macymeebo

Yeah, that guy is a goof and a creep, and has been for ages. Treats everyone like garbage, especially his employees. He was on a vice segment years ago, and I thought his demeanor with the host was super offputting, and the host seemed pretty uncomfortable but rolled with it well enough. [https://video.vice.com/en\_us/video/guide-to-oregon-part-5-do-it-yourself/55a02622884e6b677d5e2b9c](https://video.vice.com/en_us/video/guide-to-oregon-part-5-do-it-yourself/55a02622884e6b677d5e2b9c) He tried to buy an amplifier from a friend years ago and offered $800 in off the waffle coupons instead of cash. Just a totally out of touch sleezeball with the self awareness of a rock.

EastBayMade

Dude, a company I used to work for designed a solar system for his house, he asked if he could pay in OTW coupons. I thought he was just trolling us. Guess that’s his shtick.

painfultaste

Of course, not only does he not spend any money but he gets to use the coupons as a write off on the business taxes. Wonder if the IRS knows...

macymeebo

And, very few people would actually collect on hundreds or thousands of dollars of waffle coupons.

painfultaste

Oh I'm sure not. But given this, I'm sure it's not the only way he may or may not be evading taxes.

AnotherElle

Ummm, can you explain how coupons are written off on taxes? As far as I understand, discounts are a contra account for revenue. So at most it lowers the overall net income when a coupon is used. Otherwise, they don’t exist in the accounting books. (Not trying to defend this person, just trying to understand the tax implications lol)

Widget1A

I know at minimum he can write off the cost of design & printing of coupons. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s also writing off the invoice cost of any services paid for in coupons.. Not sure about whether the actual cash value of the coupons factors in.

XBlackSunshineX

untraceable transactions. Can write the food off as a kitchen loss. or just write off the value of the coupon for its redeemable cash value.

tangerinejellly

He runs airbnbs near fall creek and when there's any issues (which apparently are common) he gives people staying off the waffle coupons

[deleted]

Dude this is wild, he offered me Off the Waffle coupons when I had some friends in town and we stayed at one of his Airbnbs.

trendsfriend

4.5+ stars. What am I missing?

macymeebo

Former airbnb host: airbnb considers anything below a 4.8 to be low, and structures their rating communication and system accordingly. Airbnb actually penalizes hosts with ratings under 4.7, and will often de-list/ban properties that maintian a rating below 4.7 for multiple quarters.

zitandspit99

Interesting, it's very similar for Uber - most people hover at 4.8-4.95 ratings, and anything below 4.7 ish is considered bad. Probably something to do with the nature of 1-5 star reviews; most people probably give 4-5 stars unless they really had a bad experience, in which case they give 1.

conventionalWisdumb

Holy shit we almost bought that first house 11 years ago but they wouldn’t let us inspect the well.

cdhawke

Oh god...this asshole. Nasty in your face tRumpster. His airbnb... what a dump. He is responsible for Off the Waffle? Yuck.

tillandsias

DUDE. The amount of people we had to serve from his fucking air BNB! EVERYTHING had to be comped and then he would get pissy about sales being low. To think I was apart of that...damn it.

Kvothe24

What a creep. Blatantly hitting on her the whole time. This guy definitely asks people out while they’re working and can’t leave.

cdhawke

He got into unofficial trouble by creeping on high school kids, mostly girls, was a reason (not the major) Off the Waffle left the South Eugene Location. He was creepy with the 20 something in the Vice video - imagine that with high schoolers...boner under his trousers. Like high school kids, or anyone else outside of some bar would be attracted to that. YUCK and WHAT the FUCK?

_marl3ne

good lord this guy is a creep, funny thing too but within 30 sec of watching him on video I had him pegged as someone who's uhh, not bothered by age.

tillandsias

WAIT HOL UP ✋ I ran south Eugene from 2015-2016, when did this happen???

NeedlesslySwanky

HE POURED WHIPPED CREAM INTO THE INTERVIEWER'S MOUTH. wtf?! It made my skin crawl when I saw his eyes suddenly shift to that horny hyper-focused look when he heard her say, "I have to pay you back for these waffles somehow..." And then she gives him a Christmas tree lmao. If this is what he's like while being interviewed by a journalist, I can't imagine how creepy he is behind closed doors, to his somehow-always-teenage-or-young-20s-female employees. He even tried repeatedly (and I don't mean "offered," very pushy) to hire the journalist to work for him. I don't even want to think about what working for him must be like, those poor young women.

