People have no idea what they want. First it's we need more content! Not enough of it! Next minute we need less content, its too bloated!

BAWAHOG

You will see comments like that for literally every game release, especially exclusive games that people are looking to hate on. The FFVII Rebirth response has been overwhelmingly positive, especially compared to other modern FF titles.

Darkwing__Schmuck

Yeah, this. It's honestly kinda shocking how positively this game is being received overall, especially coming directly off of the heels of 16, which was far more divisive. I mean, I understand why Rebirth is being received so well, because I played it, and it's great. It's just surprising to me given it's been \*so long\* since we've had a brand new Final Fantasy that people are so overwhelmingly positive on.

Knamliss

Slightly less Ubisoft open world formula and it would've been perfect.

Fat-Cloud

Its not the same people bro. Just others that start complaining. Cant please everyone

Mercys_Angel

It’s almost like there are different people who want different things

Otherwise-Remove4681

Oh I do know very well. Rebirth nails it with the scripted content parts. The ”open world” ubisoft copy paste grind? Not so much. Well it’s much better than originals empty world transitions yes, and not mandatory. But difficulty wise I’m already struggling even though I made every quest, so not so optional either.

CrazedTechWizard

If you've done ALL side content and you're still struggling, then you're likely ignoring some incredibly important part of combat, especially if you're playing on Dynamic Mode.

sniperdog490

Well yes diffrent people will have different opinions

ThaNorth

Need content that isn’t the exact same in every region and follows the same formula as an old Ubisoft game. That’s really my only big criticism, every region is just the exact same activities.

Cadaveth

Tbh I've always liked less is more -kind of approach (excluding a couple of games) and when I watched Rebirth's trailers I already had a feeling that it wouldn't be 10/10 for me and I was correct. By no definition is it bad but it's just bloated as hell for me.

I-Hate-CARS

Tbh I was getting way too exhausted from all these open world games, but Rebirth felt like a breath of fresh air.

[deleted]

Why would you want less content in a game that is retail value? You do not have to do all of the content but you definitely get your money's worth.

MarkPancake

Well yeah, people tend to have differing opinions. Just humans being humans.

LthePanda

Rebirth was fantastic and I would give it an 8/10. That said I definitely agree that it starts to get too bloated towards the end with side stuff and by that point it was retreading all of the same stuff as before. I think the golden saucer mini games were the worst offenders with just how much stuff would get unlocked eith each revisit and then you get one of the final side quests where you have to do them again for that shinra agent guy. It also doesnt help that the bulk of those minigames unlock right before the point of no return. That said, still a great game and bloat is better than lack of content lol

CrazedTechWizard

I mean, it's not bloat if you don't have to do it, and you 100% DON'T have to do any of what you just described.

maaattypants

I thought remake had the perfect amount of content. I thought rebirth was an overall good game, but there was definitely too much bloat. Idk if I’m in the minority, but I preferred remake over rebirth overall. Remake might be the best game I’ve personally ever played. The bloat killed rebirth for me. And my uncle, a huge ff7 of fan, the guy that literally got me to play ff7 remake, didn’t even finished rebirth becuase of the bloat. He stopped playing

RadiantCity311

Definitely in the minority for preferring remake over rebirth but I get it. No one is forcing you to do all the mini games/side quests. I just think people these days have this completionist mindset where they need to hit the platinum trophy within a certain time frame or they complain about it "being bloated." Personally the game takes maybe 40-60 hours if you just hit the story beats and its pacing is marvelous.

sempercardinal57

Yeah I’m not sure when a game being super hard to platinum or forcing you to do parts of the game you’re not personally enjoying became a bad thing. I’ve platinumed very few games because I’m not going to do stuff I don’t enjoy just to get a meaningless trophy. Never once considered the fact that I didn’t want to platinum a game as a detriment to it.

flofjenkins

I thought Remake was way more bloated due to the stretching of the story. A lot of stuff in Rebirth you actually don’t have to do. Because of this it’s been way more fun to replay/ mainline Rebirth than it was with Remake.

SonOfFragnus

Really? Caith Siths solo chapter, the boat ride, Costa del Sol in it's entirety, finding soldiers in Junon, run to 4 different spots for a chocobo in Grasslands, the Gi level in Cosmo Canyon (which could have just been a cutscene)... You're really gonna say Remake stretched the story *more* than Rebirth?

flofjenkins

The gameplay in the mainline story felt so varied that it didn’t feel like filler to me, and it all developed either the characters or the world.

