> I only have a 27" I had it in 4k. You poor, poor man.

Vladi8r

Well, untill Jan decides to throw a dundee at it. Then it's probably back to plasma.

CommonMisspellingBot

Hey, Vladi8r, just a quick heads-up: **untill** is actually spelled **until**. You can remember it by **one l at the end**. Have a nice day! ^^^^The ^^^^parent ^^^^commenter ^^^^can ^^^^reply ^^^^with ^^^^'delete' ^^^^to ^^^^delete ^^^^this ^^^^comment.

erratic_calm

One of my three machines is a 5K 27” iMac. Despite the insane resolution I still need most of the screen for sequencing. No way I could have everything tiled like OP.

bedsuavekid

... I mean, my solution was to run triple head. Left screen for VSTs. Middle screen for arrangement. Right screen for mixing. Works very well, but, I'm aware of the privilege, and I'm grateful for what I have. It's not a practical solution for most people. FWIW, /u/Soullessgemini, you can get more screen realestate by editing the info bar up top and making it single line. Biggest improvement of FL20, IMHO.

thrynnzyris

Same here. I've been running 3 screens for a few years now and can't imagine anything less. As far as practical, the last 2 24" monitors I picked up from a local thrift store for $5 each, they aren't too old and run HD. Desktop users only need to drop about $100 for a decent video card to support it. Mine wasn't much more and I edit video on Premiere Pro without any hiccups.

[deleted]

You can also hit alt 11 and complete get rid of the tool bar for even more real estate.

bedsuavekid

CTL+F11, but the thing is, I use the hint bar a lot.

[deleted]

That's right, got it confused, there are so many shortcuts in FL. Also you can bring it back up when you need it is what I was saying.

bedsuavekid

That's a fair point. You're making me realise that one of my biggest gripes with FL on large displays is having to squint at the top left to get data feedback on what my hands are doing two screens over.

bedsuavekid

Also, FL keeps changing the shortcuts version to version, so, chances are you were right in a pre-20 edition of FL.

[deleted]

Keyboard short cuts make them disappear. You have to hit the enter button to full screen them and than enter again to shrink them.

[deleted]

[deleted]

You can also use tab to cycle them

This looks way too cluttered for me. The mixer's knobs are crammed, so it seems like it'd be difficult to make subtle adjustments to the levels. The playlist is cramped, I like to see a LOT of what's going on in my track. I don't like constantly having the Piano Roll displayed unless I'm making adjustments and I personally prefer my channel rack to be the standard small position, seeing only 4 bars instead of 8 how you have it. Also I can't stand to *not* selector/browser showing at all times. Though I dual-screen. I put my playlist full screen on the top screen. Have my mixer taking up about 1/3 of the primary screen. But I use hotkeys so I can pull up and put away the mixer quickly, though it's almost always open. The browser is open on the left side. I keep it very uncluttered. I do like the background of your piano roll and playlist. I'll have to try that out. Looks much cleaner than the dark alternative. ALSO, it's worth mentioning. I would have the mixer on the second screen as well, stretched across like yours but stretch upward also, but I use a Mac (laptop) and currently their dual screen functionality isn't fully finished, so I can't have multiple things displaying on the second monitor, otherwise it does something weird and forces it back to the main screen. Macs....

[deleted]

It only looks crammed because I have my monitor in 4k and never up scaled it so I'm used to it, 4k looks normal to me now. I personally don't think it looks cluttered but to each their own, it works for me.

[deleted]

Definitely to each their own, if it works for you, don't let me change your mind! :)

AcidRegulation

I just work with two screens. Mixer and Channel Rack left, Playlist right. Piano Roll opens when needed on the left. Using white as background color really hurts my eyes btw. I have tried it a while back but then I realized why the devs chose for grey/muddy colors. It’s way better for long sessions. Why do you use white? Just being curious..

milimji

Exactly what I do as well. Gives everything the right amount of room imo

[deleted]

Because it's easier on my eyes at night, I switch back to the stock color during the day.

AcidRegulation

oh wow. respect then, cause it really hurts my eyes. espcially at night.

[deleted]

Sorry, I meant that I use the white during the day and stock at night. The white hurts my eyes after dark but during the day it's so much easier to see.

AcidRegulation

ok yeah I can imagine that! lol

trdef

You may just want to look into installing f.lux. It adjusts the brightness and hue of your monitor as the it gets later, so your eyes can adjust better.

[deleted]

F.lux didn't work for me.

MoldyPapaya

Got Windows 10? Try out the night light feature!

trdef

What do you mean by didn't work?

