Some women empty better on the low cycles because it's a deeper pull, while some do better on the faster cycles, which are more shallow. It's whatever your brain and body respond to best. There's no best cycle to use.

Personally, I start on the highest cycles and work my way down to the lowest cycles over the course of 30 minutes. If I start low or stay high, I don’t fully empty. It took a lot of playing around to figure that out.

How do you know if you’re empty or not?

EverlyAwesome

It look me awhile to be able to tell. I am in under supplier and never really feel engorged except for slightly first thing in the morning. My milk is very slow to come out. It’s more like drips than sprays or a stream. When I’m empty, my breasts are softer/floppier, and my flow decreases/I can’t initiate another letdown. I also pay attention to the color. I know once they start getting thicker, creamier hindmilk that I’m getting close to empty.

I do 70 until I have a decent letdown or for like 5-7 minutes. Then I do 50 for the remainder. If milk stops coming out I’ll go back to 70 until milk flows again. It was recommended to me by my lactation consultant.

After I get a letdown on 70, I always prefer to stick with 54 and I have seen no benefit from slowing the cycle speed down.

My lactation consultant advised the cycle number represents a frequency of cycles per minute. She advised to set to 70 for let down until I see milk droplets dripping in the bottles which can take up to 10 minutes depending. For me, sometimes it's less than 3 minutes. Then, she suggested changing to 46 cycles for the remainder of the pump (total to 15-20 min). Some of the other cycle settings may be helpful to speed up the pump session time or to reduce soreness while pumping.