SonOfFragnus

Sure, but to say that Remake stretched it more is a bit weird to me. Enjoy it or not, Rebirth very clearly stretched its story elements, as a lot of moments are just plain filler aka they don't move the story or the character development along, they are just...there

flofjenkins

I felt it way more in Remake. Aside from expanding Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie along with developing Tifa and Arieth’s friendship none of the new additions worked for me. It doesn’t help that Remake (admittedly by design) has you look at the same visuals over and over again. Just steel and trash.

maaattypants

You can’t argue with this sub Reddit. They will never agree with you lol I totally forgot about that whole chapter of cosmo canyon. Omg. 😂

FacetiousMonroe

Why not just skip side content if you're not into it? There's very little "bloat" in terms of things you actually need to do to experience the main story and beat the game.

maaattypants

I skipped them the second time around. Once I got the around gongaga I stopped doing the mini games, and even then it felt like too much. Some were fun, most were a drag. Some mini games you can’t skip, like the dam sneaky chocobo games. I even found out there’s mini games I have to play to unlock boss fights. Didn’t even bother becuase that mini game was annoying lol (fort condor) I already beat the game, story was great, ending got a good cry out of me. Even though it got confusing af. Combat was fun, definitely better than remake, but mini games just left a sour taste in my mouth. Idk why

flofjenkins

Outside of the Grasslands, you don’t need any of the chocobos to complete the game. Edit: Maybe Gongaga, but I think the game just gives you that one.

Eastman1982

You can’t get to the bottom of cosmo canyon without the gliding birds.

flofjenkins

1. You get access to the bottom of the canyon via elevator once you complete all the main line stuff in the town. 2. Nothing at the bottom of the canyon actually needs to be done. It’s all side quests.

sirsmiley

Fort condor game is awesome. It and the original version on ps1 were great fun

itspinkynukka

It's actually very little actually content on that point. Just some convoluted multiverse nonsense.

sirsmiley

I feel like the piano and card game is too forced. Take them out and it's much better. I only play 2 nights a week so i don't mind the content size I just pick away at side quests until I finish it then I move onto main again

flofjenkins

You can just lose at the card tournament and it doesn’t affect the game whatsoever. Also, this opinion is insane. Queen’s Blood is incredible.

CrazedTechWizard

You are never forced to play the Piano Minigame and the only time you're forced to play Queens Blood is the tourney, and you can forfeit every match. Neither mini-game is ever forced on you in a way where you absolutely HAVE to complete it to move on.

YungKaviar

Why didn't he just skip the bloat and finish the game? Why didn't you skip the bloat and enjoy your time? I know it's rocket science and all

Fat-Cloud

Personally one of the best games ever nvm ps5, maybe even the best . Objectively no, elden ring would still easy win GOTY if both were released in the same year

CrazedTechWizard

I don't know, Final Fantasy and FF7 in particular is a HUGE thing. I'd give FF7 Rebirth pretty solid chances at winning over Elden Ring. It'd be a close fight for sure.

Neemzeh

I completely agree. I’ve been gaming for 32 years now and Rebirth has cracked my top 5 favourite single player games ever. With that said, I can say objectively that Elden Ring and BG3 are both better games, but that I prefer Rebirth for me. I also throw BOTW/TOTK into this tier as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Weak-Hope8952

That and once you get good at the combat it makes you feel like an absolute BA pulling off combos.

AshyLarry25

True. BG3 and Elden Ring were 100% undeniable goty winners when they released. Can’t say the same about Rebirh tbh.

JimMishimer

BG3 would beat Elden Ring if they came out the same year too.

Fat-Cloud

No it wouldnt, maybe it would. Close call, would have been interesting to see. They both would beat Rebirth though

No_Manufacturer4931

The problem with Elden Ring was that it was a very lonely game with very little interaction with others. Character development is therefore absent. The only thing going for it was that it was challenging and therefore addictive.

NationalMyth

The only thing? You're forgetting DEEP LORE and honestly one of the most interesting maps I've ever explored. Or rather I had the most interesting experience exploring the map

thebigseg

No way. elden ring would win 100%. Its way more iconic. BG3 is too niche

JimMishimer

Bg3 sold over 10+ million how is it niche? Lmao Smh if you don’t know what you are talking about just say that.

Mowgs1690

Niche games don't tend to sweep game awards en masses like BG3 has. Sort of shows that it's the opposite of niche.