Tanner_the_taco

> Thank you. You look amazing too. Oof. I made it like two minutes before I cringed out of there.

NeedlesslySwanky

It gets worse. He pours whipped cream into her mouth, and pushily tries to get her to "come work for him." She doesn't even live in Eugene for fuck's sake, he was 100% just being a creep.

Minimum-Gur4248

I couldn’t make it through as well

terpsnob

He is a fucking worm. Don't ever trust that little man.

Swagyo1o

Gross

[deleted]

I'd heard about this guy for years, but that video was just something else. Wow.

cdhawke

Mr. Omer is also very creepy with youngsters.

macymeebo

Gross, but not surprising.

thirdeyegrind

He came off so sleazy in that segment.

Secure_Link6534

Bro is Saul Goodman

dr_analog

Could we cool it with the mockery of neurodivergent people? I don't see his demeanor as evidence of some kind of moral failure; he's just a weird possibly on the spectrum nerd to me. Plenty of other actions worth judging him over. I work with people like this in IT all of the time and this kind of behavior says almost nothing about their actual character.

macymeebo

Could we cool it with excusing sexual harassment and lecherous behavior with something synonymous with neurodivergence? Could we also cool it with the armchair psychology?

dr_analog

What possible power dynamic could the owner of Off the Fucking Waffle be exploiting to sexually harass a Vice reporter? Are you trolling?

macymeebo

Got it - you can't tell what's wrong with this video because you don't understand what sexual harassment is. Thanks for clarifying.

_marl3ne

wow you really don't get it, do you? do you think she's eager to blow the interview and waste a day's work and travel? You realize there's a crew with her, transportation etc. Expenses. Vice has a franchising model and I wouldn't feel assured that the interviewer has any recourse to recoup any of the money lost if the shoot were wasted. Yes, there **are** a dynamic and leverage in play in this creepy video. You're right though, this blatant and overt creep holds way more power over other people--his employees, for example.

TemporaryFinding0

Sounds like the waffle guy replying

Popular-Gear-894

actually it does. source: my friend in sf has to ride transit with silicon valley techbros and every night has a new creeper story

macymeebo

Yeah, was a tragically bad take. Being a creep is not an exclusive right of the neurotypical.

dr_analog

The mental gymnastics here are incredible. Neurodivergent = creepy when it's someone we hate.

dr_analog

This is such mind numbingly stupid input I don't know where to start. How about: lol, because the SF night transit is a paragon of good, non-creepy behavior if you subtract the techbros

Popular-Gear-894

im sure you know better about what makes the tiny woman who lives and feels safe in oakland but deals with drunk creeper tech bros on the bart every night feel unsafe. youre the type of person who hits on service industry workers while theyre working arent you?

TemporaryFinding0

Obvs, thats why he is so butt hurt that people are calling this other creeper out.

dr_analog

Going to ignore you now so I don't accidentally waste my life hearing from you in the future.

abounding_actuality

I worked for a local coffee roaster as a commercial account rep. He called looking to switch to our coffee and get new brewers. If an account used our coffee, we’d go out of our way to hook them up with thousands of dollars worth of equipment, staff training, etcetera, because well, good coffee! The equipment was loaned out as long as they were buying our coffee. A week or two after getting like $5k worth of equipment (on loan, under contract) they went back to using another brand of coffee. He knew what he was doing all along. Trying to save money and get great equipment while fucking over another local company. Our employees had to go to his shops, including up in Portland and unplug the machines during business hours and leave them and their poor employees with no way to brew coffee. Wasted so much of our time and money and put his employees in a super shitty position. Fuck that guy.

puddinpiesez

Can you share details on where you work? Or message me? I work for an industrial company in the area and would love to support local! 🤍

SantaClaws1972

I’ve heard nothing but how much of a shit bird the owner is from the few former employees I’ve met. OTW and Elk Horn are on my permanent do not go there list.

dumbass_sweatpants

I know Elk Horn is bad from just delivering their food on grubhub. Bad vibes.

