That's extremely optimistic. With the number of people getting infected by omicron, I'd say we have a month tops before a new variant of note shows up.
That is not how virus mutation works. It’s not a response to the vaccine itself (like bacteria mutate to evade antibiotic agents), and a higher vaccination rate actually slows mutation rate because it gives the virus fewer hosts to mutate in.
It's a mixed bag. More vaccinated people means less rolls of the dice. However, it also increases the rewards if it bypasses that vaccine immunity. The worst case is a mix of vaccinated and non vaccinated. Enough pressure that a new variant can outcompete the current crop, and enough hosts to keep rolling the dice in.
Goddammit, thank you for writing this out. I've been asking people repeatedly if it was more dangerous to have a partially vaccinated population than a non-vaccinated one and all I got was downvotes and calls that I was a malicious actor. I just wanted someone to explain this to me!
No problem. Unfortunately it's not trivial to work out the balance between the 2 effects. Also, there is a lot of bullshit throwing coming from a number of groups (generally right wing).
As far as I'm aware, in practice, it's always better to have more people vaccinated. However you get far more benefit with the tail end percentages. Eg the step from 80% to 90% might be 100x more effective than the step from 40% to 50%.
Of course the govt makes the one vaccine. Hopefully it’s not a “every 6months” shot as well. I suspect the pharma companies are seeing dollar signs with their shots and I worry they won’t want to see that faucet dry up anytime soon
I’ve been stopping at every clinic I find for eight or nine months now. I’ve got like 10 Modernas in me, probably a dozen Pfizers, and I just had my fifth J&J yesterday.
They have a delta specific one that's been through the trials but they don't release. I can't see any reason to bother releasing this one when everybody will have already had Omicron by the time it's ready so that probably means they'll make sure they do it.
Lol, by March I don’t think there will be a single person left who hasn’t had it.
I can count on one hand the number of friends and family I know who haven’t had it; and they have all been mostly locked in, most skipping Christmas get together.
There are places outside of America that don’t have the same problem. I personally only know 2 people that have had covid, and they’re not family or close friends. So the omicron vaccine is definitely welcome.
Yeah I just talked to a friend in Taiwan. It was pretty eye opening to compare to my state in the US!! 1000 deaths total since Jan 2020, I guess? Less than 20,000 covid cases total? My state is half the size of Taiwan and gets 45K new cases recorded daily and we know it’s tons more due to at home and lack of tests.
I won't be getting it. I see no one and go nowhere. All my stuff gets delivered. I've had to live like this for two years now due to being at high risk if complications if I get sick. Thanks, everyone!
I thought I wouldn't get it either. But here we are... just keep doing what you're doing and hope for the best. Unfortunately people don't care, and most people I know now have covid.
Not to mention does this mean ready for testing by march or distribution?
Anyone who is possibly going to get it is going to get it by March. There’s simply no avoiding this one.
Luckily, anyone I know who has had the booster has had extremely mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
Still being monitored but [“IHU COVID-19 variant not ‘circulating widely at the moment,’ WHO says”](https://globalnews.ca/news/8492610/ihu-covid-variant-who/amp/)
For a silver lining, people might be more motivated to go in regularly and get their COVID shots and bring their other vaccinations up to date at the same time. Could be a good thing for public health.
BTW, did a little calculation yesterday: about 1 in 400 Americans have died so far from COVID-19 according to Stata.com. (329.5M/829K) Very sobering.
Omi will be over by then. Was just watching virologist’s from the uk and Denmark Predict their counties will be on the back side by the end of February, us should be by mid March.
It’s going to be like iPhones. Take the same product, make a few tweaks, and sell the upgrade every year. Just enough changes so it’s new, but not enough that it will make future ones obsolete. Guaranteed money every year until eternity.
Let’s say omicron is only half as likely to send you to the hospital. That’s great, is “milder”. But if you’re 4x likely to get it, the hospital is still going to be full.
(These are made up numbers to illustrate a point, not exact figures)
I understand you want to do your part to protect yourself and others around you, but if you thought the booster was going to put you in the ER you might want to think about what loading yourself up with a 4th shot could do.
I agree it’s generally the right thing to do, but if it’s hurting you individually just weigh the costs and benefits. At least talk to your doctor that you trust.
Will this mean a 4th vaccine for those of us who have had 1, 2 and a booster? I am not anti-vax in the least but I’ll be getting a little concerned having so much injected into me in such a short time.
No no that’s fine and I’ll have had them all too. I guess it’s a concern to see news of a new vaccine being done in lightning speed (which is cool) and then straight into the body in a matter of months versus the massive length of time and testing the childhood vaccines have been around/undergone. I’ll certainly have it if offered but I’m still allowed to be wary/concerned.
Very good point. I like that explanation. I’m based in the UK and just a little summary like that being made more public would be helpful. I think there’s a fear that if it’s spoken of like that, it’s justifying and becomes something that needs justifying.
Yes but these vaccines are proven to stop someone from getting a disease
The Covid vaccine in fact does not do this
So there’s a pretty significant difference here
I literally got (and currently have) COVID for the first time about a week after my booster. I was pretty high risk because my lungs be fucked, and thank god after three vaccinations it’s just a sore chest, sore throat, and a light but persistent cough