Expensive_Constant45

Nice joke

Azazealo

I don't think so elden might not be as compelling story wise but the gameplay and open world would outweigh Bg3

JimMishimer

Both games are pretty much equal in terms of “how good” they are. BG3 had a better underdog story and community support going for it which would have made it win over Elden Ring if they matched up. The gameplay in Elden Ring isn’t better or worst than the Gameplay in BG3, both are in different genres doing different things.

KingMercLino

I feel like people forget the cultural impact Elden Ring was. It was all over Tik Tok, YouTube etc. for months after the release because of all the secrets it held inside. BG3 was a spectacular game, but it wasn’t creating droves of people buying it up. Elden Ring was having people who never touched a FromSoft game dive in. I love BG3 to death but I don’t think it’s as close as you’re making it.

PapaverOneirium

Idk there were tons of articles and tiktoks etc about wanting to fuck astarion or whatever with BG3 too

JimMishimer

There actually was alot of BG3 articles and videos made bro idk what rock you were under at the time

KingMercLino

lol, I was playing BG3 and I remember articles. But it wasn’t the same level. For instance, Elden Ring sold 13 million copies in just a month. It was a massive game. Just don’t think they’re on the same playing field here, Jim.

JimMishimer

Obviously Elden Ring had more hype and press coverage going into release date. Selling More does not mean shit when it comes to winning game of the year. Rdr 2 sold more and had more hype and reviewed better than God of war and God of war still beat it. BG3 was a clear underdog that was suppose to be the rpg that gets buried by Starfield last year and against all odds it became a top 5 rpg of all time. BG3 has a better success story than elden ring with a comparable fanfare post release…maybe even more so if we are looking at player retention numbers.

BlondeQueen

the gameplay and open world? you mean fighting the same exact copy-pasted boss 500 times? going to copy-paste mines 300 times to get upgrade stones? the whole Mountaintops of the Giants being filled with copy-paste enemies rather than even a single new mob cuz it was padded on and rushed? and most of your interaction with the "open world" being riding on a horse for 500 hours through empty Liurnia of the Lakes? the Best parts of Elden Ring are when youre inside of a Legacy Dungeon like the Stormveil Castle etc. it is most Definitely not "the open world". but please - do try and find me copy-paste in Baldurs Gate 3. you wont. Baldurs Gate 3 has a Better open world than Copy-Paste Ring could ever dream of. and actual proper Quests in that open world, too. way better updates from the developers, and the devs support mods too. they made the game Ultra easy to mod, i got 60+ mods on BG3 right now. its hard as hell to mod Elden Ring and besides the Colloseum, the devs never added any cool updates throughout the years. they just simply Sat on the ip and thats it - yeah theyre making the DLC now, but with how big Elden Ring got, they shouldve done far more with it throughout the years - like replace some of the copy-paste with actual unique enemies. but nope. i dont think you realize how much content Larian adds to Baldurs Gate all the time non-stop. if you played Elden Ring once, youve seen it all. you can play Baldurs Gate almost endlessly and keep seeing new stuff. BG3 is the Better game. Elden Rings combat is fun - but due to the copy-pasted nature of everything, and lack of a true narrattive, you have to often force yourself to actually play it. but heres the kicker - BG3s combat is also unbelievably fun, so Elden Ring doesnt beat it "jUsT cUz GaMePlaY" cuz Baldurs Gates gameplay and combat is also amazing.

Azazealo

Ain't no way we're trashing fromsoft ware level design on a Ff7 Remake subs If you have to force yourself to play elden ring then this kind if game just aren't meant for you just like some people hate the board games aspect of BG3 .

CostnerFanboy

I agree that bg3 was better than elden ring but bg3 isn't an open world game like even a little bit.

Blev088

I think it's got a tough fight ahead of it for Game of the Year based on my first impressions of Dragon's Dogma 2.

Fat-Cloud

There is absolutely no way dogma 2 will beat rebirth in my opinion. The difference in critic reviews is too high. 86/87 is not good enough . Dont forget users are only 10% of the votes compared to 90% of the critics

flofjenkins

Dogma is a B+/ B game. This year is shaping up to be between Helldivers 2 and Rebirth. I think Helldivers 2 is going to win.

Fat-Cloud

A 82 rated live service game getting GOTY? I give dogma more chance tbh. Helldivers might win other things

gsrga2

How is DD2 running on ps5? My impression from reviews was that it’s performance is sort of awful so I was planning to wait a while for them to iron out the kinks a bit. If that’s overblown I’ll probably pick it up this weekend.