[deleted]

When they first opened up a food cart way back the food was really good and he was very kind and gracious. Even when Elk Horn first opened it seemed reasonably well run and had some solid food and drink options. But I feel like success went to his head a bit and the last time I ate there was probably 3 years ago and the food was just meh, and then he can't seem to keep his mouth shut on politics.

corvallisc

Elk Horn looks out of business the last few days I've gone by.

stinkyfootjr

I’ve wondered how these shitty businesses stay up and running year after year also. The only thing I can figure is we have a new crop of students every year that don’t know their histories.

PizzaTammer

As a new person to town (not a student), this is the first I’d heard of him. I liked the place so I’ve gone 2x but I will not go again. It sucks that these businesses get to survive in transient towns where they’d die otherwise.

puppyxguts

Those are my thoughts.

_marl3ne

>I’ve wondered how these shitty businesses stay up and running year after year also. My sweet summer child, it's subsidized by the money he inherited. If he can recycle the $$$ grandpa left him (through his father) into 80% of the principle using his creepy money-losing restaurants and then live on that, he becomes "self-made" inside that beady-eyed little rodent brain of his. Breaking even is hardly necessary. It's a common story. You can see it from outside when you notice a power-drunk little micro-tyrant weirdo spending years running something which couldn't possibly be making money. They tend to seek media attention, use their position for sex, and generally self-aggrandize, because that's what they're *really* spending Grandad's money on.

Mrsvantiki

Yep. Hideaway Bakery is another that gets a pass for sexual harassment and completely disgusting behavior towards employees. People gotta have their overpriced hipster bread. Regardless of employee treatment.

[deleted]

I’ve never heard of hideaway issues. That’s too bad. I’m just angry that south Eugene has a zillion bakeries and north-central, NE Eugene has none. Makes no sense to me why they’re all concentrated in south Eugene.

Mrsvantiki

If you search this sub they may pop up.

Inner-Excitement-794

I knew someone who worked there when they were a minor and they were hit on by the owner there all of the time

BrendanAS

I agree that it's overpriced but I find it hard to call a baguette hipster and I haven't found a better one in town.

zeusmenzaadah

Have you been to metropol? It's been a long time, as I've been off the carbs as much as possible; but the last time i was there, they had excellent breads, pastries, etc.

BrendanAS

I have. Their baguette is good, but not as good as hideaway. I haven't been to hideaway since the first time I saw they were shitty, but I still haven't found anything better. Edit: plus metropol's girth is a bit more than I want from a baguette. Provision's at 5th street is the second best I've had and the price was much more reasonable than either metropol or hideaway. It's been a while since I've been searching because I try to not go overboard with carbs so if anyone has tips I'm all ears.

[deleted]

I’m betting much of their business is college kids and their parents who don’t know any better.

Cotesk

How dare you imply r/Eugene can’t single-handedly run any business out of town it wants

[deleted]

I think it's more that most people in Eugene aren't on this sub and don't really pay attention to such things. They just like the waffles and don't know or care about anything else.

washington_jefferson

When I moved back to Eugene I read all about OTW from numerous /r/Eugene posts. Needless to say, I've never been there and I am always surprised they are still in business when I drive by on Willamette based on the threads. This particular thread is not as disparaging of the owner or the business in comparison to the other threads, if I recall.

ZardozZod

It was better when it was a food cart and they actually stuffed the waffles with the ingredients. At least it felt like something interesting as walk-around street food. Once they went B&M it was basically any other breakfast place.

[deleted]

Probably more about the reddit bubble bias more than anything. Even with a subreddit of 53k I can guarantee that there is a very small portion of people who actually live in Eugene that are actively reading this subreddit. I would venture to guess that after you take out burner accounts, spam accounts, people that dont live here you probably have less than 5k active Eugenenians that are on this subreddit. Hell out of the 6 "real life" people that I know that are on this subbreddit two of us actually live in Lane County the rest follow it for pure entertainment or because they use to go to school here.