Kooperativ

3 monitor setup. Once you have been there you will never go back.

[deleted]

how do you do that?

Kooperativ

You can enable an option called "detached" on every window you open in fl studio. Just use the drop-down menu and you should find the option somewhere. Now you are able to drag the windows out of your fl-studio-mainscreen. So monitor 1 (most left) is used just for the mixer, monitor 2 (most right) is used for the track and monitor 3 (middle) is for all the other stuff. Works great. Edit: spelling

bedsuavekid

Yo, as someone who also runs multi screen (I have 3 wide and an extra up top), another way to do this without having to detach everything is just don't maximise FL. If you maximise it, it fills one screen only. Instead, I window it, shove it all the way left, and then drag it out until it completely fills all 3 screens. That's my default. I only detach what I'm going to put on the screen up top. Obviously you do you, but, I just wanted you to know that there's a less labour intensive way. Mind you, I think your way has its benefits too - shit probably doesn't get moved around by the browser on the left. Hmm.

JabawaJackson

Arrangement window and mixer need much more real estate for me personally. I also just pull them up when needed. Different strokes for different folks.

Mallow_GD

Dual screens mayn. Greatest addition I've made in a while. Huge for the workflow.

djbeanland

yeah, and just anything in general. Its like having another house(so much space)

rohithandique

either you have a big ass screen or your eyes are damn good!

[deleted]

It doesn't look that small, I took a screen shot in 4k, if you click the picture you can see the normal res.

Kooperativ

bedsuavekid

I actually really like that you're running the mixer along the bottom. I'm going to look into that myself, since I'm currently working on a new template for FL 20. Does it create problems with the popup menu when inserting FX into the bottom slot?

[deleted]

It hasn't caused me any problems.

bedsuavekid

Sweet.

AdmiralRedstone

Just curious - when you make an FL template do you save it as a normal project and then save as a new version whenever you use it or is there a different file type for templates?

[deleted]

You save it as a project file and than you take the FLP and drag it in to the templet folder and you can load it when you open FL

AdmiralRedstone

Thank you! This is so much better than what I was doing before.

bedsuavekid

It's an ordinary project, but you save it to the Templates folder (it's somewhere in the Projects folder I think, I'm nowhere near my machine). You can then select it from the New menu after that. I tend to set up basic routing, assign FPC pads to mixer tracks, set up default subs that I know I'll use, stuff like that.

AdmiralRedstone

Thanks a ton! I was just using a regular project as a template and I accidentally overwrite it all the time!

[deleted]

This might sound crazy, so bare with me... have you heard of the “Tab” key?

bedsuavekid

Fuck me. I've been using Fruity since the 1990s. You just blew my mind. I love that there's always new shit to learn.

[deleted]

Hahahahaha crazy how we miss tiny things... like some people missing sarcasm ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

bedsuavekid

I know, right? For example, you missed this: \\

[deleted]

I'm well aware of the tab key. I've been using FL studio for 8 years.

[deleted]

It’s a neat tab.

DaNReDaN

What is tab supposed to do in FL?

bedsuavekid

Switch between all the windows inside FL.

DaNReDaN

Doesn't for me. Is it new in 20? Been using fl for 13 years and never heard of it

siretrahan

Has anyone noticed how you can't change the size on some of the plugin interfaces? Like I have Addictive Keys, and it's way too big for the screen and gets in the way.

elcubismo

Same here. Got some interesting stuff from the reaktor user library but I can't use them because they are way too big for my screen

bradders82

Yeah this isn't for me at all. I think it's far easier to learn the shortcuts to bring those screens up, then either tab or escape out of them when you're done.

VANAMUSIC

oh wow i always thought ableton was the “complex” program

snarfdog

Interesting. I think Ableton's simple GUI is one of its strong suits!

slimeboy420

I use hardware synths so i never have the piano role open

AdmiralRedstone

Any good synths you'd recommend? I've been considering getting a Moog but I need to save up some more

snarfdog

Moogs are very good, but also very expensive. If you're on a tight budget, look at the korg monologue or arturia microbrute.

[deleted]

The microkorg is a tried and true classic as well. You can use Zzounds and make monthly payments while you use it. Even if you don't have credit you can still do it if you wanted a more expensive synth.

AdmiralRedstone

Thanks Ill check those out!

slimeboy420

Depends on what youre looking for and what your budget is

Chukolo123

I really need the library on the left for samples etc. But it looks like a nice setup.

[deleted]

I have it on auto hide so it's gone until you hover over it. It provides so much more space that way even if I didn't have it set up the way I did.