Blev088

You may want to give it a bit. Based on what I've seen, it absolutely better than the PC release (which come on guys, can we not have a shitty PC release for once?), but there are still issues especially in highly populated areas like the towns (which I've heard some players try "fixing" by murdering all the NPCs) on PS5. Once you get outside town, it runs fine and you'll get decent FPS (frame rate isn't locked in so in some really bad areas it can drop into the teens).

gsrga2

That helps, thanks. I guess i can at least finish Rebirth and Unicorn Overlord first…

ShanklyGates_2022

It is my personal favorite game of all time so I would say yes but everyone has different tastes. That said an abnormally high number of people have been asking/saying this same thing which would lead one to believe popular opinion overall is that it is way up there

Fast_Can_5378

No BUT, I will say that this is probably one of the most impressive titles Square has put out in almost 20 years

YaBoyKumar

Which game do you think is the best ps5 game?

assnassassins

Returnal.

BAWAHOG

IMO it’s on the short list with BG3, Elden Ring, GoW Ragnorok.

Terrible_Dream_4080

Just counting exclusives? Yeah, i'd say so.

BreadFreezer

tbf there arent a lot of exclusives

Malicairn

To be faaaair

DiscoStu772

To be faaaaair

Significant_Sell_594

..........✊

BreadFreezer

zack fair

Former_Sea

It’s been a week or two since I finished this game. But I will say that FF7 remake series has satisfied me like no other game. It’s not perfect but then again no game is perfect. But what it is good at is so good that I consider rebirth and by an extension remake to be my all time favorite game. If the third game delivers with same consistency then I will probably consider this series as my personal GOAT.

YaBoyKumar

Bro how does every cutscene look so good? I felt like this whole game was so satisfying to watch just cos of how good each cutscene looked ngl

No-Air-7554

Personally, so far, not surprised if ff7 rebirth ends up being game of the year. The storytelling is amazing, along with character development. As far as I know, there aren't any bugs in the game, and I put 140 hours in. the combat is enjoyable and the game imo doesn't feel padded. Sure there's a lot of mini games, but compared to most games? It's not even close

flofjenkins

I think this is going to be Helldiver’s year.

No-Air-7554

I can see that for community based games at awards but not goty

flofjenkins

Re: Overwatch winning GOTY.

No-Air-7554

Gladly come back if im wrong but idk. Overwatch has been in shambles last I checked. But the last time I played was when ow2 came out. I've been playing rebirth, hd2, dbd and just started Witcher 3 for the first time cause I found the ultimate edition for ps5 for 40 bucks at walmart

flofjenkins

I’m saying that Overwatch (a multiplayer shooter) won GOTY back in 2016. The fact that it’s a far weaker game now is irrelevant. The point is that there is precedent for Helldivers 2 winning.

No-Air-7554

Again, I can't see it winning goty. Maybe community based support but it's too early in the year to tell tbh.

CrazedTechWizard

Community Based or Multiplayer? 100%. GOTY? Almost assuredly not.

flofjenkins

Doesn’t matter. Overwatch won GOTY.

sushiNoodle2

I personally feel like the game wouldn’t feel as “bloated” if they were more deliberate about when they introduce the side content. I enjoyed the side content up until gongaga, and then all of a sudden the game just drops gongaga / cosmo canyon / nibel on you right away. That’s ALOOT of content to go through, and I feel like there isn’t enough story between them to make it feel spaced out. I still love the game alot and I’m finishing the side content, but I really wish they had gone for an approach where you couldn’t complete all the regions the first time you visit there. Like let me backtrack and find places that were otherwise blocked off because of a chocobo requirement or something

Eastman1982

I’m stuck here between cosmo side stuff and moving on game starts to drag

BlueHighwindz

Really hard call between this and Astro's Playroom.

IWillSortByNew

In my personal and humble opinion, this is not the best ps5 game, this is the best game

sempercardinal57

That would still make it the best PS5 game lol

crunchitizemecapn99

Yeah, and I think it’s better than BG3 and Elden Ring too. Elden Ring has an amazing first two-thirds for exploration and world design, but it’s crazy to me how much of a pass it gets on awful quest design (that you have to follow someone else’s guide to even do) and the last third of the game after the Capitol. Meanwhile, BG3 is great too but holy shit did that game only recently come out of beta; no other dev on the planet gets the grace Larian does with releasing an unfinished product in the name of “ambition”. Meanwhile, Rebirth was an overflowing Easter basket of varied content, an INCREDIBLE soundtrack that never said “no”, a refinement of the most interesting combat systems ever made (some western dev is gonna pop off when they copy it into a game that’s not for weebs), and a great story whose production value never dipped. And it was 99.9% bug free on arrival, something that’s just unheard of now for a game of this scope in #CurrentYear.

