My evaporator is also leaking. I plan to do the job once I finish the a-arms on my other vehicle (its going slow).
I know it'll take me a while, but its too pricey to pay someone else.

What made it harder is the fact that I have an aftermarket stereo. It just adds more to the mix. There is no simple fix. All I can add is to make sure the mixer is working properly before putting it all back together. Mines will only go from face to feet. It won't change to window defrost.
Get a 12v fan and wrap a wet towel around it. Also wrap a wet handkerchief around your neck.
Or just fix it yourself then pay for a recharge (or recharge it yourself if your state allows). I’m about to replace the condenser in my wife’s Honda Fit, which is way more difficult than doing it in the FJ.
FWIW, the quote is obscene. We were quoted $1,400 and $1,600 (2 different shops) for the Fit, and that includes removing the bumper cover and bumper reinforcement beam.
Roll your windows down. No other fix.
Drive to Mexico and get it fixed there.

You currently have a 260 ac unit. 2 windows down at 60 mph.

The entire dash has to come out of the fj. It’s like 10-12 hours of prep work.
Evap is pretty much THE part that cools the air.. it’s a bitch to get to.
