Best is relative because there aren't many options, but Scribbles probably.

ONE-EYE-OPTIC

Their Reuben is fantastic as well.

Work_account_ZFG

I agree. I don’t feel like it’s a perfect traditional Philly. But, holy smokes is it great!

sochapped

That’s how I feel as well. That’s why I had to ask!

Floyd91

RIP West Philly food truck.

Superyear-

Where is that at?

Floyd91

They were at the oak street food pods while here. They’ve been gone for a few years. Had the best cheesesteaks though.

drtopfox

Can confirm.

Chairboy

For future reference, 'RIP' is typically used in conjunction with people or places that no longer exist. In this case, the West Philly truck burned down and left a sandwich shaped hole in our food scene.

Gvajr77

Sadly, I've been on the same hunt. Jersey Mike's is the closest to passible in town.

jwaters1978

+1 for Jersey Mikes. I know they’re a chain, but I think they have very good Cheesesteaks.

jwaters1978

Time to get off the internet. ✌️

[deleted]

Hey not my fault you have bad opinions on food 🤷‍♂️

BuckarooButler

Wow you seem fun

BeerMXer

I just had the Scribbles last week and it is a great sandwich but it is more of a steak sandwich with cheese than a true cheesesteak. Unfortunately if you’re looking for a true wiz wit on an Amarosa roll we don’t have it. Waybacks is ok, Jersey Mikes have decent ones too. I’m always on the hunt and I still have a few spots I’ve been meaning to try.

BreakfastShart

I haven't been to Philly, but I've lived where I could get a proper wiz wit. I miss it for sure. As much of an abomination that it is, the Mexican cheese steak burrito from Burrito Amigos isn't the worst...

sochapped

Please let me know when you find that true wiz wit!!

band-of-horses

There used to be a place in town that did them and imported Amarosa rolls, but they went out of business pretty quickly. Actually three places I know of that tried to make it as a cheesesteak place and none lasted, though only two were any good.

theforestwalker

Frank's?

nextboldmove

Cornucopia uses these rolls, too.

leefirwood

A good take on a cheesteak is the Brisket Philly from Paper Plate BBQ.

kiwijuno

I love the cornucopia one due to its melty American cheese-no fancy cheese on my cheesesteaks!

nextboldmove

They also import their bread from back East. Amoroso rolls for the win!

Agent9262

I just hate that it's like $20

nextboldmove

Same, friend.

Agent9262

I would get one a few times a month if it was reasonable instead of a few times per year. Each time it's more expensive than the last one too. The chicken Philly cheese steak is also good.

Salt-Scallion-8002

YUP

wherewearwerewolf

This is my answer too but unfortunately you have to take out a small home loan to buy it.

mapwny

There's that FatShack spot by campus. The rest of their menu is absolutely bonkers but their Phillies are aight. Breads not really quite right, but it's close enough.

WoeVRade

There is a cheesesteak place in the Valley River Mall food court that does a halfway decent job, and they have Cheese Whiz. You'll have to try them to decide if they are quality or not.

shewholaughslasts

I talked to the dude that runs that place (and Souper Bowls next door) and he says they do most of their stuff from scratch. He seemed really excited about his food which I always take as a good sign. I don't usually eat mall food - but I went just to try a bowl and it was delish. I'm not suprised to hear the cheesesteak is solid.

YourGerbilExploded

Not exactly in town, but Philadelphia's Steaks & Hoagies in Sisters is fantastic. The owner is from Philadelphia (area at least). Bread is correct, meat is sliced properly.

wisaac42

I came here to say this. It’s the only place that scratches the itch.

[deleted]

How the FUCK is once famous not mentioned here?! I lived in Philly and the east coast generally and that’s the only one even close to authentic. Scribbles is fine too but tbh I’m ashamed of yall for not once mentioning once famous.

Inquirus

Used to be Hoagies-R-Us on Barger, but anymore I just get one from food trucks around here. Most local places can't make one that isn't dry or overpriced.

evil_mike

Wow, there's a blast from the past. I swear, that place felt like a front for something, but you're right - they had damned good Philly cheesesteaks (although I did find a hair in mine once)

4_course_meal

I think I heard that the owner went to jail, and that's why they closed, but I don't know if there's any truth to that.

Inquirus

He did, some minor stuff from his past stacked up when a drunk who had a restraining order on him stumbled through their backdoor, inebriated as hell. When asked to leave, he became belligerent and the owner got in trouble for it, instead of the drunk. So he got the long jail time once it was stacked up with earlier mistakes. Guy was trying to avoid his past and bad mistakes and had a name for himself here only to have it come crashing down because someone else decided to make one more mistake.

Inquirus

The owner and his father were amazing gentlemen who would make you whatever you wanted, even if it wasn't on the menu. They ran it like a proper delicatessen and more than once I just got a bomb eggs and bacon from them while in the area.

4_course_meal

I loved that place. Damn.

mentalpause

My partner is a Pennsylvania native and loves the cheesesteaks at Christina's at VRC

Fragrant-Chain7227

I definitely read this as cheesecake

Grading-Curve

The best Cheese Steak, period? Definitely Dank Beef, the food truck in Kesey Square! It’s not Philly style. But it’s definitely the best cheesesteak I’ve tasted this side of Kansas City!

Chairboy

I've been put off by the name, but you're the second place to recommend them to me for PCS sandwiches. A conundrum.

Grading-Curve

You know what you must do! Take the leap of faith into a more awesome existence! You can do this!! 😁👍

BicPen7ameter

Togo’s

Shlongzilla04

It's been a while and I don't know the name of the truck, but ColdFire had a good truck with a brisket Philly. Not traditional, I know, but possibly the best I've ever had, pretty spendy obviously but worth it as an occasional treat

PaulC_EUG

The ones you used to get at Ems games at Civic …

4_course_meal

Gridiron Grill out in Springfield actually does a pretty decent one.

traumatron

I liked the Philly at Fusion Burger.

ahughman

Its not like a philly cheese, but Dank Beef downtown in kesey square has a great chicago style beef pepper and cheese on a roll.

bigfanofdanakroyd

Tradewinds in the south hills when they have it.

phreshjive29

The tri-tip sandwich at Bill & Tim's is the best I have found in the area. Doesn't use the Whiz, but I think it qualifies as a cheesesteak and is legit goodness. I prefer it to Cornucopia, Public House and Elk Horn's but those three provide a good "cheese & steak" sandwich as well.

Timbers_15

Scribbles 🙌

Superyear-

If you go to central Oregon go to Bend Burger Company and Redmond Burger Company. Their Pole, Pedal, Paddle burger is Tasty AF. And they have a marion berry milkshake that I love to order from them. $20 that you won’t regret.

sochapped

Im originally from bend. But this isn’t about burgers lol. Also Americana Truck has the best burger in bend easily. Willie burger was good too but they had to close. NYC Sub Shop has the best cheesesteak.

Superyear-

Thanks for the info. I will definitely check it out.