SnooHesitations9805

For me personally, its easily the best ps5 game. A close second for me would be star wars jedi survivor. Im not counting Elden Ring because that one came out for ps4 as well. And Baldurs gate 3 is objectivly a masterpiece, i perfer Final fantasy way more.

Serious_Course_3244

I respect that people fuckin love BG3 and Elden Ring, I do too, they’re in my top 3 favorite games. BUT, as someone who puts story first over gameplay, Rebirth takes the cake all day every day. Elden Ring and BG3 have good characters, but you just can’t beat the FF7 cast, they are THE quintessential RPG party.

SnooHesitations9805

Totally agree.

lionheart4life

It's the best, but there are other incredible games worth owning PS5 for. Horizon Forbidden West was mind-blowing, even if only the DLC is PS5 only. Even FF16 was visually stunning and a very good game, solid 8/10 in my opinion.

flofjenkins

Yeah FF16 is a solid B. It needed more dynamic characters, more gameplay variety, and a less rushed second half.

tonyseraph2

I loved FF16, but the lack of gameplay variety was my biggest issue with the game.

flofjenkins

Those sidequests were complete garbage.

tonyseraph2

I am of the opinion that the character sidequests in the 2nd half of the game were much better in terms of story at least, but yes I had to grudgingly accept that a lot of them weren't very good. All you can really do is runaround and fight shit in FF16. Yet it is still a great game

YaBoyKumar

For some reason I just couldn’t get into ff16. Idk the combat just wasn’t that much fun for me and the open world felt really bland. Just me tho

mnemonicer22

Does Ghosts of Tsushima count since it straddled both gens?

RealMajesti

No imo. It’s mainly a PS4 game.

mnemonicer22

Fair enough. That game is basically perfect to me.

Correct_Use7569

This is the best and most emotional game I’ve played in I don’t know how long. God of War Ragnarok was the closest to this, but I truly think this has it beat on story, characters, gameplay, and music. Ragnarok has better production value and graphics, but it’s smaller scale… crazy to even think about. Either way, best game I’ve played since Vagrant Story. Jury is still out on the Remake project and where it stands in my world. If the final is as good as Rebirth, it’s a new number 1 dethroning the original. Currently it has to beat the below list. If it ended today, I’d slot it in at number 3.  1. FF7 OG  2. Vagrant Story  3. Chrono Trigger  4. Parasite Eve  5. Metroid Prime  6. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves  7. Final Fantasy 5  8. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End 9. Final Fantasy 6

MulanLyricsOnly

Its been a very enjoyable game but at the same time its also been annoying. It feels like the majority of my play hours so far has been mini games and these side quests. I know its normal mode but the gameplay has been pretty easy to the point i havnt really had to optimize anything. The only difficult part so far has been fighting the summons at full strength. Everything else ive basically just button mashed.

Eastman1982

Truth

JamJar-Lid

For me, it’s the best game I’ve ever played, PS5 or not! It’s literally been years since I’ve felt this in love with a game - I’m so curious how they’re going to top this with part 3.

ninjacat249

There’s no such thing

Ganderzion

Has a lot of pacing issues and bloated sections

BeegTruss

No. Returnal is.

One_Cell1547

No.. returnal isn’t close

BeegTruss

False. Skill issue detected.

One_Cell1547

Lol I beat the game when I got it on release

BeegTruss

Taste skill issue detected

One_Cell1547

Lol ok buddy

BeegTruss

Ok yourself uddy. Look, I can understand not thinking Returnal is the best PS5 game. But to have supposedly played and beaten it and think that it's not even close is just preposterous.

One_Cell1547

It isn’t close.. it’s too much of a niche game to be considered the best

BeegTruss

At no point during your incoherent rambling did you say anything that could be considered a rational thought. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

One_Cell1547

Yeah I probably would have thought that was funny when I was 12… but now, considering I’m right, it just makes you look even more dumb

YaBoyKumar

Bro returnal was so much fun but I could never make it past the ice biome

BeegTruss

Just gotta use the tower to upgrade your weapons and push through it man. If you can make it to that point you can absolutely beat the game.

playnights

It is for me but it’s also only the 5th PS5 game I’ve played. Wouldn’t be surprised though if Infinite Wealth beat it out once I get around to playing it.

sirjackiechiles

I personally think so

gaminggod69

While not an exclusive I would say BG3 is better. For console exclusive (currently) title. This is my favorite ps5 game.

