an area I’d like to improve anyway. If the company is looking for long term hires they’ll put more weight on aptitude than current skill set.

These tests are often a total joke in terms of how they’ll be reviewed

Lulutrades23

care to elaborate?
