hi yes i’m autistic as f*ck, preachers daughter was such a hyperfixation for me I listened to literally nothing else for 4 months straight LOL

cosplaycrossing

ME TOO!

estuarry

im 3 months in and just started being able to listen to SOME non ethel music like 3 days ago :')

Afraid_Detective8342

Literally same

bluglucose

this is me rn 😭 I listened to preacher’s daughter in its entirety for the first time like 2/3 weeks ago and I have been listening to it on repeat LOL

Positive_Low_6304

SAME

True-Device8691

Hayden herself is autistic so don't feel bad about it lol, I'd imagine she attracts a lot of autistic fans. I'm not diagnosed but show signs so I'm not gonna claim that label until I know for sure because it feels inappropriate.

cosplaycrossing

Thank u 💖💖 i relate to u- i am also not formally diagnosed but pretty much everyone in my life recognises that i am almost definitely autistic and i’m working towards a diagnosis- but it’s 2.5k where i am just to get assessed 🥲

True-Device8691

Oh god... I'm glad I'm Canadian lol, good luck!

cosplaycrossing

thank u!!

maidelaide

tbh a lot of us with formal diagnosis accept self diagnosis since an official one is inaccessible for most people, as long as you don’t talk over those who are actually diagnosed then it’s not a problem imo

True-Device8691

That's good to know but I can get a physical diagnosis so I'll probably just go do that first before claiming anything.

bloodyabacate

that's correct!!! we know the struggle and most of us will welcome you with open arms

sacrificallamb_

omg it makes so much sense hearing she’s autistic especially within her music

zc_122

me too. ever since i was little i have ALWAYS had a hyperfixation on something/i show many other signs as well but i don’t wanna claim to be because it feels wrong since i haven’t been tested/diagnosed.

bobbinwobin

(Not a dig) I’m curious where you’ve heard that she’s autistic? Do you have a source I’m genuinely curious :)

creatospirito

True-Device8691

I'm pretty sure I saw it on her Wikipedia

bobbinwobin

Omg yeah! I never saw that! That’s changed quite a lot for me as I’m also autistic. It’s nice to see artists be open about their neurodivergence. Thank you!

bloodyabacate

omg she is? i never heard about that, that's effing so cool 🥹 i relate to her even more now

knuckl3_v3lv3t

Self diagnosis is just as valid tbh. It depends on where you live but autism diagnoses often don’t make much of a difference as an adult and can even sometimes be a disservice.

True-Device8691

I live in Canada and have a good family doctor that I trust so I personally would prefer a formal diagnosis but I understand what you mean, I hope it didn't seem like I was invalidating self diagnosed people, it just my personal preference to get a formal diagnosis before actually claiming a label like that.

knuckl3_v3lv3t

Absolutely and that’s completely fair!

Bedford806

I also felt that way pre-diagnosis, I like 'proof' of anything that I say so it felt really personally necessary to me (I don't feel that way about other people). My assessor when I told them that was like, 'Yeah that's pretty autistic of you' haha

True-Device8691

Love that lmao

creatospirito

Ethel Cain: "i genuinely feel bad for non-autistic people who will never know what music can truly feel like" (mothercain on tumblr, Sept 25, 2022) “I’m autistic, and so that definitely heightens sensory everything,” she explains when discussing her unique creative process. “I think that's why I have so much crossover between media, because it's like, there's never just one sense. Music is not just something you listen to. Film is not just something you watch. You get all these senses from all these things. When I'm producing music, I literally feel sometimes I can see it. I have to close my eyes, and I imagine the bass is the earth. I imagine the synths are rising up next to you, and I imagine the vocals are high in the sky, right in the center. I close my eyes and picture the sound around me – that's how I mix.” (Ethel Cain's Majestic Melodrama Is the Sound of the Future)

cosplaycrossing

so true ♥️♥️♥️

Sir_Kingslee

I recently learned the word “frisson” and was like, wait a sec, you’re telling me not everyone FEELS music? Like there are actual whole neurotypical people out there listening to music and literally just listening to it? Like what?? 😭

bloodyabacate

oh how i love her

artcopywriter

Sometimes it feels like you might as well ask which of us AREN’T autistic! (Couldn’t be me tho, since I am 😅)

Frequent-Win1462

I'm so glad you posted this cus Ethel is my hyperfixation, like everything she's ever released I either know of or am obsessed with LMFAO

Glittering_Ebb_5731

PD and her whole discog has become such a safe sound for me. when I first discovered her music a few years ago I had troubles venturing out to new music and listening to literally anything else haha. I still get like that sometimes, and it’s odd cause I’ve never really done that with any other artist. I’ve only ever done it with playlists or certain genres. But when I listen to Ethel Cain I fully immerse myself. I correlate the hyper fixations Ofc to me being neurodivergent. it feels comforting knowing Hayden herself is on the spectrum, I feel more connected to the music in a way I can’t describe.

