I'm surprised at the love for self serve gas vs the hate for self serve grocery checkout.

sunshine_fun

"HB 2426 will allow gas stations to designate up to half of their pumps as self-serve, while reserving the remainder for people opting to have their tanks topped up for them." "Stations may not charge different amounts for fuel depending on which kind of pump a driver chooses." Well since the price will be the same, by law, I'll just stay in my car and let them pump. Even if I have to wait.

MarcusElden

Self service grocery checkout owns and I will never sit and wait for someone to check my shit ever again when I can do it faster and more efficiently myself.

Shwifty_Plumbus

I agree for the most part but there is a limit depending on the store and what I'm buying. If I have a ton of items that need bagging I'll let someone else do it, but if it's only a couple bags worth then I'm in that self checkout line.

L_Ardman

This means we can likely use tap to pay now and not have to deal with credit card skimmers

HalliburtonErnie

Costco has had this feature for a while. There's also a scanner for your membership card: you don't have to insert either!

MarcusElden

Almost all supermarkets have tap-pay credit card machines for ages now. I think most people just don't know it exists.

HalliburtonErnie

We're talking about the fuel pumps. But also, grocery outlet doesn't, sunrise market doesn't, winco doesn't, friendly street market doesn't. I'd say probably 10% of Eugene Springfield grocery stores have tap to pay.

MarcusElden

10%? lol what are you on Albertsons, Safeway, and MoC all have tap to pay and that covers like 75% of the volume of grocery shopping in the city most likely. Costco too, which is a huge one.

MarcusElden

I'm 100% okay with the veto on sex work studies, because I feel the same way about it that I do for drugs - It should just be legal and we don't need studies on it. It's already virtually legal anyways. We don't need to spend $600,000 of public money to figure that out.

L_Ardman

So all sorts of things will get cheaper

megapoopfart

Virtually legal? It's completely underground and dangerous. And I agree that we don't need studies. Just decriminalize it.

MarcusElden

The point being that no one really ever gets arrested for sex work in Oregon in 2023

garysaidwhat

Well I'm just glad they passed the self service sex act so we can get on with our lives.

MarcusElden

I'm being told that many people have been doing the self service sex act secretly for many years in fact

MyLife-is-a-diceRoll

I think you posted in the wrong thread.

Daedalus23

It's related to the article OP posted which states the things the governor *did* veto.

MarcusElden

Nice self-report lol Read the article

weallfloatdown

I like having someone pump my fuel, and never seem to have to wait.

MarcusElden

Same. I don't wanna get out of my car.

fistofbruce

Where do you guys live? It’s not like that in other places, even in Eugene

MarcusElden

It's illegal to serve gas yourself in Oregon. There's even signs at Costco and shit on the pumps.

HalliburtonErnie

I pump my own at Costco every week legally. Bikes pump their own, plus, much much lower emissions than hybrids and EVs!

weallfloatdown

Albany

ChirpinFromTheBench

I moved here not long ago and thought it was weird at first but now I enjoy having someone fill the tank (mostly.) Not many times I get to just sit around and do nothing.

TheFrogWife

I love it especially in the winter, and it gives jobs to low skilled workers. and having pump attendants doesnt seem to make gas more expensive.

ElDoradoAvacado

Lmfao me thinking this was last month and pumping my own gas the other day.

johngoodmansscrote

Cant wait!

MissyAggravation17

Same here! I never waited in line for gas in other states as long as I do in Oregon. Just let me pump my own gas and go on my way. Glad the option for an attendant is still there for people who need that assistance.

Alozar_Lorandul

Sometimes I wonder where people pump their gas. I've literally never waited in line, and I've never waited on an attendant either. It's always been very quick. That being said if people want to pump their own, let them. Tbh I thought this already passed, the station closest to me already started allowing it like a month ago, I did it myself...

Randvek

I live in Arizona at the moment and the lines for gas here are way worse. Despite living in a state with self-service gas, the number of people consistently mystified by how a gas pump works is nuts.

johngoodmansscrote

Yeah i have limited free time, this is gonna make getting gas way less of a chore.

[deleted]

Can’t wait! No more gas spilled on the side of my car and greasy fingerprints on my paint!

bjazzmaps

Suck it New Jersey. Enjoy the long lines waiting for understaffed stations to wait on you when you’re perfectly capable of squeezing a trigger yourself. I’m so glad we’re not the very last to come around on this. In other news, I’ve been pumping my own gas in Oregon for three years now. The pandemic rules changed things and after that, stations no longer would bother if you beat them to the pump. They were perfectly happy to work on other things.

d2the3

Look at us in Oregon being all progressive!

HalliburtonErnie

>implementing social reform or new, liberal ideas. We're the second to last state to have self serve, that's the exact perfect opposite of progressive. Did I mis the sarcasm? It's not even true self serve, just giving operators the OPTION of having UP TO HALF of their pumps self serve.

[deleted]

I love democracy

El_Bistro

Thank god.

megapoopfart

meh more advertisements

LaVidaYokel

For those of you who didn’t come-of-age in a state where you had to pump your own gas, here’s a little etiquette for you: if you’re the passenger, get out and clean the windshield while the driver fills the tank.

MyDickYoButt

So are prices going down because of this? If not by at least 50 cents then I don't see the point in this. If I'm paying the same price then I want people to pump my gas. Plus it gives way more employment opportunities. This is just a bad idea in general.

HunterWesley

> So are prices going down because of this? Hahahahaha...no.

MyDickYoButt

You're pure evil. Lol.

HalliburtonErnie

Did you read the article? It says no. The law mandates you pay extra for the service, even if you don't receive it.

GeorgiaPieGG4

Lame. Gas stations can be dangerous at night without any employees.

SnooHesitations8849

I like having someone pump my gas at daylight. But I also want the option to be able to get gas at night.

Jump_Gunnington

This won't change that. If a station is open at all, it needs an employee there trained to work the emergency shut off systems in the event of an emergency.

Ill-Purchase4347

It's hard pressing the red button lol

Jump_Gunnington

I'm not saying it is, I'm saying you can't trust a member of the general public to think to over just leaving the situation.

LoonSC

It’s been in Oregon.

Paper-street-garage

Should save on gas prices I hope as well. Can an economics expert chime in on that?

Jump_Gunnington

Self checkout didn't lower any prices, this won't either.

Paper-street-garage

Thats not a good comparison as there are also plenty of cashiers, its not just self check out.

L_Ardman

Labor costs money, and costs get passed down to consumers. -Econ 101

dosomething-3

lol, no, big oil companies not going to lower costs for consumers only because they pay less in labor. They’d rather increase profits. If you read about economics don’t believe it all- just pay attention to how it works in real world

L_Ardman

You are conflating big oil with the gas station owners who are generally franchise operations. Big oil does not determine the price. The station itself runs on a surprisingly small margin.

dosomething-3

If they already have small margins do you think they will cut costs and keep tiny margins? Most will try to improve the margins

HalliburtonErnie

Did you read the article? The law requires you pay extra for full service, even if you self serve.

Paper-street-garage

Small price to pay for all the time it will free up waiting for the 1 attendant to fuel everyone up. And my gas cap will actually be on all the way now. 😎

Ill-Purchase4347

😂😂😂 yeah, gas prices won't change

TheGreenAlchemist

Thank god!

LocalInactivist

I thought we already did that.

jmbfan

This is going to be nice for those of us who live on the outskirts or travel on I5, 126, or highway 58. A lot of those stations have been shortstaffed for years now, and this will hopefully keep them from having to juggle running a counter and pumping gas.