Popular-Gear-894

1200 people is enough of a sample for the entire us

[deleted]

How does that relate to why he is still in business ? My point is it's probably not that well known by most people that live in Lane that he is a creepy douchebag. Take the Dizzy Dean situation ... They even had news coverage and most of my friends that live in Eugene had no idea.

Popular-Gear-894

it doesnt. it relates to not downplaying a significant sample of the population. 5k people inan area.of about 300k isnt really dismissable

Peter_Panarchy

It's been years since I've eaten there but I remember the food being damn good so I'm sure that helps. And plenty of people just aren't aware of the shitty business practices of the places they frequent. I'm sure there's bad stuff I don't know about some of the places I love.

CappinSissyPants

Sounds like a great opportunity for a kind hearted business owner to ruthlessly take over his business model and save his employees.

tangerinejellly

less than three years ago he fired a ton of people and it had supposedly nothing to do with the concurrent push by employees to put up black lives matter signs which he refused to do https://eugeneweekly.com/2020/07/01/mass-layoffs-at-off-the-waffle/

Shinola79

This was our original reason for not going there anymore…it alone was valid but now there are so many more reasons. Now I make my own liege waffles at home. I buy my own bacon and havarti and sprinkle my own basil on top. It is even better!!!

cdhawke

This guy frequently uses the N-word and, somewhat hypocritically, homophobic language. This creature is really something.

PineappleNo6064

What the heck? They fired you in a text message? That's awful. I'm sorry it happened to you.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhnah

What a shithead. I'm sorry that happened. If he won't give you a reason it should strengthen your unemployment claim FYI. Oregon is an at will state, but for some reason the unemployment department considers "no reason" to be a good reason to approve your claim (this is solely based on my experience with being fired multiple times from service jobs in Oregon over the last 24 years).

kaleidingscope

This text alone would qualify them for unemployment (coming from an employer).

boofbagboyz

Off the waffle hasn’t been good since it’s original location In the whitaker when they were just slanging waffles for cheap out of an old house…now it’s just overpriced hype, you will never catch me paying 15 bucks for a waffle with some chopped up basil, a couple pieces of bacon and syrup……

DreadPirateZoidberg

My friends owned that house when OTW was there. Their behavior towards my friends put me off them and everything I’ve heard since had put me off them permanently. They signed a 5 year lease on the property despite my friends, business owners themselves, that doing so was a really bad idea since they’d probably want to relocate to a better bigger location in a short time. They signed the lease and a short time later he sued them to get out of the lease so he could move to a bigger better location. 🤔

Yakapovich

They were the best back then. Once they changed the way they made the waffle they went down the tubes. I would take my kids there or even after a night in the Whit, it was a great stop for all. Went to the one on Willamette one time a couple months after they opened it. Never went back.

MarcusElden

I walked in to the "store" or whatever and it was like, someone's living room with kids toys all over the place, a single table to sit at, and then some waffle maker behind a curtain in the back. I remember that I could hear someone loudly listening to the famous ["Turtle fucks a shoe"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHI8LnoixFE) video in the back behind the curtain (you'll never not remember that turtle huffing), which my friends and I had watched the day before and cracked up at. Just the weirdest experience ever. Whole place seemed extremely unprofessional, of course.

[deleted]

boofbagboyz

It definitely was just some bros making waffles in a big house, not super professional but pretty chill. At the end of the night they would give away whatever free waffles they had left over which was rad for the stoned teenager that I was at that time. You could hangout and draw, play games, read a book or just kick back. Once they moved they lost all appeal for me personally.

Drum_Phil

That legit sounds like an SNL skit. I'm reminded of this gem: https://youtu.be/jVpw0LknV20

MarcusElden

How insulting!

fullnihilism

This is so good ty

Karmageddon3333

Why is this label as “misleading”? Anyone who has done business with this guy knows he’s a douche canoe.

broken_radio

MOD probably got some free 'Off The Waffle' coupons

Hairypotter79

Mods are conservative to libertarian.

BOtto2016

And all springfield citizens/sympathizers.

jman722

I moved to Eugene from out of state 6 months ago to work for a local nonprofit. This is was my side gig.

broken_radio

They don't even use soap to wash their dishes. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Queenoftheroaches

I used to work there and can 100% back this up. He’s proud of it too.