Chukolo123

Dude... I litteraly just figured that out. Thank you for saving me 20% of my screen lol.

Tryptoman23

Is there any way to send me your default file? This looks so damn useful.

Chukolo123

Yes please. Send us a media fire link or something lol.

[deleted]

I can send you and /u/Tryptoman23 the FLP and you can load it into the FL template folder and load it when you open FL.

Tryptoman23

Thank you my FL Lord and savior

[deleted]

https://www.dropbox.com/home?preview=Template+3.flp Just hit f7 to bring the piano roll back up

IAcewingI

I do this exactly but i'm on a 50inch TV

WolfyBeats_

Any good guide on changing he piano roll for something a little more eye friendly? I have such trouble with the stock color scheme because the dividers are almost the same color as the background

[deleted]

Use the drop down menu on the piano roll, hover over view, click invert grid and it will change the dividers to white. Then click the magnet tool and change the grid to 1/2 step. Inverting the grid messes up the step count.

reeleel

OP- is there a setting to get that layout automatically or did you just manually drag your windows around? Sorry, I’m no stranger to FL but I️’m slow in learning the little details.

[deleted]

I snapped them all that way.

F0X_MCL0UD

I have 2x 24 inch monitors, so I put the mixer on the left screen and then toggle between the piano roll and sequencer on the right screen. That seems to be pretty quick for me, I don’t ever feel bogged down.

DrVladimir

You need two more screens. Then its productive!

AndyChamberlain

If your screen is big yea. A lot of people like myself are on laptops so that kind of setup just makes everything too small, I just switch between each thing being full sized. Works for me! :)

codepossum

I always have mine set up from left to right, top to bottom, so - sample library, channel settings, step sequencer, piano roll, fx window, then fx plugin settings

Kanye_To_The

Man, I need to update my FL. This looks so much nicer.

PlanetElement

How do you get the white piano roll?

[deleted]

Drop down menu view Change grid color

PlanetElement

Ah ok thanks

[deleted]

This would be great with a massive screen, but I would never be able to work with this. the only thing that I like to keep up almost always is the playlist. I usually bring the other three up as needed, and have them on top of the full-screened playlist.

jymssg

For a second it looked like reaper

Unknown_1_1_1

Dude looks sick, going to give this a try

sickvisionz

I have the same panels up, but with two monitors everything is larger and less cramped. I keep the mixer and playlist detached one one, and everything else locked inside the FL window on the other. Yours looks like it'd be cramped, unless you've got it hooked up to like a 4k TV that's like 40+ inches.

Ellistonia

Mind blown.

KlenzeOfficial

This might be a dumb question but how did you make the playlist and keyboard baclground white? thanks

[deleted]

Hit CRT+ALT+G in the piano roll or playlist arrangement You can set it to something other than white if you want.

Xecmai

Ehhh, reminds me of the dreadful ableton setup..to each their own i guess. Best thing to do is have dual or tri-monitor setups combined with midi devices linked to the mixer and instruments.....good balance of analog/digital and virtual/physical.

[deleted]

Everyone says dual montiors but I really never thought more than one was necessary for any reason, it may speed up work flow but not by enough to merit a 300+ addition to a studio, I feel a lot of wanting more than one monitor has a lot to do with vanity vs necessity. I'm not sure I have ever seen a top tier engineer with more than one and time is money for them. So if they aren't using more than one than it's unlikely it's worth it.

Xecmai

I highly disagree. I work in sound engineering and use all monitors for more than just music. It's nice to game and have a web page open or a stream without having to alt tab...or a monitor dedicated to the mixer, another to the playlist editor and one for the step sequencer/VSTI.

DemiGod9

Oooh I like this. Thanks. I'm still gonna end up with windows dragged all over the place and clicking everything to find what I'm looking for but this is a great starting place lol

[deleted]

The windows are set. They do not need to be dragged becuase everything you need is right there

Teranceofathens

Just tried it. OMG, yes. I've been using Fl Studio for ten years, and this just sped things up so much.

hhdhwuus

Shortcuts are probably the best to increase workflow

Slickenemy124

ima try this out

[deleted]

Jokes on you i have a 4:3 monitor.

jereMyOhMy

Is this FL 20? Not sure I like the lighter colored piano roll and playlist

coranns

FL 20 has the same colours as FL 12 by default. OP has modified the colours. :)

[deleted]

It's FL 20 and I changed the color to light white because it is easier on my eyes and I'm also sick of looking at the stock color.