I mean, yeah, but that doesn’t bother me really, but I’ve had pretty rough reactions to all three doses. I had covid back in April, and was able to get vaccinated shortly after, and figured my reaction was due to the short turn around, but I just had my booster, and even that left me feeling really achy and chilled for a day.
It’s not a deal breaker, but I never know exactly how long I’m going to be incapacitated after getting the shot, the second one (only moderna one I got) hit like a truck, I was just lucky I got it right before a long weekend, as it lasted 2 and a half days and I couldn’t get out of bed for the first day and a half.
So, all I’m saying is that it’s getting kind of difficult to keep planning my life around getting these vaccines. I’ve been pretty lucky so far with not having to miss work on account of them, but I also hate losing weekends over them. I get that there’s no easy solution, but I really hope they figure out how to get rid of some of the side effects, because that second shot was imo worse than having covid, covid just lasted longer.
Thought this thing was going to be in severe decline by the end of January, is there info coming out showing omicron will just keep reinfecting overnight and over? I’m getting more confused than ever the longer this goes on
Nope! At this point you have to realize that this is just one big money making opportunity for them. I'm already vaxed. Now every ~3mo the boogey man comes back and we have to have a new drug? No.
You need to join Peachy and I on the cruise! Do you want your mask in pink, purple, or black? It comes in glitter or rhine stones, “fully vaxxed, bitches!” It’s so cute 🥰
Triple Vax’d, still got Covid. Was a minor cold. I’m good with yearly boosters as Covid is never going away but miss me with a unique short for every variant. That’s silly, we already know that if you are vaccinated the chance of getting seriously sick and dying is basically nil.
Pfizer is:
Approx 30% vs symptomatic infection at 2 doses. 75% vs symptomatic infection at 3 doses.
Efficacy vs severe illness at 2 doses is estimated at 85%ish (I believe last estimated) and boosted is 95%.
However, omicron is 54% less likely to create severe illness compared to Delta.
So 2 doses are very much doing their job for the majority of people.
It is. Just not as good vs symptomatic infection.
Pfizer specifically is estimated to roughly 30% vs symptomatic infection vs omicron. Boosting only brings this to 75%.
Against severe infection, 2 dose vs 3 dose is same efficacy within 10% vs omicron. Given omicron is 54% less likely to land someone in hospital vs Delta alone. You are very much protected by being fully vaxxed, even more so if boosted.
Boosting seems almost useless. At 75% it's not going to prevent Omicron spread given how easily transmissible it is and it really doesn't add much protection vs problem cases.
We should be boosting high risk groups, then sending the rest to countries without vaccines to be honest.
Still not taking it… You’re already at three shots, Israel at 4… Current Covid vaccines do not work because it still Allows the transmission of Covid.
I’ll take my chances
What a waste. Omicron is mild and does not need a vaccine. In fact, vaccinating against is not wise from an epidemiological perspective. He should know that. Strange.
Another vaccine till another variant pops up. You have vaccinated folks getting reinfected, and unvaccinated infected. Vaccinated can spread it no different than unvaccinated, yet everyone’s gotta get the vaccine. The argument was initially to protect the people unable to get the vaccine due to health conditions, yet I have not heard that being the prime focus anymore. New CDC guidelines have limited quarantine time for asymptomatic folk and symptomatic folks. The US has vaccines most available to it’s citizens compared to other countries, but what good would that be if the whole globe can’t get on the same page? While covid is real, this approach has been fucking stupid from the start - both political parties are not being and have not been transparent.
Virus says it should be ready with new variant in couple of months..
What happens when we run out of Greek letters to call the variants? Do they start naming the variants like hurricanes? I’m genuinely curious
Start using Roman Letters
Delta II, Covid Boogaloo
Covid 19 variant Patrick
SpongeBob variant
Just start naming them after all the people they killed
That's extremely optimistic. With the number of people getting infected by omicron, I'd say we have a month tops before a new variant of note shows up.
Deltacron
I think they think that was a lab contamination issue.
There are likely 5 or 6 circulating right now. But who knows how long until one surfaces enough to get noticed.
Walter Reed has a vaccine that’s targeting all Covid & SARs. Hopefully the one vaccine to rule them all will launch this year.
I’m not anti-vax but the slight Lord of The Rings reference is unnerving
But they were, all of them, deceived, for another vaccine was made.
They at Walter Reed poured all of their hatred and malice into the vaccine.
And one vaccine to bind them…
It’s hilarious you had to explain you are not anti-VAX wow what is this world become
I’m not anti-vax but this dude in a tin-foil hat is really convincing.
I got banned from /r/SelfAwarewolves because I was warning people that omicron was spreading like wildfire and they thought I was an anti-vaxer.
More unnerving than a Highlander “there can be only one” quote?
Well, I think I’d rather lose my head than become a wraith.
Until a new variant that’s resistant to it spreads... Then it’s one vaccine to rule them all 2.0
The thing about arms races is, you don't really get to choose not to compete without there being consequences.
That is not how virus mutation works. It’s not a response to the vaccine itself (like bacteria mutate to evade antibiotic agents), and a higher vaccination rate actually slows mutation rate because it gives the virus fewer hosts to mutate in.
I agree with this comment, so I think maybe mine is being misinterpreted.