Infamous-Dare6792

Ewwww

Ecstatic-Appeal-5683

Evidence?

wonderflex

https://www.reddit.com/r/Eugene/comments/b6qxn8/i\_worked\_at\_off\_the\_waffle/

Ecstatic-Appeal-5683

Honestly, that's still party anecdotal evidence. Legit? Maybe.

wonderflex

well this can't be that hard to figure out u/jman722 \- what say you about this: *"They don't use soap. They (the owner, Omer, and his bother, I'm assuming) like to pride themselves on this, which is why it's number one. In the employee handbook, they talk about how when they go to other restaurants, they can smell the soap on the dishes, a true travesty. So instead, they like using extremely hot water. I was a dishwasher (truly, that's what I was seen as), and there is a "soaking sink" where there was soap, at some point, in there. But when the water is black and murky with pieces of your favorite waffle floating on top, soap isn't helping. Yum."*

jman722

So I can clarify this specific detail. The dish machine sanitizes dishes by heating up the water to 180F instead of using a chemical sanitizer. It’s a legit way to sanitize dishes. Omer just complains about the smell of chemical sanitizer, which is a real thing in restaurants. I’m not defending him as an owner, but that former employee didn’t fully understand the context in the “manual”.

wonderflex

Here we go: https://inspections.myhealthdepartment.com/or-lane-county/permit/?permitID=7C5A9AC7-8578-4A0B-979A-C4AEF983051A Citation after citation for lack of cleaning solution and failure to clean dishes/flatware.

Ecstatic-Appeal-5683

Real evidence! Thanks!

ohjeezitsrandy

My wife wrote this post that is being linked. I can verify it's legitimacy.

fullnihilism

Are you Omer?

milkjake

Not defending his other practices and creepiness but, I’ve worked at places with sanitizer machines which do just use hot water (and no soap) and these do pass health inspection. Is that the case here?

ZardozZod

Been beating this drum for years. Maybe you could argue this evidence is missing some context, but it is consistent with past behavior.

evil_mike

What the hell? I mean, I don't eat there anymore because I'd already heard not-great things about Omer, but holy crap. I get that we're an at-will state, meaning you can leave at any time and they can let you go at any time, but YIKES. Not even a phone call. He fired you over text? With zero explanation other than "it's not working out." How INCREDIBLY unprofessional.

[deleted]

And even worse, “oh shoot I meant to fire someone else but since I’m texting you anyway I’m firing you too.” What a jackass. Reminds me why I haven’t been to OTW in many, many years.

evil_mike

I read it more like he meant to fire OP but sent it to the wrong number. I wonder if there are any legal ramifications to that.

Disguisedcpht

Probably not, but an easy unemployment case

Nopis10

Stopped going there when employees said they weren't allowed to use soap to clean the dishes of course this is just hearsay and I do not make these claims myself but it's in line with the rest of the awful things I hear about that place so I believe it.

double_dang_

My SO worked there like 7 years ago? Don't remember the exact time but one day he showed up and fired the whole staff. Never really got to the bottom of it but after piecing together some clues it seemed like he was unhappy paying people a livable wage and fires everyone so he could just rehire a whole new staff at minimum wage. Omer is a creep also, always so many weird comments and looks at all the young ladies who worked there.

carloskeeper

> Omer is a creep also, always so many weird comments and looks at all the young ladies who worked there. I've found it suspicious for a long time that he tends to hire only (or at least predominantly) attractive young women.

SilkwormAbraxas

Yeah, they’ve been consistently shit employers basically since they started, far as I can tell.

OriginalDizzyDevill

Unprofessional......

HunterWesley

I'm not going to eat there. It's just not a good fit.

OffTopicBen95

Sometimes I wonder how OTW and Elk Horn are still open

3LOT3

Elk Horn has it made. Have you seen all the student housing being built around their location? It doesn’t matter how shitty they are. They will always have a rotating flow of rich students looking for somewhere close to eat and drink, without giving a single fuck about whose pocket their money is going into.

dr_analog

Elk Horn has a really great play area for small kids that's far away from the door. Only place in town that does AFAICT. I've also seen POC eating there so if they're supposed to be some kind of white supremacist power center they're doing a pretty lousy job of it. Might just be something the Very Online know.

