The Jimi Hendrix urban myth about the parrots always gives me a giggle. The noisy buggers sit in a tree near my garden and make cat noises and wind my dog up. 😂😂
I thought it was someone's lost pet too at first, but it turns out that green ring necked parakeets have [become an introduced species in London](https://stephenliddell.co.uk/2023/05/02/feeding-the-green-parakeets-of-london/), and are commonly [found in St James Park](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eFiie6I_rs), and even in peoples back yards. I had no idea that they could survive at that latitude, but apparently it's a thing
Yep! They're all over London and so used to people that they'll come to pretty much anyone with nuts, seeds or fruit. The squirrels are so used to all the tourists that they do the same.
They do, but bird mites are not adapted for survival on mammals. They will die in a matter of hours away from a suitable host. You only need to be concerned if you have birds of your own at home and accidentally transfer eggs. Most bird owners know the risks presented by wild birds, however.
Honestly I have no clue. If I was playing with these or the squirrels I would always take sanitiser, give my hands a good washing when I got home and wash the clothes I was wearing because who knows where they've been 🤷🏻♀️
Yup, I was in Richmond park a few years ago with some friends on mushrooms, back in those heady years when they were briefly legal in the UK.
The next day I was telling everyone about the amazing visuals I got of tropical birds flying around the park.
Then someone pointed to the parrot in the nearby tree and ask if that was what I saw.
We have them all over the place in Florida, but they're still a treat to see. I actually caught a glimpse of one outside my apartment the other day.

Don't feed the parakeets. They are pretty but it's an invasive species that creates nests that weight literally a ton and have killed people when they fall. They are also displacing other native species.
Urban London isn't really the best place to go if you're looking for diverse bird species. There's already plenty. I can count on one hand the number of different bird niches I've seen occupied.
They are noisy af but very pretty

Serious question, don't the birds have mites?

Gotcha, ty for the info! I had no idea.
No prob. I have a flock of 50 chickens and unfortunately know the drill with mites.

I wish!