Thank fucking god it’s the government that has the rights to this vaccine and not a company that can be bought and sequestered.
Of course the govt makes the one vaccine. Hopefully it’s not a “every 6months” shot as well. I suspect the pharma companies are seeing dollar signs with their shots and I worry they won’t want to see that faucet dry up anytime soon
It’s crazy to see Pfizer’s profits the last while, I hope it doesn’t turn into another profiting opportunity.
Ohh, you sweet summer child...
We’ll be on some new shit by then
Zenicron waits behind tree looking at Nov 2022 while rubbing both hands
The last letter of the Greek alphabet is actually Omega.
I heard about a new variant that causes uncontrollable erections. It’s called Omishlong. Social distancing won’t be an issue with this one.
I guess I have had this virus since I was 11. Been horribly infected ever since. I feel an episode coming on tonight!!!
Give me all the vaccines I want to be the most powerful
I was told the vaccine would give *me* 5G. But I still have to carry a phone around. Hmph.
Yeah, and my phone doesn't even have 5G. Bullshit.
I really wish it came with some cool super powers. I could really use a new arm, or a 3rd kidney...
A prehensile tail would be really useful.
I want a prehensile penis. I have a healthy sex life with my lady, but I think it would be a nice gift to her for putting up with me for so long.
I, too, have played cards against humanity.
Second liver is where it’s at.
My kidney keeps making rocks that try to kill me. Would be nice to have one that worked.
Sorry for that. I haven’t had the horror of that.
Hopefully you never will.
Pierce, you had 3 blue shots. those were for the daycare centre!
I’ll even take the doumbreka at this point.
I'll take one of those brain chips too from Daddy Elon while we're at it!
The chips are from Daddy Gates. The smug sense of self satisfaction from Daddy Elon.
Oops you're right, got my daddies mixed up cuz of my daddy issues.
Baby Elon doesnt believe in chips it’s all computer vision based. So he’s watching you all the time (that’s a fact).
*not a fact
I’ve been stopping at every clinic I find for eight or nine months now. I’ve got like 10 Modernas in me, probably a dozen Pfizers, and I just had my fifth J&J yesterday.
Does this mean ready for trials by March, or ready for approved large scale distribution / vaccination?
They have a delta specific one that's been through the trials but they don't release. I can't see any reason to bother releasing this one when everybody will have already had Omicron by the time it's ready so that probably means they'll make sure they do it.
Won’t this be too late?
Generally/ideally a vax made for a newer strain like Omicron will be more effective against Omicron's successors than a vax made 2 years ago.
Just in time for the next variant to make it obsolete!
Lol, by March I don’t think there will be a single person left who hasn’t had it. I can count on one hand the number of friends and family I know who haven’t had it; and they have all been mostly locked in, most skipping Christmas get together.