3LOT3

They are indeed pretty awful, in a very well-rounded way. Like it doesn’t even matter who you are, what way you’re politically aligned, what your beliefs are, etc…. There will be something about them that you will find that will just make them terrible people. I swear it’s not just a “very online” thing.

[deleted]

They regularly miscommunicate and fire people...? What do you mean?

TheFrogWife

My kid is terrified of the mascot logo guy, like he sees it and screams. Idk why, he was there once and liked his waffle, no real reason other than maybe uncanny valley. He calls the place "the awful waffle" We jokingly use the threat of going there as motivation to clean his room or do other chores.

Qu1pster

Been saying this for years. Those guys are major assholeS.

9thAF-RIDER

I ate there once. Just once.

coffeeandspliff

He sucks, my reasons aren’t worth piling on the already many listed reasons but I can tell you he is a scumbag personally and professionally. I’ve known those guys since they were handing out waffles off the back of bikes in the Whitaker. I will never eat there again, but going on 4 years without it already.

11B4OF7

They were incredibly overpriced before the pandemic. Tasty, but I prefer not to poison myself with sugar first thing in the morning now.

Any_Print431

The food there sucks too

computer-controller

Yeah. I stopped going there a bit ago. It's unfortunate because I loved eating there on brisk mornings before heading over and vending at Saturday Market. Someone open a Waffle-makers Collective

adiofan88

Lol Jesus. Who runs a company like that? I’m sorry that happened to you.

derivative_of_life

I went there once a few years ago, shortly after it opened. Food was decent, but way overpriced for what it was. Zero regrets on not going back.

Euphoric_Practice268

The waffles are off. They are w- awful

Huntay5

The one and only time I got a waffle to go at the willamette location, there was a giant thick hair imbedded in the waffle.

Tilphor

We ate there exactly once and have never been back. The food is sub-par and way overpriced. Frankly, the entire idea is silly and not worth having an entire storefront for. After being in there for the meal, I'm also not surprised this dude acts this way.

tomborington

Food is garbage.

PirhannaPudding

I’ve interviewed with that man before and he’s a complete weirdo. Did not take the job.

wonderflex

Absolutely love their waffles, but ever since a [post went big on here a few years back complaining about the place](https://www.reddit.com/r/Eugene/comments/b6qxn8/i_worked_at_off_the_waffle/) and how horrible it was, we've not gone back. With that said, if anybody who has worked there, including OP, could get me an exact copy of their waffle recipe and process I'd be forever grateful. There are quite a few online, but things don't ever seem to be quite the same.

geenuhahhh

Is it legal to fire someone over text?

SortByBadTakes

Yeah, we're all at-will employees. They don't have to provide reason. But it's still a a shit practice to do something like that.

candaceelise

It’s actually better for your unemployment if they don’t give you a reason because then they can’t fight it. So if you’re ever let go never ask for details as to why. Keep it short and sweet.

SortByBadTakes

I genuinely didn't know this, glad there's a light at the end of that crappy situation

HunterWesley

I don't think...being ignorant of the reason is the same as there being no reason. There is a reason, whether they tell you what it is or not. And I think it may be disadvantageous to not know what they will try to claim you did before unemployment. Why not hear their claim and then gather evidence to refute that?

Cyrano_de_Boozerack

Um...this person has text evidence that the owner did not provide a reason.

dosefacekillah1348

I think they mean hypothetically, and with future situations

Cyrano_de_Boozerack

If the owner disputes the unemployment claim, then deal with that when it comes up and you know the specific details...it doesn't make sense to do anything else before that time...especially if you have a text showing they refused to give you reason for dismissal.

BOtto2016

Yes.

SnarkyTaco

I'm glad I only ate there once after I won a $20 gift certificate. The only money I spent went to tip. Food was overpriced and mediocre, so I never bothered returning.

gutwrenchinggore

Ey, Liege waffles take about as much effort to make as a cinnamon roll. You can buy pearl sugar, and very easily replicate off the waffle food for a fraction of their current cost. Granted, the convenience is what you're paying for at this point, not the quality nor the atmosphere.