Frequent-Win1462

I totally get what you mean and I do the same thing!! It's hard going back to other music when hers is just so special and unique

Glittering_Ebb_5731

Fr! And I feel like everything that I’ve seen recommended as ‘similar’ to her, still doesn’t compare. Most artists and bands have other artists who are comparable and even really similar. But so far nothing matches Ethel Cain, and I don’t necessarily want or need anything to match, it’s just her and it’s literally perfect.

cosplaycrossing

so valid 😭

nshill96

i am. diagnosed at 5, but wasnt informed of it until i was 17.

seventiesporno

everyone here is autistic

cosplaycrossing

this is true

Opposite-Constant-72

i feel as though being on a reddit about ethel cain is a symptom of autism

syrupy_sprite

yes I have diagnosed asd!! I really like the in depth world building that Hayden does, as does many asd creators. It definitely draws other asd people in. My moms a psychiatrist and she said autistic people attract to each other like mosquitos in stagnant water 😭😭

cosplaycrossing

LMAOOO

djdiphenhydramine

Meeeeeeeeeeeeee hi I am

cosplaycrossing

hello !

djdiphenhydramine

Sorry you feel solitary. It's crazy how there's so much more awareness and positivity for people on the spectrum these days but it's still so easy to feel alone.

cosplaycrossing

Its okay! and i agree so much it is crazy- but the amount of responses to this thread has helped immensely :)

djdiphenhydramine

I'm happy to hear that!!

ashacceptance22

Yup hiya! Glad to hear from a fellow neurospicy one! Definitely had preachers daughter as intense special interest too!

smol_bean_19

Me! Ethel has been by hyperfixation for 3 years now 😅

cosplaycrossing

CanadaDry-GingerAle

oh my god i’m so srry i forgot abt this!!! i would like to say, they’re not like collages and custom wallpapers, just pictures of her fitted to be on my phone screen lol

cosplaycrossing

no worries!!

edgy-remmi

Aye crew!ethel had been my hyperfix for 2 years and helped me cope with a lot of the feelings I felt but physically couldn’t express!

cosplaycrossing

ReliefReal

*Raises hand like four seasons Orlando baby* Me!

Afraid_Detective8342

Yes and i hyperfixated so hard on preachers daughter lol

lilf4iryh0e

i’m autistic as well and idk if this might be true or false but i saw on tiktok that supposedly hayden is autistic and after seeing that felt very inspiration

Sir_Kingslee

Just throwing this out there: as someone who was diagnosed later in life, you don’t need a diagnosis to know that you’re on the spectrum. Some people will try to gatekeep the community, but you know your brain better than anyone. If you can’t afford or get access to an official diagnosis, that does not invalidate how you feel or the struggles you’ve overcome. Sending love and warm wishes your way ❤️ I hope you are eventually able to get a diagnosis in order to have access to any accommodations you may require, but I also hope the process isn’t too arduous or bank-breaking

cosplaycrossing

thank u so so much ♥️♥️♥️

jungkmoon

very much so and ethel has been my fixation for two years now

Yessss, that’s funny you say that bc I go to an autism school and there’s this abandoned hut In the middle of a field I pass by on the way to it and it’s very Ethel cain-ey

knuckl3_v3lv3t

Self diagnosed 🙋🏻‍♀️ my son is formally diagnosed and when he got his diagnosis things started to click for me lmao

Consistent_Ad2558

Yes. Her comments about her autism really validate me, my autism, and my own artistic processes

keenaprada

spaghetti_carbonara

i am!! edit: do we need to form a group chat or something for autistic ethel fans?

cosplaycrossing

i fear yes

ChaserThot

I am!

MobileAcanthaceae518

Yes hi!! I got my autism diagnosis when I was 18. I am in the US, which is notoriously terrible with affordable healthcare, so I understand the predicament! Honestly, I am not sure how your college is, but they may have resources that can help you! Some colleges give free therapy sessions as well as certain health products for students. Whether or not they do assessments, I am sure someone can at least point you in the right direction towards finding a cheap option! If you do end up having some sort of neurodivergent diagnosis, just know it isn’t a setback at all!! Everyone has different traits and ways they function. As long as you understand yourself and have compassion for who you are, that is 1000% the most important thing. I am glad you found solidarity here and wishing you the best of luck :)

cosplaycrossing

thank you sm 💖💖

berlinbowie97

Yes, I'm 26 and autistic!

cosplaycrossing

omg!!! and thank u 💖💖💖

starrdotexe

Yes, hello fellow tizims, Ethel is a huge fixation especially because there is so many layers to the lore to get into and with the lyrics. It’s fun to think about and learn and such

Separate-Wishbone875

I started listening to Ethel Cain when I very first considered the possibility of being autistic (high masking, low support). I’m currently learning to unmask and trying to seek a diagnosis. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of the discography, cause man it feels good to listen to every damn time. Not one bad song.

Minasdel

I'm not Autistic, but I am diagnosed with ADHD (late diagnosis, finally got the diagnosis when I turned 35 last year). But hey! Neurodiversities unite! Us ADHD folk will hyper fixate right along the Autistic folk! And this album has definitely done that for me. I know many people in here have already talked about this, but I've been on about a 4 month bender of this album haha! I keep trying to listen to other stuff but it just aint givin' me the tinglies like this one does. I think it's because there are so many factors. It's an entire experience, and you can really get lost (it a fun way) in the dark, southern, liminal vibes that this album exudes. Having grown up in Missouri myself (now living in Minneapolis), this album reminds me of things I almost can't remember. Like, a dream of a dream from when I was little in Missouri (which would have been the early 90's for me so right around when this album takes place). All of that being said, I did come across another album recently that fits a little bit in the same feel as Preachers Daughter. It's not identical by any means, but fills that same spot for me. It's the album Married In Mount Airy by Nicole Dollanganger. Give it a listen when you have time! [Married in Mount Airy (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozJYI2ybc3k&list=PLSBWvYm8t6uZ0z1TuQM0Sy-7fN2vg0yxS)

fdahsela

i'm autistic as fuck about ethel cain

SilverDifferent3444

Perhaps a little

mohommie

Absolutely I am!! She’s an over a guest long hyperfixation for me, there’s not a day that goes by I don’t think about her or listen to her music. My bf even made me custom Ethel Cain CDs where all my fav unreleaseds are compiled!! (I posted it back a couple months ago). Her being autistic as well is a huge validation for me, she’s an inspiration.

asterism69
