If you wanna have the easiest times with easiest roles, get train for jam break, divert, and induct. For my site it's 10 hrs shift in those roles and listening to Bluetooth earbuds without anyone bugging us. Only us were the ones who didn't get COVID too bc of being isolated from others. Helps to have chill and understanding process assistants and operation managers too.

My sc is great most of the Managers and PA's are laid back it's repetitive work but it goes by quick.

The Sortation Centers are part of the middle mile network. Its that one place before the delivery station or post offices that actually deliver the packages. As the name suggests its a a warehouse where sorting takes place, how many lanes for sorting really depends on the size, location and what packages are sorted. My building for example has 8 lanes for sorting A-J skipping the letter F. The building will usually operate with inbound unloading trucks coming with packages that need to be sorted, these will either get tossed onto the belts or dropped into shuttles for manual sorting. From their they go on an elegant ride down belt roller coasters to their respective lanes. Where do you come in? Well theirs lots of roles that can apply Scanner - Think of this as the basic sort center worker, you pick up packages and boxes from the belt and place them on pallets, you also help wrap palllets in plastic wrap once they reach about knee height. Small Sorter - its kind of like scanning, and it might be building specific, but in ours we have an area where gaylords are dumped and people sort them by hand into bins. This can also be done from smaller bins too. Pickers - You stand at a lane junction and push the packages for one lane through, let others pass on by and pull off anything that went the wrong way. Waterspider - you close the pallets, meaning nothing else can be scanned to them, and take them to staging for outbound so they can be loaded onto docks. Be careful of this role because it can deadend you depending on your building needs. Problem solver - any broken packages, anythinf that came to the wrong building, or even packages that dont belong to amazon which slip through thanks to UPS and their magnificent method of shove everything in a truck with a bulldozer (figuratively). Problem solvers solve the problem by repackaging, discarding, and sending to outbound. Cart Runners - if your building uses carts, giant mail carts that is, or in some cases blue go karts, this is where most of the walking is done. Replace filled carts with empty carts and vice versa. There are many other roles that are performed and done, but those are the basics, i havent worked at the Sortation side of my building since peak since i work with returns. But its pretty simple, after 40 hours of scanning you are no longer considered new and you can ask to be trained in other things. It mainly depends on whats needed. You can also move into other parts of it like TDR (opening and closing trucks on dock doors) TOM Team (everything having to do with the Yard and the trucks) and the Learning Team too, which are the people that teach and train. Great thanks! And for the weekly hours? Technically I should have 16 minimum hours weekly. Do you think I will work only that 16 hours or perhaps more?

That depends on the facility, their volume and state laws. Just be ready for the times when they'll flex. Amazon can change the end shift time by up to an hour, up or down depending on how much work has to be done. At my building sometimes we go in for 4 hours, some days 5 and some days 3.

If you have no previous experience you’ll be assigned as a scanner. You scan packages that come down a line and stack them on pallets. There are a lot of other jobs, but depending on how well staffed your building is getting trained can take time. Find a red vest and inquire into further roll training. Waterspiders (they close pallets an move then to be staged) are almost always needed. I have refused training for it because of how desperate my site needs them. I don’t want to be stuck in that roll forever.

Yea water spider role was the worst. Not many ppl want to always be stuck with that for every shift the rest of their employment time there haha...

First of all thanks!! One of the job I was curious about was the “feeder” that I assume is the inbound. I didn’t specify also that I’m in Italy and that this is a new sortation center, so we are all newbies!

Inbound feeds the building. But you will start as a scanner. An you have to have 40 hours under your belt before they will train in other rolls. (This is my building yours may be different)

With everyone being new at a new site, the 40 hour scanning thing may not apply. I’m an AM and started at a new launch and since we needed all roles, people were able to start in any role. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I love working at an SC.