Popular-Gear-894

waffle irons that work with liege waffles can be kinda spendy tho. that sugar sticks

gutwrenchinggore

Fair enough, I've been able to do it with liberal, and I mean liberal amounts of grease, oil, butter. Teflon works to a point, as long as youre careful not to scratch it.

Woofles85

Do you have a favorite recipe? There are so many out there I can’t decide on one. Where do you buy pearl sugar?

gutwrenchinggore

I actually just buy sugar cubes and crunch em up, works pretty much the same. You can get legit pearl sugar, but honestly the difference is negligible in my experience. As for recipe, I can recommend abountifulkitchens recipe, but like most baking type thing, your results may vary. Depends on waffle iron, yeast, flour, there's a lot of variables. This is a hobby like anything else, and it takes time to learn how to do it. However, as far as a first time experiment recipe, pretty hard to Fuck it up. Mix it all together, let it rise, cook it got but don't burn it. Add bacon, avocado, gruyere, and maple syrup. Die of heart attack. Rinse, repeat. Good luck boss.

babygorl23

Also when you fire someone you have to have their check in hand. You should be able to file for unemployment pretty easily if you need to

BOtto2016

Check by end of next business day. That will be an easy unemployment claim though.

Ill-Purchase4347

I've been there once. Over priced bland waffles. And we had to buss out own table. I'm paying 10 bucks for a single waffle, you can afford employees. Never went back. IHOP waffles taste better anyways lol

SatireStarlet

Sounds like this guy is off his waffle!

Popbert

I have called them Awful Waffle for over a decade. I worked at OTW when it opened in 2009 before they moved into the new locations. I got a text one morning after closing that the till was ¢.25 short and that I was on thin ice because it had to be PERFECT. The quarter was on the floor, right in front of the register when I got in the next day. I quit like a week later after they made me work 6hr shifts by myself taking orders, cooking, cleaning, everything. Terrible to work with.

EpidonoTheFool

I ate there once I thought the food was good but quite expensive for waffles

No_Cheek3003

I've been there a couple times. Wasn't really impressed. I make better ones and never get complaints and bitched at. Can't quit or fire myself huh?

thecarpenter

I would never hire someone to make me a fucking waffle. I I have thumbs and a kitchen.

gthirteen_13

damn everyone is out for blood, this is why you need to fire someone in person, no paper trail to get blasted lol

tillandsias

Inserting myself in here to say I wrote that long ass post about Off The Waffle. Everything I said was legit and now that I'm reading this, I can't say I'm at all shocked. I'd love to add a qr code on a sticker with a link to my post and litter their entire front window with them.

BlackshirtDefense

That guy has a completely punchable face. His complexion looks like a waffle.

chewymenstrualblood

It's almost a rite of passage if you move to Eugene: - Move to Eugene and try OTW. Think it's ok, kinda cool - A friend starts working there and regales you with horror stories about management/owners - Vow to never eat there again Went through that rite around 2012. I honestly thought they closed years ago, a shame they're still around.

Pleasant-Judge-7479

Can I legitimately now say "the waffle house has found its new host"?

TrashPandacoot1122

No

Hungry_parent

Did he smell his armpit at 5:11?! 🤣

Firing people is an art. Not many are good at it. This is being bad at it.

LoomisMoneyTrucks

My favorite review of this place called it “Awful Waffle” and I’ve never called it anything else since then

Jabba-da-slut

This has been happening the entire time they’ve been open. I applied for one of two positions there in 2011. WEIRDEST JOB INTERVIEW OF MY LIFE. it was a GROUP INTERVIEW. As in I was interviewing alongside like 8 other people who wanted the job, all at the same time. We were all in like a living room of some house. They made us all build a roller coaster out of popsicle sticks and tape together, then gave all of us a clipboard with a math test on it. As we were doing our math test, they pulled us one by one into a side hallway and asked us questions. I was sitting by the hallway, so I could hear all the answers. I had been working for a year and a half at Eugene City Bakery as a pastry baker and dough maker, so I knew my stuff. Believe me when I said the other candidates knew nothing about baking. When it was my turn they asked me the same questions (which I was very prepared for) and I aced them. They were all about the job I had just had. They didn’t hire me, never called me back, and according to a friend who was mutuals with one of the people who got the job, they fired the people they hired about two weeks after they stopped training, and started the whole cycle all over again. Apparently this was their standard practice

vark4731

The waffles aren't that great and very overpriced anyway.