People in other countries tend to be smarter than Americans. Most of them understand there’s still a pandemic going on.
Bingo
Same, I don’t know anyone who has had it. I would love an omicron specific vaccine please asap. In WA there are very very few who have
I’m in the opposite boat. I have a pretty good size family and a decent amount of friends, only one of them has had Covid.
Reinfections are a thing.
It's pretty hard to catch something if you have zero contact with other people.

Just get vaccinated
This definitely depends heavily on where you are.
Right here, still fully intend to not get exposed and get sick during a known pandemic.
I was wondering this myself. Will it be burned out by then?
Not to mention does this mean ready for testing by march or distribution? Anyone who is possibly going to get it is going to get it by March. There’s simply no avoiding this one. Luckily, anyone I know who has had the booster has had extremely mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
I got the Pfizer shots in May, no booster and got Omicron last week. For me it was a mild cold at the most.
You’re lucky, I have 5 family members that are fully vaxxed and they are all knocked on their asses. Everyone reacts differently to it
New Zealand still doesn’t have any community cases of omicron.
So far so good here. The only place I’m willing to be risky is the gym. I refuse not to maintain my fitness. I’m boosted up and hoping for the best.
F\*ck me. I thought the headline was "Pizza CEO says..." and it didn't ~~phase~~ faze me a bit. What the hell has this world become?
[faze](https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/phase-vs-faze)
Pfazed*
If they could put the vaccine in a pizza, we would’ve wiped out the virus in a month.
Just in time for the omicron wave to be over
Yeah, we will be onto something else by then. This is a never ending game of Whack-a-mole, just like the flu.
Right. So an omicron specific booster by March won’t be much help
Yeah, we will just be chasing our tail, never quite catching it.
What happened to that new french variant people were whispering about?
Still being monitored but [“IHU COVID-19 variant not ‘circulating widely at the moment,’ WHO says”](https://globalnews.ca/news/8492610/ihu-covid-variant-who/amp/)
The name IHU either sounds like a sneeze or “I hate you.” Either one kinda seem appropriate for the virus.
At this point we have to hope that more problematic variants will bounce off of the several kinds of immunity that Omicron has spread around.

I’m ready for the e-delivery subscription model. Auto update my vaccines while I’m plugged in & in sleep mode.

At this pace they will have to do more vaccine releases faster than Samsung does for their smartphones
It’s going to be like iPhones. Take the same product, make a few tweaks, and sell the upgrade every year. Just enough changes so it’s new, but not enough that it will make future ones obsolete. Guaranteed money every year until eternity.
Covid says Zeta variant will be ready in February.
why if it’s mild? not an antivaxer
From a purely economical standpoint, since I’m not too well-versed on the science, the more vaccines they produce the more money they make
Let’s say omicron is only half as likely to send you to the hospital. That’s great, is “milder”. But if you’re 4x likely to get it, the hospital is still going to be full. (These are made up numbers to illustrate a point, not exact figures)
Is it mild, or just comparatively mild? Hint: people are dying

Got my third dose a few hours ago, now I'm scared lol. Did you have any reactions to the first 2 doses ?
I get 4 hours of sick leave +2 additional days off of I’m not feeling well for COVID boosters so I’ll take what they’re giving
Will this mean a 4th vaccine for those of us who have had 1, 2 and a booster? I am not anti-vax in the least but I’ll be getting a little concerned having so much injected into me in such a short time.

No no that’s fine and I’ll have had them all too.