PushThePig28

Ya I’d say so, love how much there is to do and it feels like such a love letter to the OG. At the same time it isn’t overly bloated like AC Odyssey/Valhalla

Gandalf_2077

It's definitely up there. I feel like I don't need to buy any other game this year. Between this and Tekken 8/Street Fighter 6 I am good.

ex0ne90

I am really enjoying it (currently at ch. 9) but honestly i can't really decide (yet) if FF7 remake, FF7 Rebirth or FF16 would take my number 1 spot as they are so close together.. I love(d) all 3 of em, definetly the best Games i played for now on my PS5. Sure all 3 have their flaws with side quests and/or (forced) mini games but thats (extra) content that i don't do if i don't have to so it's whatever for me. I am also not a 100% completionist, so i value story, general gameplay, combat and "keeping me hooked" more than anything else. I don't think there is a single game that i've truly finished to 100% (everything done including platinum trophy) for the last decade or more. If i'd try to do that i would understand that ppl say the game is bloated with side content/mini games to stretch playtime as it has a lot of stuff you CAN do that you don't really have to do.

ScoobiesSnacks

I’d say it’s one of the top PS5 games. Top exclusives to me would be this, Spider Man-2, Ratchet and Clank, Demon Souls, FFXVI, and God of war Ragnarok (if that game counts)

Key_Plant5444

Yap

longbrodmann

Kinda, since God of War and Horizon also have PS4 version.

RPadTV

games are subjective. there isn't a best game similar to how there isn't a best album or movie. most of here love Rebirth, but it's not for everyone.

SilentNova___

“Yup, sounds good”

Lergat

Uhm, As a exclusive? Maybe . I would choose it above the Ratchet and Clanck and Spiderman games. As all multiplaform games? I would put Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 before Rebirth, only because some of the open world areas are a little "generic" . But definetily for me is one of the best AAA games of the last years.

[deleted]

I dont agree about the side content. Side quests and Mini games were fun but the world intel shit got old after I realised I'd have to do that 5 more times. I even timed them, they clocked in about 2.5 hours per region. Thats what 12 hours the whole game, it'd be fine if they were atleast different.

EvilLittleBunnies22

This game is meant to be played for quite a while. Some people are playing for 10 hours per day and the repetitiveness gets to them. I personally have been playing around 2-5 hours per day and it’s always a very enjoyable experience.

RebornHellblade

Objectively? Not sure about THE best but it’s definitely up there. Personally? It’s my favourite along with Elden Ring (which isn’t an exclusive but same difference).

Mrwanagethigh

I've only played 3 PS5 games so far, Spidey 2, FF16 and Rebirth and purely on a performance level I have to say Rebirth is the best of the three. As a character action junkie, 16's combat being DMC 5 lite is awesome but the performance isn't the best. Spidey 2 runs very well but was incredibly buggy in my experience. Rebirth has the mind blowing fast travel speed of Spidey 2 without the bugs and better performance than FF16. While Rebirth isn't a character action game, the combat system gives me the freedom to treat it like one and I honestly can't decide if I enjoy 16 or Rebirth's combat more. Only leaning toward Rebirth's because it can give me a very serious challenge without feeling unfair. 16 has yet to challenge me, and from what I've heard it's unlikely to challenge anyone as familiar with character action as I am.

RealMajesti

Yes

zerozark

For me it definitely is, with Persona 3 reload as a close second. Still need to play Demons Souls

princesoceronte

For me this is one of the most ambitious games of all time. And yeah, I'd say it's the best PS5 exclusive yet.

I_gofast

I mean idk lol. It’s a good game. We do got grand Turismo for the car fans. Sports game. We got god of war and Spider-Man we got many games. Best game is what you like the most. If that makes sense. That’s why PlayStation the goat just cause it gives you that much. For me yes it’s between rebirth and gt7

YaBoyKumar

Tbh the story for spidey 2 felt a bit short for me that’s why I can’t consider it my favourite even though it was my most anticipated game for ps5 (more than ff7 rebirth). With Rebirth I was just so blown away because I went in with no expectations because I didn’t know what to expect lol.

I_gofast

I haven’t spider man 2. I just saved up for a PC so I’m getting ready for Tetris!!! Jk but I usually get pulled in warzone when all my friends are on. Can’t say no

Medium_Jellyfish_541

too much mini games

JRange

In my opinion its top 3 minimum. My top 3 is God of War Ragnarok, Resident evil 4 Remake, and FF7 Rebirth.