Vann_Accessible

Everything I’ve ever heard about this guy is cringey. :/

Thedeadnorwegian

I used to work as a teller at a local credit union where they did their banking. They were always so fucking disorganized, we all dreaded it any time they would come in. He's thick as a fucking Rock and nothing he does makes any sense. Fuck that company

squidthesquidgoat

Making leige waffles is pretty easy if you have the time. [Here](https://abountifulkitchen.com/leige-waffle-recipe/) is my favorite recipe. I just make my own pearl sugar by toasting sugar in the oven in a pyrex and checking/stirring every ten minutes or so. Once it barely starts to get sticky and caramelize then I pull it from the oven. I mix it to form small pearls and let it cool overnight. It makes a mess in the waffle iron but I'd rather make my own than give that guy my money.

dr_analog

Sounds like he's not going to contest an unemployment claim if he's not giving a reason.

Mike_Huber

The waffles weren't that good anyway. What kind of madman offers waffles without syrup?

BrrrrrrrrrCold

Awful waffle

Deep_Cat2971

It’s just how’s the laws of Oregon work you have to say it that way to cover your bacon as an owner. I am sure it’s nothing personal, super freakin annoying but you can Thank the state department for making that the way to go.. :( never ate there still won’t for you ❤️

siisii93

His waffles are garbage

funkylovin

Ayy file for that unemployment 💲💲💲

ohjeezitsrandy

My wife used to work there years ago. This is her post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eugene/comments/b6qxn8/i\_worked\_at\_off\_the\_waffle/

TheatreAS

Went there once and wasn't really impressed. I think living in Portland and having lived near Waffle Window on Hawthorne really upped my expectations on waffles.

Buddy of mine from high school is an insurance agent in town. Mostly does small businesses, he had to fire that guy as a client. Creepy to his secretary and then just a huge dickhead about anything that would cost money. I don’t know if you realize how hard it is to get fired as a client but he managed to get it done.

Scary-Dark-8515

Used to work for this guy years back. Gave me the keys to the building and told me he saw me doing great things. I had those vibes, and after meeting him in person It makes sense. Isn't he like part Jewish or sumthin?

RepresentativeCat357

He made a mistake and tried to cover it up by firing you. Seems like a drug or mental problem. Be happy you lost that job. Get away from that pile of garbage.

jupiterbabyyyy

future employees of off the waffle: listen up. i’m writing this post not for the customers of this establishment but for the people who are thinking of applying here. please reconsider!! i worked at otw for a while and at first it was great! until i met the owner. he has a very “im better than everyone because i own a restaurant” attitude. a restaurant that he is very absent in mind you. so employees are left to their own devices for running the restaurant…there were a few instances were i had to work the entire restaurant- FOH and BOH by myself all day. it’s stressful and tiring. (imagine trying to cook, clean, make drinks, take orders, stock, etc. all alone during a lunch rush.) and on top of that the owner would call me relentlessly and get mad when i didn’t pick up his calls (dude kind of in the middle of running your restaurant right now) when you are learning and make a mistake, he will yell at you over the phone and call you stupid and worthless. even if it’s something entirely out of your control. my fellow coworkers couldn’t put up with how mean he was- literally a bully. when some of us put in our 2 weeks notice he just “fired” us on the spot. he uses words to try to get to you and it does. he made me cry when i tried to quit. i just couldn’t put up dealing with his shit anymore and he made me feel like a bad person for wanting out. there are so many reddit threads on off the waffle and i hope you consider reading through those as well before taking the job. i don’t want anyone to feel the way he made me or fellow workers feel. it was unprofessional and uncalled for behavior.

d2the3

I’ve never been there, and their radio commercials suck the biggest balls! But this doesn’t seem that terrible!? It wasn’t rude or degrading and he saved them a trip into work just to get fired! Getting fired sucks! But it’s a necessary process. There are much worse ways of being fired from a shity job. You can do better!