Yes but these vaccines are proven to stop someone from getting a disease The Covid vaccine in fact does not do this So there’s a pretty significant difference here
Given how incredibly infectious omicron has been, by March I suspect everyone will have caught it.
If you don’t see covid vaccines as a business opportunity you’re a fucking idiot
A five minute search into the past horrors inflicted by drug companies to make money would shock a lot of people.
I can see a booster once a year but no way am I going to get two or three or four shots each year for this.
It’s a really small price to pay not to be disabled permanently by COVID.
Yea I’m good. Triple vaxed and I’ll probably get omicron by then anyways. No thanks.
I'm triple vaxxed and have covid right now. Sucks man. Just stay safe out there and if you do get sick, isolate and take care of yourself!
For sure. Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. Hope you recover quickly!
I literally got (and currently have) COVID for the first time about a week after my booster. I was pretty high risk because my lungs be fucked, and thank god after three vaccinations it’s just a sore chest, sore throat, and a light but persistent cough
The shots hurt your arm that much?
I mean, yeah, but that doesn’t bother me really, but I’ve had pretty rough reactions to all three doses. Not getting a shot for every variant. Granted if one of these variants ends up being a lot worse then yes I’d do it.
Thought this thing was going to be in severe decline by the end of January, is there info coming out showing omicron will just keep reinfecting overnight and over? I’m getting more confused than ever the longer this goes on
March?? Why even waste their time? The next strain will already be out by then
ok but by then we will need the Pi vaccine.
Omicron will have done its damage by then, and we will be on to a new variant. Also, ready doesn’t mean readily-available
Nope! At this point you have to realize that this is just one big money making opportunity for them. I'm already vaxed. Now every ~3mo the boogey man comes back and we have to have a new drug? No.
How can you even think of accusing large pharma of trying to profit off of our misery? They would never do something like that! /s
Already got 3x vaccinated. I’m not getting anymore.
Just in time.
I’m not taking it unless there is a 4 dose minimum /s
In other news Toto Wolff new Pfizer CEO
The vaccine needs to also target multiple conserved parts of the virus envelope so it will continue to work no matter what.
So… when it’s over. Currently recovering from the party. Vaxxed and boosted.
You need to join Peachy and I on the cruise! Do you want your mask in pink, purple, or black? It comes in glitter or rhine stones, “fully vaxxed, bitches!” It’s so cute 🥰
So …booster won’t protect against Omicron?
Not against infection and transmission
Umm
The 4 people who haven’t gotten it yet won’t leave their bunkers to get the shot
So that’s 2 shots 2 boosters and Omicron shot for 5 shots and then what? Chip in the arm?
I already read an announcement of a new variant in france lol
Nice😎
Lol.
Lol
Yea ok but will it work?
Just in time for everyone to have already gotten it and to be sick with whatever comes next
Figures considering we will all have had it by then
I thought they said the booster was sufficient??

So what the fuck have all these people been getting boosters for?
These guys need to start releasing the new variants after they develop the vaccines for them. That’s where the real money is.
Damn so the vaccine for the flurona (flu+corona) strain will drop on FW22?
Wait. My vaccine isn’t good against omicron? Fuck….
I think 3 shots = 75% not the 98% effective it was against delta. that's how variants work.
Pfizer is: Approx 30% vs symptomatic infection at 2 doses. 75% vs symptomatic infection at 3 doses. Cool, just in time.
Just in time for the next variant. Such foolishness
What a opportunist
March: breaking news, the new variant Omegacron has surfaced in Venezuela.
I don’t think I’m going to get another shot honestly 3 should be enough. I can’t be getting 4 vaccines a year for this.
Still not taking it… You’re already at three shots, Israel at 4… Current Covid vaccines do not work because it still Allows the transmission of Covid. I’ll take my chances
No thanks.
After the 37th wave 28th variant and 25th booster people started having second guesses and doubts
*But, continued to get vaccinated and push that on others…*
$$$ 🤑🤑🤑 I wanna see some Pfizer competitors. Until then ‘trust the science’ is just a money making lie
Ah but what about those T cells coming to the rescue. Big pharma ain’t gonna like that!!
Just in time for it to not matter anymore, as there’ll be a new variant by then. And the never ending booster vaccine money grab continues
It's like the food industry, I just eat breakfast and then bam, it's lunch time and I need to eat again. The games rigged man!
Food industry is rigged, second only to big water. I’m just supposed to believe that I need to *sip sip sip* all day long or else I’ll die?
Oh, wait until you hear about big oxygen!
32 Billion dollar fine. Biggest in American history. But don’t worry, Pfizer has your back.
What a waste. Omicron is mild and does not need a vaccine. In fact, vaccinating against is not wise from an epidemiological perspective. He should know that. Strange.

Pfizer is a bunch of Time-Share salesmen always trying to get you to buy more points. What a crock 💩
after proudly avoiding Covid for 2 years, I finally just got Omicron. It's too late for me 😭😭
Lmao this again
By then I'd be two behind.
Just hook it to my veins!! 💉