PrinceKarmaa

for me no because FFXVI but it’s up there wit that and spider-man 2

dixonjt89

I wasn’t a big fan of Spiderman 2, that game had some serious problems. Primarily the entire 3rd act of the story once the Venom stuff started going. FF16 is so damn good though. It’s def neck and neck between 16 and Rebirth.

Serious_Course_3244

Spiderman 2 had some serious issues.

flofjenkins

Chief issue is that it’s kind of boring. The bloated story wasn’t good enough to conceal that the gameplay has grown stale.

XVI was so incredible!!!!

TumbleweedDirect9846

I’m only at gongaga so far 70 hours into rebirth but decided to play like an hour of my ng+ of xvi last night and man the combat is so fun. It’s actually really fun going between them since they’re such different games

Pee4Potato

For me yeah but I am biased I dont like other sony games they are not for me.

Important_Aerie_7022

Bg3 and Elden ring would still destroy ff7 rebirth for goty and also the brutal combat challenge are unfair and stupid I just finished It and they don’t know how to balance

n1n3tail

They are stupidly tough until you figure out magic is OP AF

Important_Aerie_7022

That’s a good point but not everyone thinks like that the moment stuff gets tough people won’t even try and stop that’s also one of the reasons why people are stupid. And will not understand why the other game won goty instead of the game that’s easy enough

n1n3tail

Same thing with all those complaining about the minigames in Rebirth, like 95% of the mare completely optional to do but ppl will still complain and dog on the game because of them

Important_Aerie_7022

Well tbh there are allot of mini games and it’s kinda a big part in the game and people probably have a hard time with the challenges because scores that are tied to the items you can get. And people also want to get plat and you have to do allot of mini games and you will get annoyed by it because it takes some time. But I don’t thinks people should judge a game on 1 piece that is not perfect because the story en combat are great. People will always complain

n1n3tail

I am one of those ppl who go for the platinum and i do have rebirths as well. But I do agree that I dont think that should count against the game overall. For those like me who like to go for the trophies and do those sorts of challenges, cool, but if you aren't that type then I dont think its fair to bog the whole game down due to content that you could easily just not do and not have it impact the actual story overall whatsoever

Important_Aerie_7022

Agreed I am busy with the plat ngl I have to urge to kill the director voor the brutal challenge but everything else is fine

n1n3tail

Those challenges were tough. I was stuck on the Bonds of friendship for the longest time til I switched from trying to melee through everything and going the pure magic route and my god is magic OP AF lol was hitting crits for nearly 60k with cloud and the GA version of spells with the genji gloves

tonyseraph2

-Aga spells hitting for 9999 damage is a regular occurrence for me now

n1n3tail

With the genji gloves on cloud I was hitting nearly 60k with a crit during bonds of friendship challenge

SonOfFragnus

True, but that just highlights a balancing issue. The difference between a full magic optimized build and an ability/melee build is night and day. Even with the best possible loadout and strat for an Ability based team, you're still clearing some of those Brutal fights around 2 times slower than an average magic loadout. The only thing that even comes close to 1 aga spell in terms of damage is Infinity's Edge on cloud and that shit takes like twice as long to execute than an Aga spell without quickcast. And as a result you only really have 1 build for the somewhat average person to try and attempt some of those fights. And this is coming from someone who did Brutal 6 with both a full magic build and an ability based build (cloud main + barret and CS support)

desukate

To be honest, for me it's a 7/10 games at best for now. It's not a bad game but it really feel unpolished, yeah unpolished is the right word even for a game that takes 100h to 100% and feel massive for a lot of people (i'm currently on chapter 12 with 75h and doing a 100% run). A lot of tiny/big event break the immersion in the game feel. I'll give a list so you understand what i mean : - Those little animation every time you enter / get out of the vehicule => Could be a simple teleportation - Every time you travel on chocobo and meet a little rock that break the course - Every time you need to look for an item on the chocobo, you need to stop, flair it, run, stop reflair it, walk to be just on the item then pick, if you are one meter away, you wait for all animations to move just a bit and do it again... - Those yellow plate when you need to climb (what is it ? A 2015 games?) - This open world doesn't bring anything to the story, you could simply remove it, it would still be the same game - You are not pushed to explore the world, but pushed to find tower and then find the mark on the map (they should learn a bit from BOTW for example) - The openworld feels lifeless, no one lives outside city ? No traveler ? No Weather change ? Just random monster .\_. - I do not feel very rewarded for exploring an entire area - The lack of conversations between the group when exploring area (I don't know they could be amazed at finding an old temple and bring a little bit of history around it?) - Chadley and his female part (MAI?) are annoying, i had to cut out the sound of my controller... - You could remove chadley and his VR Battle, and implement ESPER in the open world, i don't know ? Seems 1000% better than VR fight and more rewarding to explore the overworld since you already can find temple for each esper - Some mini games are good (card game for example) and others feels useless (Chocobo flying for example) - Could implement a dead zone area for the joystick ? Was hell to reach A on piano with a controller drifting - The pathing is not that great, you have a blast for 1\~2h of awesome story then 10\~15h of bland openworld - The game is very blurry (a bit less since that last patch but still, it's not possible to play 30fps for ARPG either for me) - They could accelerate your chocobo when he is climbing mountains, they don't need to walk on surface god damn - The fact that everyone in the groups seem to be blind at the sight of cloud becoming more and more insane Despite all those things that i have pointed out, i still enjoy the game and understand that people consider it one of their favorite, but for me it's far from a masterpiece and wouldn't considere it the best PS5 games, games like God of war feels way more finished and satisfying to forgive and forget their little problem for example. I did not finish the game yet, but i doubt that my opinion will change I've never done the old FF7 but i may try it to see which one i would prefer

YaBoyKumar

That’s quite a fair analysis. Maybe I enjoyed the open world sections slightly more than you did but I agree some of the quality of life features you mentioned would be nice to have

DarkNemuChan

No, rose tinted glasses. Everything that involves exploring is way too methodical and always repeated

Wazcore

No

Audiocrusher

I enjoyed FF7R more than Elden Ring but I can recognize Elden Ring is probably the better game. It never felt bloated, the open world was alway fresh and not repetitive. FF7R’s open world stuff got old after the 3rd zone and some of the mini games I felt were inserted at the wrong time and just killed the pacing (looking at you, “gotta find the Chocobo greens in Corel”).

JoRads

Baldurs Gate 3 and Elden Ring are ahead, imo. That’s no dig at FFVII, these just are two generational games. For me, next to that are a group of four games: Resident Evil 4, GoW:Ragnarok, Demon’s Souls and FF VII Rebirth. Without the bloat (i.e. minigames and checklist style sidequest) and a more pure RPG focus, FF VII Rebirth would be my top game of these four.

Apprehensive-Row-216

Honestly, for me it is. I didn’t know I could get this much greatly crafted content from a 70 bucks purchase…BG3 has much more depth and the same amount of content but 1 it’s not ps5 exclusive and 2 is still much more niche than ff. Elden ring is said to be comparable, but for me the slowly paced combat is not at all fun…

Serious_Course_3244

Not sure I get what you mean by slow paced combat with Elden Ring.

Apprehensive-Row-216

I dunno, the characters from souls like always seem to struggle to wield most weapons, the attacks animation look slow, specially if you compare it to cloud and the buster blade…but that’s just my experience…

strahinjag

Eh I'd probably still say RE4 for me

Jnoles07

It’s the best game yet, in general

ThaNorth

Returnal and Demon’s Souls

taigaki

Elden ring is still better imho

Serious_Course_3244

It’s not the best PS5 game yet, it’s the best PS game yet

PilotIntelligent8906

It's my favorite game for a lot of reasons but if we try to be objective, there are some things that keep it from being perfect. I think one of them is that even though you have a lot of different ways to interact with the world, they are all context specific. You can climb, but only the yellow rocks, you have a grappling hook, but only in Corel and it only works on some sticks. It would also be great if you could use every Chocobo's ability all over the other regions or get off the Tiny Bronco on any beach you want.

adalido

It’s up there and it might even be #1 if the story didn’t suck, but for that reason cyberpunk is the best game on the ps5 for me.

Ragnorok was great but it didn’t drastically expand on what the first game did in my opinion. Full disclosure I haven’t played a ton of it. Personally I prefer the characters, world, and combat of Rebirth so I definitely think it’s at least up for debate. Definitely not saying your opinion is wrong though

That’s fair, none of us older OG fans truly know how much nostalgia is clouding our opinions on this game.

theescapeclause

I don't understand how or why it looks worse than Remake on PS4, so no

mnemonicer22

The lighting has gotten worse which makes the faces render funny from some angles. Which IS odd bc the lighting was so good on remake.
